A compelling new documentary was released today that scrutinizes the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac. It is a must-
watch for anyone concerned about keeping oil out of the Great Lakes.

Motherboard correspondent Spencer Chumbley went to Michigan to investigate the two degrading oil pipelines, and the research is alarming. If just one of the pipelines ruptured, it would result in a spill of 1.5 million gallons of oil. University of Michigan research scientist Dave Schwab says, “I can’t imagine another place in the Great Lakes where it’d be more devastating to have an oil spill.”
At more than 64 years old, this pipeline is way past its expiration date.

Every day, nearly 23 million gallons of oil flow through two aging pipelines in the heart of the Great Lakes known as Line 5. Not only does Line 5 put the Great Lakes at enormous risk from an oil spill, the oil carried by this pipeline once refined and burned creates a huge carbon spill into the atmosphere.

Enbridge, a Canadian-based oil transport giant that owns and operates Line 5, is now attempting to replace the pipeline with an oil tunnel that would carry millions of gallons of climate-harming fossil fuels everyday through our state for up to 99 more years.
There is no doubt that extending the life of this pipeline would exacerbate climate change and the impacts we are already experiencing in Michigan. The Michigan Climate Action Network is working hard to shut down the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline and stop the proposed oil tunnel.

**Stopping the Tunnel**
To build a tunnel, first Enbridge needs approval from the US Army Corps of Engineers and Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). MiCAN has teamed up with attorneys at the Environmental Law & Policy Center to intervene in this case and make sure the impacts this new oil infrastructure would have on the climate are considered.
In April, we won an important victory when **the MPSC ruled to include climate change in Enbridge’s Line 5 permit hearing.** This was a HUGE win, and the first time a state agency is including climate in a review under the Michigan Environmental Protection Act, and the Commissioners overturned the ruling of the Administrative Law Judge to exclude evidence of climate change. This came after our attorneys argued our case to the Commissioners this spring, and we also submitted as public comment a letter signed by 120 businesses and over 2000 people urging the MPSC to include climate change evidence in their review of the proposed Line 5 tunnel.

In June, the Acting Army assistant secretary announced their decision to require the US Army Corp to conduct a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on Enbridge’s proposed tunnel around Line 5. This is a step that could slow down Enbridge’s plans and should result in significant new information about the dangerous climate effects of this proposed project. We fully expect that climate will be included in this EIS, based on executive action by President Biden and statements by the Secretary of Defense, and should result in significant new information about the climate effects of this dangerous and unnecessary tunnel project.

In September, four expert witnesses weighed in with the Michigan Public Service Commission and presented their evidence about whether Enbridge should be allowed to build an oil tunnel beneath the Great Lakes. They used climate data to study the project’s environmental impact, a first under the Michigan Environmental Protection Act. Their findings were clear and undeniable: allowing this oil tunnel to be built will exacerbate the climate crisis, result in an estimated 27 million metric tons of CO2 emitted every year, and will cost tens, if not hundreds of billions of dollars in net climate impacts as a result of the added emissions.

**Shutting Down Line 5**
Michigan can be the first state to shut down an oil pipeline.
While pipelines are federally regulated, Line 5 is unique because it crosses the Great Lakes bottomlands, so Enbridge holds an easement from the State of Michigan for the use of the Great Lakes public trust resource. Enbridge has violated this easement multiple times and Michigan’s Governor, Attorney General, and legislature have a legal pathway to shut down Line 5.
In November 2020, **Gov. Whitmer ordered the shut down of Line 5** by May 2021, but Enbridge continues to illegally operate this pipeline and is fighting to block her action.

Original report: Enbridge temporarily stops Michigan pipeline due to protests
One masked protesters armed with bolt cutters and a plumbers wrench crawled under the fence in Vassar, and then cut a safety device and started cranking a valve to shut down the oil’s flow. It took more than 40 minutes of winding.
The group said they called 911 and Enbridge before going in. The company said it shut down the pipeline itself as a precaution. Enbridge also released a statement, blasting what it calls criminal behavior:
“The groups involved in Tuesday’s incident claim to be protecting the environment, but they do the opposite and put the safety of people at risk — including themselves, first responders and neighboring communities and landowners. “We take this very seriously and will support the prosecution of all those involved.” ~*Enbridge*
“Maybe it wasn’t their goal to put people in danger but they literally put a whole community with a pressurized pipeline in danger of losing their lives, their livelihood and everything that they own,” said state Rep. Phil Green (R-Huron County), who lives a short distance from the pipeline.

Canada cites US treaty in Line 5 pipeline dispute with Michigan
Canada invoked a treaty with the United States and asked a judge Monday to suspend litigation over Michigan’s effort to shut down a Great Lakes oil pipeline.
Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau made clear that his government is backing Enbridge, the Calgary-based company that operates Line 5.
Canada said it requested negotiations with the U.S. about the pipeline. It cited a provision in a 1977 treaty that says no public authority in either country can take steps to interfere with the flow of hydrocarbons. Click here to read more.

Leaders of Michigan’s federally recognized Indigenous tribes recently united to seek the White House’s help in their collective fight to shut down the Line 5 pipeline – particularly the four-mile underwater section in the Great Lakes’ Straits of Mackinac.
President Joe Biden received a collaborative request from Michigan’s 12 federally recognized tribes that make up the Three Fires Confederacy of the Ojibwas, Odawa and Potawatomi to intervene in their ongoing struggle to shut down Line 5 and preserve their treaty rights. Meanwhile, the president received a second letter from a contingent of Republican U.S. Representatives who wished to sway the president to instead keep the petrochemical pipeline flowing.

All 12 federally recognized tribes in Michigan sent a letter to President Joe Biden and his administration Friday, urging him to lend strong support to the state’s effort to shut down the controversial, 78-year-old Line 5 oil pipeline owned by Canadian company Enbridge. “The Governor, the Attorney General, and our Tribal Nations need your Administration’s help,” the letter reads. “… During your campaign, you promised that you would heed our concerns and act to protect our fundamental interests.
“We view Line 5 as an existential threat to our treaty-protected rights, resources, and fundamental way of life as Anishinaabe people of the Great Lakes.”
The 12 tribes — the Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC), Grand Traverse Bay of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Hannahville Indian Community, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe), Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians, Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan and Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians — make up the Three Fires Confederacy of the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi. All are publicly opposed to Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline and its proposed tunnel-enclosed replacement in the Straits of Mackinac.

BMIC President Whitney Gravelle led the effort. The letter was also sent to a list of top state and federal officials, including: U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and his assistant attorneys general; U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland; U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken; Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan; Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel; Gov. Gretchen Whitmer; U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) and Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.); U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm; U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and more.
Whitmer and Nessel are currently locked in several court battles with Enbridge to shut down the pipeline, all but one of which are on pause right now as a federal judge deliberates if litigation should be heard in state or federal court. Whitmer revoked and terminated Enbridge’s easement with the state last fall and ordered a Line 5 shutdown by the spring, which the company is resisting.
In her notice of revocation and termination, Whitmer cited treaty rights and the concerns of Indigenous citizens in the state as one of the main reasons to shut down the pipeline. She specifically mentioned the 1836 Treaty of Washington, which ceded Ojibwe and Odawa lands in Michigan in exchange for fishing, hunting and gathering rights on the treaty territory.
Biden has so far been silent on the issue of Line 5. It is not clear whether he is supportive of Whitmer’s attempts to shut it down, although the two are close allies.
“In contrast to Canada’s vocal support of Enbridge, and despite what we understand to be the Governor’s requests for help, your Administration has thus far been silent regarding Line 5,” the tribes write. “The juxtaposition could not be more stark and could well be apparent to the federal judge considering the matter.”

The tribes’ letter makes three main asks of Biden.
1. The first is for the president to file an official statement of interest via the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) affirming the validity of Whitmer’s May 12 shutdown order, which Enbridge has so far to comply with until Whitmer wins a court order. The tribes also ask that his statement of interest urge a speedy judicial resolution of challenges to the shutdown order.
“The Justice Department’s voice carries great weight … Your Administration should not remain silent here,” the letter reads.
2. The second ask is for Biden to seriously consider revocation of the 1991 Presidential Permit that allows the pipeline to operate. Citing Enbridge’s repeated safety violations over the years and their attempts to thwart Whitmer’s shutdown order, the tribes say that this consideration should be taken in the face of Enbridge’s “lawless action.”
3. Lastly, the tribal nations request that Biden provide them with a seat at the negotiating table. Specifically, they ask to be able to participate in any negotiations with Canada regarding the pipeline with a single designated representative. “We possess rights and interests in the integrity of the Great Lakes that date back to time immemorial, and that are protected by solemn treaties with the United States long predating the agreement Canada rests on,” the letter reads.
In early October, Canada signaled that it had formally invoked dispute settlement mechanisms in its 1977 Treaty with the United States that deals with pipelines. The country’s attempts to pause court proceedings in *State of Michigan v Enbridge* until treaty talks with officials from both countries are complete have so far been unsuccessful. A Biden administration official did not comment directly on the letter in an email on Friday, but said they “expect that both the U.S. and Canada will engage constructively in [the 1977 Treaty] negotiations.

“In addition to being one of our closest allies, Canada remains a key U.S. partner in energy trade as well as efforts to address climate change and protect the environment,” the official said.
Enbridge spokesperson Ryan Duffy also did not comment directly on the letter. He said the company supports the tribes’ sovereignty and treaty rights, the federal government upholding those treaty rights, the restoration of treaty rights and the acknowledgment of historical reservation boundaries.

”Many Michigan Gas Furnaces Could Stop Running If Line 5 Ordered To Close.
“There are millions of people and thousands of businesses on both sides of the border who are dependent on Line 5 to provide the fuel they need for heating, manufacturing, airplanes, roads and automobiles. Line 5 is vital energy infrastructure on a daily basis to Michigan, four other states and Canada’s two largest provinces,” Duffy said.
However, the anti-Line 5 Oil & Water Don’t Mix coalition is “actively supportive” of the letter, said spokesman David Holtz. National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Great Lakes Regional Executive Director Mike Shriberg told the Advance that the letter is “powerful and clear” and “represents a significant escalation of the tasks in front of Biden.”

“Canada is attempting to hijack tribal treaty rights, United States and Michigan sovereignty and the U.S. courts on behalf of Enbridge,” Holtz said Friday. “President Biden cannot remain silent while Canada and Enbridge put Michigan and the Great Lakes at risk. The president should support Gov. Whitmer and reject Canada’s attempt to delay the orderly decommissioning of Line 5.” Biden may do just that!!!

The pipeline, known as Line 5, is 30 inches in diameter and travels from Superior, Wisconsin, through both the Upper and Lower Peninsula of Michigan before ending in Sarnia, Ontario. According to Enbridge, which owns Line 5, closing the 645 mile-long pipeline would mean that Michigan would lose access to 756,000 gallons of propane a day, or 55% of the amount the company supplies to the state. Michigan which has the highest rate of residential propane consumption in the country.
About 315,000 homes in Michigan currently rely on propane, and Line 5 serves an estimated 55% of the state’s propane needs. It provides approximately 65% of the propane used in the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan, with no readily available alternatives.
A Line 5 shutdown would also cause a shortfall of 14.7 million gallons of gas, diesel and jet fuel each day, Enbridge says. That’s 45% of what it supplies to refineries in Michigan, Ohio and the region.
According to PBF Energy, which operates one of two refineries in Toledo:
A Line 5 shutdown would put Ohio refineries at risk. The closure of one of those refineries could result in the loss of $5.4 billion in annual economic output to Ohio and southeast Michigan, and the loss of thousands of direct and contracted skilled trades jobs.
A Line 5 shutdown would, to varying degrees, compromise crude supply to 10 refineries in the region, directly affecting fuel prices. There are no options for replacing the volume of light crude delivered by Line 5; rail can provide less than 10% of that volume. A Line 5 shutdown puts at least 15% of northwest Ohio’s fuel supply at risk, as well as more than half of the jet fuel supplies for the Detroit Metro Airport.

Apocalypticism is the expectation of an apocalypse or “a doctrine concerning an imminent end of the world,” according to Merriam-Webster.
Apocalyptic thinking, in turn, can place a time limit on the public’s perception of climate change, adding a call to action in the climate crisis conversation, the researchers said.
Steven Beschloss, one of the leaders of the project, said the idea of some kind of inevitable apocalypse has always been present in the minds of Americans, but has recently been associated with the way people talk about climate change.
Beschloss is the senior director for narrative development at ASU and a professor of practice in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
An article published in Times Higher Education and Medium, written by Beschloss and religion and technology professor Gaymon Bennett, states that this research project is intended to better grasp the kinds of apocalyptic narratives that have shaped American thinking and action.

“People have notions about the end of times — whether that was something exciting and even entertaining, or whether it was an idea of calamity and a dire future that caused people to be overwhelmed,” Beschloss said. “We felt, sort of in both cases, that it leads to people doing nothing.”
He said there has recently been a spike in catastrophic rhetoric replacing passive talk about climate change in the media.
One example is The Guardian’s style-guide change, urging reporters to use the words “climate crisis” or “climate emergency” rather than “change.”
Beschloss said he does not believe there is one right way to approach the conversation about climate change, but believes media outlets should focus on getting the news out in a way that is both truthful and encourages as many people as possible to act.
“Some people, if you raise an alarm and it’s particularly scary, it might cause them to act,” he said. “In other cases, they may be alarmed and find it scary and then just turn the other way and do nothing.”
Beschloss said that while he believes the terms “crisis” and “emergency” may be the most accurate ways to describe the current state of the planet, the most important goal right now should be “for people, in whatever way is comfortable, to recognize the urgency.”
There is a noticeable generational divide in the way that people talk about the climate crisis, he said.
“I mean it’s truly alarming that you have a lot of older people who might say, ‘I’ll be gone,’” Beschloss said. “I think for a lot of people, they’ve been led to think that the problem is sometime in the future, and that oftentimes can lead people to not pay attention to what’s actually going on right in front of them.”

**ASU’s Global Futures Laboratory is also supporting the project.**
Peter Schlosser, the vice president and vice provost of the Global Futures Laboratory, said the goal of the University lab is to “not just understand how the world works and what kind of pressures we are under, but also to engage in finding options for getting out from underneath that pressure.”
Schlosser said that apart from Beschloss’ “Apocalypticism” project, the Global Futures Laboratory has created formal structures to raise awareness and inform the public about ways they can help combat climate change.
One of these structures is the Narrative Storytelling Initiative, directed by Beschloss.
Beschloss said the purpose of the Narrative Storytelling Initiative, in relation to his upcoming “Apocalypticism” project, is to use different types of storytelling to provoke action against climate change.
Hilairy Hartnett, an associate professor and sustainability scholar at ASU, said that although talk of climate change can often seem “doom and gloom,” she has witnessed a desire in her students to do all they can to stop climate change.
“I think that young people, our students here at ASU, they get it,” Hartnett said. “They really care and want to make a difference, and I think that’s one of the most positive things we can say right now is that young people who are just at the beginning of their careers are really interested in this problem.”

**How are we to square the lack of action to date**
**with climate rhetoric at a fever pitch?**

I have been on the faculty of the University of Colorado since 2001, where
I teach and write on a diverse range of policy and governance issues related to science, innovation, sports. I have degrees in mathematics, public policy and political science. My books include The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Science in Policy and Politics published by Cambridge University Press (2007),   The Climate Fix: What Scientists and Politicians Won’t Tell you About Global Warming (2010, Basic Books) and The Edge: The War Against Cheating and Corruption in the Cutthroat World of Elite Sports (Roaring Forties Press, 2016). My most recent book is The Rightful Place of Science: Disasters and Climate Change (2nd edition, 2018, Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes).

For some, the gap between deeds and words can be explained by the enormous political power of climate deniers. Yet, this argument is difficult to square with evidence. In a poll released this week by YouGov of public opinion on climate change across 28 countries, the United States has the most climate skeptics, with 15% of the public, and all others were at 10% or less. In fact, the survey reveals that far more people were aligned with the rhetoric of catastrophe, with a majority in every country believing that “climate change is likely to cause serious economic damage, destroy cities and start wars.”
The dwindling number of climate skeptics has been overshadowed by calls for action. The youth climate movement has gained enormous traction, with a global strike planned for tomorrow and the major news media has come together to advocate together for climate action. Climate change is among the most successful social movements in recent history. Sure, there remain skeptics and deniers, but if political action on any issue required 100% agreement, nothing would ever get done.

A better explanation for the gap between action and calls for action is the absence of workable policy proposals at the scale of what is needed to start making progress on accelerating decarbonization. Much of what we will see tomorrow with the planned climate strike and next week at the United Nations will represent a victory of exhortation over workable policy.
Demands for action cannot lead to actual action in the absence of viable options. Viability has technical, political, social elements, and more. Scientists have done their job in calling attention to the problems posed by climate change now and in the future. Political advocates, including youth activists, have also done their job in helping to raise the salience of the issue among the public. The job now sits with politicians and those who support them.
But demanding “action” is not enough. Politicians need policy options in order for action to occur. Climate policy is incredibly complex, and options won’t simply emerge from legislative halls. More effort is needed from policy experts to develop, propose, debate and test new paths forward.

Some climate advocates seem to believe that we simply need to get new politicians who can better support the policies that have been tried – and repeatedly failed – for the past generation. Perhaps a better option is to open up the climate discussion to a broader set of voices and views in order to generate options that can be implemented and show results in the short term, based on the politicians we have rather than the ones climate advocates might prefer.
PwC tells us that we need to average a greater than 11% rate of decarbonization for the remainder of this century to achieve deep decarbonization. No one knows how to do this. We are currently at a 1.6% annual rate of decarbonization. If we are to ever get close to 11%+ we will have to learn how to achieve 2%, 3% 4% and so on. It is far more important to figure out how to start meeting the decarbonization challenge, than it is to know how it will end.

The gap between words and deeds on climate policy exists – at least in part – because we have failed to prioritize the short term and the next steps we should take to start what will be a journey of this century. So long as we favor exhortation to act in the absence of practical actions that can meet real-world tests of policy and politics, climate change will continue to be a potent political symbol, but with little connection to actual decarbonization of the global economy.

Apocalypticism is the expectation of an apocalypse or “a doctrine concerning an imminent end of the world,” according to Merriam-Webster.
Apocalyptic thinking, in turn, can place a time limit on the public’s perception of climate change, adding a call to action in the climate crisis conversation, the researchers said.
Steven Beschloss, one of the leaders of the project, said the idea of some kind of inevitable apocalypse has always been present in the minds of Americans, but has recently been associated with the way people talk about climate change.
Beschloss is the senior director for narrative development at ASU and a professor of practice in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
An article published in Times Higher Education and Medium, written by Beschloss and religion and technology professor Gaymon Bennett, states that this research project is intended to better grasp the kinds of apocalyptic narratives that have shaped American thinking and action.

“People have notions about the end of times — whether that was something exciting and even entertaining, or whether it was an idea of calamity and a dire future that caused people to be overwhelmed,” Beschloss said. “We felt, sort of in both cases, that it leads to people doing nothing.”
He said there has recently been a spike in catastrophic rhetoric replacing passive talk about climate change in the media.
One example is The Guardian’s style-guide change, urging reporters to use the words “climate crisis” or “climate emergency” rather than “change.”
Beschloss said he does not believe there is one right way to approach the conversation about climate change, but believes media outlets should focus on getting the news out in a way that is both truthful and encourages as many people as possible to act.
“Some people, if you raise an alarm and it’s particularly scary, it might cause them to act,” he said. “In other cases, they may be alarmed and find it scary and then just turn the other way and do nothing.”
Beschloss said that while he believes the terms “crisis” and “emergency” may be the most accurate ways to describe the current state of the planet, the most important goal right now should be “for people, in whatever way is comfortable, to recognize the urgency.”
There is a noticeable generational divide in the way that people talk about the climate crisis, he said.
“I mean it’s truly alarming that you have a lot of older people who might say, ‘I’ll be gone,’” Beschloss said. “I think for a lot of people, they’ve been led to think that the problem is sometime in the future, and that oftentimes can lead people to not pay attention to what’s actually going on right in front of them.”

**ASU’s Global Futures Laboratory is also supporting the project.**
Peter Schlosser, the vice president and vice provost of the Global Futures Laboratory, said the goal of the University lab is to “not just understand how the world works and what kind of pressures we are under, but also to engage in finding options for getting out from underneath that pressure.”
Schlosser said that apart from Beschloss’ “Apocalypticism” project, the Global Futures Laboratory has created formal structures to raise awareness and inform the public about ways they can help combat climate change.
One of these structures is the Narrative Storytelling Initiative, directed by Beschloss.
Beschloss said the purpose of the Narrative Storytelling Initiative, in relation to his upcoming “Apocalypticism” project, is to use different types of storytelling to provoke action against climate change.
Hilairy Hartnett, an associate professor and sustainability scholar at ASU, said that although talk of climate change can often seem “doom and gloom,” she has witnessed a desire in her students to do all they can to stop climate change.
“I think that young people, our students here at ASU, they get it,” Hartnett said. “They really care and want to make a difference, and I think that’s one of the most positive things we can say right now is that young people who are just at the beginning of their careers are really interested in this problem.”

**with climate rhetoric at a fever pitch?**

I teach and write on a diverse range of policy and governance issues related to science, innovation, sports. I have degrees in mathematics, public policy and political science. My books include The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Science in Policy and Politics published by Cambridge University Press (2007),   The Climate Fix: What Scientists and Politicians Won’t Tell you About Global Warming (2010, Basic Books) and The Edge: The War Against Cheating and Corruption in the Cutthroat World of Elite Sports (Roaring Forties Press, 2016). For some, the gap between deeds and words can be explained by the enormous political power of climate deniers. Yet, this argument is difficult to square with evidence. In a poll released this week by YouGov of public opinion on climate change across 28 countries, the United States has the most climate skeptics, with 15% of the public, and all others were at 10% or less. In fact, the survey reveals that far more people were aligned with the rhetoric of catastrophe, with a majority in every country believing that “climate change is likely to cause serious economic damage, destroy cities and start wars.”
The dwindling number of climate skeptics has been overshadowed by calls for action. The youth climate movement has gained enormous traction, with a global strike planned for tomorrow and the major news media has come together to advocate together for climate action. Climate change is among the most successful social movements in recent history. Sure, there remain skeptics and deniers, but if political action on any issue required 100% agreement, nothing would ever get done.

A better explanation for the gap between action and calls for action is the absence of workable policy proposals at the scale of what is needed to start making progress on accelerating decarbonization. Much of what we will see tomorrow with the planned climate strike and next week at the United Nations will represent a victory of exhortation over workable policy.
Demands for action cannot lead to actual action in the absence of viable options. Viability has technical, political, social elements, and more. Scientists have done their job in calling attention to the problems posed by climate change now and in the future. Political advocates, including youth activists, have also done their job in helping to raise the salience of the issue among the public. The job now sits with politicians and those who support them.
But demanding “action” is not enough. Politicians need policy options in order for action to occur. Climate policy is incredibly complex, and options won’t simply emerge from legislative halls. More effort is needed from policy experts to develop, propose, debate and test new paths forward.

Some climate advocates seem to believe that we simply need to get new politicians who can better support the policies that have been tried – and repeatedly failed – for the past generation. Perhaps a better option is to open up the climate discussion to a broader set of voices and views in order to generate options that can be implemented and show results in the short term, based on the politicians we have rather than the ones climate advocates might prefer.
PwC tells us that we need to average a greater than 11% rate of decarbonization for the remainder of this century to achieve deep decarbonization. No one knows how to do this. We are currently at a 1.6% annual rate of decarbonization. If we are to ever get close to 11%+ we will have to learn how to achieve 2%, 3% 4% and so on. It is far more important to figure out how to start meeting the decarbonization challenge, than it is to know how it will end.

The gap between words and deeds on climate policy exists – at least in part – because we have failed to prioritize the short term and the next steps we should take to start what will be a journey of this century. So long as we favor exhortation to act in the absence of practical actions that can meet real-world tests of policy and politics, climate change will continue to be a potent political symbol, but with little connection to actual decarbonization of the global economy.

A new survey for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) finds that 63 percent, including 72 percent of swing voters, said they oppose “paying $450,000 for ‘psychological trauma’ to every illegal immigrant who was separated from their child when illegally entering the United States.” Meanwhile, just 29 percent of voters support the payouts.
A plan included in Biden’s filibuster-proof $1.75 trillion “Build Back Better Act” reconciliation package would give $80 billion to illegal aliens with children over the course of a decade via an expanded child tax credit. That plan is opposed by about 2-in-3 voters, the NRCC survey found, including 76 percent of swing voters. Only 25 percent of voters said they support the billions for illegal aliens in child tax credits.

As Breitbart News has noted, the $450,000 payouts to border crossers would far exceed the compensation provided to the victims of the September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorist attacks and of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Additionally, analysis by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) calculated that the single payout for a border crosser under the proposal could feed 42 American families for an entire year.

For as long as activism has existed, environmentalists have rallied around demonstrations, protests, and “raising awareness.” In that tradition, since COP26 began, climate activists have been protesting, arguing that actions taken by world leaders at the summit are not enough.

Last week, Greta Thunberg gave a speech in which she said leadership is not going to come from inside COP26 because all world leaders do is “blah blah blah.” Instead, she said climate leadership would come from activists like her. While passionate, this display of vexation toward COP26, in comparison to past international climate summits, COP26 has been impressively action-oriented and fruitful. In light of this, protests and demands come off as petulant, out of touch, and alarmist.

From the very first Earth Day in 1970, young leaders such as Thunberg have been instrumental in making climate change a mainstream issue, but the time for yelling at politicians and calling for an all-or-nothing approach to climate change is over. The real work now should be pushing for solutions, and this work is held back by the naïve tactics imposed by protesters.

Preventing participants from entering COP26 does not inspire action.
At its best, it can raise awareness for a cause. At its worst, it turns would-be allies away and delays the progress protesters so desperately claim to desire. Assuming in good faith that such protests are for the purpose of awareness, it’s important to note that protesting for awareness of climate change in 2021 is nonsensical.

World leaders are well aware that the climate is changing. Instead of vaguely calling for transformative action, climate activists should have clear policy objections.

COP26 comes after a recent iteration of directionless environmental activism: Protesters near London blocked traffic during rush hour to “raise awareness” that climate change is happening. This brand of protesting, in which everyday people who may be sympathetic to the cause are inconvenienced, doesn’t win more support. Instead, the climate movement is seen as hysterical and impractical, rather than a solutions-oriented movement.

These activists aren’t convincing anyone; they’re pissing people off.
What’s more is that the activists in question didn’t carry signs or share a cohesive message. If awareness was truly the goal, it would stand to reason that there would be clarity of message — whatever it is we should be aware of. The supposed shock factor of stopping traffic isn’t enough to convince irritated drivers that they should be scared of climate change.

The cherry on top is that this kind of protest is inherently bad for the environment.
Stopping traffic means that cars are idling, which results in more carbon emissions than if commuters were able to get home normally. Protesting environmental degradation by increasing emissions or carelessly polluting our environment is truly the height of irony. This isn’t unusual for climate protests either. Protesters have been known to leave their signs behind, littering all in the name of climate change. When the Extinction Rebellion dumped cow manure in front of the White House on Earth Day this year, city employees had to clean up the mess.

One group of protesters certainly cannot fix climate change, nor is anyone expecting them to, but there are more constructive directions in which they could direct their energy. Especially at an event such as COP26, activists should be demonstrating how everyday folks can help our environment in addition to the international talks that are occurring. Planting trees in a local park or cleaning up trash from the sidewalk not only has an immediate effect for the community but shows members of the community that they’re serious about improving the environment rather than just committed to causing a scene.

The goal of climate activists should be to convince the broader public that their solutions are not only the best to tackle the problem but also have secondary benefits for the economy and people’s everyday lives. At COP26, climate activists have a responsibility to be realistic and measured with their demands.

HER TRAGIC FIRST SYMPTOM STOPPED THE PERFORMER’S CAREER IN ITS TRACKS.

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, singer Linda Ronstadt discusses how progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) has forced her to retire and how she has come to accept her diagnosis.
Ronstadt shares how the disorder, which was initially diagnosed as Parkinson’s, has caused her to lose motor control of her vocal cords, leading to what would be her last show in 2009. She officially retired from her decades-long singing career four years later.
She also talks about how she has learned to accept her diagnosis, her familial connections to the disease, and the ways she copes with its symptoms.
“I find creative new ways to do things,” she says in the interview. “Eating is hard … I’ve had to relearn how to eat. You could carve a new brain map if you’re patient and willing to do that, but it’s hard.”
Ronstadt is also the focus of a recent CNN Films documentary,

A multi-platinum artist and 11-time Grammy Award winner, **Linda Ronstadt** enjoyed a decades-long musical career beginning in the late ’60s. After first performing with the band Stone Ponies, she later launched a solo career with her breakout album, *Heart Like a Wheel*. Ronstadt became well-known for hits like “When Will I Be Loved” and “You’re No Good,” seamlessly straddling a range of genres including classic rock and country.
The “Blue Bayou” singer announced her retirement from music in 2011, and in 2013, she shared the reason why: she had developed a rare brain disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). A form of Parkinsonism that is distinct from Parkinson’s itself, PSP is a motor disorder that causes problems with walking, balance, eye movements, swallowing, and fine motor coordination. **Ronstadt says her first symptom was a sudden inability to sing.**
Ronstadt said that when her first symptom—a sudden inability to sing—appeared in 2000, her “entire career flashed” before her eyes. “I remembered every show I’d ever done,” she said. Indeed, the first sign that her health was failing did go on to end her storied career. In a 2020 interview with CNN’s **Anderson Cooper**, the singer recalled the moment she suspected she was sick: “I couldn’t hear the top end of my voice. I couldn’t hear the part that
I used to get in tune,” she told Cooper. “My throat would clutch up. It would just be like I had a cramp or something.”
Looking back on the “five or six years” immediately following her first symptoms, she says she continued to appear on stage, relying heavily on her bands and backup singers to disguise the problem.
“I didn’t know why I couldn’t sing — all I knew was that it was muscular, or mechanical. Then, when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I was finally given the reason. I now understand that no one can sing with Parkinson’s disease. No matter how hard you try. And in my case, I can’t sing a note,” she told AARP.

Though she would later be diagnosed with PSP, Ronstadt was originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Both assessments came as a surprise.
“I was expecting [the doctor] was going to say I had a pinched nerve and they could fix it. And he said, ‘Well, I think you might have Parkinson’s disease,’
and I was totally shocked. It took him about a year after that to come to the diagnosis and then took a little bit longer to come to supranuclear palsy,” Ronstadt told CNN.
Unfortunately, while some Parkinson’s patients respond well to certain medications and therapies, Ronstadt says PSP has no such courses of treatment. “I have a form of Parkinsonism that doesn’t respond to standard Parkinson’s meds, so there’s no treatment for what I have,” she explained to AARP.

She lived with symptoms for years before seeing a doctor.

Ronstadt says that her rare diagnosis is an everyday struggle.

“Everything becomes a challenge. Brushing your teeth, taking a shower,”
she shared with CNN. “Eating is hard … I’ve had to relearn how to eat,” she added. However, she says she’s continually adapting to her new circumstances. “I find creative new ways to do things. I’m like a toddler,” Ronstadt said. When asked by Cooper what advice she would give to others facing Parkinson’s or a similar diagnosis, Ronstadt didn’t miss a beat. “Acceptance,” she said.

Freezing can limit household and community mobility, increase risk of falling and contribute to reduced socialization and quality of life.

1. Try another movement – raise an arm, touch your head, point to the ceiling; then re-start
2. Change direction: if you can’t move forward, try stepping sideways and then go forward
3. Carry a laser pointer in your pocket; when you freeze – shine the laser in front of your foot and step on the light – this cue can help you re-start.
4. Visualize an object on the ground in front of you and try to step over it.
5. Wear a metronome on your belt or carry a small one in your pocket – turn it on and the external beat can help you re-start.
6. Try humming a song and time your re-start with the beat of the music
7. Count “1-2-3-go” and then step forward
8. Weight shift side to side to help initiate taking a step
9. March in place a few times and then step forward
10. Don’t fight the freeze by trying harder to step forward – shift your attention from moving the legs to moving the arms – then resume walking forward.

On December 21, 2020 Saturn and Jupiter aligned into a beautiful bright star.

That was the first time they aligned like this since the Middle Ages. According to Forbes, the two planets will look like a “double planet” and provide an extraordinary amount of light. The last time these two planets aligned like this was on March 4, 1226, according to astronomer Patrick Hartigan at Rice University. “Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to be to one another. You’d have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky,” Hartigan said in a statement.

The spectacular sighting will be viewable from anywhere on earth.
“The planets will appear low in the western sky for about an hour after sunset as viewed from the northern hemisphere, and though they’ll be closest on December 21, you can look each evening that week. Although the sight will be sinking towards the horizon, it will be bright enough to be viewed at twilight. All you need is an unobstructed view to the southwest, and to look to the southwest from about 45 minutes after sunset where you are,” Forbes states.
To catch it in the night sky, you’ll need a regular telescope at a minimum.

The recent Jupiter Saturn conjunction on December 21, 2020,
in Aquarius has stirred the question-

**Are we in the Age of Aquarius?**

Well, that depends on who you ask, as there is much debate over when
the Age of Aquarius begins or if it has already started.

For those that believe it has already started, January 13, 1996, December 21, 2012, and December 21, 2020, are all dates that I have seen mentioned.

For those that believe it is yet to start, it’s looking like March 20, 2597,
which is still centuries away.

So, who is right? How do we know?

Let’s first take a look at how Ages are commonly determined.

**The Astrological Ages:**
Every year around March 20-21, we experience the Equinox, a time of equal hours of night and day. The constellation the Sun is in at the time of the March Equinox is said to determine the Age we are in, with each Age lasting about 2,160 years.
Now, before we go any further, it is important to clarify that Western Astrology determines that the March Equinox is the start of the Aries Season. This is how western Astrology birth charts and horoscopes are calculated. They are fixed, making the start of the Aries Season always at the March Equinox.

But, if we are actually looking at where the Sun is based on the constellations (not western zodiacs), we would see that the Sun currently sits in the sign of Pisces at the time of the March Equinox. This method of calculation, which is based on astronomy, would currently put us in the Age of Pisces. The Sun’s position at the Equinox is slowly shifting and when it reaches the sign of Aquarius, that is when some believe we will be in the Age of Aquarius.

Using the current mapping of the constellations by astronomers, this would put the start of the Age of Aquarius in the year 2597. However, here is where it gets complicated and a little confusing. Astrology and astronomy are not always aligned. The constellations are also not all the same size, so not all Ages would neatly fit into the 2,160-year cycle mapped out by the ancients.

Rather than looking to astronomy, some astrologers prefer to use different methods, including the tracking of certain stars and planets, to determine the Ages. These calculations show that we are either very close to or already in the Age of Aquarius.
As there is no definitive date that the Age of Aquarius begins, the only tool we have to go on is our intuition and looking to the themes of the Age of Aquarius vs. The Age of Pisces.

**The Age of Pisces!!!**
This 2,160 year period is considered a time of alchemy, where we are realizing our potential to create. The narrative- if you can dream it, you can do it, is very much connected to the Age of Pisces. During this time, we have used the resources of the Earth and our imaginations to build and create all sorts of things.
The Age of Pisces is strongly connected to our beliefs. All of the major organized religions of the world were founded under the Age of Pisces. Religion has helped to create a sense of belonging, faith, and spiritual understanding, but it has also created severe division, hatred, and manipulation.

Pisces is represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions. These fish are said to represent the duality in the Oneness. During the Age of Pisces, our attention has very much been drawn to the duality of life. While there has been some recognition of Oneness, there have also been many lost in the idea of duality- good and evil, wrong or right. These have all been measures we have used to govern and run society and most religions.
Under the Age of Pisces, where our beliefs are strong, we can become more susceptible to brainwashing, fear-mongering, and manipulation. These are all things we have seen being used against us by society, governments, the media, and so on.

Before the Age of Pisces, we would have been in the Age of Aries, a time of independence and fighting for what we believe in. The Age of Pisces has perhaps allowed us to realize a greater love, to be more compassionate, to attune to the spiritual sides of life, and to realize there is more to life than
we can truly understand.
Hopefully, when the Age of Pisces does end, we would have all learned that
our imagination is limitless, that duality is real but also an illusion, and that love and compassion make for a better world.

**The Age of Aquarius:**
During this period, we move out of the idea of religion into a more open understanding of spirituality. Rather than looking to a spiritual leader, we instead look within to our own inner guidance. We are also less likely to search for spiritual understanding and more likely to trust science and technology.
Robots, artificial intelligence, and microchips are all things associated with the Age of Aquarius. This is truly the digital age, and a time to advance our skills and knowledge using technology.

Along with being a time of rapid technological developments, the Age of Aquarius is also a time of community. Rather than looking to “big things out there” for guidance and support, there is a shift in creating the resources and support that is needed on a more accessible, community-based level.
Aquarian energy is all about humanitarian efforts, so a greater push in this direction is expected. While the Age of Pisces taught us love and compassion, the Age of Aquarius will help us to put those emotions into practical action.

Aquarian energy is very much centered around what is good for the collective and the whole, rather than the individual. It allows us to see that none of us are really thriving until all of us are thriving. Under this energy, we may have to be mindful of getting sucked into a “group-think” mentality or overly compromising our own thoughts and beliefs for the sake of the greater good.
As you can see, both Ages have their light and their dark to work with.
After the Age of Aquarius, we will move into the Age of Capricorn, traveling backward through the zodiac until we return to Aries. At this point, we would have completed what’s known as the Great Year.

**At the end of the day, does it really matter which Age we are in?**
Each Age comes with its own benefits and downsides. Each Age has something to teach and show us. Each Age is important for our growth and evolution here on the planet.
Perhaps the starting of a new Age is not something that can be defined by one particular date. Perhaps it is a slow transition or build into the Age. Perhaps there are many markers along the way that help us to transition and slowly integrate into the new energies that await us.

Or perhaps, on an even deeper level, the astrological Age we are in is all
about our state of mind. Maybe on a psychic level, it is only when we are
“ready” that the Age will begin.
I personally feel we are in a transition period, ebbing and flowing between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius. I don’t know when we will officially root ourselves in the Age of Aquarius, but maybe that is not important for where we are going.

**What exactly is the ‘deep state,’ and is it even real?**

Trump confidants and advisors such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Dennis Kucinich, Corey Lewandowski, and Roger Stone have all insisted that the deep state exists and is at war with President Donald Trump. InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones aired multiple segments linking the deep state to everything from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s resignation to Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with the Russian lawyer. Reports have surfaced detailing that the Trump administration is considering a global network of private spies to counter supposed deep state enemies.
The so-called “deep state,” sometimes also known as “shadow government,”
is often used to describe the bureaucracies of the military and spy agencies and their top secret inner-workings. The roots of the deep state’s creation date back to the end of World War II and the expansion of what President Dwight Eisenhower deemed the “military-industrial complex.” Former congressional staffer Mike Lofgren is the author of *Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of Shadow Government* and offered up the following definition
of the deep state on Bill Moyers.
“(The Deep State) is a hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department. I also include the Department of the Treasury because of its jurisdiction over financial flows, its enforcement of international sanctions and its organic symbiosis with Wall Street.”
Lofgren also includes FISA courts and powerful federal courts such as the Eastern District of Virginia, which has issued subpoenas to Trump associates Paul Manafort and Flynn in connection with the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia, and the Southern District of Manhattan, which has the ability to investigate Trump’s numerous conflicts of interests on Wall Street and once included ousted federal prosecutor Preet Bharara.

The deep state as understood by Lofgren and other national security experts appears to be on an entirely different planet than the conspiratorial deep state of Breitbart and Alex Jones lore. “When I wrote the *Deep State* I began to realize from all these interpretations that when you create a concept and send it out into the world it’s like sending a virus out,” Lofgren said at a panel before the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in June.
“It infects other people. It mutates, and it comes back unrecognizable.”
Lofgren dismissed outside interpretations of the deep state by various conservative media icons, including a scenario posed by Pat Buchanan in which pro-Trump and anti-Trump factions of the federal government are at war with each other. The actual deep state is far more banal, Lofgren argues. Far from being a secret “conspiratorial cabal,” the real deep state, he argues, operates in broad daylight, in the form of thousands of government workers going about their daily duty, and has done so far before Trump ever stepped foot into office.
Breitbart’s definition of deep state encompasses not just an identity but any behavior that can be considered “anti-Trump,” especially leaks, and includes the mainstream media and other factions of the federal government, such as EPA employees who have refused to comply with Trump’s orders.

One Breitbart headline from May trumpeted, “Jack Welch urges Trump to
go to war against the Deep State.” It was an overly generous interpretation of comments made by the former CEO of General Electric in a CNBC interview,
in which Welch criticized Trump’s management of the bureaucracy and firing of James Comey.

The term “deep state” has been used to refer to deliberate leaks designed
to undermine the president, but also to the willing collusion of elements of the mainstream media, the latent distrust and suspected opposition of elements of the intelligence services, but also the willing resistance of certain career civil servants in the agencies charged with carrying President Trump’s directions to fruition.

**Trump and the deep state:**
One could argue that if any American president had a reason to fear backlash from the top-secret factions of his government, it’s Trump. His distrust of the NSA, FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies is unique among American presidents. He likened intelligence officials to Nazis and dismissed the FBI investigation into his campaign’s Russian ties as a “witch hunt.”

The president’s stormy relationship with the intelligence community
came to a boiling point after the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Former CIA case officer and executive director for Council for the National Interest Phil Giraldi maintains there is some truth to a partisan faction within the deep state.
“I think when we talk about the intelligence community, it’s important to analyze what that means,” Giraldi said in an interview with the *Tom Woods Show* podcast.
“The intelligence community is basically 20,000 people like me who are essentially in a certain circumstance where they perform a job of a certain type, and they do their jobs. And they’re loyal to whatever government is in place. But at the top of these organizations, you have people that are heavily politicized. And I would say, ‘Where is the deep state?’ or ‘Where is the establishment?” in the intelligence community, it’s these guys at the top.
These guys were particularly miffed by Trump’s comments, plus these guys lost their status when Trump was elected. So they have an agenda.”

The right’s main issue with the deep state is its alleged leaks to the media.
But leaks involving the Trump White House seem to be coming from everywhere these days: Congress, former and current intelligence and national security officials, and even Trump’s own advisers.

**Deep state terminology:**
Jason Royce Lindsey, the author of *The Concealment of the State*, told the Daily Dot via email that study of deep state terminology has its roots in authoritarian regimes like Egypt and Turkey, where the military-security component is strong. Politicians exist in the “shallow state” and military and security services exist in the “deep state” and are less apparent to the general public. According to Lindsey, the embrace of the deep state concept by Trump supporters gives them someone to blame for the administration’s setbacks.
“The narrative that someone inside the government is to blame is a false one,” Lindsey wrote,“but an easier explanation than laying out the real political complexity of the United States at this time and explaining how the various parts of government have to reach some consensus for actual legislation to happen.”

The numerous definitions of deep state and concept’s enthusiastic embrace by pro-Trump conspiracy theorists make its serious discussion almost impossible. Other experts dismiss the idea of a deep state altogether.

The Daily Dot reached out to Pulitzer Prize-winning national security historian
Tim Weiner to ask him to define what he understood a deep state to mean.
“There is no Deep State,” he wrote to the Daily Dot in a Facebook message.

When asked to explain the many Trump supporters who are convinced of the deep state’s plans to overthrow Trump, Weiner had a one-line response:
“They are deluded.”

In February 2020, Trump cabinet member and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, when asked if a deep state working against President Trump exists, stated that it was “absolutely, 100% true”.^[28] In an article for
*The New York Review of Books*, Michael Tomasky quoted Newt Gingrich as using the term in the context of the Robert Mueller investigation in July 2018, quoting Gingrich stating: “[Mueller is] … the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency”.^[29] Gingrich then added to the statement that “the brazen redefinition of Mueller’s task tells you how arrogant the deep state is and how confident it is it can get away with anything”.^[29]
Stephen Walt, professor of international relations at Harvard University, has written: “There’s no secret conspiracy or deep state running U.S. foreign policy; to the extent that there is a bipartisan foreign-policy elite, it is hiding in plain sight.”^[30]

The term has also been used in comments on the “deep state”-like influence allegedly wielded by career military officers such as H. R. McMaster, John Kelly and James Mattis in the Trump administration.
The anthropologist C. August Elliott described this state of affairs as the emergence of a “shallow state”: “an America where public servants now function as tugboats guiding the President’s very leaky ship through the shallows and away from a potential shipwreck”.^[31]
On September 5, 2018, *The New York Times* published an anonymous op-ed titled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” written by a “senior official in the Trump Administration”. In the essay, the official was critical of President Trump and claimed “that many of the senior officials in [Trump’s] own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations”.^[32] House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy described this as evidence of the deep state at work,^[33] and David Bossie wrote an op-ed at Fox News claiming this was the deep state “working against the will of the American people”.^[34]
However, there was some doubt as to the actual importance of the anonymous author, with some estimating that hundreds or thousands of possible positions could be considered “senior officials”^[35] and the inherent paradox of exposing the existence of such a group.^[36]

I was raised out of a garden and on pinto beans and cornbread! I am a strong healthy mountain girl with a solid immune system. That’s how we roll. We are not afraid to live! Beans, cornbread and running in the woods barefoot S.W. Va mountains. You know not what you speak of! Educate yourself then come back. In Texas 16% of my county has had covid & some of that is reinfections. 84% have NOT had covid. Our vaccination rate is 42%. I’m not a mathematician, but I’m thinking MOST of us haven’t had covid or any vaccine. Our schools have been open & we’re living our regular lives. I live in TN and literally do not know a single person who has gotten covid. On the other hand, my family lives in the locked down NY and all of them except my Mom have gotten it. States with the highest COVID death rates during the Delta wave (updated through Nov. 4).
This tragic list is dominated by states where Republican politicians have pandered to right-wing resistance to vaccination and masking requirements at the expense of their constituents.

States in the north tend to get a surge of cases in the colder months and states in the south tend to get surges in the warmer months. This has to do with more people staying indoors because of the harsh climate. Very little to do with politics.

The map above shows the county level and vote share results of the 2020
US Presidential Election. The darker the blue the more a county went for
Biden and the darker the red the more the county went for Donald Trump.
You can see how it compares to the 2016 map here.

While overall the map doesn’t look too dissimilar from 2016, the results in many ways couldn’t be more different. First and foremost Biden won whereas Clinton lost.
Moreover, as of December 2nd, 2020 Biden had received 15 million more votes than Clinton and 18 million more votes than Trump did in 2016. However, Trump also did better in 2020 than 2016 winning 11 million more votes than he did 4 years earlier, and 8 million more than Clinton did that year.
The difference of course is primarily down to the enormous increase in voter turnout 66.9% in 2020 vs just 55.7% in 2016. This means Biden won 306 electoral college votes compared to 232 for Trump, an almost complete switch from 2016 where he won 304 electoral college votes to 227 for Clinton (there were 7 faithless electors in 2016).
However, in terms of geography the pattern from 2016 largely remained the same. Biden won the majority of the people, Trump won the majority of the land. According to NPR: *“In 2020, just 77 counties total have flipped so far, and Biden won 59 of them.”*
And according to the Brookings Institute: *“Biden-voting counties equal 70% of America’s economy.”* Overall, at the time of writing Biden has won 477 counties, Trump has won 2,497 counties with 110 still outstanding. This means Biden will have won the presidency with the fewest counties (Obama won 689 in 2012), but also the largest number of votes in history.
This is part of a long-term trend where the Democrats are more and more concentrated geographically.
This would not be a problem for them if the presidency were decided by popular vote. But the Electoral College favor small states at the expense of big ones, which means they are facing an increasingly difficult structural challenge. This is a problem both for presidential elections and for hopes of regaining control in the Senate.

The COVID-19 pandemic is fading as a top concern of voters and being replaced by the economy and rising inflation, a troubling sign for President Joe Biden and Democrats heading into the midterm elections.

Just 12% of adults rated health issues like the coronavirus as a top national priority, down from 20% in February, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found for October.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of the country, including the majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents, say that ‘inflation is a very big concern for them.’The job market is also being closely watched as the poll found that 73% of adults want political leaders to focus on jobs and economic growth.

Democrats, meanwhile, are showing signs of panic and asking Biden to deal with this quality of life issues affecting voters.

“We were so willing to take seriously a global pandemic, but we’re not willing to say, ‘Yeah, inflation is a problem, and supply chain is a problem, and we don’t have enough workers in our workforce,’ Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia told The New York Times. ‘We gloss over that and only like to admit to problems in spaces we dominate.’

She also said Biden needs to remind voters why voters put him in the Oval Office. ‘Nobody elected him to be F.D.R., they elected him to be normal and stop the chaos,’ she said, referring to the sweeping net of social programs Biden is seeking to make into law.

Americans are getting hammered at the pump! Bank of America predicts crude oil will skyrocket 43% to $120 a barrel by next summer. With gas prices already at a seven-year high of $3.40 ($6.73 in Mendocino CA).

Inflation in the United States has jumped to a three-decade high while wages haven’t kept pace and prices for food, gas and rent are rising – all putting a growing economic burden on households.

Biden and his administration has argued that as the pandemic fades, the supply chain bottlenecks to unsnarl, more people will return to the workforce, the economy will strengthen and inflation will begin to ease.

The president also touts his Build Back Better package, which he argues multiple Nobel Prize winning economists say would reduce inflation.

But his signature package of social safety net programs has yet to pass Congress and his aides concede that Americans would not see its benefits until next year. Moderate Democrats have raised concerns about its overall price tag, which Biden has cut nearly in half to $1.75 trillion as he tries to get it through the legislative branch.

Rep. Kathleen Rice, a Democrat from New York, told the Times she fears that Biden’s message isn’t resonating with voters. ‘I don’t understand some of my more progressive colleagues saying last night now shows us that what we need to do is get both of these bills done and shove even more progressive stuff in,’ she said. ‘What we’re talking about is not resonating with voters.’

And voters are starting to show their impatience.

On Tuesday, Virginia voters elected a Republican, Glenn Youngkin, as governor, in a state Biden carried by 10 points last year. And, in New Jersey, incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy barely held on for a second term in a state Biden carried by 16 points and where Democrats have a 1 million voter registration advantage.

The president offered a litany of excuses in a press conference on Wednesday, including the fact that his Build Back Better agenda hasn’t passed Congress and Donald Trump supporters.

‘Look, I just think people are at a point, and it is understandable, where there’s a whole lot of confusion. Everything from are you ever going to get COVID under control or are my kids going to be in school, are they going to be able to stay in school to whether or not I’m going to get a tax break that allows me to be able to pay for the needs of my kids and my family,’ he said.

‘People are upset and uncertain about a lot of things – from COVID to school to jobs to a whole range of things, and the cost of a gallon of gasoline,’ the president said.

Thursday’s Reuters/Ipsos poll shows the political landscape is dramatically changing for Biden, who came into office with a promise to end the COVID pandemic and bring back stability after the chaos of the Trump years.

Last November, a majority of voters – 61% – said COVID-19 was ‘an important factor’ in determining their choice for president, and those voters backed Biden with 52% of the vote. And, in the last election, only 33% rated the economy a top concern.

Additionally the president’s approval rating has been on the decline – another worrisome sign.

Biden entered office with the approval of 55% of the country but has seen his popularity decline: 42% of adults say they approve of Biden’s job performance in an NBC News poll that was out Monday.

That poll also found 71% say the country is headed in the wrong direction – a sign of trouble ahead for the political party in power. The right track/wrong track question has proven a reliable forecaster of voter attitudes headed into the voting booth.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online from Oct. 18-22 and gathered responses from 4,430 adults including 2,001 Democrats, 1,591 Republicans and 465 independents. The margin of error is between 2 and 5 percentage points.

Why it’s important: Affordable health care is one of the biggest concerns facing many Americans. And health care spending likely will continue to rise to meet the needs of an aging population.

Hospitals and health systems provide complex, life-saving care, but the country’s fragmented health care system often leaves many hospitals with a daily balancing act to maintain their mission to serve their communities.

The background: Recent health care spending growth has been driven by the increased use and intensity of health services, not by rising medical prices.

More people are insured — the number of uninsured nonelderly Americans fell from 48 million in 2010 to 30 million in the first half of 2020.
People are living longer — The U.S. population over age 65 increased 60% from 2000 to 2020 and is expected to increase another 44% from 2020 to 2040.
More people have chronic diseases – Over half of American adults have been diagnosed with at least one chronic condition and 27% have two or more.

Hospitals Role: Hospitals and health systems have remained leaders in controlling costs within the healthcare field.

Key numbers:

Hospital price growth averaged just 2% annually from 2010 to 2020.
Meanwhile, health insurance premiums have increased 4.4% per year on average since 2010.

Hospitals face significant challenges as they work to reduce the cost of care while maintaining operations.

The challenge: Hospitals have a variety of costs associated with providing care, including wages, prescription drugs, food and medical devices.

Wages and benefits account for well over half of inpatient hospital costs.
Life-saving items such as cardiac defibrillators can cost more than $20,000, while more complex models can cost roughly $40,000.
Hospitals have invested resources in bringing new therapies and technologies to their patients, but this often raises the cost of providing care.

Steep increases in input prices, like rapidly escalating drug prices and labor costs, can undermine hospitals’ efforts to reduce the cost of care.

Prices for drugs purchased directly from manufacturers increased at nearly twice the rate of retail drugs over the past decade.

Additionally, meeting the unique burden of requirements of over 1,000 insurers, including extensive government regulations, results in tremendous administrative and cost burden to hospitals.

COVID-19 has heightened a number of these challenges, as hospitals faced steep financial losses estimated at $54 billion in net income in 2021, with more than a third of hospitals expected to have negative operating margins through year’s end.

Hospitals also experienced dramatic increases in expenses because of COVID-19’s care complexity, supply chain and labor shortages, travel nurses, personal protective equipment (PPE), vaccine testing and distribution.

A recent analysis of workforce data found:

Staffing shortages have cost hospitals approximately $24 billion so far.
Hospitals have also spent an additional $3 billion in acquiring PPE for the additional staff.
Hospitals’ use of contract temporary labor is up 132% for full-time and 131% for part-time staff.

In a year that has been filled with so many mysteries already, I have another very odd one to share with you. Emergency rooms are filled to overflowing all over America, and nobody can seem to explain why this is happening. Right now, the number of new COVID cases in the United States each day is less than half of what it was just a couple of months ago. That is really good news, and many believe that this is a sign that the pandemic is fading. Let us hope that is true. With fewer people catching the virus, you would think that would mean that our emergency rooms should be emptying out, but the opposite is actually happening. All across the country, emergency rooms are absolutely packed, and in many cases we are seeing seriously ill patients being cared for in the hallways because all of the ER rooms are already full.

Let me give you an example of what I am talking about. The following comes from an article entitled “ERs Are Swamped With Seriously Ill Patients, Although Many Don’t Have Covid”…

Inside the emergency department at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, staff members are struggling to care for patients showing up much sicker than they’ve ever seen.
Tiffani Dusang, the ER’s nursing director, practically vibrates with pent-up anxiety, looking at patients lying on a long line of stretchers pushed up against the beige walls of the hospital hallways. “It’s hard to watch,” she said in a warm Texas twang.
But there’s nothing she can do. The ER’s 72 rooms are already filled.

Can anyone explain why this is happening?

If the number of COVID cases was starting to spike again, it would make sense for emergency rooms to be overflowing.

Months of treatment delays have exacerbated chronic conditions and worsened symptoms. Doctors and nurses say the severity of illness ranges widely and includes abdominal pain, respiratory problems, blood clots, heart conditions and suicide attempts, among other conditions.

That mention of “heart conditions” immediately got my attention, because I have been seeing this so much in the news recently.

For instance, a high school senior in Pennsylvania just dropped dead from “a sudden cardiac incident”…

The high school soccer manager ‘greatly enjoyed’ his team’s championship victory Saturday. Later that evening, he was dead.
Now, late student Blake Barklage’s high school is mourning his untimely death. As 6ABC in Philly reports, the tragedy occurred at La Salle College High School in Montgomery County, Pa.
In a letter to parents, the school announced that the senior died after ‘a sudden cardiac incident’ Saturday night.

Elsewhere in the same state, an otherwise healthy 12-year-old boy just suddenly died because of an issue with his coronary artery…

Heart problems kill elderly people all the time, but it is odd that so many healthy young people have been having these problems.

Over the weekend, Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero suddenly collapsed on the pitch during a match.

He was later diagnosed with “a cardiac arrhythmia”…

The 33-year-old Argentinian was examined by medical staff at the stadium before being taken to a nearby hospital where he is still waiting to undergo further examination.

Just two days later, a match in Norway was brought to a screeching halt after a player experienced “cardiac arrest” right in the middle of a match…

A football match in Norway’s second division was halted on Monday after Icelandic midfielder Emil Pálsson suffered a cardiac arrest during play.
The 28-year-old Sogndal player suffered the attack as the game against Stjordals-Blink entered the 12th minute, his club said in a statement.

I have been seeing so many stories like this.

So why are so many young people suddenly having such serious problems with their hearts?
