If it can create heart issues in younger people (hence, many countries stopped using it), it can happen in older people too. Since the start of the outbreak through 11/3/21 CDC data, only 0.65% of US Coronavirus deaths were people under the age 30. My guess is similar numbers happened in Europe, so regulators concluded that the risk of heart issues in this age is worse than the Coronavirus risk.

If the above risk-benefit analysis is part of the decision to stop Moderna use
in younger people, then what about 60-70 year old’s who already had C19?
Do they have natural immunity? For how long/strong? And if it holds,
why risk the shot on them? Basic conversation is missing.

The American Petroleum Institute’s (API) president and CEO tells Fox News that Biden administration policies are a key factor in surging energy prices and he expressed concern for consumers heading into winter months.

“Certainly one of the key factors is that the Biden administration has made an effort to reduce production in the United States,” Mike Sommers told Fox News in an interview. API is a national trade association representing America’s oil and natural gas industry.

Energy prices jumped 4.8% last month and were up 30% over the past year, according to the consumer price index. The API president explained that cutting off the Keystone XL Pipeline, leasing and permitting on federal lands, and access to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, have been consequential for the price of energy. These policies were enacted as part of Biden’s climate change initiative.

Sommers said he is concerned prices will continue to be high “particularly going into the winter months when consumers are using more natural gas to heat their homes.” The Energy Information Administration warned the cost of heating oil is expected to rise approximately 43% compared to last year due to “higher expected fuel costs as well as more consumption of energy due to a colder winter.” The agency expects that “nearly half of U.S. households that heat primarily with natural gas will spend 30% more than they spent last winter on average.”

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told CNN’s “State of the Union” host Dana Bash on Sunday that Americans should expect to pay higher costs for heating this winter. “We have the same problem in fuels that the supply chains have, which is that oil and gas companies are not flipping the switch as quickly as the demand requires,” Granholm said. But, Sommers told Fox News, “when the administration is continually putting forward new proposals to limit production in the United States, American oil and gas companies are cutting back on production.”

Granholm told Bash: “the president is all over this” and “looking at all of the tools he has” to address high gas prices. Sommers also worried about America’s future dependence on other countries. “We have been able to limit the amount of dependence that we’ve had on foreign countries for our oil and gas over the course of the last decade.” Sommers said he believes Biden has started to reverse that trend and “we need to continue development in the United States, rather than being dependent on other countries for American energy.”

8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev’s promise in 1955 to settle the Germany question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the U.S. has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. [Note: There are still American intellectuals, and elected members of Congress, who dream of an eventual one world government and who view the U.N., founded by communists such as Alger Hiss, the first secretary-general, as the instrument to bring this about. 12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party. 16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions, by claiming their activities violate civil rights. 24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.

[Note: This is the Gramscian agenda of the “long march through the institutions” spelled out explicitly: gradual takeover of the “means of communication” and then using those vehicles to debauch the culture and weaken the will of the individual to resist.]
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural and healthy.” [Note: Today those few who still have the courage to advocate public morality are denounced and viciously attacked. Most Americans are entirely unwitting regarding the motives behind this agenda.]
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.” [Note: This has been largely accomplished through the communist infiltration of the National Council of Churches, Conservative and Reform Judaism, and the Catholic seminaries.]
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the grounds that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state”
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”

Eva Marie Cassidy was an American singer and guitarist known for her interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music, sung with a powerful, emotive soprano voice. In 1992, she released her first album, The Other Side,
a set of duets with go-go musician Chuck Brown, followed by the 1996 live solo album titled Live at Blues Alley.
Although she had been honored by the Washington Area Music Association, she was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C. She died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33.
Two years after her death, Cassidy’s music was brought to the attention
of British audiences, when her versions of “Fields of Gold” and “Over the Rainbow” were played by Mike Harding and Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. Following the overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of “Over the Rainbow”, taken at Blues Alley in Washington by her friend Bryan McCulley, was shown on BBC Two‘s Top of the Pops 2. Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies.^[1] Her music has also charted within the top 10 in Australia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.^[2]

Early life: Born on February 2, 1963, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.,^[3] Cassidy grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and later Bowie, Maryland. She was the third of four children. Her father, Hugh Cassidy, is a teacher, sculptor, musician, former army medic, and world champion powerlifter of Irish and Scottish descent, while her mother, Barbara (née Kratzer), is a German horticulturist from Bad Kreuznach.^[2][4][5] From an early age, Cassidy displayed interest in art and music. When she was nine, her father began teaching her to play the guitar, and she began to play and sing at family gatherings.^[4]
At age 11, Cassidy began singing and playing guitar in a Washington-area band called Easy Street.^[6] This band performed in a variety of styles at weddings, corporate parties, and pubs. Due to her shyness, she struggled with performing in front of strangers.^[7] While a student at Bowie High School, she sang with a local band called Stonehenge.^[4] During the summer of 1983, Cassidy sang and played guitar six days a week at the theme park Wild World.^[4] Her younger brother Dan, a fiddler, was also a member of this working band. She enrolled in art classes at Prince George’s Community College but dropped out after finding them unhelpful.^[8]
Throughout the 1980s, Cassidy worked with several other bands, including the techno-pop band Characters Without Names. During this period, she worked as a propagator at a plant nursery and as a furniture painter. In her free time, she explored other artistic expressions including painting, sculpting, and jewelry design.^[8]

Music career: In 1986, Cassidy was asked by Stonehenge guitarist and high school friend, David Lourim, to lend her voice to his music project, Method Actor.^[9] This brought her to Black Pond Studios, where she met recording engineer and bassist Chris Biondo. Biondo helped her find work as a session singer and later introduced her to Al Dale, who would become her manager. She sang back-ups for various acts, from go-go rhythm and blues band Experience Unlimited to rapper E-40.^[10] Biondo and Cassidy, who were in a romantic relationship for a time, formed the five-piece “Eva Cassidy Band” with Lenny Williams, Keith Grimes and Raice McLeod in 1990.
They began to perform frequently in the Washington area.^[4]

In 1992, Biondo played a tape of Cassidy’s voice for Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of go-go”.^[11] It resulted in the duet album The Other Side featuring performances of classic songs such as “Fever“, “God Bless the Child,” and what would later become Cassidy’s signature song, “Over the Rainbow“. The album was released and distributed in 1992 by Liaison Records, the label that also released Brown’s Go-go albums. Brown originally intended to record an additional duet with Cassidy for his next solo album, but this was postponed due to ongoing negotiations between Dale and other labels for a solo deal.^[10][12]
Cassidy’s unwillingness to narrow her stylistic focus to one genre hindered her chances of securing a deal.^[13][14] After talks broke down, the two decided to record their own duet album. As a duo, they performed at the Columbia Arts Festival and opened for acts like Al Green and The Neville Brothers.^[10]

In 1993, Cassidy was honored by the Washington Area Music Association with a Wammie award for the Vocalist Jazz/Traditional category.^[16] The next year she was invited to perform at the event and chose to sing “Over the Rainbow”. The Washington Times review of the event called her performance “a show-stopper”.^[17] She took home two Wammies that night, again for Vocalist Jazz/Traditional and also for Roots Rock/Traditional R&B.^[16]
For a brief period that year, Cassidy signed a deal with Blue Note Records to pair up with pop-jazz band Pieces of a Dream to release an album and tour the country. She sang two tracks in a mainly instrumental album. It was a musically unsatisfying experience for her.^[10]
After having a potential contract with Apollo Records collapse when the label went bankrupt, Biondo and Dale decided that she should release her own live album.^[10] On January 2–3, 1996, the material for Live at Blues Alley was recorded at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. Due to a technical glitch on the first night of recording,^[18] only the second night’s recording was usable, with 12 songs released on the resulting album. (The complete set of 31 songs recorded that night was eventually released 20 years later as Nightbird in 2015.)
Unhappy with the way she sounded due to a cold, she was reluctant to release the album. She eventually relented, on the condition that the studio track “Oh, Had I a Golden Thread”, Cassidy’s favorite song,^[19] would be included in the release, and that they start working on a follow-up studio album.^[8][10]
Her apprehension appeared unfounded as local reviewers and the public responded positively.^[8] The Washington Post commented that “she could sing anything — folk, blues, pop, jazz, R&B, gospel — and make it sound like it was the only music that mattered.”^[11] The subsequent studio album she worked on was released posthumously as Eva by Heart in 1997. In the liner notes of Eva by Heart, music critic Joel E. Siegel described Cassidy as “one of the greatest voices of her generation.”^[8]

Death: In 1993, Cassidy had a malignant mole removed from her back. Three years later, during a promotional event for the Live at Blues Alley album in July 1996, Cassidy noticed an ache in her hips, which she attributed to stiffness from painting murals while perched atop a stepladder.^[11] The pain persisted and X-rays revealed a fracture. Further tests found that cancer had spread to her bones, causing the fracture, as well as to her lungs.^[20]
Her doctors estimated she had three to five months to live. Cassidy opted for aggressive treatment, but her health deteriorated rapidly.
On September 17,^[20] at a benefit concert for her at the Bayou, she made her final public appearance, closing the set with “What a Wonderful World” in front of an audience of family, friends, and fans. Additional chemotherapy was ineffective, and Cassidy died on November 2, 1996 of melanoma, at her family’s home in Bowie, Maryland.^[2][11][21] In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated and the ashes were scattered on the lake shores of St. Mary’s River Watershed Park, a nature reserve near Callaway, Maryland.^[2]

The sweet soprano of Eva Cassidy singing standards like “Over the Rainbow” feels both divine and sorrowful. Perhaps her life’s story insinuated its way into her lilting delivery. While her album, Songbird, sold more than five million copies worldwide — reaching platinum status six times in England and becoming certified platinum in the United States in 2008, according to Grunge News – Cassidy never knew of her success. She died of cancer in 1996, age 33.
The Washington-based singer received minimal attention during her life, according to The New York Times. She performed “in relative obscurity” with recordings that received “minimal radio play on this side of the Atlantic.” She released one album, a live jam from the Washington club Blues Alley that she financed and sold from her car to her hometown fans. She started performing there in the mid-’80s when she sang with soul singer Chuck Brown. Together they recorded an album titled The Other Side.

She also worked with Chris Biondo, a recording engineer and musician.
The music they created became the album Eva by Heart. By then, Cassidy’s cancer was spreading. Her first brush with cancer happened in 1992 when she saw a mole on her shoulder. That melanoma was removed, according to The Independent. “It was believed that the doctors had got whatever vestiges remained of the melanoma,” Cassidy’s father, Hugh, told the publication. Unfortunately, Eva made the mistake of not following up with her physicians.

SHE EARNED RECOGNITION POSTHUMOUSLY
Cassidy felt pain in her hip and was scheduled for replacement surgery. During her pre-testing, an X-ray showed that the cancer had spread to her lungs. For her final concert, she sang “What a Wonderful World.” At the time, Cassidy was undergoing aggressive chemotherapy. Two months later she was dead. Eva By Heart was released posthumously.
Bill Straw, president of Blix Street Records, became her fairy godfather. He received a tape of Cassidy’s Blues Alley session. “It didn’t take a genius to figure it out,” he told The New York Times. “The moment I listened to that tape,
I knew this was one of the best singers I’d ever heard.” Blix Street released her first nationally distributed album in 1998.
The popularity of Cassidy’s music grew slowly. It hit big in Britain first, gaining attention from a spot on the BBC Radio 2’s morning show. In late 2000, NPR’s Morning Edition did a feature on Cassidy, followed by a program on Nightline that spring. Momentum kept building and Cassidy’s story was shared by Billboard, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Olympic silver medalist Michelle Kwan used Cassidy’s version of “Fields of Gold” in her 2002 exhibition program.
A greatest hits collection, The Best of Eva Cassidy, was released in 2012. All these years later, Cassidy’s music lives on. Her rendition of “Time After Time” recently appeared on a Kay Jewelers ad, according to her website.
She might be gone, but she’s not forgotten.

It’s just after midnight, Nov. 02, 2021, twenty-five years after Eva’s passing, and I wanted to write this vigil post commemorating Eva’s Quadrans-Centennial Anniversary and to celebrate her “Gift of Music” she left behind for us all. To me, it is the finest music ears can hear, and I thank God for those who were insightful enough to preserve it. I first heard Eva’s heavenly voice in Jan. of 2021, and I knew then, I’d found the Holy Grail of vocalists. Few artists ever caused me to weep hearing their music, but Eva evoked that level of emotion from me, repeatedly.
Somehow, Eva’s creative, humble spirit paired with her bold, vocal perfection made a spiritual connection with me unlike any singer/songwriter/musician before. It was like finding gold and then developing gold fever. I called it “Eva Fever.” For the past year, I’ve dug deep into Eva’s goldmine of music, and my obsession has grown song by song, all the while finding we are kindred spirits in music and spiritual beliefs. It’s been wonderful being able to read so many stories about her, and today, I’m even more in awe of Eva’s life and her musical skills. I don’t think I’ll ever get over “Eva Fever,” nor will I ever want to. You have inhabited this song and made Christine McVie’s masterpiece your own. Your voice soars like a songbird.

Researchers hail a new cancer treatment that unlocks the body’s immune system. Researchers meeting in Chicago are hailing what they believe may be a potent new weapon in the fight against cancer: the body’s own immune system. A British-led study found that a combination of two drugs that helped allow the immune system to fight the cancer — Ipilimumab and Nivolumab — stopped the deadly skin cancer melanoma from advancing for nearly a year in 58% of the cases. The study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Melanoma, though a skin cancer, can spread to the lungs, liver, bone, lymph nodes and brain. Other studies have shown promise in treating lung cancer. The research is being presented in Chicago at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Those involved in the fight against cancer are divided as to just how excited to get over the promise of immunotherapy in battling cancer.

“Immunotherapy drugs have already revolutionized melanoma treatment, and now we’re seeing how they might be even more powerful when they’re combined,” said Dr. Steven O’Day, an expert with the American Society of Clinical Oncology. “But the results also warrant caution — the Nivolumab and Ipilimumab combination used in this study came with greater side effects, which might offset its benefits for some patients. Barrie said immunotherapy could offer hope to people with cancers that are otherwise difficult to treat, such as melanoma, advanced lung cancer or cancer that has spread throughout the body. “We’re looking at another weapon in the arsenal,” she said. At the heart of immunotherapy is that cancer — unlike most other diseases — is not an invader. It consists instead of the body’s own cells gone rogue. So the immune system is not programmed to target the cancerous cells because it does not recognize them as foreign.

Eva Marie Cassidy was an American singer and guitarist known for her interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music, sung with a powerful, emotive soprano voice. In 1992, she released her first album, The Other Side,
a set of duets with go-go musician Chuck Brown, followed by the 1996 live solo album titled Live at Blues Alley.
Although she had been honored by the Washington Area Music Association, she was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C. She died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33.
Two years after her death, Cassidy’s music was brought to the attention
of British audiences, when her versions of “Fields of Gold” and “Over the Rainbow” were played by Mike Harding and Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. Following the overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of “Over the Rainbow”, taken at Blues Alley in Washington by her friend Bryan McCulley, was shown on BBC Two‘s Top of the Pops 2. Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies.^[1] Her music has also charted within the top 10 in Australia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.^[2]

Early life: Born on February 2, 1963, at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.,^[3] Cassidy grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, and later Bowie, Maryland. She was the third of four children. Her father, Hugh Cassidy, is a teacher, sculptor, musician, former army medic, and world champion powerlifter of Irish and Scottish descent, while her mother, Barbara (née Kratzer), is a German horticulturist from Bad Kreuznach.^[2][4][5] From an early age, Cassidy displayed interest in art and music. When she was nine, her father began teaching her to play the guitar, and she began to play and sing at family gatherings.^[4]
At age 11, Cassidy began singing and playing guitar in a Washington-area band called Easy Street.^[6] This band performed in a variety of styles at weddings, corporate parties, and pubs. Due to her shyness, she struggled with performing in front of strangers.^[7] While a student at Bowie High School, she sang with a local band called Stonehenge.^[4] During the summer of 1983, Cassidy sang and played guitar six days a week at the theme park Wild World.^[4] Her younger brother Dan, a fiddler, was also a member of this working band. She enrolled in art classes at Prince George’s Community College but dropped out after finding them unhelpful.^[8]
Throughout the 1980s, Cassidy worked with several other bands, including the techno-pop band Characters Without Names. During this period, she worked as a propagator at a plant nursery and as a furniture painter. In her free time, she explored other artistic expressions including painting, sculpting, and jewelry design.^[8]

Music career: In 1986, Cassidy was asked by Stonehenge guitarist and high school friend, David Lourim, to lend her voice to his music project, Method Actor.^[9] This brought her to Black Pond Studios, where she met recording engineer and bassist Chris Biondo. Biondo helped her find work as a session singer and later introduced her to Al Dale, who would become her manager. She sang back-ups for various acts, from go-go rhythm and blues band Experience Unlimited to rapper E-40.^[10] Biondo and Cassidy, who were in a romantic relationship for a time, formed the five-piece “Eva Cassidy Band” with Lenny Williams, Keith Grimes and Raice McLeod in 1990.
They began to perform frequently in the Washington area.^[4]

In 1992, Biondo played a tape of Cassidy’s voice for Chuck Brown, the “Godfather of go-go”.^[11] It resulted in the duet album The Other Side featuring performances of classic songs such as “Fever“, “God Bless the Child,” and what would later become Cassidy’s signature song, “Over the Rainbow“. The album was released and distributed in 1992 by Liaison Records, the label that also released Brown’s Go-go albums. Brown originally intended to record an additional duet with Cassidy for his next solo album, but this was postponed due to ongoing negotiations between Dale and other labels for a solo deal.^[10][12]
Cassidy’s unwillingness to narrow her stylistic focus to one genre hindered her chances of securing a deal.^[13][14] After talks broke down, the two decided to record their own duet album. As a duo, they performed at the Columbia Arts Festival and opened for acts like Al Green and The Neville Brothers.^[10]

In 1993, Cassidy was honored by the Washington Area Music Association with a Wammie award for the Vocalist Jazz/Traditional category.^[16] The next year she was invited to perform at the event and chose to sing “Over the Rainbow”. The Washington Times review of the event called her performance “a show-stopper”.^[17] She took home two Wammies that night, again for Vocalist Jazz/Traditional and also for Roots Rock/Traditional R&B.^[16]
For a brief period that year, Cassidy signed a deal with Blue Note Records to pair up with pop-jazz band Pieces of a Dream to release an album and tour the country. She sang two tracks in a mainly instrumental album. It was a musically unsatisfying experience for her.^[10]
After having a potential contract with Apollo Records collapse when the label went bankrupt, Biondo and Dale decided that she should release her own live album.^[10] On January 2–3, 1996, the material for Live at Blues Alley was recorded at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. Due to a technical glitch on the first night of recording,^[18] only the second night’s recording was usable, with 12 songs released on the resulting album. (The complete set of 31 songs recorded that night was eventually released 20 years later as Nightbird in 2015.)
Unhappy with the way she sounded due to a cold, she was reluctant to release the album. She eventually relented, on the condition that the studio track “Oh, Had I a Golden Thread”, Cassidy’s favorite song,^[19] would be included in the release, and that they start working on a follow-up studio album.^[8][10]
Her apprehension appeared unfounded as local reviewers and the public responded positively.^[8] The Washington Post commented that “she could sing anything — folk, blues, pop, jazz, R&B, gospel — and make it sound like it was the only music that mattered.”^[11] The subsequent studio album she worked on was released posthumously as Eva by Heart in 1997. In the liner notes of Eva by Heart, music critic Joel E. Siegel described Cassidy as “one of the greatest voices of her generation.”^[8]

Death: In 1993, Cassidy had a malignant mole removed from her back. Three years later, during a promotional event for the Live at Blues Alley album in July 1996, Cassidy noticed an ache in her hips, which she attributed to stiffness from painting murals while perched atop a stepladder.^[11] The pain persisted and X-rays revealed a fracture. Further tests found that cancer had spread to her bones, causing the fracture, as well as to her lungs.^[20]
Her doctors estimated she had three to five months to live. Cassidy opted for aggressive treatment, but her health deteriorated rapidly.
On September 17,^[20] at a benefit concert for her at the Bayou, she made her final public appearance, closing the set with “What a Wonderful World” in front of an audience of family, friends, and fans. Additional chemotherapy was ineffective, and Cassidy died on November 2, 1996 of melanoma, at her family’s home in Bowie, Maryland.^[2][11][21] In accordance with her wishes, her body was cremated and the ashes were scattered on the lake shores of St. Mary’s River Watershed Park, a nature reserve near Callaway, Maryland.^[2]

She loved music from an early age, particularly folk and jazz (as a girl, her favorite singer was Buffy Sainte-Marie ), and learned guitar from her father Hugh.
The sweet soprano of Eva Cassidy singing standards like “Over the Rainbow” feels both divine and sorrowful. Perhaps her life’s story insinuated its way into her lilting delivery. While her album, Songbird, sold more than five million copies worldwide — reaching platinum status six times in England and becoming certified platinum in the United States in 2008, according to Grunge News – Cassidy never knew of her success. She died of cancer in 1996, age 33.
The Washington-based singer received minimal attention during her life, according to The New York Times. She performed “in relative obscurity” with recordings that received “minimal radio play on this side of the Atlantic.” She released one album, a live jam from the Washington club Blues Alley that she financed and sold from her car to her hometown fans. She started performing there in the mid-’80s when she sang with soul singer Chuck Brown. Together they recorded an album titled The Other Side.

She also worked with Chris Biondo, a recording engineer and musician.
The music they created became the album Eva by Heart. By then, Cassidy’s cancer was spreading. Her first brush with cancer happened in 1992 when she saw a mole on her shoulder. That melanoma was removed, according to The Independent. “It was believed that the doctors had got whatever vestiges remained of the melanoma,” Cassidy’s father, Hugh, told the publication. Unfortunately, Eva made the mistake of not following up with her physicians.

SHE EARNED RECOGNITION POSTHUMOUSLY
Cassidy felt pain in her hip and was scheduled for replacement surgery. During her pre-testing, an X-ray showed that the cancer had spread to her lungs. For her final concert, she sang “What a Wonderful World.” At the time, Cassidy was undergoing aggressive chemotherapy. Two months later she was dead. Eva By Heart was released posthumously.
Bill Straw, president of Blix Street Records, became her fairy godfather. He received a tape of Cassidy’s Blues Alley session. “It didn’t take a genius to figure it out,” he told The New York Times. “The moment I listened to that tape,
I knew this was one of the best singers I’d ever heard.” Blix Street released her first nationally distributed album in 1998.
The popularity of Cassidy’s music grew slowly. It hit big in Britain first, gaining attention from a spot on the BBC Radio 2’s morning show. In late 2000, NPR’s Morning Edition did a feature on Cassidy, followed by a program on Nightline that spring. Momentum kept building and Cassidy’s story was shared by Billboard, Rolling Stone, and other publications. Olympic silver medalist Michelle Kwan used Cassidy’s version of “Fields of Gold” in her 2002 exhibition program.
A greatest hits collection, The Best of Eva Cassidy, was released in 2012. All these years later, Cassidy’s music lives on. Her rendition of “Time After Time” recently appeared on a Kay Jewelers ad, according to her website.
She might be gone, but she’s not forgotten.

It’s just after midnight, Nov. 02, 2021, twenty-five years after Eva’s passing, and I wanted to write this vigil post commemorating Eva’s Quadrans-Centennial Anniversary and to celebrate her “Gift of Music” she left behind for us all. To me, it is the finest music ears can hear, and I thank God for those who were insightful enough to preserve it. I first heard Eva’s heavenly voice in Jan. of 2021, and I knew then, I’d found the Holy Grail of vocalists. Few artists ever caused me to weep hearing their music, but Eva evoked that level of emotion from me, repeatedly.
Somehow, Eva’s creative, humble spirit paired with her bold, vocal perfection made a spiritual connection with me unlike any singer/songwriter/musician before. It was like finding gold and then developing gold fever. I called it “Eva Fever.” For the past year, I’ve dug deep into Eva’s goldmine of music, and my obsession has grown song by song, all the while finding we are kindred spirits in music and spiritual beliefs. It’s been wonderful being able to read so many stories about her, and today, I’m even more in awe of Eva’s life and her musical skills. I don’t think I’ll ever get over “Eva Fever,” nor will I ever want to. You have inhabited this song and made Christine McVie’s masterpiece your own. Your voice soars like a songbird.

Researchers hail a new cancer treatment that unlocks the body’s immune system. Researchers meeting in Chicago are hailing what they believe may be a potent new weapon in the fight against cancer: the body’s own immune system. A British-led study found that a combination of two drugs that helped allow the immune system to fight the cancer — Ipilimumab and Nivolumab — stopped the deadly skin cancer melanoma from advancing for nearly a year in 58% of the cases. The study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Melanoma, though a skin cancer, can spread to the lungs, liver, bone, lymph nodes and brain. Other studies have shown promise in treating lung cancer. The research is being presented in Chicago at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Those involved in the fight against cancer are divided as to just how excited to get over the promise of immunotherapy in battling cancer.

Whether it’s climbing an actual mountain or setting sail for an epic water adventure, many adults have unrealized life goals that require them to be physically active. It’s common for them to claim that they will get to it —
someday when they are in better shape or have more time.

James Zambroski is a cancer survivor.
James Zambroski is a cancer survivor who is managing to live as most of us live, but going even farther – to compete in some of the most strenuous athletic activities available. His journey is one that everyone can learn from, whether you’re fighting a disease or simply needing a reason to get up and do that one thing you’ve always wanted to do.

Always active, even after a diagnosis
At 68, Zambroski has always considered himself to be an active person. And he’s never stopped moving – from doing all of his own yard work, including maintaining 50 rose bushes, to getting certified by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) as an advanced open water diver.
“My logbook shows 75 dives in the Atlantic off the east coast of Florida and, during a week in Honduras, I was awarded an Iron Diver medal for completing all dives during a week aboard the Roatan Aggressor,” he said.
When he received an “advanced, high grade” prostate cancer diagnosis in 2018, he had some decisions to make. One of those decisions was whether to participate in the Chicago Marathon, which he did just two months after learning about his cancer.

“Now, mind you, out of about 14,800 finishers, I was around 14,700.

In fact, my wife and her friends were so worried about where I was that
they began looking for me in race course medical tents,” he explained.
He described his run as more of a “plod,” but he wasn’t going to miss out on the experience that he had planned for with his wife. The couple was involved in running clubs in the Tampa Bay area, and the social aspect was just as important as the physical one for Zambroski.

A surreal experience
The realities of cancer treatment couldn’t be ignored, however, and when radiation began, Zambroski needed to change course.
“Every morning for six weeks, five days a week, I got up at 7 a.m., didn’t pee, drank 16 ounces of water so I would have the required full bladder, then got
in my car and drove 25 minutes to radiation oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center
in Tampa, Florida,” he said.
Describing the experience as “totally bizarre,” he admits that he felt disconnected from reality during treatments, like he was in a daze.
Still, he maintained his focus on getting back to health.
“I kept telling myself, ‘This is cancer. This is what you have to do to beat cancer,’” he said. “And that made it all right.”

Endurance for the many miles ahead
With both chemo and radiation behind him, Zambroski has since embarked
on a new journey, one that has him riding a bike instead of running or diving. Most recently, he participated in the American Cancer Society’s 300 Mile Bike Challenge, which had him covering over 100 miles in the first seven days alone.
Cycling was a natural next step in his physical fitness routine, and he explained why he chose a bike over putting on his running shoes again.
“Since my testosterone levels needed to be lowered with treatment as a means to fight my tumor, bike riding was a little less strenuous and a whole lot more fun,” he said.
“Mentally, I was more up for persuading myself to go for a ride rather than a three-mile run. I already was doing tough things over which I had no choice (radiation and chemo, for example); I wasn’t into gutting it out for a maximum workout, like running, just because I thought I should.”
The decision to take two wheels to his next destination has been a rewarding one.
“Truth is, I just liked riding a bike better than lacing up running shoes and pounding pavement,” Zambroski said.
He not only enjoys the experience of the open road, but he has also used his time on the trail to share with others. Taking selfies and sharing them on Facebook, along with his Map My Ride stats, has become a habit for Zambroski, one that will likely encourage others to get up and start moving, too.

Advice for others with cancer
It’s understandable that not everyone can follow in Zambroski’s footsteps
to put hundreds of miles behind them so soon after cancer treatment.
He shares what has worked for him outside of physical activity.

“I have found great comfort and support by being public about my illness.
It takes a lot of getting used to – hearing your name and the word ‘cancer’ in the same sentence,” he explained. “Telling people I have cancer, what I’m doing about it, what the doctors are saying, what’s my next step and so forth is very empowering, especially when the people I’m speaking to are uncomfortable with the subject.”
Now in remission, he gets checkups every six months to keep tabs on any possibility of a recurrence. His own outlook appears bright.

“I am very positive about the future, partly because I know this particular treatment regimen works. And if something else comes up, there are options,” he said. “I will never curl up in a ball and surrender to anything health-wise;
I will fight, fight, fight and talk about it every minute. But today, I’m grateful, feeling good and successful, so far.”

Many often feel they shouldn’t put off their life goals until a better time.
Whether it’s climbing an actual mountain or setting sail for an epic water adventure, many adults have unrealized life goals that require them to be physically active. It’s common for them to claim that they will get to it —
someday when they are in better shape or have more time.

James Zambroski is a cancer survivor who is managing to live as most of us live, but going even farther – to compete in some of the most strenuous athletic activities available. His journey is one that everyone can learn from, whether you’re fighting a disease or simply needing a reason to get up and do that one thing you’ve always wanted to do.

He fought it and He survived

With the 105th pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Pitt running back and Erie, Pa., native James Conner.

Just 16 months prior, Conner was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma and spent his offseason dealing with cancer treatments. The 2014 ACC player of the year, Conner worked out with his Pitt teammates even as he underwent 12 chemotherapy treatments. He was on the field and in uniform for the Panthers’ season opener last fall, announcing his comeback with two touchdowns in the game. Conner finished his final college season with 1,060 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns; he added 20 receptions and four receiving touchdowns. Just before he went to the combine in Indianapolis, Conner got word that his most recent scan was clean and he continues to be cancer-free.

James Conner is a cancer survivor.
Conner’s battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma has been well chronicled throughout his career. Conner tore his MCL during his junior season at Pitt. While running tests, doctors discovered Conner had tumors surrounding his heart. He underwent chemotherapy, and was able to return to Pitt for a redshirt junior season. Conner was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Conner didn’t play much during his rookie season with the Steelers, but broke out in 2018. As Le’Veon Bell sat out, Conner rushed for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl.
Despite his battle with cancer, he did not consider opting out of the 2020 NFL season, according to Pryor.
James Conner received a cancer diagnosis that was so severe, he was told by a medical professional that he had about a week to live. A college student with his entire life in front of him, at the top of his game. Seven days and his life would be over. Think about that. You’re an athlete, a young adult, a healthy guy. You go to the doctor for a mundane issue, and the doctor says you may be dead before next Sunday.

He fought it and he survived.
It’s difficult to even imagine what the battle looked like. His heart was surrounded by tumors. He was pumped full of chemicals with side effects both known and unknown to give him a chance to stay alive. His challenge was to not just overcome cancer but continue to perform at the level of an elite athlete. Nobody can do that. It doesn’t even make sense. But Conner did it.
Conner visits cancer wards regularly. His life is proof that patients can overcome their diagnosis, no matter how dark. They are more that just cancer patients, they are human beings with beautiful lives and family and friends. It’s not just survival they have to look forward to, but fulfilling their hopes and dreams. Cancer won’t define them, it’s just an obstacle that they can overcome.
There was a post here recently about Conner receiving an award for fighting through adversity. No, it wasn’t his first award, and it won’t be his last. Honestly it’s insane that he was given a week to live and he survived, no less that he’s a pro-bowler in the NFL. And yet, the top voted comment on that post says “one of the worst side effects of cancer would be having to put up with shit like this for the rest of your life.”

Imagine that. You’re given 7 days to live,
your entire world starts to collapse on top of you,
you spend every drop of your being fighting to stay alive, you go on to be one of the top athletes on the planet, and what bothers you the most from fighting a life threatening condition and emerging through the other side is having to “put up with shit” like being recognized for your battle.

Fuck off. Conner is a lot more than a cancer survivor, but he is a cancer survivor. He is a beacon of hope for people who need hope. He deserves this award and a thousand more, and every award he receives is another opportunity to give hope to cancer patients. Every time a commentator says “did you know he had cancer?” , you may see it as a tired narrative, but someone is lying in a hospital bed after being told they have just a few more days to live, and finding themselves actually believing they can beat it, because James Conner did.
Let the Ed Block award committee and the commentators have this. Let the Disney Spirit committee and the Stanley M. Marks courage award foundation have this. Football running back and cancer survivor James Conner of the Arizona Cardinals is teaming up with the American Red Cross and American Cancer Society to urge people to Give Blood to Give Time to help patients battling cancer as the Red Cross announces a platelet shortage.

Conner, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2015, raises awareness about the important role blood can play during intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments used to treat cancer, which can both damage the body’s ability to generate healthy blood cells and cause potentially life-threatening conditions. Blood transfusions from generous donors provide patients with critical clotting factors, proteins and antibodies needed to help them fight back.
“I believe people can help cancer patients fight back by donating blood and realizing how important that is,” Conner said. “The more you donate blood the more it gives people time. We can all do our part to make sure our loved ones have the strength and support to fight cancer by donating blood.
”Platelets, the key clotting factor in blood which are most often used by cancer patients and to treat other life-threatening illnesses and injuries, have a shelf life of just five days. This short shelf life makes it a challenge to ensure hospitals have enough platelets on hand for routine and emergency medical needs.“

Platelets play a critical role in the treatment of cancer for millions of Americans. Without a platelet transfusion, many cancer patients may not be able to receive the treatments they need,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer of the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross is grateful for the support of James Conner and the American Cancer Society to increase awareness about the meaningful difference blood donors play in helping patients beat this terrible disease.”

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, with nearly 1.9 million new cancer cases expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2021. Patients fighting cancer use more blood than patients with any other disease. About six blood products are needed every minute of every day to help someone going through cancer treatment.

To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.

Updated COVID-19 Safety Precautions
The Red Cross has updated its pandemic safety protocols in alignment with CDC and OSHA guidance. Fully vaccinated individuals including staff and blood donors will no longer need to wear masks or socially distance at Red Cross facilities or blood drives beginning May 21. Unvaccinated individuals will continue to be required to wear masks and socially distance themselves at Red Cross facilities or blood drives.

With the 105th pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Pitt running back and Erie, Pa., native James Conner.

Just 16 months prior, Conner was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma and spent his offseason dealing with cancer treatments. The 2014 ACC player of the year, Conner worked out with his Pitt teammates even as he underwent 12 chemotherapy treatments. He was on the field and in uniform for the Panthers’ season opener last fall, announcing his comeback with two touchdowns in the game. Conner finished his final college season with 1,060 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns; he added 20 receptions and four receiving touchdowns. Just before he went to the combine in Indianapolis, Conner got word that his most recent scan was clean and he continues to be cancer-free.

Conner’s battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma has been well chronicled throughout his career. Conner tore his MCL during his junior season at Pitt. While running tests, doctors discovered Conner had tumors surrounding his heart. He underwent chemotherapy, and was able to return to Pitt for a redshirt junior season. Conner was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Conner didn’t play much during his rookie season with the Steelers, but broke out in 2018. As Le’Veon Bell sat out, Conner rushed for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl.
Despite his battle with cancer, he did not consider opting out of the 2020 NFL season, according to Pryor.
James Conner received a cancer diagnosis that was so severe, he was told by a medical professional that he had about a week to live. A college student with his entire life in front of him, at the top of his game. Seven days and his life would be over. Think about that. You’re an athlete, a young adult, a healthy guy. You go to the doctor for a mundane issue, and the doctor says you may be dead before next Sunday.

He fought it and he survived.
It’s difficult to even imagine what the battle looked like. His heart was surrounded by tumors. He was pumped full of chemicals with side effects both known and unknown to give him a chance to stay alive. His challenge was to not just overcome cancer but continue to perform at the level of an elite athlete. Nobody can do that. It doesn’t even make sense. But Conner did it.
Conner visits cancer wards regularly. His life is proof that patients can overcome their diagnosis, no matter how dark. They are more that just cancer patients, they are human beings with beautiful lives and family and friends. It’s not just survival they have to look forward to, but fulfilling their hopes and dreams. Cancer won’t define them, it’s just an obstacle that they can overcome.
There was a post here recently about Conner receiving an award for fighting through adversity. No, it wasn’t his first award, and it won’t be his last. Honestly it’s insane that he was given a week to live and he survived, no less that he’s a pro-bowler in the NFL. And yet, the top voted comment on that post says “one of the worst side effects of cancer would be having to put up with shit like this for the rest of your life.”

Imagine that. You’re given 7 days to live,
your entire world starts to collapse on top of you,
you spend every drop of your being fighting to stay alive, you go on to be one of the top athletes on the planet, and what bothers you the most from fighting a life threatening condition and emerging through the other side is having to “put up with shit” like being recognized for your battle.

Fuck off. Conner is a lot more than a cancer survivor, but he is a cancer survivor. He is a beacon of hope for people who need hope. He deserves this award and a thousand more, and every award he receives is another opportunity to give hope to cancer patients. Every time a commentator says “did you know he had cancer?” , you may see it as a tired narrative, but someone is lying in a hospital bed after being told they have just a few more days to live, and finding themselves actually believing they can beat it, because James Conner did.
Let the Ed Block award committee and the commentators have this. Let the Disney Spirit committee and the Stanley M. Marks courage award foundation have this. Football running back and cancer survivor James Conner of the Arizona Cardinals is teaming up with the American Red Cross and American Cancer Society to urge people to Give Blood to Give Time to help patients battling cancer as the Red Cross announces a platelet shortage.

Conner, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2015, raises awareness about the important role blood can play during intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments used to treat cancer, which can both damage the body’s ability to generate healthy blood cells and cause potentially life-threatening conditions. Blood transfusions from generous donors provide patients with critical clotting factors, proteins and antibodies needed to help them fight back.
“I believe people can help cancer patients fight back by donating blood and realizing how important that is,” Conner said. “The more you donate blood the more it gives people time. We can all do our part to make sure our loved ones have the strength and support to fight cancer by donating blood.
”Platelets, the key clotting factor in blood which are most often used by cancer patients and to treat other life-threatening illnesses and injuries, have a shelf life of just five days. This short shelf life makes it a challenge to ensure hospitals have enough platelets on hand for routine and emergency medical needs.“

Platelets play a critical role in the treatment of cancer for millions of Americans. Without a platelet transfusion, many cancer patients may not be able to receive the treatments they need,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer of the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross is grateful for the support of James Conner and the American Cancer Society to increase awareness about the meaningful difference blood donors play in helping patients beat this terrible disease.”

“People have a choice, they don’t need your medical brown shirts showing up at their door ordering vaccinations,” she wrote on Twitter in July, using Nazi-era imagery. “You can’t force people to be part of the human experiment.”
Others still aren’t pushing back against the vaccine itself, but against a federal mandate to make them mandatory.
“President Biden’s latest and most far-reaching COVID mandate completely ignores science. Forcibly vaccinating people who already have immunity ignores medical data and is a brazen violation of Americans’ privacy rights,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tx.) said last month in a statement despite being vaccinated himself. “With these new mandates, President Biden and his administration have chosen to put politics over science and the rights of Americans once again.”

Some victims of such scams are drowned in so much paperwork to sign that unwittingly they also signed over power of attorney, allowing the scammer access to bank accounts 🙁 But the usual route is to promise a reward, then ask for fees in the process of transferring the reward. GIGO theory: Changing our thoughts from the inside out

A theory based on models. GIGO.
The GIGO Doctrine theory (described and critiqued in detail here).
Is the idea that one of the most important things we can do to grow in holiness is to guard our minds from being exposed to the wrong kinds of thoughts. What comes into our minds will eventually affect how we act and think.
I’ve spent several weeks arguing that the GIGO doctrine is only partly correct.
I’ve looked at four different passages often used to support it and tried to show that they are being misinterpreted to some degree.
Even though the GIGO teaching misinterprets all those passages, I don’t think that it is all bad. It says we need to honor God in our thoughts, not just our actions. I agree. It says that what we think affects the choices we make. I agree. It says pornography is a bad thing. I agree. It says that what we think, do or say today affects what we will think, do and say tomorrow, and it offers a practical way to use that fact to grow in holiness. That’s a great idea, one which I fully support.

So where do I disagree?
Mainly in this: the GIGO doctrine frequently leads people to focus in the wrong place in their battle against sin. It locates the enemy chiefly outside of us rather than in our own hearts.
The Bible talks about the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, but all three sources of temptation are connected. The world and the devil only succeed in pulling us down because there is something in our own hearts that answers to them. I heard a story when I was growing up about some monk in the middle ages who went into seclusion in order to become more holy, and ended up writing “I went to a monastery to escape the world, and discovered the world was in me.”
It may seem funny that I would connect the GIGO doctrine with the idea of fighting external influences, when it is all about controlling our thoughts.
What could be more internal than our thoughts? But the point is that the GIGO teaching encourages us to solve thought-life problems not by changing our thinking but by changing the input to our thinking. We need to change from the inside out: it offers us a way to work from the outside in instead.

So my concern is that people tend to use the GIGO doctrine to avoid having to confront and repent of the wrongness in their thinking. Instead of doing so, they just redouble their efforts to control all those evil media influences out there. Satan is happy to let us rail against Hollywood as long as it distracts us from dealing with our own self-deceit.
Jesus talked once about this tendency to try and control our sins from the outside. In his case he was responding to tendency to do so through the rituals of the Old Testament Law, specifically the food laws. You can find the story in Matthew 15:1-20 and Mark 7:1-23. In my next post I want to analyze Jesus’ words and see how the principle he illustrates in that passage is applicable to our view of thinking.

When you’re in a run-down area of a city you are not familiar with & you want to get out as fast as you can because you are scared & concerned about your safety, say a prayer for the kids that have to grow up there. Fifty years after the repeal of Jim Crow, many African-Americans still live in segregated ghettos in the country’s metropolitan areas. Richard Rothstein, a research associate at the Economic Policy Institute, has spent years studying the history of residential segregation in America.
“We have a myth today that the ghettos in metropolitan areas around the country are what the Supreme Court calls ‘de-facto’ — just the accident of the fact that people have not enough income to move into middle class neighborhoods or because real estate agents steered black and white families to different neighborhoods or because there was white flight,” Rothstein tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross.
“It was not the unintended effect of benign policies,” he says. “It was an explicit, racially purposeful policy that was pursued at all levels of government, and that’s the reason we have these ghettos today and we are reaping the fruits of those policies.”

On using the word “ghetto.”
One of the ways in which we forget our history is by sanitizing our language and pretending that these problems don’t exist. We have always recognized that these were “ghettos.” A ghetto is, as I define it, a neighborhood which is homogeneous and from which there are serious barriers to exit. That’s the technical definition of a ghetto.

Robert Weaver, the first African-American member of the Cabinet appointed by President Johnson as his secretary of Housing and Urban Development, described many of the policies that I’ve described today in a book he published in 1948 called The Negro Ghetto.

The Kerner Commission referred to the ghetto.
This is a term that we no longer use because we’re embarrassed to talk about it, and we need to confront our history and stop sanitizing our language and talk openly about what we’ve done as a nation and what we need to do to undo it. And we can’t talk openly if we’re going to use euphemisms instead of being explicit about what the reality is. On how the New Deal’s Public Works Administration led to the creation of segregated ghettos.
Its policy was that public housing could be used only to house people of the same race as the neighborhood in which it was located, but, in fact, most of the public housing that was built in the early years was built in integrated neighborhoods, which they razed and then built segregated public housing in those neighborhoods. So public housing created racial segregation where none existed before. That was one of the chief policies. On the Federal Housing Administration’s overtly racist policies in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s

The second policy, which was probably even more effective in segregating metropolitan areas, was the Federal Housing Administration, which financed mass production builders of subdivisions starting in the ’30s and then going on to the ’40s and ’50s in which those mass production builders, places like Levittown [New York] for example, and Nassau County in New York and in every metropolitan area in the country, the Federal Housing Administration gave builders like Levitt concessionary loans through banks because they guaranteed loans at lower interest rates for banks that the developers could use to build these subdivisions on the condition that no homes in those subdivisions be sold to African-Americans.

On real estate agents’ practice of “blockbusting,”
In the ghettos, government policy — municipal policy, for example — denied adequate services, garbage wasn’t collected frequently. African-Americans were crowded into neighborhoods in the ghetto because so much other housing was closed to them and as a result, housing prices in ghettos were much higher than similar housing in white areas. Rents were much higher than similar housing in white areas … because you had a smaller supply. It’s the basic laws of supply and demand. … So this created slum conditions.
So when African-Americans managed to break out of those slums and buy a home in a neighboring area, whites could be persuaded that slum conditions were going to be brought with them. So the real estate agents would go into these neighborhoods and try to panic white families into selling their homes cheap to the real estate agents.

They used techniques: They would recruit blacks from the ghetto to walk around the neighborhood pushing baby carriages. They would phone call families in the white area and ask for names that were stereotypically African-American. … All intended to give the impression that this was rapidly turning into another black slum.
The white families who panicked would then sell their homes to the real estate agents or the speculators at prices far below what they were worth. The speculators would then turn around and resell the homes to African-Americans at far more than they were worth because of the restricted supply, and this policy was called “blockbusting” and it was a policy that was condoned by state licensing boards throughout the country.

Yesterday, apropos of Paul Ryan’s remarks on “inner-city poverty” and a culture that “doesn’t value work,” I wrote about the policy that went into building our inner-cities and depriving whole communities of wealth and opportunity. Likewise, at MSNBC, Ned Resnikoff wrote an excellent piece on the wide income and wealth disparities between blacks and whites. “ In 1984,” he writes, “the white-to-black wealth ratio was 12-to–1…But over the next 14 years the wealth gap began to grow once again, until it had skyrocketed up to 19-to–1 in 2009.”
A large part of this, he explains, has everything to do with housing discrimination:
Disparities in homeownership are a major driver of the racial wealth gap, according to a recent study from Brandeis University. According to the authors of the report, “redlining [a form of discrimination in banking or insurance practices], discriminatory mortgage-lending practices, lack of access to credit, and lower incomes have blocked the homeownership path for African-Americans while creating and reinforcing communities segregated by race.”
In my earlier piece, I alluded to these policies and practices, but didn’t describe them. But it’s worth taking the time to do exactly that, given the extent to which they were a huge influence on the housing landscape of the United States, and key to creating the ghettos and housing projects that litter our inner-cities. Obviously, this won’t be comprehensive, so consider it an introduction to these issues.

Redlining is the practice of denying key services (like home loans and insurance) or increasing their costs for residents in a defined geographical area. In theory, this could be used against anyone. In reality, it was almost exclusively a tool to force blacks (and other minorities) into particular geographic areas. The practice began with the National Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration, as well as the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. It was this agency which created “residential security maps” for several cities to determine the safety of real estate investments in selected areas.
You should already see where this is going: Existing black neighborhoods were lined as unsafe, and thus ineligible for financing. For prospective property owner, this was terrible: Absent cash on hand, there was no way to afford a home or a business in your area. What’s more, blacks were all but barred from entering white neighborhoods, if not by restrictive racial covenants (which forbid property sales to African Americans and other minorities) then by violence and intimidation. In Chicago, for instance, anti-black riots were a regular part of public life. Here’s Arnold Hirsch, author of Making the Second Ghetto: Race and Housing in Chicago, 1940–1960:

On July 28, 1957, a crowd of 6,000 to 7,000 whites attacked 100 black picnickers who occupied a portion of the park that had previously been “reserved” for whites. Though blacks had used the park in the past, they were customarily restricted to certain portions of it. More than 500 police were needed to calm the area after two days of disturbances. On the first day alone at least forty-seven persons were injured and sixty to seventy cars stoned. Rioters spilled out of the park, attacked police officers attempting arrests, and, eventually, placed the entire area between the nearby Trumbull Park Homes and Calumet Park in turmoil. Police squadrons had to form a “flying wedge” to break through the crowd to rescue blacks besieged in the park.
In the late 1940s, he writes, there was “one racially motivated bombing or arson” every twenty days.

In short, redlining forced blacks into particular areas and then starved those areas of affordable capital. Combined with widespread job discrimination—which barred blacks from public employment and forced them into low-wage labor—you had neighborhoods that were impoverished by design.
Of course, at the same time of all of this, there was a mass migration of African Americans from the South to the industrial cities of the Midwest and Northeast. Some were poor, yes, but many were what we’d call working or lower-middle class, and more still were prospective homebuyers. In places like Chicago, white real estate agents—often with the sanction of local government—took advantage of their hope with a practice called “contract buying.” Here’s Hirsch, again:
When selling on contract, the speculator offered the home to a black purchaser for a relatively low down payment – often several hundred dollars would suffice. For bringing the home within the reach of a black purchaser, however, the speculator extracted a considerable price. In the Commission on Human Relations study, the percentage increase in the cost of the home from the speculator’s purchase price to that of the black consumer ranged from a minimum of 35% to 115%; the average increase was 73%.

This, it should be said, bears an eerie similarity to the targeted, predatory lending of the last decade. Of course, it was dramatically worse. Tenants had
no equity in their homes until the terms of the contract were fulfilled, and speculators could evict tenants for missing a payment, regardless of their history. At least one speculator, notes Hirsch, was able to retrieve more than 150% of his investment (in a year) by evicting those who missed installments and collecting successive down payments. And there was no recourse: Unlike their white counterparts, who in the 1940s and 50s, could take advantage of the G.I. Bill, blacks couldn’t obtain conventional financing or subsidized loans. Contact lending was the only option, and it amounted to large scale (and sanctioned) wealth theft.

Related to this was block-busting. Remember, many of these cities faced a housing shortage, due to the large number of black migrants. Panicked by the prospect of black neighbors—and facilitated by highways and subsidized mortgage loans—countless whites left the cities for the suburbs. They were pushed along by “block-busters”; unscrupulous realtors who encouraged blacks to move into white areas (or created the appearance of transition), sparking an exodus and driving down prices. Once completed, more respectable realtors converted the homes and apartments into multi-family dwellings, cramming large groups into row houses meant for a handful of people. “In one Oakland apartment,” writes Hirsch, “the space that was rented to one white family at $25 per month was able to house three black families at $100 per month.” Journalist Isabelle Wilkinson describes the human side of this in her
wonderful book, The Warmth of Other Suns.

Block-busting inspired tremendous violence and anti-black sentiment, especially from working-class whites, who were often outbid by blacks, but couldn’t afford suburban housing outside of the city. What’s more, it—along with contract-buying and the destruction of the tax base—helped create the perception that blacks were responsible for the deterioration of a neighborhood.
All of these tools and approaches were facilitated by the federal government and its partners at the state and local level. For decades, it was a project of Democrats and Republicans, who worked to appease a white supremacist majority, and often, shared their assumptions. This continued into the 1960s, and arguably, never stopped: Public housing projects, for instance, were placed in these segregated, depressed neighborhoods as a compromise with conservatives who opposed them outright. This, in turn, ensured concentrated poverty and all its attendant problems, as well as bad schools and poor public services. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was meant to tackle all of this, but as Nikole Hannah-Jones details for ProPublica, it saw sporadic enforcement, if that.
After a half century (or more), it’s not hard to see how we get to here from there: When you prevent a whole class of people from building wealth, accessing capital, or leaving impoverished areas, you guarantee cultural dysfunction and deep, generational poverty. On real estate agents’ practice of “blockbusting,”
In the ghettos, government policy — municipal policy, for example — denied adequate services, garbage wasn’t collected frequently. African-Americans were crowded into neighborhoods in the ghetto because so much other housing was closed to them and as a result, housing prices in ghettos were much higher than similar housing in white areas. Rents were much higher than similar housing in white areas … because you had a smaller supply. It’s the basic laws of supply and demand. … So this created slum conditions.
So when African-Americans managed to break out of those slums and buy a home in a neighboring area, whites could be persuaded that slum conditions were going to be brought with them. So the real estate agents would go into these neighborhoods and try to panic white families into selling their homes cheap to the real estate agents.

They used techniques: They would recruit blacks from the ghetto to walk around the neighborhood pushing baby carriages. They would phone call families in the white area and ask for names that were stereotypically African-American. … All intended to give the impression that this was rapidly turning into another black slum.
The white families who panicked would then sell their homes to the real estate agents or the speculators at prices far below what they were worth. The speculators would then turn around and resell the homes to African-Americans at far more than they were worth because of the restricted supply, and this policy was called “blockbusting” and it was a policy that was condoned by state licensing boards throughout the country.

Yesterday, apropos of Paul Ryan’s remarks on “inner-city poverty” and a culture that “doesn’t value work,” I wrote about the policy that went into building our inner-cities and depriving whole communities of wealth and opportunity. Likewise, at MSNBC, Ned Resnikoff wrote an excellent piece on the wide income and wealth disparities between blacks and whites. “ In 1984,” he writes, “the white-to-black wealth ratio was 12-to–1…But over the next 14 years the wealth gap began to grow once again, until it had skyrocketed up to 19-to–1 in 2009.”
A large part of this, he explains, has everything to do with housing discrimination:
Disparities in homeownership are a major driver of the racial wealth gap, according to a recent study from Brandeis University. According to the authors of the report, “redlining [a form of discrimination in banking or insurance practices], discriminatory mortgage-lending practices, lack of access to credit, and lower incomes have blocked the homeownership path for African-Americans while creating and reinforcing communities segregated by race.”
In my earlier piece, I alluded to these policies and practices, but didn’t describe them. But it’s worth taking the time to do exactly that, given the extent to which they were a huge influence on the housing landscape of the United States, and key to creating the ghettos and housing projects that litter our inner-cities. Obviously, this won’t be comprehensive, so consider it an introduction to these issues.

Redlining is the practice of denying key services (like home loans and insurance) or increasing their costs for residents in a defined geographical area. In theory, this could be used against anyone. In reality, it was almost exclusively a tool to force blacks (and other minorities) into particular geographic areas. The practice began with the National Housing Act of 1934, which established the Federal Housing Administration, as well as the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. It was this agency which created “residential security maps” for several cities to determine the safety of real estate investments in selected areas.
You should already see where this is going: Existing black neighborhoods were lined as unsafe, and thus ineligible for financing. For prospective property owner, this was terrible: Absent cash on hand, there was no way to afford a home or a business in your area. What’s more, blacks were all but barred from entering white neighborhoods, if not by restrictive racial covenants (which forbid property sales to African Americans and other minorities) then by violence and intimidation. In Chicago, for instance, anti-black riots were a regular part of public life. Here’s Arnold Hirsch, author of Making the Second Ghetto: Race and Housing in Chicago, 1940–1960:

On July 28, 1957, a crowd of 6,000 to 7,000 whites attacked 100 black picnickers who occupied a portion of the park that had previously been “reserved” for whites. Though blacks had used the park in the past, they were customarily restricted to certain portions of it. More than 500 police were needed to calm the area after two days of disturbances. On the first day alone at least forty-seven persons were injured and sixty to seventy cars stoned. Rioters spilled out of the park, attacked police officers attempting arrests, and, eventually, placed the entire area between the nearby Trumbull Park Homes and Calumet Park in turmoil. Police squadrons had to form a “flying wedge” to break through the crowd to rescue blacks besieged in the park.
In the late 1940s, he writes, there was “one racially motivated bombing or arson” every twenty days.

In short, redlining forced blacks into particular areas and then starved those areas of affordable capital. Combined with widespread job discrimination—which barred blacks from public employment and forced them into low-wage labor—you had neighborhoods that were impoverished by design.
Of course, at the same time of all of this, there was a mass migration of African Americans from the South to the industrial cities of the Midwest and Northeast. Some were poor, yes, but many were what we’d call working or lower-middle class, and more still were prospective homebuyers. In places like Chicago, white real estate agents—often with the sanction of local government—took advantage of their hope with a practice called “contract buying.” Here’s Hirsch, again:
When selling on contract, the speculator offered the home to a black purchaser for a relatively low down payment – often several hundred dollars would suffice. For bringing the home within the reach of a black purchaser, however, the speculator extracted a considerable price. In the Commission on Human Relations study, the percentage increase in the cost of the home from the speculator’s purchase price to that of the black consumer ranged from a minimum of 35% to 115%; the average increase was 73%.

This, it should be said, bears an eerie similarity to the targeted, predatory lending of the last decade. Of course, it was dramatically worse. Tenants had
no equity in their homes until the terms of the contract were fulfilled, and speculators could evict tenants for missing a payment, regardless of their history. At least one speculator, notes Hirsch, was able to retrieve more than 150% of his investment (in a year) by evicting those who missed installments and collecting successive down payments. And there was no recourse: Unlike their white counterparts, who in the 1940s and 50s, could take advantage of the G.I. Bill, blacks couldn’t obtain conventional financing or subsidized loans. Contact lending was the only option, and it amounted to large scale (and sanctioned) wealth theft.

Related to this was block-busting. Remember, many of these cities faced a housing shortage, due to the large number of black migrants. Panicked by the prospect of black neighbors—and facilitated by highways and subsidized mortgage loans—countless whites left the cities for the suburbs. They were pushed along by “block-busters”; unscrupulous realtors who encouraged blacks to move into white areas (or created the appearance of transition), sparking an exodus and driving down prices. Once completed, more respectable realtors converted the homes and apartments into multi-family dwellings, cramming large groups into row houses meant for a handful of people. “In one Oakland apartment,” writes Hirsch, “the space that was rented to one white family at $25 per month was able to house three black families at $100 per month.” Journalist Isabelle Wilkinson describes the human side of this in her
wonderful book, The Warmth of Other Suns.

Block-busting inspired tremendous violence and anti-black sentiment, especially from working-class whites, who were often outbid by blacks, but couldn’t afford suburban housing outside of the city. What’s more, it—along with contract-buying and the destruction of the tax base—helped create the perception that blacks were responsible for the deterioration of a neighborhood.
All of these tools and approaches were facilitated by the federal government and its partners at the state and local level. For decades, it was a project of Democrats and Republicans, who worked to appease a white supremacist majority, and often, shared their assumptions. This continued into the 1960s, and arguably, never stopped: Public housing projects, for instance, were placed in these segregated, depressed neighborhoods as a compromise with conservatives who opposed them outright. This, in turn, ensured concentrated poverty and all its attendant problems, as well as bad schools and poor public services. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was meant to tackle all of this, but as Nikole Hannah-Jones details for ProPublica, it saw sporadic enforcement, if that.

US inflation reached a 30-year high in October as rising energy costs, supply shortages and increased consumer demand drove up prices.

Over the past 12 months prices have risen 6.2%, according to a labor department report released on Wednesday. The rise was the largest since December 1990. Inflation increased by 0.9% in October, faster than September’s 0.4% and above economists’ expectations. The news comes as the Biden administration and the Federal Reserve have tried to downplay rising costs, arguing they are a temporary phenomena driven by Covid-19’s unprecedented impact on the global supply chain.

The increase was “broad-based, with increases in the indexes for energy, shelter, food, used cars and trucks, and new vehicles among the larger contributors”, the labor department said. “The energy index rose 4.8% over the month, as the gasoline index increased 6.1% and the other major energy component indexes also rose. The food index increased 0.9% as the index for food at home rose 1%.”Last week Fed chair Jerome Powell warned that inflation had been “longer lasting than anticipated”.
Powell said the Fed still expected recent price rises to be “transitory” but added that it was “very difficult to predict the persistence of supply constraints or their effects on inflation”. The latest reports show prices rising across the board with the cost of clothes, car parts, shelter, energy, food and lawn mowers all rising.

The energy index rose 30% over the last 12 months, a situation that is already proving difficult for poorer Americans already struggling to pay utility bills. The food index has increased 5.3% over the year. Part of the latest surge in prices was down to factors that may prove short-lived, economics forecaster Capital Economics wrote in a note to investors. US fuel prices surged in October but have since begun to fall and shortages of microprocessors and other parts are still contributing to a lack of inventory for car sellers that is driving up prices.
But Capital Economics also warned it was difficult to tell when these inflationary pressures would stabilize. “The bottom line is that, while it remains difficult to predict how far or for how long the various ‘transitory’ factors will boost inflation, there is increasing evidence that inflationary pressures are broadening out, underlining that inflation will remain elevated for much longer than Fed officials expect,” they wrote. Omarova has already been slammed by top GOP senators over her Marxist thesis paper which she has yet to share with the Banking Committee. She wrote the thesis, titled “Karl Marx’s Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution,” while studying at Moscow State University in Russia decades ago.
“At the end of the day, these are people’s lives, people are going to lose their jobs because she’s going to support policies that are there to drive them out of work,” AAF Founder Thomas Jones told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview.

“It’s people who are not going to be able to send their kids to college, who will not be able to make their mortgage payment because Saule Omarova has a classical Marxist view where she wants the government to run all sectors of the economy and part of that is implementing the Green New Deal,” he continued. “And you can only do that by destroying the oil and gas industry.”
In addition to her comments on bankrupting the fossil fuel industry, Omarova suggested that withdrawing investment from oil and gas firms would be beneficial, during a virtual roundtable hosted by the Jain Family Institute in May.
“So, the way we basically get rid of those carbon financiers is we starve them of their sources of capital,” she argued.
Omarova added that the government should stop “greenwashing,” or forwarding policies that only appear climate-friendly on the surface but are still harmful to the environment, and that leaders need to begin facing “difficult choices” on climate change policy.
During the same roundtable, she also criticized West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin for pushing back on left wing policies. Manchin “is supposed to be on the Democratic side,” she continued. All 50 Republican senators are expected to vote against confirming Omarova, Axios reported Sunday.

Three moderate Democrats reportedly shared their concerns with her nomination directly to the White House, multiple people familiar with Axios.
“I just don’t understand how the White House is going to explain this to the Jon Tester’s or the Joe Manchin’s of the world, that she wants to bankrupt employers who employ a significant number of the constituents in their state,” Jones told the DCNF. “I think it’s unconscionable.”

These sick people think they are going to save the world by engineering an American suicide drama front and center on the world stage. Actually, I don’t think saving the world is as much their agenda as putting their academic theses into practice so the ruins of our “shining city” can have their names scrawled on the street corners. I have no qualms with finding and perfecting non-fossil fuels and energy sources. But I also think it should be a gradual transition. Problem is they want to do it in 4 months. I understand they want to go green but you cannot get rid of coal and natural gas in 4 months and have nothing to replace it with. I also find it funny that they want to get rid of coal. You need coal to make electricity. They think you turn on a switch and “bingo” electricity. You need coal (fossil fuel) to make electricity. If you get rid of fossil fuel that leaves you with wind and solar. How many houses and cars are we going to be able to fuel with what we have now?

We oppose them because they are inefficient and not up to the demand that will be required for their use.

It is insanity to rely on technology we know is insufficient to meet our needs. These green zealots want us to jump off a cliff and hope that there will be something there to break our fall. Like everything else in this country, the policies democrats want to cram down our throats are doomed to failure and actually do more harm than good, but they don’t care because they are incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions. Their only concern is that they have enacted their impossibly irresponsible policies.
These people are not as smart as they think they are. They actually are mindless drones parroting a dogma that defies truth. When you cannot follow logical thought to its ultimate end because you are so religiously married to the impossible doctrine of progressivism, you have forfeited any right to govern or make any decision on behalf of your fellow citizens. When you will jettison facts and science to cling to some pie in the sky theory, you are unworthy of leadership. We cannot let the insane make any decisions for the rest of us regardless how sanctimonious and confident they are in their beliefs.

I think maybe it’s time to let the Greenies show their true colors. I guess we need one nasty winter season to wake up the Democrats who vote for these kinds of people. I know a lot of them! President Joe Biden’s nominee for a key Treasury Department role admitted that oil, natural gas and coal firms need to go bankrupt to prevent climate change, a resurfaced video showed.
“Here what I’m thinking about is primarily the coal and oil and gas industry. A lot of the smaller players in that industry are going to probably go bankrupt in short order, at least we want them to go bankrupt if we want to tackle climate change,” Saule Omarova — who the Senate is considering to lead the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency — remarked in a clip uncovered Tuesday by the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a conservative research group.
The comments were originally made during a March talk Omarova gave as part of the Jain Family Institute’s “Social Wealth Seminar” series.
Omarova has already been slammed by top GOP senators over her Marxist thesis paper which she has yet to share with the Banking Committee. She wrote the thesis, titled “Karl Marx’s Economic Analysis and the Theory of Revolution,” while studying at Moscow State University in Russia decades ago.
“At the end of the day, these are people’s lives, people are going to lose their jobs because she’s going to support policies that are there to drive them out of work,” AAF Founder Thomas Jones told the Daily Caller News Foundation in an interview.

“It’s people who are not going to be able to send their kids to college, who will not be able to make their mortgage payment because Saule Omarova has a classical Marxist view where she wants the government to run all sectors of the economy and part of that is implementing the Green New Deal,” he continued. “And you can only do that by destroying the oil and gas industry.”
In addition to her comments on bankrupting the fossil fuel industry, Omarova suggested that withdrawing investment from oil and gas firms would be beneficial, during a virtual roundtable hosted by the Jain Family Institute in May.
“So, the way we basically get rid of those carbon financiers is we starve them of their sources of capital,” she argued.
Omarova added that the government should stop “greenwashing,” or forwarding policies that only appear climate-friendly on the surface but are still harmful to the environment, and that leaders need to begin facing “difficult choices” on climate change policy.
During the same roundtable, she also criticized West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin for pushing back on left wing policies. Manchin “is supposed to be on the Democratic side,” she continued. All 50 Republican senators are expected to vote against confirming Omarova, Axios reported Sunday.

Three moderate Democrats reportedly shared their concerns with her nomination directly to the White House, multiple people familiar with Axios.
“I just don’t understand how the White House is going to explain this to the Jon Tester’s or the Joe Manchin’s of the world, that she wants to bankrupt employers who employ a significant number of the constituents in their state,” Jones told the DCNF. “I think it’s unconscionable.”

These sick people think they are going to save the world by engineering an American suicide drama front and center on the world stage. Actually, I don’t think saving the world is as much their agenda as putting their academic theses into practice so the ruins of our “shining city” can have their names scrawled on the street corners. I have no qualms with finding and perfecting non-fossil fuels and energy sources. But I also think it should be a gradual transition. Problem is they want to do it in 4 months. I understand they want to go green but you cannot get rid of coal and natural gas in 4 months and have nothing to replace it with. I also find it funny that they want to get rid of coal. You need coal to make electricity. They think you turn on a switch and “bingo” electricity. You need coal (fossil fuel) to make electricity. If you get rid of fossil fuel that leaves you with wind and solar. How many houses and cars are we going to be able to fuel with what we have now?

We oppose them because they are inefficient and not up to the demand that will be required for their use.

When you cannot follow logical thought to its ultimate end because you are so religiously married to the impossible doctrine of progressivism, you have forfeited any right to govern or make any decision on behalf of your fellow citizens. When you will jettison facts and science to cling to some pie in the sky theory, you are unworthy of leadership. Thousands of solar panels and wind turbines are what’s truly hazardous. As usual, the Marxist have it backwards. Couple questions for the green idiots. It takes me a couple minutes to fuel my car with gasoline. How many hours will it take with electricity?

Americans will be able to see if companies like Exxon will fight for their survival, or demonstrate that their top brass is complicit in the Davos scheme. It is now clear that the objective of the hoax is to achieve ‘world government’, and further that this new world government will embody all of the aspects of radical socialism. Total equity will improve quality of life by using money extracted from rich capitalists. But Margaret Thatcher exposed the fatal flaw in their plan, explaining the problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of other people’s money.
