Kinderhook teen who battled rare bone cancer to announce Jets first round NFL Draft pick, By Melissa Steininger Albany/Capital Region PUBLISHED 12:04 PM ET Apr. 23, 2023
It’s back to baseball season, as the Ichabod Crane Middle School modified team is gearing up for its first games of the season. Coach Bob Hanna said the team is starting off strong.
What You Need To Know:
Kyle Stickles returned to the baseball field after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2020. He went through months in the hospital receiving chemotherapy after he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, had surgery to remove five inches of bone and had to relearn how to walk.
As a lifelong Jets fan, he says support from fans all over the country helped him through his toughest days. The teen will be announcing the first-round NFL Draft pick for the New York Jets through Make-A-Wish. Kyle Stickles is strapping on his glove for his big return.
The 13-year-old just got the medical clearance from his doctors to get back into the outfield. “We only had one game so far, but we won it 12-6,” Hanna said. “So, we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.
“The team has really rallied around him and made it a home for him,” Hanna said. “So, it’s really good to see him back out on the field.” It was baseball season 3 years ago when everything came to a stop. In 2020, the world shut down as it battled a pandemic. But, it was also a time when Stickles began his own battle.
Spectrum Local News shared details on Stickles’ condition back in 2021. At just 11 years of age, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. The journey began with a harmless trip to the doctor to help diagnose pain that Kyle, an avid baseball player, had been experiencing in his leg. It ended with a diagnosis that shook the Stickles family to their core. Kyle spent 97 days in the hospital at Albany Medical Center, went through months of chemotherapy, had surgery to remove five inches of bone and thankfully, was given the news that he was in remission. Then in 2021, he took his first steps toward recovery. “That’s all he really wants is to be a normal kid again,” said his mom, Jamie Stickles. Today, running the bases are some of the biggest strides of Kyle’s journey. “And I haven’t been playing baseball in a while, and I’ve really been wanting to play again,” Kyle said. “So, it feels great.”
Hanna said Kyle returned back to practice ready to put in the work for the season. “He’s been dealing with things that no other kid has to deal with,” Hanna said. “So he’s very resilient about it and doesn’t complain about anything.” But it’s his passion for sports that helped him through the toughest days. The reminders of that fight can be seen in every corner of his bedroom.
The New York Jets football team, Jets fans and sports fans across the country sent Kyle mementos of encouragement during his battle with cancer. His lifelong love for the Jets is going to be on full display on Thursday, as Kyle will be announcing the first-round pick for the team during the 2023 NFL Draft. It’s an opportunity he received through Make-A-Wish. “Anybody who knows him knows this is a perfectly Kyle wish,” Jamie said.
“Probably someone on offense,” Kyle said with a laugh when asked if he had any insight on who the Jets may be choosing. But, no matter who the Jets select this year, he has the support of his fellow fans and teammates behind him — just as he has throughout his entire journey. “Absolutely I’ll be watching the draft and seeing where he’s at there. So hopefully he picks a winner,” laughed Hanna.
GHENT, N.Y. (NEWS10) – It’s the night football fans have been waiting for, the first round of the NFL Draft! Tonight, a boy from Columbia County will be taking to the stage to help the New York Jets announce their first-round draft pick. 13-year-old Kyle Stickles has been given the opportunity through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 2020, Stickles at the age of 11 was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma — a rare bone cancer that affects just 400 kids each year. His last chemotherapy treatment was in June 2021.
“He worked so hard,” said his mother, Jamie Stickles.
Leading up to tonight’s announcement, the teen has been practicing in the comfort of his own room. Watch the NFL Draft tonight on ABC and #WakeUpWith10 to see Kyle’s big moment on the world stage and learn about the road it took to get there.
Kyle Stickle just won the hearts of every NFL fan on one of the biggest stages of the sport. Amidst a pretty surprising first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, a young 13-year-old New York Jets fan stole the show with his infectious enthusiasm. When the Jets came up to make their No. 15 overall selection in Thursday night’s draft, Stickles was the one to make the announcement. Stickles was given the opportunity to announce the Jets pick thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Stickles was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 11.
Kyle Stickles may have made the biggest impression of anyone at the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday. Stickles is not a player, coach nor general manager, but rather an extremely passionate New York Jets fan who, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, had the opportunity to announce his favorite team’s first-round pick from the stage in Kansas City. The New York Jets selected Iowa State edge Will McDonald IV with the 15th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. But that wasn’t the highlight of the night for the Jets.
The highlight was the person who announced the pick and officially welcomed McDonald to the Jets. Typically, commissioner Roger Goodell makes the call in the first round. But the Jets went and did a really cool thing by granting a wish to 13-year-old Kyle Stickles through the Make-A-Wish program. Stickles, who was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2020, got to live out every fan’s dream of being up on the draft stage and announcing a team’s pick. But Stickles did more than just announce the Jets’ pick. He left a lasting impression. With the Jets’ pick in and Roger Goodell introducing him to announce the selection, Stickles threw his arms in the air screaming “Let’s Go! Let’s Go!”
When he confidently stepped behind the microphone, Stickles enthusiastically announced, “With the 15th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets! select Will McDonald, linebacker, Iowa State. Let’s Go! Yeah! Let’s Go!” The fired-up youngster immediately became a viral sensation on social media. Jets center Connor McGovern was one of many who appreciated his enthusiasm: In fact, you didn’t need to be a Jets player nor fan of the team to appreciate Kyle’s passion. Stickles was diagnosed with bone cancer in his left leg in 2020 and received chemotherapy until June 2021. He regained the ability to walk after extensive physical therapy. He appeared at a press conference with Jets coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas after the Aaron Rodgers trade earlier in the week. He continued to make the most of life with his special moment Thursday at the 2023 NFL Draft. As for the selection, New York adds to its already loaded defensive group with the McDonald selection. ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ ) True Talent is AGELESS and TIMELESS. WE LOVE BLONDIE!!! ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )
Kylie Jenner’s noticeably thinner lips aren’t the most shocking thing to come out of this year’s Coachella – it’s Debbie Harry’s appearance! The 77-year-old (yes, you read that right!) Blondie’s frontwoman left her fans in awe when she performed at the California music festival last weekend in a dazzling mirror-mosaic ensemble, and her fans couldn’t help but gush over her ageless appearance! The official Blondie Instagram account shared a picture of the “One Way Or Another” singer posing alongside the equally legendary Nile Rodgers, 70, who also joined the band on stage, on April 16th. The first image in the two-image carousel shows the 80s music icon dressed all in black, with her signature blonde hair offering the perfect juxtaposition, and posing alongside the guitarist with her eyes closed. She was also rocking an amazing silver eyeshadow that was *impossible* to ignore, which even complimented Rodgers’ ensemble too! The second picture in the carousel showed the two of them doing their thing on stage; and naturally fans took to social media to rave over not only her appearance, but also the incredible performance Debbie and the band gave!
Fan Comments About ‘Iconic’ Debbie Harry The official Blondie Instagram captioned the post: “Sending out genuine gratitude to the extraordinary @nilerodgers for joining us on the @Coachella stage… unparalleled!” “Two icons!” one fan exclaimed in the comments section, while someone else raved, “Our eternal queen! Blondie!”
“Two of the greatest,” another fan gushed, followed by three red heart emojis, while another called her “unbelievable” and another said she was “iconic.” “Looking amazing, both of you,” praised another fan, while someone else said: “My goodness Debbie. You look as magnificent as you did the first time [I saw] you 44 years ago.”
Deborah Ann Harry (born Angela Trimble; July 1, 1945)
Is an American singer, songwriter and actress, best known as the lead vocalist of the band Blondie. Four of her songs with the band reached No. 1 on the US charts between 1979 and 1981.Born in Miami, Florida, Harry was adopted as an infant and raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey. After attending college, she worked various jobs—as a dancer, a Playboy Bunny and a secretary (including at the BBC in New York)—before her breakthrough in the music industry. Harry co-formed Blondie in 1974 in New York City. The band released its eponymous debut album in 1976, and released a further three albums between then and 1979, including Parallel Lines, which spawned six singles, including “Heart of Glass“. Their fifth album, Autoamerican (1980), afforded Harry and the band further attention, spawning such hits as a cover of “The Tide Is High“, and “Rapture“, the latter of which is considered the first rap song to chart at number one in the United States.[1]
Harry released her debut solo album, KooKoo, in 1981. During a Blondie hiatus, she embarked on an acting career, appearing in lead roles in the neo-noir Union City (1980) and in David Cronenberg‘s body horror film Videodrome (1983). She released her second solo album, 1986’s Rockbird, and starred in John Waters‘s cult dance film Hairspray (1988). Harry went on to release two more solo albums between then and 1993, after which she returned to film with roles in a John Carpenter-directed segment of the horror film Body Bags (1993), and in the drama Heavy (1995).
Blondie reunited in the late 1990s, releasing No Exit (1999), followed by The Curse of Blondie (2003). Harry continued to appear in independent films throughout the 2000s, including Deuces Wild (2002), My Life Without Me (2003) and Elegy (2008). With Blondie, she released the group’s ninth studio album, Panic of Girls, in 2011, followed by Ghosts of Download (2014). The band’s eleventh studio album, 2017’s Pollinator, charted at number 4 in the United Kingdom.
Blondie is an American rock band co-founded by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein.[1] The band was a pioneer in the American new wave scene of the mid-1970s in New York. Their first two albums contained strong elements of punk and new wave, and although highly successful in the UK and Australia, Blondie was regarded as an underground band in the U.S. until the release of Parallel Lines in 1978.
Blondie disbanded after the release of its sixth studio album, The Hunter, in 1982. Debbie Harry continued to pursue a solo career with varied results after taking a few years off to care for partner Chris Stein, who was diagnosed with pemphigus, a rare autoimmune disease of the skin.[4] The band re-formed in 1997, achieving renewed success and their sixth number one single in the United Kingdom with “Maria” in 1999, exactly 20 yrs. after their 1st UK No. 1 single (“Heart of Glass”).
The group toured and performed throughout the world[5] during the following years, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.[6]
Blondie has sold around 40 million records worldwide[7][8] and is still active. The band’s eleventh studio album, Pollinator, was released on May 5, 2017.
Blondie devotees are in shock with Debbie Harry’s seemingly ageless Coachella performance, She has, is and will always be a true Iconic Legend.
After seeing Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry perform at the California music festival, fans were shocked to learn of her advanced age, and many rushed to social media to express their amazement. The Blondie bombshell is still going strong at the ripe old age of 77, surprising many. To the delight of the crowds, Harry performed in a bodysuit made of broken mirrors and black cloth. As she sang into the microphone, she also beamed her famous grin at the audience.
Debbie‘s distinctive blonde hair is still intact, and she styled it in a short, wavy bob. The singer’s makeup was minimal overall, but she did use heavy black eyeshadow to draw attention to her eyes. She used thick black sunglasses with her grey utilitarian style gloves and pants to complete her ensemble.
Debbie sang several Blondie hits during her Coachella set, and was joined onstage by Nile Rodgers. Debbie performed her greatest hits under the California sun to an enthusiastic crowd that sang along. Fans couldn’t help but swoon over the Blondie star’s voice when they went to a YouTube video of her appearance to comment on Harry’s set. One enthusiastic supporter said in all capitals, “Omg, she is still freaking amazing, love it!
Good for her and amazing for us!”
“Debbie Harry and Nile Rodgers were the high points of an otherwise underwhelming Coachella” another writer penned. Third die hard supporter: “Blondie showing to these kids what rock ‘n’ roll is.” Many were shocked to hear Debbie was so old, while Harry was praised as “iconic, legendary, and fantastic.” Other festival-goers took to Twitter to discuss Debbie’s performance at Coachella, and many had nothing but positive things to say about the 80s icon.
“Blondie had the best set at this year’s Coachella, even at 70+ years old Debbie Harry is still killing it. Only performers that I recall can actually sing.” A fan account tweeted some photos of Debbie performing, describing her as “what a true legendary and iconic frontwoman looks like” before they admitted they “couldn’t believe her set happened”.
During their set at day one of Coachella 2023 (April 14), Blondie welcomed Nile Rodgers out onstage to join them for two songs: their 1980 hit ‘Rapture’, and Deborah Harry’s 1981 solo track ‘Backfired’. Sending out gratitude to the extraordinary @nilerodgers for joining us on @Coachella stage… unparalleled!
READ MORE: Coachella 2023: 10 unmissable new acts to see at this year’s festival Rodgers has long been a part of the extended Blondie family – he produced the album that ‘Backfired’ appears on (‘KooKoo’), and ‘Rapture’ was notably inspired by the Chic song ‘Good Time’. He performed guitar on both songs, following the band’s cover of ‘The Tide Is High’ by The Paragons.
The official Blondie Instagram captioned the post: “Sending out genuine gratitude to the extraordinary @nilerodgers for joining us on the @Coachella stage… unparalleled!” “Two icons!” one fan exclaimed in the comments section, while someone else raved,
“Our eternal queen! Blondie!” Another fan said, “You were amazing,” followed by two hand clapping emojis and fire emoji, while another fan said,
“Debbie Harry is such an ageless goddess!” Where’s the lie?
“Two of the greatest,” another fan gushed, followed by three red heart emojis, while another called her “unbelievable” and another said she was “iconic.” “Looking amazing, both of you,” praised another fan, while someone else said: “My goodness Debbie. You look as magnificent as you did the first time [I saw] you 44 years ago.”
Twitter Comments About Debbie Harry’s Ageless Appearance. The praise continued over on Twitter too, with one fan stating: “Blondie had the best set at this year’s #Coachella even at 70+ years old Debbie Harry is still killing it. Only performer that I recall that actually sang.” Another tweeted: “@BlondieOfficial live from #Coachella was brilliant. Debbie Harry is still a goddess at 77.” Another fan said, “Debbie Harry aka @BlondieOfficial looks gorgeous tonight on the Mojave Stage at Coachella,” alongside some images of her in action.
“Nah Coachella belonged to Blondie Debbie Harry so much class. She should have headlined,” said another, while someone else said what we are all thinking: “I’m obsessed with @BlondieOfficial Debbie Harry’s Coachella outfit.” “This is what a true legendary and most iconic frontwoman looks like,” praised another fan on Twitter, also adding, “I still can’t believe this happened.” “The best of all time,” agreed another fan, one has to admire at that age to have such energy, voice and style. Always amazing Blondie always loved. Thank you for continuing.

Biden is systematically destroying what is left of this Constitutional Republic. In a Democracy the Mob Rules | Fear God not man, Don’t Comply. . He was installed by #globalists who want us to think he is merely incompetent. The truth is there are several past presidents, both Democrat & Republican, who are celebrating the methodical destruction of America. The Clintons, the Obamas, the Bushes, the Bidens, et al are to blame for this fiasco. They should be hanged for treason IMO.
Let the truth unfurl itself. There are abilities provided to WE the people in the Declaration of Independence to address IF this ever happened. Our founding fathers were geniuses… One Nation under GOD.
“Treason” comes from the Latin noun “traditio” which means “handing over” something & that is EXACTLY what Biden is doing – delivering our Republic to the #CCP & the #WEF. Why haven’t these presidents been impeached or indicted @GOP ?
Yes and it’s all by plan people need to wake up this is not by his blundering this is a plan by the one world order to destroy the last country in the world that is free
we need to stand united to stop the destruction!!! To the world you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world#PayItForward#Conservative#ChooseLife We can not wait #2024
Here’s what my tour around America taught me about the weird, woke and wicked. I’ve been on a cross country book tour for the last five months speaking with families and children across America at public libraries sharing my beliefs about faith, family and country.
You may already know that drag queens have been cross-dressing for children and appearing in many of our nation’s public libraries for years. And, you may have heard that I’ve been visiting these same public libraries—those that are willing to host me— and other venues doing my own story hour together with Brave Books. Families have been pouring into my events by the hundreds, even the thousands.
When I speak to these people,
I share the timeless value of biblical wisdom and the “Fruit of the Spirit” with children and their parents. I warm the room, shine the light by reading stories to spellbound audiences from my new book, “As You Grow in FAITH.”
After I conclude my remarks, panicked parents often crowd around, pressing me with hard questions. They are pleading; they earnestly long for a return to wholesome,
These people want to know: * “Why is there a seemingly sudden increase in pedophiles, sexual deviants? Why do we have so many amoral—or plainly immoral—educators, school administrators, school boards, politicians, community leaders, and even judges, hell-bent on advancing the sexualization of our innocent children, and pushing perversion into the hearts and minds of the most impressionable among us?
*Why are too many of these leaders hiding their aberrant “sex education” and “gender-affirming” curricula from the parents of their students, stripping moms and dads of their rights to determine when and how their children are exposed to sensitive topics in school?
* What do these groups of decadent influencers have to gain? In short, their ambition is the total breakdown and collapse of the family. Their target is our children. Their goal is social chaos. In some cases, they have been successful. Tragically successful.
While some seem to enjoy preying on innocent children to satisfy their own sexually perverse urges, I believe there is a more sinister goal, a noxious construct these influencers hope to build by targeting our littles.
Even if the perpetrators are not conscious of it, behind the scenes of the weird, woke, and wicked is the work of German political philosopher, Karl Marx, author of “The Communist Manifesto”: eliminate religion, break up the family, bust society as we know it; out of the disruption and disorganization will rise the opportunity to seize power to “fundamentally change America.” Or as Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution recently stated, “Their goal is to deconstruct America.”
Watch “Kirk Cameron speaks to Fox News Digital outside New York Public Library”. However, “Fabulous Felicia,” the neighborhood drag queen, isn’t the real problem. The real orchestrators, the elites who know exactly what they’re doing by pushing woke textbooks for kids and encouraging an upside-down media morality, that’s the problem. It’s part of an overall plan to disrupt, influence, and indoctrinate our children so as to change our country, thus revolutionizing our future.
Community disorganization is the first step in community re-organization. In the words of these social revolutionaries, “All change means disorganization of the old and organization of the new.”
By separating children from the “negative influence of parents,” disrupting society’s present moral structure and systematically displacing Judeo-Christian values, Progressives are unleashing social chaos to create a void that their new social order will quickly fill. What can we do to save our children from this moral kidnapping and our nation from this cultural hijacking?
What must we do?
Our forefathers and foremothers would offer this culture-preserving advice from the Bible: “Train up your children in the way they should go. Husbands, love your wives. Also, wives, honor your husbands. Love God and one another sincerely, from the heart. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Honor one another above yourselves. Don’t be lazy, but work hard. Rejoice in hope . . . be patient in trouble . . . and keep on praying.
Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” (Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 5: 25,33; Romans 12:9-21)
Watch: “Kirk Cameron shares story time at Scarsdale Public Library in New York”. If you’re a parent, if you long for a return to wholesome, God-honoring values . . . if you want to salvage this country and its biblical values for your children . . . stop complaining about the culture. Instead, be brave and start creating the culture you want for your children. Lead by example. Show your kids and grandkids what genuine faith and moral integrity look like. Steel your God-given backbone.
Let your love for your children conquer your fears.
Use your own home as a safe place to lovingly uproot the power of evil in your neighborhood.
Plant seeds of truth, beauty and goodness.
Pray up, speak up, and get in the fight now.
Embrace your children; warm your country; Your God is eager to use you.
Whose agenda is worse – China’s, or the US Deep State’s?
SO, stop ordering Chinese take-out! (edited)
The Deep State does the work of its father, the Bilderbergs. The Bilderbergs and their WEF and corporate “partners” (like Blackrock for example) are together the Beast of Revelation 13. And the immoral Western governments led by the Leftist US government and its Deep State agencies are together with the False Prophet of Revelation 13, trying to force the Beast’s agenda on the Western nations under their control. All evil roads we’re seeing today in the West lead back to the Bilderberg Beast mafia and its False Prophet enforcers.
Trump is the ONLY candidate that has the desire, motivation, and more importantly, the ability to ‘right’ all of Biden’s wrongs on day one, Rep. Greg Steube.

Another thing that few know about is that on Jan 6, 2017,
Jeh Johnson, under Obama, placed all 8000 election jurisdictions in the states under DHS control with the pretext of preventing “Russian interference in elections.” That explains 2020 and the campaign to go after those who questioned the elections. We need to bring attention to this. This is unconstitutional and also why haven’t Republican election lawyers gone after this. Or Congress?

1. Repossess all property & assets owned by the CCP in the US 2. Prohibit Wall Street from investing in CCP companies. 3. Stop federal funding for colleges that take money from China 4. Expose Congress members who get money from CCP partners like Sequoia. 5. Begin decoupling from China with stopping sourcing of pharmaceuticals from China. 6. “It would be unthinkable,” he said at a press conference 17 Apr 2023. The CCP has set up 102 overseas police stations in 53 countries around the world. Why something so unacceptable can be so common? DHS (United States Homeland Security) head Alejandro Mayorkas said he had directed a “90-day department-wide sprint to assess how the threats posed by the PRC will evolve and how we can be best positioned to guard against future manifestations of this threat”.

People on Earth won’t obviously notice most of these effects, but you may see brighter auroras. 13 times solar storms caused freak events on Earth, from detonating mines to crashing financial markets – Search (bing.com)
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Mathew Owens, a professor of space physics at the University of Reading who researches space science and weather as it relates to solar activity and the solar maximum. It’s been edited for length and clarity. We’re close to the next solar maximum, predicted to begin in 2025.
The solar maximum represents a peak in solar activity when the sun’s magnetic field reaches its strongest and most disordered and dynamic point. Increased solar activity can cause extreme space weather events, including solar flares and eruptions. It can also disrupt radio communications and the power grid and have serious health consequences for astronauts. The hazards are primarily to large-scale infrastructure. On an individual level, people on Earth are unlikely to directly see the effects of solar maximum.
When the sun is more active, it emits more charged particles into space that can intercept Earth and disrupt our planet’s magnetic field. Solar cycles typically last 11 years, and the solar maximum happens roughly in the middle of each cycle. The last solar maximum occurred between 2012-2014 and was particularly weak — one of the smallest in about 100 years. Consequently, space weather was generally weaker than normal. This upcoming solar maximum, however, seems like it may return to average values. That means we may see more of an impact on space weather and related potential consequences.
Shows the directions of magnetic lines on the sun. Solar activity happens in the first place due to the churning motions of plasma inside the sun, which creates and changes the sun’s magnetic field. The sun’s magnetic field reaches peak strength during solar maximum, generating an increase in events like solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Solar flares consist of high-energy photons, like X-rays, that can increase the ionization in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and disrupt radio communications.
CMEs, on the other hand, are eruptions of solar magnetic fields and material that fuel geomagnetic storms. These disturbances to the Earth’s magnetic field can damage the power distribution grid. During the solar maximum, we’ll also see more bursts of very high-energy particles traveling toward Earth. These bursts are around four times as likely to occur during a solar maximum than a solar minimum. And, since the particles in these bursts are radiation, they pose a major health risk to astronauts and passengers and crew on high-latitude and high-altitude aircraft. They can also damage space hardware and lead to satellite loss.

You probably won’t notice most of these effects. Many effects of the solar maximum are ephemeral, which remains one of the biggest challenges in studying space weather. For instance, it’s often difficult to conclusively link a problem in the power grid to space weather — even if solar activity did cause that problem. The one concrete effect we can confidently predict is that you’ll likely see auroras, aka the Northern and Southern Lights, more frequently at different latitudes. During the solar maximum, the greater number of solar particles interacting with molecules in Earth’s atmosphere causes brighter displays of the auroras that can stretch farther north or south than usual.
Scientists have also found signals of the solar cycle — like changes in temperature and ozone levels — in the Earth’s stratosphere. While scientists do include these changes from the sun when considering long-term climate variations, these effects on the climate aren’t as significant or severe as factors like volcanoes, carbon dioxide emissions, and other human activity.
Our reliance on tech raises the stakes: Our collective reliance on technology and space increases each year, which makes space weather an ever-increasing risk. The threat it poses to the power grid poses the biggest concern, not in the least due to the cascading hazards presented by losing power for an extended period.
It all comes down to probability, though. A stronger solar cycle just means a greater probability of extreme space weather events. It doesn’t guarantee extreme space weather. In fact, extreme space weather can occur even in small solar cycles. During the small solar maximum of cycle 24, a spacecraft far from Earth encountered one of the most energetic CMEs ever seen. A CME of that scale directed at Earth could have caused serious disruptions to the power distribution grid or major damage to satellite hardware.
Main article: Number of the beast In the Textus Receptus manuscripts of the New Testament, the Book of Revelation (13:17–18) cryptically asserts 666 to be “the man’s number” or “the number of a man” (depending on how the text is translated) associated with the Beast, antagonistic creature appearing briefly about 2/3rds into apocalyptic vision.
Some manuscripts[which?] of the original Koine Greek use the symbols χξϛ chixistigma (or χξϝ with a digamma), while other manuscripts spell out the number in words.[5] In modern popular culture, 666 has become one of the most widely recognized symbols for the Antichrist or, alternatively, the devil. Earnest references to the number occur both among apocalypticism Christian groups & in explicitly anti-Christian subcultures. References in contemporary Western art or literature is, more likely than not, intentional references to the Beast symbolism. Such popular references are therefore too numerous to list. It is common to see the symbolic role of the integer 666 transferred to the numerical digit sequence 6-6-6. Some people take the Satanic associations of 666 so seriously that they actively avoid things related to 666 or the digits 6-6-6. This is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. The Number of the Beast is cited as 616 in some early biblical manuscripts, the earliest known instance being in Papyrus 115.[6][7]
Is the sum of all the numbers on a roulette wheel (0 through 36).[8] Was a winning lottery number in the 1980 Pennsylvania Lottery scandal, in which equipment was tampered to favor a 4 or 6 as each of the three individual random digits.[10] Was the original name of the Macintosh SevenDust computer virus that was discovered in 1998.[citation needed] It is also the name of an extension that SevenDust can add to an uninfected Macintosh.[11] The number is a frequent visual element of Aryan Brotherhoodtattoos.[12] Aleister Crowley adopted the title “the Beast 666”.[13] As such, 666 is also associated with him, his work, and his religious philosophy of Thelema.
Molar mass of the high-temperature superconductorYBa2Cu3O7. In Chinese numerology, the number is considered to be lucky and is often displayed in shop windows and neon signs.[14][15] In China, 666 can mean “everything goes smoothly” (the number six has the same pronunciation as the character 溜, which means “smooth”.[16]
Jerry Jones, 76, was a pioneer of NFL draft prognostication HIS LIFE REMEMBERED, Died Jul. 16, 2012 from lung cancer at his retirement home on Saint Simons Island, Ga. RiP…
This year being my 50th NFL Draft that I have been around, Every Year at this time: The NFL Draft makes me miss Jerry Jones. He created, ‘The Drugstore List’, one of the first NFL draft guides. He was a regular contributor to WLW from the days of Bob Trumpy all the way through my show, before he passed away several years ago. He was such a kind and knowledgeable man.
His guide was simple and informative. “For 40 years, pharmacist Jerry Jones filled yellow booklets with his take on the top college players and predictions for the National Football League draft. Mr. Jones in 1970 started making the yellow booklets, known as the Drugstore List, while working as a pharmacist in Mariemont. Ohio as something to do while his wife played cards, he once told the Enquirer.
Mr. Jones and his Drugstore List grew into valuable sources of information for NFL teams and pioneered the art of NFL draft prognostication. NFL Team Values 2022 Before computers, ESPN and sports analyst Mel Kiper, there was Jerry Jones, said former Bengal tight end and sports announcer Bob Trumpy. Trumpy first met Mr. Jones when Trump hosted a sports radio show on WLW in 1981. “I can’t tell you how many times I saw the Drugstore List on the desk of NFL scouts and general managers all over the league,” Trumpy said.
In the early years, a few self-made draft experts toiled in solitude, tracking down tape, working the phones, analyzing prospects—and becoming trusted sources of info for coaches and GMs. As the NFL draft grew into a juggernaut and the internet offered a platform to all comers, mocks emerged as a mini-industry with a massive audience.
But has the beast gotten out of control? No one seems to remember who penned the first mock draft, or when the form first came to be. But it is safe to assume that it was born at some point during rise of The Draftniks, a small group of self-made experts who began also evaluating NFL draft prospects essentially as a hobby.
In this age of pompous punditry on a landscape scattered with haters and baiters, who have big egos like Mel Kiper and Todd McKay who are lucky to get 10 first round draft picks right in their Mock Drafts we bring you someone completely different: Jones owned a pharmacy in Mariemont and was a draftnik before there was a thing.
Jones started following the draft as a hobby. In 1978, he began publishing The Drugstore List, a 30-some page pamphlet with his breakdown of each position. Nowadays his printing press is the oldest of his three Apple computers in the office of his retirement home in St. Simon Island, Ga. where he’s got three VCRs spinning on Saturday afternoons in the falls, as well as two DVD players. But his rankings remain as pure as the first mock draft he sketched out on a pad in the early ’70s. He ranks players from rounds one to seven and free agents, breaking up the rounds with the top (A), middle (B), end (C). As in 1-A is the best. Which happens to be how the doctors have classified his cancer. Jones, 75, ever the numbers aficionado, observes, “The lower the number and the letter, the more that is preferred.” Jones, whose hobby launched into a career when New York Times NFL writer Bill Wallace used him and two other draftniks in a 1977 story that included the legendary Joel Buchsbaum, remains as up-to-date as Cris Collinsworth’s new website, footballpros.com, for which he writes.
The best Bengals draft pick? No doubt, he says, 1980’s Anthony Muñoz, the greatest left tackle who ever lived. When the Bengals picked him third overall, the experts, including Jones, were stunned. He had more knee surgeries than games played his senior year and he only played in one: The Rose Bowl. Paul Brown’s comments after he drafted Anthony Muñoz he knew he drafted the right man. Muñoz silenced the critics who thought he wouldn’t make it in the pro football ranks after three major knee surgeries in college at USC. And proved them wrong, racking up eleven Pro Bowl berths and nine First-Team All-Pro selections from 1980 to 1992. He also became the first Bengals player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“I’ve got words of encouragement for Da’Quan Bowers,” says Jones of Clemson’s highly-ranked defensive end who he’s got as a 1-A even though his stock is taking a hit with talk of his knee injuries. “Just look at Anthony Muñoz. He’s the most prestigious Bengal of all-time. If I’m (Bowers), I wouldn’t get too worked up about it.” But Jones won’t delve into what he thinks is the worst Bengals pick of all-time. “That would assume I know more than these guys,” he says while defending the drafting of Ohio State defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson overall at No. 1 in 1994. “By then I was pretty tied into people around the league,” he says, “and everyone else would have taken him No. 1.”Jones can talk about sitting next to Bengals founder Paul Brown in the 1989 draft and in the next clause fret about the Bengals’ present-day problems at quarterback and his belief that two quarterbacks will go in the top 10 despite their flaws. His oxygen needs oxygen after Tuesday’s 68-minute phone call, which doesn’t surprise WLW talkmaster Lance McAlister in the least.
“I can ask Jerry a question, get up, go get a drink, and come back,” says McAlister, who has hosted him several times down through the years during draft season. “The thing about Jerry is that he has absolutely no ego. He does it as a hobby. He does it because he loves it. With some other people, you get the sense that they’re trying to sell you something. Never with Jerry. And you know he doesn’t have an agenda for schools, players or teams, anything like that.”
“I think there will be four quarterbacks taken in the first round. Two early, two late. Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert go in the top 10, and then I think someone is going to take a gamble on Ryan Mallett and I think Jake Locker, too, before you get to the second round.”
Let’s face it. Jones was a Bengals fan. He grew up in Mariemont and bought his pharmacy in the town square on Wooster Pike. There was no ego on the sign out front, either, which said, “Horton’s.” You Never change the sign if business is still good,” he says. I didn’t have to see my name on the sign and business was always good, but the legend is that he put his two children and two stepchildren through college with the success of The Drugstore List. Not quite. Scott, his oldest, an emergency room doctor in Fort Worth, Texas, put himself through Stanford Medical School. “It helped a great deal back then, believe me, although today it would be a little different,” Jones says, politely not giving up any subscription figures. “I can tell you four figures. But the heart of it is still Cincinnati.”
There was a time Jones did this stuff for free and just handed it out among friends. It all literally started at the top when he and his buddy, Tom Hunter, a school guidance counselor, had dinner at The Celestial on Mount Adams the night before the 1972 draft. After they mocked out the first couple of rounds, Jones exclaimed, “Let’s do the whole thing.” And that’s when it was 17 rounds. “You can do that, I can’t,” said Hunter and his friend has been doing it ever since, which is funny because he detests mock drafts. “One trade and the whole thing is shot,” Jones says. “A couple of years later I had a friend who said to me, ‘I know some guys who would be interested in these.’ It turned out they were some Bengals assistant coaches.”
He started from ground zero: He wrote to the colleges asking to name their top prospects and learning immediately to take their heights and weights with a grain of salt. Jones bought every magazine that had a picture of a football and worked the phone, all the while running the business and raising the kids. *”Things don’t change much from the second edition to the final. You have a case like (Arkansas tackle) Demarcus Love, who was very highly-rated earlier in the year. Then Ohio State gave him fits in the Sugar Bowl and Mallett can’t move anyway. They just destroyed him, and then he didn’t play well at all in the Senior Bowl and now they’re wondering if he’s a guard.” *
Then it took off. Jones remembers Dick Forbes of The Cincinnati Enquirer being a big boost for him locally, and there was the hit from Bill Wallace, as well as a call from Tom Harmon, the Michigan Hall of Famer (“father of Mark Harmon,” Jones says) to write a story for a long-forgotten publication. Then when Buchsbaum went to Pro Football Weekly, Jones went to Football News for 100 bucks a month and an advertisement trade. Next thing anyone knew, he was on the radio with Bob Trumpy before the 1979 draft urging the Bengals to take a Missouri tight end at No. 12. Cincinnati took LSU running back Charles Alexander; the Chargers took Kellen Winslow at No. 13. “But they did get Danny Ross in the second round,” Jones says of the most prolific Bengals tight end ever. Jones kept grinding through the ’80s and the advent of the NFL scouting combine. It would take him a couple of weeks, but eventually he’d get the 40 times and the other stats from the combine, including the test scores. “It just goes to show you,” he says, “the stuff is going to leak out. If a guy like me can get it … “
But a guy like him worked hard to get it. He always puts a list of people who have helped him down through the years on the back of his rankings. “They have supplied information, contacts, publicity, and confidence that keeps me working on THE DRUGSTORE LIST,” Jones says. It is a stew of Who’s Who in the game. From the old personnel guys still in the gig (Pete Brown and Gil Brandt) to coaches in (Dick LeBeau) and out (Chuck Knox), and media types from Andy Furman to Len Pasquarelli, Jones makes no bones about listing who has helped him along the way. “That’s the way I was raised,” he says. “I’m not deep into religion, but I’m big on God. If God did indeed create man, then the worst thing you can pull off is not treating that creation decently. You just have to be nice, that’s all.” So it is no surprise, then, that McAlister, who is on the list, says he can’t remember a time when he asked Jones to come on the air and he said, “Can’t do it then,” or “Try me later.” It’s always “Whenever you need me.” But you can bet every name that’s helped him isn’t on the list. A sleuth must have some discretion.
“Something that has really helped is the Bengals assistants,” says Jones, who won’t name them. “When they go to another team and I send one to them, other people ask about them and they get passed on.” Jones doesn’t like to play what he calls, “The Monday morning game.” He finds second-guessing a bit dishonest. He looks at the Bengals 2001 and 2010 drafts and calls them as good as you’ll find. He looks at a 2006 draft of Johnathan Joseph, Andrew Whitworth, Frostee Rucker and Domata Peko, and a 2009 draft of Rey Maualuga, Michael Johnson, Kevin Huber, Morgan Trent and Bernard Scott and says, “I look at it who is still on the team and contributing and that’s an impressive list. I think they draft as well as anyone.”
“These guys get so wrapped up in speed. What good does it do if a guy runs a 4.35 (40-yard dash) and can’t catch?” Jones is that rare draftnik that has lived not to tell about his experiences in the war room. Before he did a radio gig with Bengals head coach Sam Wyche after the 1988 season, Wyche told him, “The old man says you can come into the room during the draft.” “Sam has been known to joke around so I called Paul Brown’s office,” Jones says. “Sure enough, they gave me directions to come in and park. When I walked in, Sam sat me down right next to Paul Brown. It was the single greatest moment I’ve ever had doing this. To be invited into the draft by Paul Brown. It was the first time I ever met him.” But Jones won’t say much about it all. He’s not a kiss-and-tell guy. He does allow the position coaches had a lot of pull and that Brown would end the discussions with, “Is he better than what we have?”
“Which is a pretty good way of doing it,” Jones says. Dave Lapham, the former Bengals guard and long-time radio analyst who always blows out the end to the draft season on the radio with a Jones marathon session, likes the way he does it. “He’s got his contacts, that’s for sure,” Lapham says. “To me, the proof is in longevity. Look how long he’s been doing it. And with Jerry, his word is gold, so he’s got sources that swear by him. You look at his office and all his files and you know he’s legitimate.” Lapham, rated the fourth-best guard in the nation in 1974 by DSL as Jones recalls, has seen Jones’s St. Simon office because Jerry and his wife Judy invited him down several years ago and they were the gracious hosts. Great restaurants. Great beach with pictures of family all over his office. “I get suspicious of people,” Jones says, “who don’t have pictures of people around. “So it is no surprise that when it comes to the new breed of draftnik, Jones is kind. He respects them. He particularly thinks Mike Mayock of NFL Network is interesting.
“I respect anyone who works hard and tells the truth,” he says. Here’s one truth: Jones, who retired south always invariably would always starts off a phone conversation inquiring about the weather in Cincinnati and then smugly gives his report. “He’s the eternal optimist; he was always upbeat,” Lapham says. “I don’t think he’s ever had a bad day.”
“The quarterback thing has me worried. But you never really know with that position. I always kidded Bucko Kilroy of the Patriots about Tom Brady. I’d ask him, ‘If you knew he was so good, why did you wait until the sixth round to take him?’ And he said, ‘We weren’t looking to take a quarterback before then.’ Brady? Ironically, I had him in the sixth.”
The Draft Daze interview tour continued with The Drugstore List’s Jerry Jones, who’s not to be confused with the Dallas Cowboys owner. This Jerry Jones has been producing books on the draft’s prospects since 1972 and has been inside the legendary Paul Brown’s war room. As Dick Leabeu put it, “Jones was into the draft before it was cool to be into it.”
Jones published it until his death in 2012. The media loved Jones. He was a nice guy who would always return your call. He was remarkably good with his predictions and remarkably humble. “I miss that guy,” WLW Sports Talk host Lance McAlister said.
“I think of him every year at this time. I had him on every year multiple times a week and live during our draft shows. The guy had no ego. He was always straight forward and basic in his approach.”
It was Sports Talk that got Jones his first big media break. “It all started by accident,” said Bob Trumpy, the original Sports Talk host. “He was bored to death and started putting together his list. He sent it to me. I’m like, ‘What the hell is this?’ It had Mariemont, Ohio on it. ‘Who is this guy?’ I didn’t pay much attention to it really. “It wasn’t a book. It was sheets. We would do the draft live. I’m looking at it. I’m like, ‘Holy Christ, this guy knows what he’s doing.’ When the draft was over, I called him. “I said, ‘Look, I don’t know who you are, but your list was almost perfect.’ I said, ‘Come down here. I want to meet you.’ That’s how our relationship began.” Trumpy would have Jones on his show three or four times before the draft and on the day of the draft. Trumpy’s description of the Drugstore List is spot-on. Jones typed the early one on a typewriter. The sheets were stapled together. The cover was gold with a drawing of a quarterback handing off. It was the opposite of slick.
But the information was top-rate. Jones sold the list for $13 the last year it was published. Trumpy would see copies on general managers’ desks when he’d go in to do games for NBC. When I covered University of Cincinnati and Miami University football, I’d make a call to Jones before the draft. If a player was even a fringe prospect, Jones could give you a rundown on him: His size, his 40 time, etc. Jones had the respect of NFL insiders. Gil Brandt, the legendary Dallas Cowboys’ personnel director, endorsed The Drugstore List. “It’s the best prospect list put out by someone who’s not working for an NFL team,” read Brandt’s testimonial. Jones was close to Bengals owner Mike Brown. Jones would be the only non-employee in the Bengals war room on draft day. Those insiders helped with compiling the list. But Jones spent five or six hours a day year-round working on the list, capturing as many college games as possible from his three VCRs. Jones always kept score on his work. He told the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2012 he correctly predicted 77 percent of both the top 50 and top 100 selections between 2007 and 2011. “He put the info together and got it out in a simple form that was easy to understand,” McAlister said. “I loved the draft guide. No glitz. No glamour. Just solid info. One of the easiest and nicest people I have ever worked with. Nothing better than going to the mailbox to find his draft guide.”
On the day before the funeral, the coffin was placed on lit de parade allowing the public, an estimated 100,000 people to file past and get a final glance of The Gong. Marley’s long locks had been replaced with a wig as his own hair had been lost during cancer treatment in New York, Miami, Mexico, and finally the Bavarian clinic of Dr Josef Issels, following the diagnosis of a malignant melanoma four years earlier.
The Rastafarians told the mourning people that there was no reason to grieve as death meant nothing. Bob had not gone anywhere – he was still among us. The day of the funeral began with an hour-long service for family and close friends at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, presided over by His Eminence Abuna Yesehaq, the church’s archbishop in the western hemisphere, who had baptised Marley in New York the previous November, just after his last triumphal concerts at Madison Square Garden. Mary Jane Rathbun and her punchy brownies
There was a real Mary Jane.
Mary Jane Rathbun (December 22, 1922 – April 10, 1999) claimed to have invented the Marijuana Brownie. She started mixing marijuana into cakes in the 1950s. In the early 1980s, Mary Jane (yes – it was her real name) was cooking over 4,000 brownies a week for AIDS patients at the San Francisco General Hospital. Despite multiple arrests, she remained an active advocate for the medicinal properties of marijuana until the day she died.
An insight into her indomitable character can be glimpsed in this vignette from August 25, 1992. The Sonoma County district attorney tried to charge the then 69-year-old with two marijuana possession felonies. Her response was concise: “If the narcs think I’m gonna stop baking brownies for my kids with AIDS, they can go fuck themselves in Macy’s window.” Three years before her death, Mary co-authored a cookbook with fellow activist Dennis Peron (April 8, 1945 – January 27, 2018), Brownie Mary’s Marijuana Cookbook and Dennis Peron’s Recipe for Social Change. The cookbook featured recipes for black bean soup, chip dip, spaghetti sauce and chestnut stuffing. Her famous brownie recipe was not included. Why not? “When and if they legalize it, I’ll sell my brownie recipe to Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines,” she said, “and take the profits and buy an old Victorian for my kids with AIDS.”
One man paved the way for medical marijuana
In 1982, a man with a rare and painful type of bone tumor condition, Irvin Rosenfeld, sued the federal government for access to marijuana medicine and won, paving the way for others with qualifying conditions. Today, he gets his marijuana from the federal government, picking up 300 joints every 30 days. After California changed its marijuana laws in 1976, prankster Danny Finegood hung curtains over the Hollywood sign to change it to “Hollyweed. It happened again on New Year’s Day, 2017, when another prankster scaled Mount Lee to change the sign.
In 2017, farmers in Italy started cultivating cannabis in order to decontaminate polluted soil. The plants helped pull heavy metals out of the ground. TARANTO, Italy — Farmers in a region of Italy once known for cheeses have turned to cultivating a type of cannabis — not to smoke or sell — but to decontaminate polluted soil. The hemp they’re growing contains very little THC — compound that makes people high. Vincenzo Fornaro showed CBS News an empty farm, once packed with more than 600 sheep. “For generations, our family produced ricotta and meat,” Fornaro recalled. It wasn’t until 2008 when Italy’s government discovered the toxic chemical dioxin in his sheep and slaughtered the entire herd. The culprit was just a mile away.
Contaminants spewing from a massive steel plant — Europe’s largest — meant Fornaro could never have grazing animals again. To clean up his land he decided to try a rather unusual experiment.Fornaro planted industrial hemp to try to leach contaminants from the soil. The science is called phytoremediation — a process where contaminants are absorbed by the fast-growing roots of the cannabis plant which stores or, in some cases, transforms toxins into a harmless substance. “You think this marijuana is the future of your farm?” Doane asks Fornaro. Although Fornaro’s crop is past harvest and doesn’t look like much now, phytoremediation is proven to pull heavy metals from soil. It was used following the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl to remove radioactive strontium and cesium.
Cannabis’ future
Claudio Natile sells some of the thousand’s products made from industrial hemp including hemp oil, beer and pasta. “We want to eliminate the prejudice against cannabis usage” Natile said.
He took CBS News to an apartment complex built from hemp composite materials. So passers-by don’t miss the point, the grass out front is cannabis. “We must innovate,” Fornaro told CBS News, “and develop in a way that’s ecologically sound.” It’s in the shadow of the steel factory in Italy that Fornaro is pegging his future to a very different type of plant. Weapon of war
During World War II, the Office of Strategic Services investigated marijuana as a means of inducing detainees to spill their secrets. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has always been depicted as a shadowy organization. All of its actions are top-secret, classified assignments. Therefore, it is only natural that it gets linked with various plots, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. While most of these conspiracy theories are unfounded nonsense, a little nugget of truth gets uncovered every so often. However, in the case of the CIA and marijuana, it is more like an entire warehouse of information is available! The link between our nation’s intelligence agencies and cannabis predates the 1947 formation of the CIA. Ever since then, the CIA has publicly decried marijuana. However, in private, it has used cannabis for a wide range of purposes. Allegedly the organization went as far as creating its own strain!
Want to learn more about the CIA’s covert marijuana actions? Well, then, we suggest that you light up a joint, sit back, and read on.
The CIA Used Cannabis as a ‘Truth Serum’ During World War II, the CIA’s predecessor, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), began to actively seek out drugs they could use to help interrogate POWs. The National Research Council (NRC) began looking into the matter. The NRC formed a committee that included the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) Commissioner, Harry Anslinger. Anslinger was the architect of Reefer Madness and appeared to believe every word contained in this propaganda piece.
The FBN provided the OSS scientists with several drugs. Eventually, the team settled on an active chemical compound in marijuana called tetrahydrocannabinol acetate. While the OSS hoped that the cannabis compound would act as a ‘truth serum,’ it did nothing of the sort. However, it did make prisoners high and distracted them to the point where interrogators could extract information occasionally.
An FBN and OSS operative named George White became a vital part of the search for a reliable truth serum. In May 1943, the OSS and FBN tested the super-pot on George White, which knocked him senseless. One of the program’s goals was to determine which drug traffickers were helping the Nazis in France and which ones were part of the Resistance. White then tested his ‘truth serum’ on a mobster named August Del Grazio. According to Douglas Valentine, the author of ‘The Strength of the Wolf,’ it worked incredibly well. Del Grazio revealed a remarkable amount of information about the drug trade. Valentine claims the details were so extraordinary that the OSS redacted them from documents before their release decades later. After that, the OSS used the super-pot on Nazi POWs. They continued using the drug on people until at least 1947. Eventually, though, they determined that cannabis was not a reliable truth serum. In 2015, legal marijuana outsold Girl Scout cookies.
The legal marijuana business in the US raked in between $3 billion and $3.4 billion in sales in 2015, according to the newly published 2016 Marijuana Business Factbook. As Quartz’s Ana Campoy points out, that means US consumers spent more money on medicinal and recreational weed last year than Girl Scout cookies, which saw $776 million in sales. To put this in perspective, in 2015 legal cannabis outsold Girl Scout cookies. The total cannabis market in the U.S., which includes illegal sales, is estimated to be in the range of $40-$45 billion. This means the marijuana market is bigger than craft beer, wine and organic food.
Sales of recreational marijuana could surpass medical marijuana as early as 2018, according to a new report from Marijuana Business Daily. MBD estimates that retail sales for recreational and medical marijuana combined will be between $3.5 billion and $4.3 billion in 2016. That would mean growth of 17%-26% over last year’s sales. Recreational marijuana will account for roughly $1.4 billion to $1.7 billion in sales in 2016, and MBD projects sales will climb to $2.6-$3.8 billion by 2018. While medical marijuana sales are expected to grow as well, it is only forecast to be in the range of $2.3-$4.0 billion by 2018. Convincing the country that cannabis posed such a danger to society and that only prohibition could save it was never going to be easy. Remember that, in the years before the peak reefer-madness era of the 1930s, marijuana was generally considered a benign, medically efficacious substance that was widely available in American pharmacies. However, the nation’s nascent drug warriors in the newly formed Federal Bureau of Narcotics, led by an enterprising propagandist named Harry Anslinger, were able to co-opt a number of sensational crimes and disingenuously tie them to cannabis. With the help of marijuana “experts” like Dr. James C. Munch, the FBN succeeded in creating an anti-cannabis campaign that left an indelible mark on the American psyche, ultimately resulting in pot’s prohibition. In reality, the crimes used in furtherance of Anslinger’s crusade often had little or nothing whatsoever to do with cannabis. These are the true crimes of reefer madness.
“After two puffs on a marijuana cigarette, I was turned into a bat.” Such was the testimony of Dr. James C. Munch, a marijuana “expert” who was called as a witness in two murder trials in 1938. Munch was a Temple University pharmacologist who’d ingratiate himself with Harry J. Anslinger and became his unconscionable henchman at the Federal Bureau of Narcotics—the predecessor of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Munch had experimented with the reefer himself, and he explained its allegedly psychosis-inducing effects at the trials of Ethel “Bunny” Sohl and Arthur Friedman. Both were on trial for murder, and both attempted to blame the devil’s weed for their deeds. “After the first cigarette, I felt as if I had wings,” Munch said of his experience. “I seemed to have great blue wings and I was flying around the world.” Source: The Crimes of Reefer Madness (hightimes.com)
NOTED: Marijuana can cause “cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome,” a condition characterized by “cyclic episodes of nausea and vomiting.”
Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a condition caused by long-term cannabis (marijuana) use. People who have CHS experience recurring episodes of nausea, vomiting, dehydration and abdominal pain, with frequent visits to the emergency department.
Hyperemesis means severe vomiting. Another name for CHS is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. Cannabinoids are compounds found in the cannabis plant that bind to cannabinoid receptors found in our brains, gastrointestinal tracts and immune cells. The most studied exogenous cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG).
CHS is more than just a side effect of marijuana. It is a condition that can lead to health complications if left untreated.
Who might get cannabis hyperemesis syndrome? People who use cannabis chronically are at risk of developing CHS. It tends to occur in people who use cannabis at least once a week and occurs more often in adults who have been using cannabis since their adolescent years. Typically, there is a delay of several years in the onset of symptoms preceded by chronic marijuana misuse in nearly all cases.
How common is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome? Only a small portion of people who regularly use cannabis develop CHS. Because CHS is a newly discovered condition, many people may have it and not report it or are misdiagnosed. One study found that up to 6% of people who visited the emergency room for vomiting had CHS.
SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES What causes cannabis hyperemesis syndrome? Experts don’t know exactly what causes cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. Some researchers suspect genetics may play a role. Others believe CHS may occur due to overstimulation of your endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors in your body that respond to compounds in cannabis.
What are the symptoms of CHS? The primary symptoms of CHS are intense and persistent nausea and vomiting. People with this condition vomit extensively, often without warning, and can vomit up to five times per hour. They may also experience diffuse abdominal pain, often report weight loss, and appear dehydrated. People with CHS self-learn to take hot showers, which helps reduce or curb some nausea they experience. Many people with CHS will compulsively shower or bathe — often for hours every day — to relieve cannabis hyperemesis syndrome symptoms. There are three phases of cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. Slightly different symptoms occur in each stage: Prodromal phase: This phase is most common in adults who have used cannabis since they were teenagers. You may have abdominal pain or morning nausea. You may also fear throwing up but never actually vomit. Hyperemetic phase: Usually lasting 24 to 48 hours, people in this phase have overwhelming, recurrent vomiting and nausea. You may start compulsively bathing, and avoid certain foods or purposefully restrict your food intake. Recovery phase: During recovery, people stop using cannabis (even in small amounts). When you are in the recovery phase, symptoms lessen over a few days or months. Eventually, they completely disappear. Estrogen increases cannabis sensitivity
Females more likely to see tolerance and addiction while males get the munchies Peer-Reviewed PublicationWASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY

PULLMAN, Wash. – Smoking today’s concentrated pot might be risky business for women, according to new research from Washington State University. The study is the first to demonstrate sex differences in the development of tolerance to THC. Psychology professor Rebecca Craft showed that, thanks to their estrogen levels, female rats are at least 30 percent more sensitive than males to the pain-relieving qualities of THC—the key active ingredient in cannabis. Females also develop tolerance to THC more quickly. These sensitivities could increase vulnerability to negative side effects like anxiety, paranoia and addiction.
The findings were recently published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. The research was supported by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Many unknownsCraft said other researchers, like Margaret Haney at the Columbia University Medical Center, have shown that women are more susceptible to cannabis abuse and dependence than men. Haney has documented a cannabis withdrawal syndrome of irritability, sleep disruption and decreased food intake that Craft said tends to be more severe in women. Women also have a greater tendency to relapse when trying to stop using the drug. Despite the known differences in how marijuana affects the sexes, Craft said most THC tolerance studies have been done on males. With recent legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington and Colorado—and many more states allowing medicinal use—Craft said there is greater burden on researchers to understand the effects of cannabis and ferret out differences between males and females.
She said the “munchie effect” appears to be the only THC reaction where males show more sensitivity than females. Studies in California found that THC stimulated the appetites of male animals more than those of females. Cannabis complexThe marijuana plant contains more than 60 compounds known as cannabinoids. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive ingredient behind the characteristic mental high. Cannabidiol and cannabinol occur in smaller amounts but may be useful for medical purposes. All three compounds are present in the most common species of marijuana, Cannabis sativa and C. indica, but in varying proportions.
Craft said most medical marijuana patients prefer a balance between the cannabinoids. But when it comes to recreational pot, selective breeding has resulted in THC concentrations double or triple those seen in the 1960s and 70s. “Marijuana is very different than it was 40 years ago,” she said. “It’s much higher in THC and lower in cannabidiol, so a little bit goes a very long way. “We’re more likely to see negative side effects today like anxiety, confusion, panic attacks, hallucinations or extreme paranoia,” she said. “And women are at higher risk.”
One of the few female studies Most clinical drug trials have been conducted on men due to their more stable hormonal profile. Despite the recommendation of the National Institutes of Health in 1993 to include more women in studies or give good reasons not to, many researchers still avoid dealing with the hormone swings inherent in a woman’s biology. But Craft has been studying drug sensitivities in females for years.
Working with rats in her laboratory, Craft said she and her team “routinely manipulate hormones and follow females across their cycles to see if their drug sensitivities change along with their hormones. And they do…very frequently.” Estrogen is the culprit. “What we’re finding with THC is that you get a very clear spike in drug sensitivity right when the females are ovulating – right when their estrogen levels have peaked and are coming down,” she said. Surprise finding In the current study, Craft and her team examined the pain relieving effects of THC in male and female rats. After 10 days of treatment, tolerance to THC was shown to be significantly greater in females than males. Tolerance occurs when the rat “adapts” to THC so that larger doses are required to produce the same pain-relieving effects initially seen with the first dose.Because Craft already knew that females were more sensitive to THC, she adjusted their doses to be 30 percent lower than doses for males. The females still developed more tolerance. “This is the lowest dose anyone has ever used to induce tolerance,” she said. The team also found that a low dose of THC did not disrupt the reproductive cycle in female rats, something that has been under debate and, Craft said, needs more study.
Medical marijuana Hoping to gain greater insights into marijuana’s medical potential, Craft and her team are also studying the effects of cannabidiol, which can counter some of THC’s negative side effects. The THC and cannabidiol studies will be extended to include chronic types of pain typically seen in people who request medical marijuana—such as those with debilitating back or joint pain, cancer, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, severe muscle spasms and more. “These people have pain that lasts for months or years,” Craft said. “Tolerance develops differently and sometimes you get a lot less tolerance to a drug when people are in chronic pain.” Craft uses a standard research formulation of delta-9-THC for her studies and is approved by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to work with Schedule I drugs such as cannabis. Estrogen levels may make some people more sensitive to THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. Female rats were at least 30% more sensitive to the properties of THC, including pain relief.
Can you be allergic to cannabis? The answer is yes.
You can develop an allergy to the pollen and other proteins in the marijuana plant just like you can to pollen from trees and grasses. Allergic reactions can occur not only from smoking marijuana, but also from oral ingestion and from contact with your skin. It’s estimated that up to 10% of people using marijuana may have an allergy to it. Symptoms associated with marijuana allergy are the typical ones that we see with other allergies: sneezing, nasal and eye itching, nasal congestion and runny nose. Lung problems like wheezing can be seen, too. Handling marijuana can produce itching, hives and other skin rashes in people who have a sensitivity.
When you eat a product that contains marijuana, there can be gastrointestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea. In very rare cases, a severe life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis can occur. Several foods, such as bananas, almonds, tomatoes, peaches and citrus fruits, have cross-reacting allergens with marijuana. This means that people with marijuana allergy may see an allergic reaction called oral allergy syndrome when eating these foods. Use of cannabidiol, or CBD, oil is very popular. CBD oil does not contain the substances that cause the euphoric effects seen with marijuana use. And while it’s thought to be helpful in many medical conditions, there is little scientific proof at this time. But CBD oil can trigger allergic reactions in people with marijuana allergy, as it may contain the allergens from the marijuana plant.
Marijuana may have some therapeutic benefits for sick pets.
But Dogs and cats can also die from marijuana toxicosis. The number of cases of marijuana intoxication in dogs has risen dramatically in recent decades. Fortunately, it’s rarely fatal, but it can bring about some worrying symptoms, and you should always seek veterinary advice if you suspect your dog has ingested this drug.
Why Has There Been Such a Drastic Rise in Reported Cases? In 1996, California became the first state to legalize cannabis use for medicinal purposes. Marijuana is now only prohibited in a few states, and an increasing number also allow its use for recreational purposes. As a result of the drug’s increased accessibility, there has been a significant increase in the reports of dogs suffering from marijuana toxicosis. The Animal Poison Control Center, for example, reported a staggering 765% increase in calls about pets ingesting marijuana in 2019, compared with the same period the previous year. The Pet Poison Helpline also saw an increase of more than 400% in the number of calls they took about marijuana-related incidents over a six-year period. The increase in reported cases even prompted a retrospective clinical study that evaluated the trends of marijuana toxicosis in dogs living in a state with legalized medical marijuana usage between 2005 and 2010. There was a concerning four-fold increase in the number of cases reported to the two Colorado veterinary hospitals that were the focus of the study.
Marijuana Toxicity Exposure There has been a much higher incidence of dogs suffering from marijuana toxicosis than those of cats. This is because users often mix the drug into palatable baked goods, which is a particular problem if a dog is a renowned counter surfer. However, your dog can also suffer poisoning from eating any part of the actual plant (including the leaves, seeds, stems, and flowers), from smoke inhalation, consuming hashish oil, or even from eating the feces of an individual that has ingested cannabis.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the potent psychoactive substance in marijuana, and dogs have a much more severe reaction to this than humans. Symptoms are typically visible within 30 minutes to an hour after ingestion of the drug, or sooner if inhaled. Dr. Stacy Meola is a criticalist at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Colorado and was also one of the lead veterinarians involved in the previously-mentioned study. She explains that “the most common sign is stumbling and crossing over their feet, and walking like they are drunk (ataxic).”
In the study, 88% of the dogs presented with this symptom. Around 50% of dogs will also likely appear dull and lethargic with dilated pupils, and will flinch in reaction to fast movements toward their face. “The most interesting sign in dogs is urinary incontinence,” says Dr. Meola, adding that around half of the dogs studied dribbled urine uncontrollably when they had marijuana in their system. “My guess is the drug would not be as popular if 50% of people dribbled urine when they used marijuana!” Other possible symptoms include vomiting, tremors & shaking, and agitation, and some dogs can become comatose.
Close confines spaces help the virus to spread, @ Diamond Princess
What the cruise-ship outbreaks reveal about COVID-19 – Search (bing.com) but closed environments are also an ideal place to study how the past coronavirus behaves. When COVID-19 was detected among passengers on the cruise ship Diamond Princess, the vessel offered a rarest opportunity to understand features of the new coronavirus that are hard to investigate in the wider population. Some of the first studies from the ship — where some 712 people were infected — out of the 3711 passengers onboard. 14 passengers had died. Having revealed how easily the virus spreads, provided estimates of the disease’s severity and allowed researchers to investigate the share of infections with no symptoms. United States population back in January 2020 was around 330 million, therefore, the death rate would have been approximately 1 million people if there would had been no vaccine at all (but remember these estimates are from a cruise ship within tight living conditions? COVID-19 pandemic on cruise ships From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Part of a series on the COVID-19 pandemic
Parts of this article (those related to crew strandings, case numbers) need to be updated. Please help update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. (March 2021) Early in 2020, in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the disease spread to a number of cruise ships, with the nature of such ships – including crowded semi-enclosed areas, increased exposure to new environments, limited medical resources – contributing to the heightened risk and rapid spread of the disease.[1]
The British-registered Diamond Princess was the first cruise ship to have a major outbreak on board, with the ship quarantined at Yokohama from 4 February 2020 for about a month. Of 3711 passengers and crew, around 700 people became infected and 9 people died.[2][3] Governments and ports responded by preventing many cruise ships from docking and advising people to avoid travelling on cruise ships. Many cruise lines suspended their operations to mitigate the spread of the pandemic. By June 2020, over 40 cruise ships had had confirmed positive cases of coronavirus on board. The last cruise ship with passengers aboard during the first wave of the pandemic, Artania, docked at its home port with its last eight passengers on 8 June 2020.[a][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][excessive citations] In addition, over 40,000 crew members still remained on cruise ships, some in isolation, in mid-June 2020.[12] Many could not be repatriated because cruise lines refused to cover the cost,[13][14] and because countries had different and changing rules. The condition was stressful to many of those stranded;[15] multiple suicides were reported.[16] Domestic UK cruises, confined to ports of call in the British Isles, began to resume in May 2021.[17] United States cruises restarted back in June 2021.[18]
Cruise ship incidents with confirmed positive cases on board
World Dream: Summary of confirmed cases on board The cruise ship World Dream (registered in the Bahamas, operated by Dream Cruises) was on a journey from Nansha Port, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, to Nha Trang and Da Nang in Vietnam during 19–24 January 2020 with 6,903 persons on board including 108 from Hubei, in which 28 were from Wuhan.[172] On 24 January 2020, the ship returned to Nansha Port. Port customs performed a temperature check for all disembarking passengers and crew, with 31 people sampled and tested for the virus, including those who had fever during the cruise and those who were in close contact with confirmed cases before they boarded for the cruise. All the test results were negative though some of them were later confirmed to be infected.[173] Between 24 January 2020 and 2 February 2020, the ship made three additional cruises out of Guangzhou or Hong Kong, including two “cruises to nowhere” and one to the Philippines, although passengers from the journey were not disembarked at Manila due to local resident protests over fear on the virus.[174]
Confirmed cases. On 2 February 2020, the ship departed from Hong Kong for Taiwan with around 3,800 persons on board. On the same night, the cruise company was notified that there were confirmed cases from the ship’s former passengers. On the next day, the Guangdong government officially announced that three former passengers from the Vietnam journey had been confirmed infected by the novel coronavirus after they disembarked. Former passengers from the cruise in China were told to contact local health authority and observer quarantine.[175] As of 11 February 2020, 12 cases associated with the cruise were confirmed, including 1 ground worker who had temporarily worked on the ship, and 4 relatives of passengers.[20]
Quarantine and preventive actions After the Guangdong government official announcement of confirmed cases among former passengers, on 4 February 2020, Taiwan blocked the ship’s port of call in Kaohsiung due to concern on the virus. On 5 February 2020, World Dream returned to Hong Kong and all 3,800 passengers and crew on board the ship at the time were put under quarantine at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal.[176] The quarantine was lifted on 9 February 2020 after all 1,800 crew members tested negative for the virus. The majority of the passengers were not tested as they had had no contact with the infected Chinese passengers who had been on the ship during 19–24 January.[177]
Evacuation of crew members After all passengers were disembarked, World Dream cruised to Malaysia. The crew were not allowed to leave the ship in several countries, after one passenger who had disembarked tested positive for COVID-19. The ship finally anchored near Bintan Island, Indonesia.[178] The evacuation of 188 Indonesia crew members from the cruise ship was performed by an Indonesian naval hospital ship and all tested negative for COVID-19.[179] On 28 February 2020 they were quarantined for 14 days on the uninhabited Sebaru Kecil Islet, Thousand Islands, Jakarta.[180][181]
Diamond Princess: Summary of confirmed cases on board Main article: COVID-19 pandemic on Diamond Princess On 4 February 2020, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that Diamond Princess,[bt] which had docked at Yokohama[bu] the previous day,[bv] was quarantined at sea with 10 positive cases on board.[183] Diamond Princess had originally departed from Yokohama on 20 January 2020 for a roundtrip cruise.[bz][182][184] On 20 February 2020, the World Health Organization stated that the ship accounted for more than half of the reported infections around the world outside of China.[185] Westerdam Westerdam on 24 November 2015 In February 2020, the Holland America Line ship MS Westerdam, departing after a stop in Hong Kong on 1 February, was not allowed to call in the Philippines, Japan, and Guam over concerns regarding coronavirus infections.[186][187] After initially receiving approval on 10 February to let the passengers disembark in Thailand, as the ship was heading to Laem Chabang port near Bangkok, permission to dock was refused the next day. However, the ship was still maintaining its course to Bangkok and at around 10:30 am CET on 11 February, Westerdam sailed around the southern tip of Vietnam.[188][189][190]
According to Flip Knibbe, a Dutch passenger on the ship, all the passengers had their temperatures checked a second time. Speaking to NOS on 11 February, Knibbe said “Dit schip is virusvrij“: ‘This ship is virus-free’. Unlike Diamond Princess, those on board were not in quarantine. Everyone could move freely, shops and restaurants were open and the entertainment programme continued.[190] After Westerdam was refused at several points of call, on 13 February, the ship was allowed to dock in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.[191] At this point, only the 20 passengers who reported feeling ill were tested, and all of them tested negative.[192][193]
On 15 February, Malaysia reported that an 83-year-old US citizen who disembarked from Westerdam and flew into Malaysia on 14 February had tested positive for SARS- CoV-2.[194][195][196] In a second test, requested by both the Holland America Line and Cambodian authorities the woman tested positive again.[197][192][193][195][198] Despite findings, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen visited the ship, discouraged use of masks, and encouraged the passengers to tour the city, sparking concerns that another spoke was being added to the contagion network.[199]Westerdam passengers were later denied entry to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and other countries.[200]
On 22 February, after treatment with antiviral medications that were speculated to have an effect against COVID-19, the woman’s medical condition improved and she was tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initially stated that the woman had never been infected by SARS-CoV-2, but withdrew the claim, clarifying that the CDC “[has] no visibility on whether the initial test of the woman was anything other than positive”.[201] Due to possible background politics, it is uncertain whether these results were a false negative,[202] or whether the passenger cleared the virus from her system after 72 hours of intensive treatment.[203] SOURCES: COVID-19 pandemic on cruise ships – Wikipedia
Cost of charging electric car – Search (bing.com) It’s easy to figure out how much it costs to charge an electric car with information from the EPA, your electric company or the company operating a public charging company. In most cases, it’s cheaper than a similar gas-powered vehicle.
When shoppers are considering the purchase or lease of an electric vehicle (EV), one of the first questions they ask is, “How much does it cost to charge?” For a gas-powered car, you only have to look at its fuel economy and your gas station receipt. However, there are a couple of ways to answer that question for an EV, since there are a couple of ways to charge up. If you’re charging from a home charging station, the cost of charging an electric vehicle is based on the vehicle’s energy efficiency and the cost of electricity, which can vary greatly depending on where you’re charging. In most cases, charging an EVs at home is dramatically less expensive than fueling a gasoline or diesel vehicle. When you’re charging your electric car from a public charging station, you’ll pay either by the cost of electricity or the amount of time you spend tethered to the station. In some cases, you won’t pay for the charge at all. Fortunately, there’s ample information to help you determine the cost to charge almost any electric vehicle available in the marketplace, and the math involved is pretty simple.
Charging at Home For most EV buyers or lessees, charging your electric vehicle at home is the most convenient and lowest-cost option for daily charging. You simply plug your car into a Level 1 three-prong 120-volt household outlet, a 240-volt outlet (similar to what your clothes dryer uses) or a Level 2 electric car charging station that’s been installed. Cost-wise, there’s little difference in the daily price of electricity between the two charging levels, though a Level 2 EV charging station is typically the fastest and most convenient option.
Figuring Out the Cost To determine the cost of charging an electric car, you simply multiply the cost of electricity in your area by the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Once you know the cost per 100 miles, you can use your vehicle’s EPA-estimated range to determine the cost of refilling it from zero percent to 100 percent charge. You don’t need to know the car’s battery capacity or do anything — beyond some simple math to find the total cost. Let’s look at exactly where to find the numbers that need to be crunched.
Electric Car Efficiency The EPA has developed a way to compare the efficiency of gasoline and electric vehicles called MPGe. That’s not the number we’ll use for calculating the cost to charge, though. On an electric vehicle’s window sticker, you’ll see a number labeled kW-hrs per 100 miles or kWh per 100 miles. The same information for both EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) is also available at the EPA’s fueleconomy.gov site. We used the EPA’s site to look at a couple of electric cars on the market today to show how different their fuel efficiency can be. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt consumes 28 kWh per 100 miles, while the 2023 Volkswagen iD.4 can use 34 kWh of electricity to cover the same distance. A 2023 Kia EV6 with all-wheel drive can use 31 kWh of electricity to go 100 miles.
Cost of Electricity There are a couple of ways to determine the cost of electricity in your area. You can get a ballpark idea by looking at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration’s state-by-state energy cost guide. When exploring the table, you’ll see the wide range of costs across the country, from North Dakota’s 9.62 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in December 2022 to Hawaii’s 44.78 cents per kWh. The national average in December 2022 was 14.96 cents per kWh. Because costs can vary within states, among different power providers, seasonally, and based on the rate plan you choose from your power provider, it’s a good idea to do a little math to determine your personal cost of power.
To do so, look at your monthly electric bill to find out how many kilowatt-hours of electricity your home consumed. Then divide your total bill by that number to determine the cost per kWh. You can get an even more accurate cost per kWh if you average the kWh costs over several months, or by using bills from all four seasons.
How Do You Find the Full-Range Cost? Now that you know the cost you’re going to pay per kWh and how many kWh the EV will take to travel 100 miles, you just multiply the two. For example, charging the 28 kWh-per-100-mile 2023 Chevrolet Bolt in Colorado, where the average cost per kWh is 14.24 cents, will cost $3.99 to power for 100 miles, or about 4 cents per mile.
The 2023 Chevy Bolt is EPA-rated to go 259 miles on a full charge. At 4 cents per mile, the total cost to charge the Bolt from zero percent to 100 percent charge would be $10.36 at Colorado’s average electric rate. The same Bolt would cost $17.73 to charge from empty to full in California, where the average electricity cost is 24.46 cents per kWh.
How Can You Reduce Your Cost of Electric Car Charging? You can reduce the cost of charging EVs by charging them at the right time. In many areas, electric utilities offer time-of-use electric rates, with higher costs at peak hours and low costs when energy demand is at its lowest. If your utility offers the program, and you schedule your EV to charge late at night, you can save a tremendous amount in energy costs.
How Much Does a Charging Station Cost? While having a Level 2 charging station installed in your home isn’t absolutely necessary, having one makes the EV ownership experience much easier. Installing one usually improves charging speeds and, with some charging stations, allows monitoring and scheduling using a smartphone app. Note that we call them charging stations. Electric cars actually carry their Level 1 (120-volt) and Level 2 (240-volt) chargers internally. The charging station, or electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), just connects your home’s power to the car’s internal charger through its charging port. As electric vehicle battery packs evolve, charging with a Level 1 120-volt household outlet is becoming less and less of a viable option, as they can take 40-50 hours to charge these higher-range vehicles from empty.
Depending on what charging station you choose, how far it’s going to be installed from your electrical panel, the cost of permits and whether you already have a 240-volt outlet you can plug into, the cost of installation will vary. According to EV advocacy organization Forth, the cost of installing a charging station can cost $300 to $1,000, plus the cost of an electrician’s labor. If you’re in an older home where the electric panel or service can’t accommodate the additional load, or your EVSE needs to be installed far from the panel, the installation costs can skyrocket. Fortunately, the cost of charging equipment can be partially reduced with federal, state, local and utility incentives.
Charging on the Road While home charging is how most EV owners will replenish their EV’s battery, it’s not always possible. When you’re out on the road, you need to take advantage of Level 2 public charging stations and Level 3 DC fast chargers to refuel your EV. If you live in a multi unit housing complex with no place to install your own charging station, public charging may be your only option. While nearly all electric vehicles (including Teslas with an adapter) can be charged from Level 2 public chargers, there are three types of fast-charging plugs used in America. CHAdeMO was an early standard, but it’s now going out of favor. SAE Combo is a newer standard and works with a broad range of electric cars.
The Tesla Supercharger network uses proprietary chargers that can only, for now, be used to charge Tesla vehicles. Using adapters, Tesla’s can be charged using any of the three types of plugs. Determining the cost of charging an electric car at a public charging station can get complicated. There are a multitude of different charging networks with also different pricing structures. EV chargers can bill by the length of time you’re connected or based on the amount of energy transferred. Some, including Tesla’s proprietary Supercharger network, can charge different rates based on the speed of charging. At some EV chargers, you’ll be charged a per-session fee or the cost of parking.
Let’s look at a couple of networks to illustrate the different pricing models. In Washington, D.C., the Electrify America network charges 48 cents per kWh to charge at one of their fast chargers. Members who pay a $4 monthly fee get a discounted rate of 36 cents per kWh. If we were to charge a 2023 Chevy Bolt, which takes 28 kWh to travel 100 miles, it would cost $34.81 to get a full battery at Electrify America’s standard rate. Spending one full hour at an Electrify America fast charger would cost $28.80. The EVgo network has a 35-cent per-minute non-member pay-as-you-go rate for their fast-charging network in Washington, D.C. Even if you were on the DC fast-charging station for a full hour, it would only cost $21 for the session. Members receive discounts of up to 30 percent based on the plan they choose. It’s difficult to predict exactly how long any electric vehicle would take to charge, as charging speed can vary dramatically based on temperature, battery’s state of charge, speed of the charger and speed at which the car is able to take the charge.
Where to Find Free Charging You can reduce your cost of charging to zero if you’re able to take advantage of free charging. Some electric car makers offer free charging to their buyers and lease customers, though the amount of time you get varies dramatically. Volkswagen offers one of the best deals, with the ability to plug in the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 for free at Electrify America chargers for 30-minute fast-charging sessions for three years. Tesla goes back and forth with free access to its Supercharger network, occasionally offering drivers the ability to plug in at no cost. Many shopping centers offer Level 2 charging as a free benefit while shopping. While most shoppers don’t spend enough time with their car on the charger to fill up the battery completely, you can get at least a few miles of additional range. In some cases, the charging stations are placed close to the front door, providing another incentive to drive a plug-in vehicle. The PlugShare app is an excellent way to find charging stations, their status and their cost.
Workplace Charging Some employers offer the ability to recharge your plug-in car while you work. Employers receive incentives to provide the benefit, which can save EV drivers the cost of charging at home or other public stations. Workplace chargers are typically Level 2 charging stations, as the installation costs of a Level 3 rapid charger are typically too high for employers to pay. A Level 2 charger is fast enough to recharge almost any EV in the span of a normal workday. It’s important that you don’t assume that any outlet you find in your employer’s parking lot is available to charge your car. Always ask permission, as you don’t know what other loads the circuit could already be powering & you don’t want to risk overloading it.
Comparing the Cost of Electricity Versus Gas When you know how much it costs to power your electric vehicle, you can compare it with the cost of fueling a car with an internal combustion engine.
Comparing Home Charging Prices to Buying Gas We’ll use a few compact cars and the December 2022 national average kWh rate of 14.96 cents for this example. The 2023 Hyundai Kona EV consumes 27 kWh of electricity per 100 miles, according to the EPA. Multiply it out and that’s $4.03 in electricity to propel the car for 100 miles. We can compare apples to apples by looking at the gas-powered 2023 Hyundai Kona. The EPA’s gas mileage information page shows that the front-wheel drive Kona with a 1.6-liter turbo engine consumes 3.1 gallons of gasoline per 100 miles. At the current average price of unleaded gasoline reported by the AAA, $3.47 per gallon, it would cost $10.76 to drive the gasoline-powered Kona 100 miles. Finally, let’s compare the cost of the electric Kona with the 2023 Toyota Prius hybrid, which is one of the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered cars you can buy. According to the EPA, the standard Prius consumes 1.8 gallons per 100 miles. At the national average gasoline price, it would cost $6.25 per 100 miles to drive the Toyota Prius.
Comparing Fast-Charging Prices to Buying Gas – Search (bing.com) Now let’s look at the cost of recharging your electric car at a public fast-charging station compared to visiting a gas station with a traditional vehicle. We’ll say you’re in Washington, D.C. and charging your Hyundai Kona EV using a fast-charging port at an Electrify America charging station. An Electrify America non-member would pay 48 cents per kWh for electricity, which works out to $12.95 to power the Kona EV for 100 miles. At the District of Columbia’s current unleaded fuel price of $3.51 per gallon, it would cost $10.88 to drive the gas-only Kona 100 miles, and $6.32 to fuel the Prius for the same distance. In other words, an electric car charged at a typical fast charger could cost more than twice what a Prius’ gasoline would cost in this scenario. Your chances of saving money with an EV come from home, workplace or free charging. Fast charging, while necessary for long road trips, can be an expensive endeavor. On the other hand, gasoline prices tend to be much more volatile than electricity prices, making your cost of ownership less predictable.
The Bigger Picture While it’s clear that in most areas of the country it’s cheaper to charge an electric car at a home, workplace or free charging station than it is to fuel a gas-powered car, the overall picture is a bit more complicated. That’s because electric cars and SUVs currently cost significantly more than equivalent gasoline-powered vehicles. Some, but usually not all, of the price difference can be offset by the Federal Electric Car Tax Credit, plus state, local and utility incentives. In some states, registering an electric car is more expensive than registering a gas-powered vehicle.
Before you buy or lease, you need to consider whether the amount you drive will allow you to recover the vehicle’s higher initial cost.

About the film: DETERMINED features a personal look into Alzheimer’s disease research. The independent documentary follows three WRAP volunteer participants as they take part in research to help understand Alzheimer’s disease, illustrates the difficulties families face after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, and highlights the work of WRAP research. The film features interviews with scientists from UW Alzheimer’s disease research programs. The film follows the journeys of three human research subjects who have put themselves throughout the rigor of a medical study. The test group also shares one of life’s most difficult trials – a parent’s decline from Alzheimer’s disease. As the researchers compile data from 1,500 participants over the period of the study, a narrative begins to emerge. One of the film producer’s, Therese Barry-Tanner, has been a participant in the WRAP study for more than fifteen years. Barry-Tanner served as a caregiver to her mother as she battled Alzheimer’s disease.
The documentary began as Therese’s idea in 2011, and she said she hopes DETERMINED will bring the audience through the difficult decisions faced when a loved one lives with or dies from Alzheimer’s disease. She also hopes the film will share the experience of being a research volunteer participant, and offer an inside look at the people who are working to find a cure. After losing their mothers to Alzheimer’s disease, three Wisconsin women — determined to find a cure — volunteer their bodies and minds to a groundbreaking study taking place right here at UW Madison. Hailing from Milwaukee, Madison, and Spooner Wisconsin, respectively, Karen, Sigrid, and Barb face strenuous cognitive exams, exercise tests, and neural scans as part of the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention (WRAP).
This clear-eyed documentary secures access not only to the high-stakes inner workings of medical research, but also to the intimate personal lives of the participants and their families. Determined examines, in heartbreaking detail, the toll of Alzheimer’s, particularly on the inner lives of caregivers. It also introduces us to three brave women and a team of doctors who, together, give us hope for a brighter future.
On this podcast, 29. Determined by Cinematalk (soundcloud.com) We welcome a lively panel of five women who together have spent the past seven years, determined to tell the story of Determined. Producers Therese Barry-Tanner, and Eileen Littig, Director Melissa Godoy, Sound person Shawndra Jones, and one of the stars of the film, Karen McElwee all sat down to talk with Ben Reiser via Zoom for an engaging and informative discussion about the making of this remarkable film.
DETERMINED is about the quest for a cure to Alzheimer’s disease. As told by human research subjects in a long-term medical research study. The documentary intimately shows what happens when human test subjects – who are at high risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease – offer their blood, brains, and hearts to conquer it.
Currently, one in nine older adults has Alzheimer’s disease. But the population is aging rapidly, by 2025 the number of Americans aged 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase by 40 percent – to 7.1 million. Alzheimer’s disease is not normal aging, but rather a fatal disease with no known cure. Since 2001, medical research scientists at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute at the University of Wisconsin have been on a mission to figure out how to prevent, and eventually cure, Alzheimer’s disease. The Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention (WRAP) tracks the characteristics and habits of people at high risk for the disease and observes them in biological detail as they age. Some go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease and some do not.
Two breakthroughs on dementia — one that’s useful right now Opinion by Brett Arends
Six million among us have full-blown Alzheimer’s disease, including 10% of those over 65 and half of everyone over 80. And many more have other types of dementia, or cognitive impairment typically associated with age. Actor Bruce Willis, a mere 68 years young, is the latest heartbreaking example in the public eye. So, when it comes to dementia and the aging brain, any news is good news. And last week we had not one but two hopeful news items. One that’s useful to us right now, and the other that suggests something potentially very big down the road.
Let’s start with the one useful here and now. Some fascinating new research out of the University of California Riverside suggests we really can make our aging brain younger again, and lower the number of those senior moments, at later ages than previously realized. Remember how quick your brain was when you were young? Like most people, I’ve just assumed that was because my brain was neurologically new back then and presumably more agile. And there’s something to that. But some scientists have been theorizing that it’s also because of the school environment. Back then we are stuck in a classroom all day every day, concurrently learning multiple different skills from composition to trigonometry. We have teachers, and we are in a social environment with other children learning the same stuff at the same time. Some scientists have wondered if we could make our minds more agile again, even at more advanced ages, if we tried to replicate some of that environment.
So that’s what the researchers did at UC Riverside. And it worked. In two separate studies, seniors spent 7 hours a week learning three different skills over 3 to 3 ½ months. The participants had average ages of 66 in the first study and 69 in the second. The skills included Spanish language, photography, drawing, music composition, and operating an iPad. They spent two hours per week on each, along with a one-hour discussion each week on one of the subjects. Critically, for each participant these were new skills. Nobody was relearning something they already knew.
Overall, the time and commitment for those 12 or 15 weeks “was similar to a full undergraduate course load,” the researchers report. “Our intervention included novel skill learning, motivational lectures, and peer social support, as we originally intended to closely mimic rich, encouraging learning environments provided to children, adolescents and young adults.” Here’s the payoff: Participants in the study showed dramatic improvements—and not simply in the three new skills they’d learned. They also showed “significant increases” in mental skills across a battery of tests designed to measure the broad set of cognitive abilities, the researchers report.
That includes tests of both thinking skills and memory. And these improvements weren’t just temporary. While participants in the studies showed cognitive gains during the program and at the end of it, they also showed further gains for up to a full year afterward. “Older adults continued to increase their cognitive abilities even after one year from the end of the intervention,” the researchers report. “The present study revealed significant improvements up to a year following the end of the learning intervention.” The findings indicate “that a multi-skill learning intervention has the potential to induce long-lasting cognitive improvements in older adults.”
Wow.
One caveat is that the two studies were small: six people in one, 27 in another. Another is that the groups of participants were not ethnically diverse. We’ll have to see if other, broader studies replicate the findings. But the studies suggest that signing up for programs at your local adult education center won’t just teach you Spanish, or oil painting, or Thai cooking and get you out of the house. They also rejuvenate your brain long term.
Meanwhile, there was some other hopeful news on dementia. Scientists have long known that people who end up developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia are more likely to experience sleep problems in the years before the disease becomes apparent.
A sleeping pill already available could help. A small number of patients who took the pill Suvorexant, which is made by Merck and marketed under the brand name Belsomra, saw sharp and immediate reductions in the two key biological markers of Alzheimer’s. Those markers are the “amyloid-beta” and “tau” proteins that show up in the brains of people with dementia. The research involved 38 people aged 45 to 65. Some were given a higher, 20 milligram doses of the sleep aid before going to sleep. Others were given 10 milligrams. Others were given a placebo.
The researchers then took a spinal tap every two hours to analyze their cerebrospinal fluid. “In the cerebrospinal fluid of people who had received the high dose of suvorexant, amyloid levels dropped 10% to 20% and levels of a key form of tau known as hyperphosphorylated tau dropped 10% to 15%, compared with people who had received placebo,” the researchers report. They repeated the test over a second night, with the same result. What does it mean? Maybe nothing. Maybe an enormous amount. “This is a small, proof-of-concept study,” warned the study’s senior author, Brendan Lucey, a Washington University neurology professor and the director of the sleep medicine center, in a statement. “It would be premature for people who are worried about developing Alzheimer’s to interpret it as a reason to start taking suvorexant every night.” That said, he said these results were “very encouraging. This drug is already available and proven safe, and now we have evidence that it affects the levels of proteins that are critical for driving Alzheimer’s disease.” There are many potential breakthroughs on Alzheimer’s, and so far none of them has panned out. There is currently no cure and very little we can do to slow the disease, let alone stop it. A new drug which can slow the progression early on is expensive, and currently isn’t covered by Medicare.
FDA Approves Insomnia Drug, Suvorexant, for Alzheimer’s Patients By Lecia Bushak | February 5th, 2020
Whether it’s sleeping too much or experiencing fragmented sleep, people with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia may often experience disruptions in their circadian rhythms. Now, a new insomnia drug is available for Alzheimer’s patients to help smooth out sleep difficulties. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Belsomra, an insomnia drug developed by Merck, for use among Alzheimer’s patients, the company announced this week. Belsomra is also known by its generic name, suvorexant.
In a study published this month in Alzheimers & Dementia, researchers investigated suvorexant’s potential in treating insomnia among patients who had mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The study focused on 285 participants and found that suvorexant improved their total sleep time, or TST.
Given the latest findings, the FDA approved an updated label on Belsomra to include treatment for Alzheimer’s-related insomnia. “Alzheimer’s disease is often accompanied by disruptions to an individual’s sleep-wake patterns and overall difficulty sleeping,” Dr. Joseph Herring, associate vice president of Global Clinical Research, Neuroscience at Merck Research Laboratories, said in the company’s news release.
“We’re pleased that the prescribing information for BELSOMRA now includes findings from Merck’s first dedicated study of an insomnia medication in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease,” Herring continued. Sleep and dementia have long intertwined. Whether it’s chronic sleep deprivation contributing to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, or facing sleep problems once a person is already diagnosed, researchers have examined the two in tandem. It’s well-established that sleep deprivation can not only lead to a higher risk of chronic diseases like heart disease or obesity–but it can also take a heavy toll on the brain. One recent study measured the effect of losing even just one night of sleep on the brain, and found pulling an all-nighter was enough to trigger the increase of a biomarker associated with Alzheimer’s in people’s blood.
Other researchers have cited that poor sleep and limited deep sleep is associated with a 40 percent decline in memory performance. In a past interview with Being Patient, sleep scientist Dr. Daniel Gartenberg discussed how crucial deep sleep is in clearing the brain of harmful elements. “Sleep cleans out a lot of the bad plaques that build up during the day,” Gartenberg said. “Also, there are things [sleep affects] that you might not even think about. For example, you’re more sensitive to pain when you’re sleep deprived.”
“Deep sleep is thought to be the more regenerative aspect of sleep that’s associated with human growth hormones and memory abilities,” he added. And once someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, sleep issues may exacerbate behavioral, emotional and cognitive issues already at play. It makes sense, then, that patients and caregivers would turn to sleep aids and insomnia medications to help lighten the load. However, it’s important to discuss with your doctor first, as an increase in certain types of medications–including antidepressants, antipsychotics or insomnia drugs–could have varying effects on patients. In Small Study, Hints That a Sleeping Pill Might Help Prevent Alzheimer’s HealthDay | April 21, 2023, at 6:45 a.m. By Cara Murez HealthDay Reporter
FRIDAY, April 21, 2023 (HealthDay News) – (HEALTHDAY)
Taking a particular sleep medication may help stave off Alzheimer’s disease, but it’s too soon to say for sure after a preliminary study. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that participants who took a sleeping pill called suvorexant before bed had a drop in levels of key Alzheimer’s disease proteins.
“This is a small, proof-of-concept study. It would be premature for people who are worried about developing Alzheimer’s to interpret it as a reason to start taking suvorexant every night,” said senior study author Dr. Brendan Lucey, an associate professor of neurology and director of Washington University’s Sleep Medicine Center.
“We don’t yet know whether long-term use is effective in staving off cognitive decline, and if it is, at what dose and for whom,” he added in a university news release. “Still, these results are very encouraging. This drug is already available and proven safe, and now we have evidence that it affects the levels of proteins that are critical for driving Alzheimer’s disease.”
Suvorexant (Belsomra), a dual orexin receptor antagonist, is one of three in this class of drugs that are already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for insomnia. Orexin is a natural biomolecule that promotes wakefulness. When it is blocked, people fall asleep, according to the study. In Alzheimer’s disease, plaques of the protein amyloid beta build up in the brain. Years after amyloid begins accumulating, another brain protein called tau, starts forming tangles that are toxic to neurons. As those tangles become detectable, people with Alzheimer’s disease start experiencing memory loss.
In past research, Lucey and his colleagues have linked poor sleep to higher levels of both amyloid and tau in the brain. What they don’t know is whether good sleep would reduce those levels, and with that halt or reverse progress of Alzheimer’s disease. Mouse studies with orexin inhibitors have been promising. For this study, researchers recruited 38 people between the ages of 45 and 65 who had no mental impairments. Researchers gave 13 of them a lower dose — 10 milligrams (mg) — of suvorexant. Twelve others received a 20 mg dose, while 13 participants received a placebo.
The doses were each given at 9 p.m. Researchers withdrew a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid from participants via spinal tap every two hours for 36 hours. This began an hour before the sleeping aid or placebo was administered. The purpose was to measure how amyloid and tau levels changed over the next day and a half. Amyloid levels dropped 10% to 20% in the cerebrospinal fluid of people who had received the high dose of suvorexant compared to those who received a placebo. Levels of a key form of tau known as hyperphosphorylated tau dropped 10% to 15%, researchers found.
These differences are considered statistically significant. No significant difference was found between the people who received a low dose of suvorexant and those who received the placebo. Investigators administered another dose of suvorexant on the second night. Levels of both proteins again dropped in the high-dose group. “If we can lower amyloid every day, we think the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain will decrease over time,” Lucey said. “And hyperphosphorylated tau is very important in the development of Alzheimer’s disease, because it’s associated with forming tau tangles that kill neurons. If you can reduce tau phosphorylation, potentially there would be less tangle formation and less neuronal death.”
The findings were published April 20 in Annals of Neurology. Lucey cautioned that the study is preliminary. Ongoing studies aim to assess the longer-term effects of orexin inhibitors in people who are at higher risk of dementia. “Future studies need to have people taking these drugs for months, at least, and measuring the effect on amyloid and tau over time,” Lucey said. “We’re also going to be studying participants who are older and may still be cognitively healthy, but who already have some amyloid plaques in their brains.”
He noted that this study involved healthy middle-aged participants. Results may be different in older participants. “I’m hopeful that we will eventually develop drugs that take advantage of the link between sleep and Alzheimer’s to prevent cognitive decline,” Lacey said. “We’re not quite there yet. At this point, the best advice I can give is to get a good night’s sleep if you can, and if you can’t, to see a sleep specialist and get your sleep problems treated.” But if it turns out that the right sleep aids can make a difference—that would be huge. Stay tuned. In Alzheimer’s study, sleeping pills are shown to reduce signs of disease in the brain (msn.com)
Scientists Discover Way To Reverse Alzheimer’s Scientists at MIT have made a breakthrough in the fight to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers were successfully able to interfere with an enzyme typically found to be overactive in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The hyperactive enzyme, CDK5, was treated with an unnamed peptide. Early tests conducted on mice have had promising results.
“This peptide has the ability to enter the brain, and in a couple of different models, the peptide shows protective effects against loss of neurons and also appear to be able to rescue some of the behavior deficits,” said Study Author Li-Huei Tsai, Director of MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory. The hope is that with further testing, this particular peptide might be a treatment for dementia in humans. Further research into such peptide inhibitors could lead to treatments for other neurodegenerative illnesses. For scientist Michal Schwartz, Israel Prize is rewarding milestone in ongoing journey.
