Meet Zack Kelly: Boston Red Sox pitcher with mid-90s fastball went undrafted, was released twice, initially signed for $500 with the Athletics in June 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Newberry College. The A’s released him in April 2018. He then spent a couple of years in the Angels organization before being released again during the COVID shutdown.
“Being released twice and just pretty much getting told, ‘We don’t want you anymore, you’re not good enough,’ it fuels everything,” Kelly said. “It makes you work harder. You have to go the extra mile because you’re not going to get the same opportunities that a team will give to someone, they have a lot more money invested in.”
The right-handed reliever, who will turn 28 on March 3rd, always believed in himself and his persistence is paying off. He received a non-roster invitation to Red Sox 2022 major league spring training camp after an impressive season with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2021. He posted a 2.18 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and .194 batting average in 36 relief outings (45 ⅓ innings).
He has a legitimate chance to make his MLB debut this summer and help the 2022 Boston Red Sox bullpen.
“It’s hard to tell someone no that just doesn’t quit,” Kelly said. “As cliché as those sounds, it really is my mindset.”
Kelly struck out 36.7% of the batters he faced last year. He averaged 13.7 strikeouts per nine innings compared to 3.6 walks. Kelly also posted an impressive 58.5% groundball rate at Portland.
“I’m always confident in my ability,” Kelly said when asked about potentially making his big-league debut in 2022. “If that opportunity were to come, I think mindset-wise nothing would really change. It’s the same game.”
“My first year I probably paid to play to be honest with you,” Kelly said. “I definitely lost money. ” I still work mainly doing lessons. … Even up until 2019, I was doing virtual video analysis for kids during the season. So, I would get home from a game and have to do some of those. That’s just the way it is.
“It’s not easy. My first year my parents would literally have to put money into my account so I would have money straight out of college,” he added. “Whether it’s that or it’s coming to games, most times I’ll have either my parents there or my wife there every other week. So that’s really nice to have their support of being there in person.”
He said his parents and wife are always there to give him honest advice. “They’ve always been there every step of the way, good times and bad times,” Kelly said. “A lot of times they tell me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear. That also helps.”

“I took a lot of time during my rehab just to understand the kind of pitcher I am,” Kelly said. “And just kind of looked at a lot of different sequence stuff and then how to try to mix up pitches in different counts. Just try to go up and down and east to west. Try not to fall into any habits. Fortunately, it kind of worked.” Kelly took a deeper look at his mechanics.
He learned how to move more efficiently to take stress off his shoulder and elbow. He began using his lower half more and it led to more mobility and strength.
“I don’t necessarily think it (the injury) was a strength issue but I guess by doing that my velo did go up,” Kelly said. “Is that the surgery? Maybe. Is it moving more efficiently in my lower half? Who knows?”
Kelly’s four-seam fastball often was in the 94-96 mph range during 2021. He reached 97-98 mph in a couple of games.
“My changeup has always been my best pitch,” he said. “I’ve always been able to get weak contact with that and a lot of swings and misses.”
Kelly made adjustments to his pitch mix halfway through the 2021 season in Portland before his promotion to Worcester. “I scraped my slider,” he said.
Kelly traded in the slider for a combination cutter/slider.
“I call it a hybrid in between a cutter and a slider,” he said.
He always had a high ground ball rate. He gave up just two homers last season. He has allowed 11 homers in 196 ⅓ innings during his minor league career.
“My personal philosophy for my entire career is that if you can miss bats and keep the ball out of the air, good things are going to happen,” Kelly said. “So I always try to make my strikeout rate and my groundball rate higher than my fly ball rate. I think if you can generate weak contact and miss a lot of bats, they’re going to have to string together some hits to really get some runs across. If they string a couple hits, then more power to them.”

Oakland Athletics Unselected in the 2017 MLB draft, Kelly signed with the Oakland Athletics as an undrafted free agent for a $500 signing bonus.[3] He pitched in the rookie-level Arizona League during 2017.[4] The Athletics released Kelly in April 2018.[2] Kelly later said, “My first year I probably paid to play to be honest with you. I definitely lost money.”[3]
Los Angeles Angels Kelly signed with the Los Angeles Angels organization and played for three teams in the Angels’ system, reaching the Class A-Advanced level with the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League; in 18 total relief appearances during the season, he posted a 2.93 ERA and struck out 41 batters in 43 innings pitched.[4] Kelly began the 2019 season with the Mobile BayBears of the Double-ASouthern League,[5] and also played one game with Inland Empire, accruing an overall 3–7 record in 21 games (13 starts) with a 4.88 ERA.[4] The Angels released Kelly during the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020.[3] Shortly thereafter, Kelly underwent surgery on his elbow to have a ligament reattached.[6]
Boston Red Sox In 2021, Kelly joined the Red Sox organization, playing for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs and the Triple-AWorcester Red Sox.[3] He had a 1.69 ERA in 21 relief appearances for Portland before he was promoted to Worcester, where he had a 2.89 ERA in 15 relief appearances. In 2022, the Red Sox invited Kelly to spring training as a non-roster player and he returned to Worcester for the beginning of the season.[7] He accrued a 2.72 ERA for Worcester through August 29,[8] when he was added to Boston’s major-league roster.[9] Kelly made his MLB debut that evening, against the Minnesota Twins.[10] He was on the paternity list for three days in early September.[11] In 13 relief appearances with Boston, Kelly pitched to a 1–0 record with 3.95 ERA while striking out 11 batters in 13+2⁄3 innings.[12] Kelly was the 2022 recipient of the Lou Gorman Award issued by the Red Sox organization.[13]
Personal life Kelly is married and resides in South Carolina in the offseason.[6] He and his wife, Brittany, had their first child in September 2022.[14]

Mechanics: Throws from a three-quarters arm slot. Start on the first base side of the rubber. Medium leg kick. Stiff delivery. Arm hook behind. Rocks back at his peak and then drops and drives as he comes forward. Inconsistent timing with delivery leads him to pull off with his front side. Average athlete, good arm speed.
Fastball: 93-96 mph. Tops out at 98 mph. Heavy, generates a lot of weak contact on the ground. Throws strikes, but command is below-average. Command and velocity have improved as the 2022 season has gone on. Plus pitch.
Changeup: 80-82 mph. Great separation from fastball. Pitch shows late, parachuting movement down. Throws with very deceptive arm speed. Has shown bat-missing ability at the minor league level. Plus pitch.
Cutter: 87-89 mph. Hard, horizontal break. Primarily used to generate soft contact against right-handed hitters. Potential fringe-average offering.
Slider: 83-84 mph. Has not incorporated much in outings scouted since 2021.

Summation: Projects as a middle reliever. Ceiling of a consistent seventh-inning arm. Likely lacks late-inning upside due to inconsistent command, but could stick around for a while as a sixth-inning arm. Fastball and changeup both projects as plus pitches, with changeup showing true bat-missing ability. Cutter is more of a pitch-to-contact offering at present, but if it improves, would give him a third pitch that can miss bats. Late bloomer who could continue to improve and see his stuff take a step forward again.

Kelly, who had come on to relieve starter Chris Sale in the fifth inning, threw a pitch that hit Yandy Diaz. The 28-year-old Kelly immediately knelt in front of the mound, with something clearly wrong. After being checked out by trainers, he left the game with tears in his eyes.
The team has not released any updates on the injury, but pitchers know their arms, and Kelly sensed right away it’s not good. Wednesday night’s appearance aside, in which Kelly yielded two earned runs in less than an inning, he’s pitched well this season. In five games before Wednesday, he had a 1.35 ERA.
Beyond his pitching, Kelly has been an inspirational story. The former Newberry (S.C.) College star signed with the Red Sox for a $500 bonus as an undrafted free agent in 2017. After several years toiling in the minors, and fighting an injury a couple of years ago, he finally made his MLB debut last season, with a 3.95 ERA and 1.319 WHIP in 13 games. He appeared set to assume a larger role this year.

Is the Syrian Situation a Fulfillment of Biblical End Times Prophecy?
The turmoil in the Middle East may be an indicator of something bigger. Whenever tensions begin to skyrocket in the Middle East, the rest of the world gets worried. It’s no surprise, since the area has been known for its turmoil for most of human history. Many, though, also recognize that it is the center of the majority of Biblical prophecies. The Syrian conflict and the U.S. decision to strike a base inside the country are leading to further concerns. The future of the nation’s civil war, the state of the humanitarian crisis, and the best political path to move forward are all under hot debate. People are confused on how to best diffuse the situation. In addition to the conversations on how to remedy the crisis, there has also been intense debate within the theological space. Christians are starting to discuss the possibility of the events in Syria being connected with prophecies in the Bible.
A Biblical prophecy is a prediction of an event that has yet to unfold. There are many who whole-heartedly believe the Syrian conflict is written explicitly in Biblical prophecy. For example, Joel Rosenberg, a New York Times’ bestselling author, has pointed to Old Testament scriptures to support his case. Questions began to make their way around evangelical circles following the event of Russia’s air strikes targeting rebels in Syria in October 2015. The discussion surrounding Syria’s ongoing civil war, which started in 2011, and if it was tied to biblical prophecy reemerged. Rosenberg laid out his thoughts by publishing on his blog in the wake of the air strikes. He claimed that Russian president Vladimir Putin is “working hand-in- glove with Iran’s government” in formulating operations in Syria. This came the same week that reports of Iran waging a ground attack, while Russia was carrying out assaults from the air, were circulated.
“The Hebrew prophet Ezekiel wrote 2,500 years ago that in the ‘last days’ of history, Russia and Iran will form a military alliance to attack Israel from the north,” Rosenberg wrote. “Bible scholars refer to this eschatological conflict, described in Ezekiel 38–39, as the ‘War of Gog & Magog.’” He added, “Are these sudden and dramatic moves by Moscow and Tehran…simply coincidental, or [do they] have prophetic implications?” The question Rosenberg poses is at the epicenter of the debate surround Iran, Syria and Russia and their potential involvement in the end times. This has gained a great deal of attention in both the Christian community and the general media over the years.
For those who believe Syria will play a role in end times scenarios, Isaiah 17:1–3 is the cornerstone. “’See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,’ declares the LORD Almighty.” The first portion that focuses on a “ruinous heap” has many wondering if the present crisis in Syria was prophesied in the Bible. However not everyone is buying it. Some scholars have countered that Damascus was already destroyed and that this verse refers to an attack by the Assyrians that unfolded in 732 BC.
Rosenberg combats his critics and shuts down the idea of the Assyrian attack being the event prophesied in the Bible. Specifically citing Isaiah 17:1–3 and Jeremiah 49:23–27, Rosenberg explained in a separate blog piece that Damascus’s destruction has not yet happened. Jeremiah 49:23–27 pledges judgment upon Damascus, proclaiming that it has “become helpless” and that a fire will be kindled in its walls. “We’re watching Damascus unravel…These prophecies have not yet been fulfilled. Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. It has been attacked, besieged, and conquered,” Rosenberg wrote. “But Damascus has never been completely destroyed and left uninhabited.”
“Bible Answer Man” Hank Hanegraaff doesn’t believe in the claim that the Old Testament could be describing future or current events. Hanegraaff has also spoken about supposed Biblical prophecies associated with the end times before. Back in 2013 on his radio show a caller asked him about claims that the Book of Isaiah details impending destruction for Damascus. Hanegraaff pushed back the notion. “So, what you’re saying is they’re tying in the passages in Isaiah to what is currently happening in Syria…and this is just a classic example of newspaper eschatology and shame on the pastors that are doing this, because it either is a case of them not knowing the Word of God, which seems unlikely to me, or simply wanting to invite sensationalism and sophistry,” he responded. “If you look at what the Bible actually says, it is very clear that the fulfillment comes in the biblical text as well.”
“This whole notion is fulfilled in biblical history when the king of Assyria captured and destroyed Damascus…if you look at Isaiah chapter 7, there’s a permutation of this as well…you see the fulfillment in the very next chapter, Isaiah chapter 8,” he continued. Hanegraaff went on to say that some pastors’ decisions to transport pieces of prophecy to the 21st century are irresponsible. He called the action “embarrassing” and said that those pastors and Bible experts who embrace the idea are “dragging Christ’s name through the mud.”
Rather than reading the Scriptures for what they are, he believes some theologians are “reading into the Scriptures their own eschatological views.” In the end, the debate is compelling, intriguing and fascinating from both sides. The debate is composed of individuals who agree on a central Christian doctrine, however, couldn’t disagree more about the signs and symbols that are presented within it. We cannot be sure when the end times are coming or how they will unfold, but it’s worth discussing in the Christian space.
Does war with Syria have anything to do with the end times? As civil war rages in Syria and other nations ponder potential involvement, some Bible teachers believe we can see biblical end-times prophecy unfolding right before our eyes. The Middle East is a religious-political powder keg and has been for years, but the Syrian Crisis seems to be making the situation that much more explosive. Because of Syria’s proximity to Israel, Egypt’s troubles, Iran’s threats, and the United States’ ultimatums, there is talk of the end times, Armageddon, and World War III.
It is true that, with every passing day, we draw closer to the Second Coming of Christ (James 5:8). And the prophecy of Isaiah 17:1 has yet to be fulfilled: “A prophecy against Damascus: ‘See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.’” Damascus, the capital of Syria, has a longstanding reputation for being the oldest continuously occupied city in the world. It has never been without citizens or totally destroyed. But Isaiah’s prophecy still stands; there is coming a day when Damascus will be nothing but a “heap of ruins.” The current war in Syria could indeed be one of the events leading up to the capital’s destruction.
There are other verses in the Bible tethered to Isaiah 17:1, but the idea of a ruinous heap suggests that not one building is left standing in Damascus. The city will no longer be a city. Some students of prophecy believe a nuclear bomb could be the means of fulfilling this prophecy; others suggest the possibility of an earthquake. Regardless of exactly how or when it happens, two things we know for sure: God is sovereign and His Word will stand (Isaiah 40:8).
There is much unrest in the Middle East, and the war in Syria is capturing the attention of the whole world. However, this particular conflict, even if it expands to other nations, cannot be associated with Armageddon. That battle occurs near the end of the Tribulation, during the bowl judgments, as the nations of the earth gather to fight against the Lord (Revelation 16:12–16). The war in Syria, if it is indeed part of end-times prophecy, is more likely part of the “birth pains” described in Mark 13:7–8.
In 700 BC, Isaiah wrote of the demise of Damascus. Today, 2,700 years later, many believe that we are close to seeing that long-standing prophecy fulfilled. However chaotic the events on the world stage appear, we know that all things are working toward the fulfillment of God’s Word.
“The Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)—are you ready for His coming?
March 11, 2023 · 4 min read. Iain Ward is a 33-year-old who was told in 2020 that he had stage 3 brain cancer. He was told he had five years to live and decided to spend his time raising money for charities. This is Ward’s story, as told to Lauren Crosby Medlicott. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Iain Ward. It has been edited for length and clarity. If it hadn’t been for a medical trial, I signed up for in 2019, I wouldn’t have known I had a brain tumor. The prescreening for the trial required an MRI of the head. Two weeks later, I had a phone call telling me I had a benign tumor. My first question was whether I could still participate in the trial. I was told no — that this was a serious medical condition and I couldn’t complete the trial. I had been completely asymptomatic before the discovery, so it all surprised me. A doctor informed me it was likely cancerous, as it had grown quickly since they found it. Even though I was scared at first, the doctor could tell I didn’t want sympathy but practical steps forward. I knew having a plan would take my mind off the problem. I decided to have a craniotomy.
I had stage 3 cancer The doctors told me I would have speech problems for six to 12 months after the surgery, but six days later, my speech was normal again. I recovered so quickly because of my young age — the brain is able to adapt to damage far easier when you’re younger. After my surgery, I was told I had stage 3 brain cancer. Estimating how long I had to live was difficult, but they guessed anywhere between five and six years. It wasn’t a huge surprise to me at this point but did make me reflect on what I would do for the time I had left. Before I found out about the brain tumor, I was working as a fitness instructor, but work seemed to dry up quickly after I found out about the few years I had left to live. So I started throwing myself into my TikTok channel, amassing over 4 million followers.
I wanted to do something meaningful. Until I learned about my cancer, I hadn’t felt I had done anything massively meaningful. With only a few years left, I wanted to change that, and raising money for charity became my obsession, a challenge for me to focus on. The whole point of my channel is to raise money for cancer charities around the world and rally people to fight cancer, but I like to make it fun — to put glitter on the turd that is cancer. It quickly became fuller than a full-time job.
I was still exercising, attempting to beat the world record for running a marathon, but had one experience about six months after surgery that surprised me. I had gone for a run and started to feel foggy, so I decided to slow down and push through, thinking it was just an issue I would need to learn to deal with. Next thing I knew, I was being woken up by a paramedic. I’d had a seizure. After that, I knew I had to take breaks when I started to feel a sense of confusion while exercising. People said having cancer would make me more attractive to women. But I knew that was nonsense. Dying soon isn’t an attractive quality, but being successful at something often is. So while I went through a dry spell, my romantic life has somewhat gone back to normal. I doubt I’ll end up married or even have a girlfriend. I think that’s a very hard sell. I’m an optimist, but I’m also a realist.
On St. Patrick’s Day, I’m begin taking on another challenge — cycling across the US in 66 days. I’ll start in New York City and head west to Los Angeles along Route 66. I’m trying to set a world record while raising funds for November, when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues, because I love a challenge. I’ve now got three years left to live, according to the estimate I was given. It isn’t long, but I try not to think about it because it doesn’t serve a positive purpose for me. I’m just trying to raise as much money as I can with the time I have left.
When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020, Iain Ward was sure about one thing – he wasn’t interested in any “pity party.” Doctors had discovered a cancerous tumor growing in his brain after the Irishman had taken part in a voluntary medical trial and, after tests, he was told he had around five years left to live. But speak to the 33-year-old now and you’ll hear a man with an enviable perspective on life; someone who has accepted his hand but who is determined to use it for good. Since his diagnosis, Ward has dedicated his life to raising as much money as he possibly can and is currently cycling across the US with a friend, Adee Phelan, for mental health and cancer charities. As well as the mammoth cycle ride – which Ward describes as a “gigantic commute” – he wants to break the world record for most money raised by a single person running a marathon and the fastest marathon dressed as a video-game character.
“I could get very upset about the bad poker hand that I’ve been dealt, but at the same time, it’s almost arrogant of me to not look at the other amazing poker hand that I’ve been dealt simultaneously,” he tells CNN Sport, adding that his cancer has given him clarity on life. The pair, with a small support crew, set off from New York City last month and have estimated it will take them around two months to cover the 3,400 miles to Los Angeles, CA. Ward has been documenting moments of his journey on his social media channels, which have exploded in popularity in recent months.
‘The King Of Chemo’ has almost five million followers on TikTok, where he posts motivational, and humorous, videos tracking his journey. However, despite raising money for charity, Ward is not primarily looking for donations. Instead, he wants you to follow him on social media. That way, he can get corporations to pay him for advertising their products, which he then donates to charity. “The priority is to just get a social media channel that is so huge that it’s undeniable, it cannot be ignored,” he says. “I like to think it’s eventually going to become easy enough, almost like a robotic pitch, where you can just show the numbers and show the results and then I have a lot of money donated to cancer research.”
Despite his diagnosis, Ward says he appreciates the “freakish luck” that has followed him throughout his life. That may seem like a jarring statement for a man with terminal cancer to say but Ward’s philosophy to life doesn’t allow him to dwell on the negatives. He’s thankful that doctors were able to diagnose his illness before he experienced any symptoms – after all, it’s what has allowed him to take on these challenges. He says he’s also grateful to be part of the “elite club” to undergo and survive a craniotomy – a surgical procedure which removes a part of the bone from the skull to expose the brain. There was also good fortune involved in how he ended up cycling across the US.
He had previously been looking to raise money for an epic run across the country when Phelan reached out to him via Instagram. Phelan suffers with depression and was planning to cycle across the US to raise money for mental health and suggested Ward join him for a week. In their first meeting together, it became clear that the pair were going to tackle the whole challenge together instead – despite Ward admitting that he’s not a huge fan of cycling. A fitness fanatic, who particularly enjoys weightlifting, Ward says he didn’t do much training for the feat but says he was aware of the main challenges that might present themselves. “I hope this doesn’t sound arrogant, but I’m experienced enough to know that the hardest thing that we are going to do has nothing to do with your physical fitness ability,” he says, speaking about the trip. “It’s going to be your tolerance of having a really sore bum, which you can’t train for. “We probably aren’t going to be sweating a huge amount except for when we’re going through the desert, when it gets closer to the summer. “If we’re going to be doing like five hours a day, we’re not going to be going hard. It’s going to be like a gigantic commute. It’s not going to be a race.”

Dark moments A small documentary crew is following the pair throughout their trip and Ward, a natural in front of camera, is enjoying the process of filming. The goal is to sell the documentary, hopefully as a series to Netflix, which can then be used to raise even more money for charity. Stops at the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas are still to come and Ward seems to be loving every minute, that much is clear from his videos on social media. But while he permeates an unrelenting optimism online, he admits there have been moments since his diagnosis when things have gotten too much – albeit fleeting. He remembers the “negative emotions flushing over me” when the doctor told him the seriousness of his illness and occasionally gets a “slap in the face” when he finds himself reading about the life expectancy for people in his position. But dwelling on such things is not an option for Ward, who is as adept at mastering his mind as much as his body. “I do put my head in the sand about the whole situation,” he admits.
“But I think I do that for a logical reason. “I can’t just stare at a research paper and then change survival rates. So, if I can’t change it, I don’t believe I should focus on it. Whereas there are things that I can control, and I can change, and I choose to focus on those.”
“I think actually that’s a fairly suitable metaphor.” Ward has big plans once his cycle across the US is over. There is the small matter of breaking world records in marathon running and he also wants to, one day, circumnavigate the entire globe by manpower (cycling, running, walking) only. These are lofty plans by anyone’s standards, but Ward says he has the determination and enthusiasm to make them a reality. Ward has clearly plenty of life left to live.

But for all of us, it’s part of being human. Loneliness can lead to excessive drinking or binge eating, to suppress those unpleasant feelings. It can lead to depression and rumination, as you dwell on the question, “Why am I alone?” It can also lead to hopelessness. But having a strategy to deal with loneliness can be an important safeguard against depression, substance abuse, or even making bad choices for partners.
Let’s take a look at seven ways you can cope with feelings of loneliness:
1. Normalize loneliness. As John Cacioppo, a researcher in the field of loneliness, points out, loneliness is on the rise—from 11 percent to 20 percent in the 1970s and 1980s to 40 percent to 45 percent in 2010. So you’re not alone in feeling lonely. As widespread and increasingly frequent loneliness is, we must recognize that we need to have strategies for coping with it.
Perhaps the recent breakdown of connectedness can be related to the decline of family connections, higher divorce rates, people moving more frequently, the decline in church attendance, or declining participation in organizations like the PTA and labor unions. As Harvard social historian Robert Putnam illustrated in his book, Bowling Alone, people in the 1950s would participate in things like bowling leagues, but now they bowl alone.
2. Relate loneliness to your values of connection. It may sound invalidating, but we can also ask, “What is loneliness good for?” I would suggest that loneliness reminds us of the value of connection, intimacy, or simply sharing experiences with others. We evolved to live in smaller communities with daily face-to-face contact and shared child-rearing. That has changed for most people, but loneliness may remind you of the fact that you value connecting with other people, and that this value is an important part of being human. Don’t give up on connection when you are feeling lonely.
3. Have a plan. The first part of developing a plan is to identify your “trouble times” for loneliness. It might be evenings, weekends, or holidays. Have a plan in advance for these times. On weekends, you might make plans with friends or family; you might go to museums, concerts, bike rides, guided walks, church or synagogue events, or connect with people on Meetup.com or other sites. I like thinking of turning yourself into a tourist for a day or a night. Or if your worrisome time is at night, have a plan for a couple of nights each week when you might connect with someone; it could simply be on Skype. Plan some videos to watch, music to listen to, attend a yoga class, join a health club, take up a hobby. A friend of mine, who is incredibly resilient, took up the guitar and swimming—separately—at the age of 68. He experiences great enthusiasm with these activities. What’s your plan?
4. You don’t need someone else to do something rewarding. So often people will say, “I have no one to do things with.” You don’t need someone else to go to the movies, go for a walk, work out, go to a concert, or take up a new hobby. Some people say, “I feel self-conscious doing these things by myself.” Try to identify what those self-conscious thoughts are—they may be things like, “People will see me alone and think that I’m pathetic.” But how do you know what others think? And even if they did think that, why should you care? Maybe doing things alone means you are independent, empowered, and free. In fact, doing something by yourself might actually be a good way to meet new people. Imagine that you are at a museum or bookstore, and you start talking to someone next to you about a painting or a book. Or imagine that you are taking a cooking or yoga class and start talking to people. Empower yourself by getting out and realizing that you don’t need someone else to do things with. You have yourself.
5. Identify your loneliness thoughts. Write down some of the thoughts that you have when you are lonely. These might include thoughts like those above, or the following: I will always be alone. If I am alone, I have to feel lonely and unhappy. I must be a loser because I am alone. I can’t stand feeling lonely. If you have these or other negative thoughts, then you are like millions of other people who feel stopped in their tracks by loneliness. But you can try some of these rational and helpful responses: You are only alone for these moments (minutes, hours), and you will be interacting with other people soon—at work, waiting in line, talking to a friend, or participating in an activity. You are not on a deserted island. Just because you are alone doesn’t mean that you have to feel sad and lonely. You can look at it as an opportunity to do some things that you like. You might enjoy having the peace to read something you like, listen to your own music, cook your favorite food, watch your favorite movie, or visit a museum at your own pace. The idea that you are a “loser” because you are alone making no sense: Everyone is alone at some time. And as recent research shows, about 45 percent of people experience loneliness. Being alone is a situation—and situations change. The idea that you cannot stand being alone also doesn’t make sense. It may be true that you don’t like being alone, but it’s the way you relate to it that matters. If you relate to loneliness with protest, anger, desperation, or defeat, then it will be unpleasant. Or go to your local animal shelter and offer to volunteer. One woman I know volunteered for several months at a shelter, “socializing the kittens.” Talk about great work to have.
Another way of connecting is to do volunteer work, because we all need to be needed. You can search online in your community for volunteer organizations that correspond to your interests. Perhaps it’s working with kids, older people, cancer patients, or the poor. I doubt you will feel lonely when you are showing kindness toward someone.
And make plans to see people. (This includes using social media.) Just because you haven’t been in contact much lately doesn’t mean you can’t take the initiative. Or join organizations where people share your interests—political, cultural, religious, or social. Being alone doesn’t mean you have to feel lonely. And feeling lonely doesn’t mean that you have to feel that way indefinitely. Soul diseases attack our belief systems. Corrupted beliefs can be very serious if left untreated. They grow and spread, wreaking destruction in us. And when contagious, as they frequently are, they harm others. Such diseases can result in soul-death. Mercifully, there is a malaise of the soul. I’ll bet you know what I mean. Because hope is to the soul what energy is to the body, soul-malaise manifests itself as a flagging hope in God. It’s a vague, doubtee, spiritual discouragement. You wouldn’t describe it as a crisis of faith. You might also avoid talking about it because it’s hard to describe. You just feel spiritually sluggish.

It’s not wise to ignore malaise. Left unchecked you will get sicker. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching (1 Timothy 4:16)

Consistency is Key By Allie Stockton
I believe in consistency. When my day is going bad the answer is consistency. When I’m sad I turn to consistency. When I’m happy I can always use a little more consistency. When I’m tired, the answer is consistency. Consistency plays one of the most important roles in my life, without it. I would be lost.
Every time I go to a restaurant I get the same thing. If I go to a tropical smoothie. I have the same consistent thing. At Chick-Fil-A I always order a six-count nugget meal with Polynesian sauce. At Buffalo Wild Wings consistency means six boneless honey bbq wings with fried pickles. I don’t switch it up unless I am feeling extraordinarily adventurous because I need consistency.
I believe that consistency matters in friendships. My best friend has been my best friend for eight years. Consistency in friendships is important because it builds reliability and if ever there is a disagreement, there are habits to fall back on. My best friend and I focus on keeping things the same a lot. We spend time in the gym together. She comes over at least three times a week for dinner. We have even done the same handshake before every single basketball game since 7th grade because we believe consistency is key. Basketball has helped me to develop many consistent habits. Always having a practice to go to or a next season or another team has kept me consistent.
Consistency is not just important in friendships, but in all relationships. Consistency with my parents is important. Everything I do with my mom runs off of consistency. When we go to Starbucks, we get the same drink because we found one that works so why change it? We vacation at the same place each year so we know what to expect. When we are out of town for AAU tournaments, we always order the same dinner. My relationship with my dad is just as consistent. You can find us at Culvers every Friday at noon because we need that type of consistency. We talk about school and basketball, but mostly basketball. My parents are at every basketball game of mine because they believe in consistently supporting me.
I believe and I know that I have to have consistency. Without consistency I fall apart. Being consistent helps me to build routines that keep me on a path to success. My commitment to the gym and to strength training has helped me find success on the court. My commitment to rigorous classes and Sidney High School has helped me find success in the classroom. Some people might argue that keeping things so consistent would make me less able to overcome obstacles and setbacks. I disagree.
I have experienced setbacks and overcome obstacles because I believe in consistently returning to what I know will work. Barely anything in my life that I can control changes. Those things that do change will be met with routine and consistency because I believe consistency is key. Whether you find me in a gym, on court, at Starbucks, or in line at Chick-Fil-A … you know what you can expect – consistency with a smile!!! 🙂

Hello this is a polemic to give people logical reasons for life to have meaning. It is also a clear presentation of true Christianity with evidence and the true Lordship salvation message. It is good for sharing with unbelievers and also to equip Christians to answer objections: All of humanity are born into this world separated from a Just and Holy God. Out of His love God entered into time and space and became a human being, (Jesus) and died for our sins and rose from the dead. God did this out of His love for us in order that mankind might be able to have a relationship with his Creator.
We need only ask Him to work in our life and give us the faith to trust Him as our Lord and Savior. We know that something cannot come out of nothing, which means that something always was, (eternal). The universe exists therefore there are only two explanations for the creation of the universe: Either the universe is eternal or there is a Creator of the universe that is eternal. The scientific evidence shows us that the universe is winding down and it is not eternal.
Also the universe contains vast amounts of design and information proving intelligence. The entire ecosystem of the world to sustain life, the earth being just the right distance from the Sun, having the right size Moon for tides, having oxygen and water, an atmosphere bubble to protect us, teeming with the miraculous complexities of life, and the vast amount of complex information programmed in all living creature’s DNA.
All this proves that there is an Intelligent Eternal Creator. A Creator would communicate with His creatures otherwise we are left with just our opinions not knowing what is true or false, right or wrong. The Bible claims to be God’s communication to us. It is miraculously proved to be God’s Word by 25,000 archaeological finds and 2000 prophecies that have come true.

Some of these prophecies are: that the Son of God would be born of a virgin, (Isaiah 7:14); One from eternity would be born in Bethlehem, (Micah 5:2); that the Son will be called Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace, (Isaiah 9:6) and will be Emmanuel which means God with us, (Isaiah 7:14; Matt 1:23); that they would look upon the One they pierced, (Zacharia 12-10); that He would be pierced in his hands and soldiers would gamble for his clothing with lots, (Psalms 22:16-18; Matthew 27:35-37); that He would die for the sins of his people like a lamb to the slaughter and that He would raise from the dead, (Isaiah 53).
Jesus was prophesied to be God in the flesh; Jesus claimed to be God in the flesh, Jesus did miracles that only God could do. Jesus calmed a storm instantly with a word, healed people instantly, walked on water, raised the dead and raised Himself from the dead. His disciples and eyewitnesses claimed Jesus was God and went to their death claiming that He was raised from the dead and they had seen Him. Jesus said if you believe in me you will have eternal life.
In other words if you trust your life to Jesus as your Lord, God will make you a new creation. Your sins will be forgiven and you will be changed from the inside out and be able to have fellowship with your Creator and a life that counts. Jesus said deny yourself and follow Me, who loses his life will gain it and what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul. This means total denial of self rule realizing that the Creator of the universe knows far better than you are how your life should be run.
Turn your heart completely to Him and follow His word. God has to do this work for you and give you the faith and ability to truly submit to Him. Jesus said, “count the cost”, it is all or nothing with God. If you are not a Christian ask God to show you the truth and give you the power to trust your life to Him. Even if you think you are a Christian make sure and ask Jesus to confirm to you, your eternal destination of heaven or hell is at stake. There is a revolving door between all the institutions involved – ex-politicians accept board positions in investment banks and private equity, ex bankers move into the political sphere – the cap may change but the general economic consensus is maintained despite the repetitive financial crises since 1998 based on flawed economic models – flawed in terms of the interests of the general population.
The elite looks after its fellow members in times of trouble – major banks, investment banks, hedge funds and large corporations are repetitively bailed out when the results of their reckless greed and inability to learn from past mistakes results in yet another series of potential insolvent situations.
They are deemed “too big to fail” – a sound bite for the public. After each economic crisis governments implement austerity to reduce spending to balance the books – which bites hard on the general population. In a parallel world central banks print increasing amounts of “money” – they declare their (outdated) models suggest that this will kick start economic growth. They pass this “money” to the primary banks in the hope that this will be filtered down via the investment banks, hedge funds and other financial institutions into the real economy.
It never does filter down – it rotates round the financial institutions creating value bubbles in the stock market, real estate and bond markets and further increasing the wealth of the elites operating in their own fantasy bubble. Eventually the bubble bursts and the cycle start again but with the unresolved problems multiplying in seriousness each time. Nobody is called to account for the resulting devastation.
However. the current crisis may prove to be one crisis too far. The US dollar has been the world reserve currency since after the Second World War. There is a serious risk that this will not continue for much longer – the world monetary system has been tottering from day to day since September 2019 – US money printing was already “unprecedented” from September 2019 and the Coronavirus has added another unsustainable burden on the level of US debt. The potential therefore in the short to medium term is for a complete failure of the world monetary system – which is US centric. This is likely to result in a completely new monetary system with greater power wielded by the likes of China.
Will this therefore result in a complete shake up of the constituents of the global elite? Will this shake up result in an elite more favorable to the common man?

It takes up to 2 days to recharge one so it makes travel uncomfortable. This means you can’t visit your aunt 160 miles away because you can’t rely on power and thus strains the NORMAL bonds of family. Watch for them to interfere with communication next. The process relies on kinetic energy that can be converted into stored energy, and once you’ve come to a full stop, there’s no more kinetic energy. A Primer on Hybrid Battery Care This article may contain affiliate links. When the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles began arriving in 1999 and 2000, early adopters did their research and were quite knowledgeable about the then-new and revolutionary transportation mode. But the mass market was confused; these new cars had an additional battery to provide electricity to an electric motor. For the uninformed, the question was: Does the battery need to be plugged into a hybrid car charger?
When hybrids appeared most used nickel-metal-hydride batteries This question was such a big roadblock for increasing sales that Toyota began an advertising campaign for the Prius that clearly emphasized that plugging in was not necessary. Just occasionally fill up the gas tank and drive away. Fast-forward about 10 years and a new type of hybrid came on the scene—the plug-in hybrid, and it does require plugging in to charge the onboard battery to maximize efficiency (without plugging in it functions like a normal hybrid).
So, what’s the difference between the two different types of hybrid vehicles? Here’s a brief overview.
Regular Hybrids Regular hybrids recharge their onboard nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion battery packs by reclaiming energy through a process called regenerative braking. During coasting or braking, the electric motor that drives the wheels is electrically operated in reverse and acts as a generator. It takes with kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat through traditional mechanical friction brakes and stores it as electric energy in the battery. In addition, when in the generator mode, the internal combustion (usually gas) engine charges the battery pack.
Plug-in Hybrids
As bigger batteries were needed for plug-in hybrids, lithium-ion has become the battery of choice. This feature allows the vehicle to perform like a pure electric car and less like a conventional gasoline car, all the while delivering exceptional mileage.
As for plugging in to charge the battery, there are four options: Standard 120-volt household outlet with a charging time of three to eight hours, depending on vehicle. A 220-volt home charging system cuts charging time by half or more. Public charging stations times are equal to or less than 220-volt home charging systems. Fast-charging with a DC charger (with compatible vehicles) can cut the charge time to a half hour or less.
To plug or not to plug–that is the choice.
Plug-in hybrids provide most of the benefits of an electric car, while maintaining the efficiency and driving range of a regular hybrid, which eliminates “Range anxiety” of pure electric vehicles. Plug-in hybrid drivers can travel in an all-electric mode for the vast majority of typical local driving. When the battery’s electric charge is depleted, the conventional hybrid system powers the car until the next opportunity to plug in and recharge the batteries. There are choices now in the hybrid world and the buying public is learning to live with both types.

The low and zero-emission vehicle market has grown exponentially in recent years. If you’re shopping for one, you’re probably wondering what the difference is between a hybrid vehicle and an all-electric vehicle (EV), and which you should choose. We’ll examine both here.
How Does a Hybrid Vehicle Work? With inconsistent marketing around low and zero-emissions vehicles, it can be hard to pin down exactly what each model does or how they work. Some use a mix of gasoline and electric power, while others are entirely battery-powered. Hybrid vehicles get their name from the fact that they use both electric and internal combustion engines. The models most of us are familiar with, like the Prius, use an electric motor powered by a battery to move the vehicle during low-demand conditions like surface street driving. But they also have a smaller than normal gasoline engine to use for high-demand and long-distance situations.
Another name for this kind of hybrid vehicle is the “series hybrid.” Splitting power demand between electric and gas lets hybrids operate very efficiently, often getting a very high mile-per-gallon (MPG) range. Because it doesn’t use gas all the time, hybrids produce reduced carbon emissions but do still put out some exhaust.
In addition to the battery that all gas engines have, hybrids have another battery pack to power the electric motor. It’s not as big as the one in an EV, because the car doesn’t run solely on the battery’s power. A hybrid’s battery pack can store anywhere from 1 to 9 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity to use. A hybrid’s two batteries split the car’s electric needs — the battery pack powers the electric motor, while the more typical 12V car battery powers ancillary features like the radio and lights. Series hybrids typically recharge their battery through regenerative braking instead of plugging the battery pack in.
While series hybrids are probably the most common, there are other types of hybrid vehicles that work differently. Depending on the model and manufacturer, some hybrids use both electric and gas power at the same time instead of switching between the two. These are referred to as “parallel hybrids.” Still other hybrids allow you to plug them in to recharge their battery packs, giving them greater range than series hybrids. These hybrids still use some gas but have larger battery packs that allow them to travel greater distances solely using electric power.
How Are All-Electric Vehicles (EVs) Different from Hybrids? As the name implies, EVs do not use gasoline to power them at all. Instead, they store electricity in massive battery packs, which are used to rotate the vehicle’s electric motor. This design means far fewer moving parts than a conventional gas-powered engine. It also means a higher degree of rotational force, or torque can be sent to the wheels when accelerating than with an internal combustion engine.
Electric cars produce no exhaust and can refuel by being plugged in at home or using public charging stations. While just about every EV on the market uses regenerative braking, they still have to be plugged into a power source to fully charge their batteries. While early EVs were sedan-sized, there are now EV versions of everything from cars to trucks to SUVs available to purchase.
Advances in technology mean they have greater range and power than before, though it still might be easier to find a gas station than a place to charge your EV, depending on what the charging network in your area is like. Hybrids currently have the advantage over EVs when it comes to range, with the exception of higher-end models like Tesla’s Model 3 long range. That said, an EV will more than suffice for the average person’s daily drive, and can often be topped off at home overnight.
Should You Buy an Electric Car or a Hybrid? Which low or zero-emission vehicle is right for you? If range is important to you but you still want to cut your carbon footprint, a plug-in hybrid would be a good choice. If you’re not worried about range, have a place to plug it in at night, and are confident in relying on the charging network near you, an EV might be the way to go. At the end of the day, it depends on your needs.
