Although the theme song of the TV show Mr. Ed tried to tell us all differently (“A horse is a horse, of course, of course…”), s0 a horse is not just any horse where Thoroughbreds are concerned. S0 I’m taking you way back to explore the “founding fathers” of the modern Thoroughbred racehorse.
Thoroughbred horses have minutely monitored family trees—called pedigrees—that allow their breeders, owners, and trainers to prove one very important fact: that every horse registered as a Thoroughbred must be able to trace its lineage far back to three influential horses, called “foundation sires.”
The Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian, and the Byerly Turk landed on English soil from the Middle East in the seventeenth century, imported by three savvy horsemen intent on improving the native English breed.
Likewise, in 1730, another horseman sent a Thoroughbred named Bulle Rock—bred from the Darley Arabian and a Byerly Turk mare—to the colony of Virginia for the purpose of creating a faster, stronger, American-bred equine family.
Over the next century over 300 more imported Thoroughbreds would reach America to found dynasties of their own, many establishing kingdoms in the Bluegrass region of what would soon be the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Over a century and a half after Bulle Rock reached American shores, fifteen horses went to post in the inaugural Kentucky Derby, held at the new Louisville Jockey Club course in Louisville, Kentucky on May 17, 1875. Each of the fifteen sported impressive pedigrees that included the names of the greatest sires in American history somewhere in their charts: thirteen could claim descent from Sir Archy (occasionally spelled “Archie”), twelve claimed Boston, nine claimed Lexington, and so on.
But all of them, through the many generations of sires and dams that came before, still carried the blood of those three stallions from the Middle East, by way of Britain.
Those bloodlines lived on in the twentieth century equine heroes and heroines of the Kentucky Derby. The 1926 first and second place finishers, Bubbling Over and Bagenbaggage, were bred by E. R. Bradley at his Idle Hour Stock Farm. One of Bradley’s most prolific and influential sires, Black Toney, would produce Derby winners Black Gold (1924) and Brokers Tip (1933).
Regret, the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1915, came from another important sire line in Derby history. Her sire, Broomstick, was the progeny of Ben Brush, winner of the 1896 Kentucky Derby. Ben Brush’s line runs back to other Thoroughbreds, like: Bramble, Bonnie Scotland, Leamington, Eclipse, and Lexington. And, of course, the Darley and Godolphin Arabians and the Byerly Turk.

A genetic analysis of more than 200 thoroughbreds and a computer check of a million race-horse pedigrees has confirmed the highly inbred status of the modern racing champion.
Professor Patrick Cunningham of Trinity College, Dublin, said a combination of modern molecular genetics and a trawl through 300 years of pedigree stud books has identified the key ancestors of the half-million thoroughbreds in the world today.
Scientists trace origin of ‘speed gene’ in modern racehorses to a British mare of 300 years ago. One stallion, a bay colt called the Darley Arabian, stands out.
The study found that his Y chromosome, which carries the male genes, is found in 95 per cent of modern thoroughbred stallions. The Darley Arabian was born in 1700 and brought to England from Syria in 1704 by the British consul of the day, Thomas Darley, who made the stallion into a champion stud.
A mare called Tregonwell’s Natural Barb contributed the largest proportion – 14 percent – of the genes passed down the female line of racehorses, Professor Cunningham told the British Association’s Festival of Science in Dublin. By analysing the pedigree status of all horses registered in the General Stud Book over the past three centuries, Professor Cunningham found that a small number of stallions began to emerge as the founders of the male line.
“In the early days there was some jockeying for position between the early stallions but after about 70 years, some dropped away and three survived,” he said. The three stallions found to contribute most of the genes to today’s stallions were the Darley Arabian, the Byerley Turk and the Godolphin Barb, “and eventually the Darley Arabian raced to supremacy,” Professor Cunningham told the conference.
The findings came out of a wider scientific investigation into the genetics of the thoroughbred racehorse, the origin of which began when about 80 horses from the Middle East and North Africa were imported into England for breeding. An analysis of the pedigree status and the DNA of about 211 race horses showed that most of the genes of this original group of 80 have been lost over time, Professor Cunningham said.
“The effective number of founders was about 28 – there were about 28 horses contributing pretty well to all the genes in today’s population, that’s despite the fact that there were about 80 horses recorded in the first stud book,” he said. “We’ve been able to measure the contribution of these founders to today’s population and the top 10 contribute about 80 per cent of the genes,” he said.
“We’ve measured the inbreeding over that time and there’s about a 15 per cent accumulation of inbreeding. For every two horses in our sample we were able to get a molecular measure of their relationship. It turned out that on average that was 47 per cent, so any two horses share 47 per cent of their genes,” he said.
Virtually all 500,000 of the world’s thoroughbred racehorses are descended from 28 ancestors, born in the 18th and 19th centuries 2. Up to 95% of male thoroughbreds can be traced back to just one stallion 2.
Researchers have claimed that all the best thoroughbreds of racing are very distantly related after tracing the ‘speed gene’ they all share to a single ancestor from the 17th century 3. These Arabian horses were imported into England between the late 17th and early 18th Century by gentlemen who wanted to breed better racehorses.
