A new survey for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) finds that 63 percent, including 72 percent of swing voters, said they oppose “paying $450,000 for ‘psychological trauma’ to every illegal immigrant who was separated from their child when illegally entering the United States.” Meanwhile, just 29 percent of voters support the payouts. A plan included in Biden’s filibuster-proof $1.75 trillion “Build Back Better Act” reconciliation package would give $80 billion to illegal aliens with children over the course of a decade via an expanded child tax credit. For as long as activism has existed, environmentalists have rallied around demonstrations, protests, and “raising awareness.” In that tradition, since COP26 began, climate activists have been protesting, arguing that actions taken by world leaders at the summit are not enough.
Last week, Greta Thunberg gave a speech in which she said leadership is not going to come from inside COP26 because all world leaders do is “blah blah blah.” Instead, she said climate leadership would come from activists like her. While passionate, this display of vexation toward COP26, in comparison to past international climate summits, COP26 has been impressively action-oriented and fruitful. In light of this, protests and demands come off as petulant, out of touch, and alarmist.
From the very first Earth Day in 1970, young leaders such as Thunberg have been instrumental in making climate change a mainstream issue, but the time for yelling at politicians and calling for an all-or-nothing approach to climate change is over. The real work now should be pushing for solutions, and this work is held back by the naïve tactics imposed by protesters.
Preventing participants from entering COP26 does not inspire action. At its best, it can raise awareness for a cause. At its worst, it turns would-be allies away and delays the progress protesters so desperately claim to desire. Assuming in good faith that such protests are for the purpose of awareness, it’s important to note that protesting for awareness of climate change in 2021 is nonsensical.
World leaders are well aware that the climate is changing. Instead of vaguely calling for transformative action, climate activists should have clear policy objections.
COP26 comes after a recent iteration of directionless environmental activism: Protesters near London blocked traffic during rush hour to “raise awareness” that climate change is happening. This brand of protesting, in which everyday people who may be sympathetic to the cause are inconvenienced, doesn’t win more support. Instead, the climate movement is seen as hysterical and impractical, rather than a solutions-oriented movement.
These activists aren’t convincing anyone; they’re pissing people off. What’s more is that the activists in question didn’t carry signs or share a cohesive message. If awareness was truly the goal, it would stand to reason that there would be clarity of message — whatever it is we should be aware of. The supposed shock factor of stopping traffic isn’t enough to convince irritated drivers that they should be scared of climate change.
The cherry on top is that this kind of protest is inherently bad for the environment. Stopping traffic means that cars are idling, which results in more carbon emissions than if commuters were able to get home normally. Protesting environmental degradation by increasing emissions or carelessly polluting our environment is truly the height of irony. This isn’t unusual for climate protests either. Protesters have been known to leave their signs behind, littering all in the name of climate change. When the Extinction Rebellion dumped cow manure in front of the White House on Earth Day this year, city employees had to clean up the mess.
One group of protesters certainly cannot fix climate change, nor is anyone expecting them to, but there are more constructive directions in which they could direct their energy. Especially at an event such as COP26, activists should be demonstrating how everyday folks can help our environment in addition to the international talks that are occurring. Planting trees in a local park or cleaning up trash from the sidewalk not only has an immediate effect for the community but shows members of the community that they’re serious about improving the environment rather than just committed to causing a scene.
The goal of climate activists should be to convince the broader public that their solutions are not only the best to tackle the problem but also have secondary benefits for the economy and people’s everyday lives. At COP26, climate activists have a responsibility to be realistic and measured with their demands.

In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, singer Linda Ronstadt discusses how progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) has forced her to retire and how she has come to accept her diagnosis. Ronstadt shares how the disorder, which was initially diagnosed as Parkinson’s, has caused her to lose motor control of her vocal cords, leading to what would be her last show in 2009. She officially retired from her decades-long singing career four years later. She also talks about how she has learned to accept her diagnosis, her familial connections to the disease, and the ways she copes with its symptoms. “I find creative new ways to do things,” she says in the interview. “Eating is hard … I’ve had to relearn how to eat. You could carve a new brain map if you’re patient and willing to do that, but it’s hard.” Ronstadt is also the focus of a recent CNN Films documentary, “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice”, that reflects on her career and journey with PSP. The “Blue Bayou” singer announced her retirement from music in 2011, and in 2013, she shared the reason why: she had developed a rare brain disease called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). A form of Parkinsonism that is distinct from Parkinson’s itself, PSP is a motor disorder that causes problems with walking, balance, eye movements, swallowing, and fine motor coordination. Ronstadt says her first symptom was a sudden inability to sing. Ronstadt said that when her first symptom—a sudden inability to sing—appeared in 2000, her “entire career flashed” before her eyes. “I remembered every show I’d ever done,” she said. Indeed, the first sign that her health was failing did go on to end her storied career. In a 2020 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, the singer recalled the moment she suspected she was sick: “I couldn’t hear the top end of my voice. I couldn’t hear the part that I used to get in tune,” she told Cooper. “My throat would clutch up. It would just be like I had a cramp or something.” Looking back on the “five or six years” immediately following her first symptoms, she says she continued to appear on stage, relying heavily on her bands and backup singers to disguise the problem. “I didn’t know why I couldn’t sing — all I knew was that it was muscular, or mechanical. Then, when I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, I was finally given the reason. I now understand that no one can sing with Parkinson’s disease. No matter how hard you try. She was originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Though she would later be diagnosed with PSP, Ronstadt was originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Both assessments came as a surprise. “I was expecting [the doctor] was going to say I had a pinched nerve and they could fix it. And he said, ‘Well, I think you might have Parkinson’s disease,’ and I was totally shocked. It took him about a year after that to come to the diagnosis and then took a little bit longer to come to supranuclear palsy,” Ronstadt told CNN. Unfortunately, while some Parkinson’s patients respond well to certain medications and therapies, Ronstadt says PSP has no such courses of treatment. “I have a form of Parkinsonism that doesn’t respond to standard Parkinson’s meds, so there’s no treatment for what I have,” she explained to AARP.
She lived with symptoms for years before seeing a doctor.
Ronstadt says that her rare diagnosis is an everyday struggle.
“Everything becomes a challenge. Brushing your teeth, taking a shower,” she shared with CNN. “Eating is hard … I’ve had to relearn how to eat,” she added. However, she says she’s continually adapting to her new circumstances. “I find creative new ways to do things. I’m like a toddler,” Ronstadt said. When asked by Cooper what advice she would give to others facing Parkinson’s or a similar diagnosis, Ronstadt didn’t miss a beat. “Acceptance,” she said. Freezing can limit household and community mobility, increase risk of falling and contribute to reduced socialization and quality of life.

That was the first time they aligned like this since the Middle Ages. According to Forbes, the two planets will look like a “double planet” and provide an extraordinary amount of light. The last time these two planets aligned like this was on March 4, 1226, according to astronomer Patrick Hartigan at Rice University. “Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to be to one another. You’d have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky,” Hartigan said in a statement.
The spectacular sighting will be viewable from anywhere on earth. “The planets will appear low in the western sky for about an hour after sunset as viewed from the northern hemisphere, and though they’ll be closest on December 21, you can look each evening that week. Although the sight will be sinking towards the horizon, it will be bright enough to be viewed at twilight. All you need is an unobstructed view to the southwest, and to look to the southwest from about 45 minutes after sunset where you are,” Forbes states. To catch it in the night sky, you’ll need a regular telescope at a minimum. But for a brighter view, an astronomer’s telescope or a university telescope feed would work better. Alignments like these, called “conjunctions” are not necessarily rare, but some of them are impossibly rare or only come around once in hundreds of years. Astronomers speculate that the Star of David written off in Matthew was an exceptionally rare triple conjunction between Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus. One such astronomer was Johannes Kepler, one of the greatest astronomers of all time.

Are we in the Age of Aquarius?
Well, that depends on who you ask, as there is much debate over when the Age of Aquarius begins or if it has already started.
For those that believe it has already started, January 13, 1996, December 21, 2012, and December 21, 2020, are all dates that I have seen mentioned.
For those that believe it is yet to start, it’s looking like March 20, 2597, which is still centuries away.
So, who is right? How do we know?
Let’s first take a look at how Ages are commonly determined.
The Astrological Ages: Every year around March 20-21, we experience the Equinox, a time of equal hours of night and day. The constellation the Sun is in at the time of the March Equinox is said to determine the Age we are in, with each Age lasting about 2,160 years. Now, before we go any further, it is important to clarify that Western Astrology determines that the March Equinox is the start of the Aries Season. This is how western Astrology birth charts and horoscopes are calculated. They are fixed, making the start of the Aries Season always at the March Equinox.
But, if we are actually looking at where the Sun is based on the constellations (not western zodiacs), we would see that the Sun currently sits in the sign of Pisces at the time of the March Equinox. This method of calculation, which is based on astronomy, would currently put us in the Age of Pisces. The Sun’s position at the Equinox is slowly shifting and when it reaches the sign of Aquarius, that is when some believe we will be in the Age of Aquarius.
Using the current mapping of the constellations by astronomers, this would put the start of the Age of Aquarius in the year 2597. However, here is where it gets complicated and a little confusing. Astrology and astronomy are not always aligned. The constellations are also not all the same size, so not all Ages would neatly fit into the 2,160-year cycle mapped out by the ancients.
Rather than looking to astronomy, some astrologers prefer to use different methods, including the tracking of certain stars and planets, to determine the Ages. These calculations show that we are either very close to or already in the Age of Aquarius. As there is no definitive date that the Age of Aquarius begins, the only tool we have to go on is our intuition and looking to the themes of the Age of Aquarius vs. The Age of Pisces.
The Age of Pisces!!! This 2,160 year period is considered a time of alchemy, where we are realizing our potential to create. The narrative- if you can dream it, you can do it, is very much connected to the Age of Pisces. During this time, we have used the resources of the Earth and our imaginations to build and create all sorts of things. The Age of Pisces is strongly connected to our beliefs. All of the major organized religions of the world were founded under the Age of Pisces. Religion has helped to create a sense of belonging, faith, and spiritual understanding, but it has also created severe division, hatred, and manipulation.
Pisces is represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions. These fish are said to represent the duality in the Oneness. During the Age of Pisces, our attention has very much been drawn to the duality of life. While there has been some recognition of Oneness, there have also been many lost in the idea of duality- good and evil, wrong or right. These have all been measures we have used to govern and run society and most religions. Under the Age of Pisces, where our beliefs are strong, we can become more susceptible to brainwashing, fear-mongering, and manipulation. These are all things we have seen being used against us by society, governments, the media, and so on.
Before the Age of Pisces, we would have been in the Age of Aries, a time of independence and fighting for what we believe in. The Age of Pisces has perhaps allowed us to realize a greater love, to be more compassionate, to attune to the spiritual sides of life, and to realize there is more to life than we can truly understand. Hopefully, when the Age of Pisces does end, we would have all learned that our imagination is limitless, that duality is real but also an illusion, and that love and compassion make for a better world.
The Age of Aquarius: During this period, we move out of the idea of religion into a more open understanding of spirituality. Rather than looking to a spiritual leader, we instead look within to our own inner guidance. We are also less likely to search for spiritual understanding and more likely to trust science and technology. Robots, artificial intelligence, and microchips are all things associated with the Age of Aquarius. This is truly the digital age, and a time to advance our skills and knowledge using technology.
Along with being a time of rapid technological developments, the Age of Aquarius is also a time of community. Rather than looking to “big things out there” for guidance and support, there is a shift in creating the resources and support that is needed on a more accessible, community-based level. Aquarian energy is all about humanitarian efforts, so a greater push in this direction is expected. While the Age of Pisces taught us love and compassion, the Age of Aquarius will help us to put those emotions into practical action.
Aquarian energy is very much centered around what is good for the collective and the whole, rather than the individual. It allows us to see that none of us are really thriving until all of us are thriving. Under this energy, we may have to be mindful of getting sucked into a “group-think” mentality or overly compromising our own thoughts and beliefs for the sake of the greater good. As you can see, both Ages have their light and their dark to work with. After the Age of Aquarius, we will move into the Age of Capricorn, traveling backward through the zodiac until we return to Aries. At this point, we would have completed what’s known as the Great Year.
At the end of the day, does it really matter which Age we are in? Each Age comes with its own benefits and downsides. Each Age has something to teach and show us. Each Age is important for our growth and evolution here on the planet. Perhaps the starting of a new Age is not something that can be defined by one particular date. Perhaps it is a slow transition or build into the Age. Perhaps there are many markers along the way that help us to transition and slowly integrate into the new energies that await us.
Or perhaps, on an even deeper level, the astrological Age we are in is all about our state of mind. Maybe on a psychic level, it is only when we are “ready” that the Age will begin. I personally feel we are in a transition period, ebbing and flowing between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius. I don’t know when we will officially root ourselves in the Age of Aquarius, but maybe that is not important for where we are going.

InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones aired multiple segments linking the deep state to everything from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s resignation to Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with the Russian lawyer. Reports have surfaced detailing that the Trump administration is considering a global network of private spies to counter supposed deep state enemies. The so-called “deep state,” sometimes also known as “shadow government,” is often used to describe the bureaucracies of the military and spy agencies and their top secret inner-workings. The roots of the deep state’s creation date back to the end of World War II and the expansion of what President Dwight Eisenhower deemed the “military-industrial complex.” Former congressional staffer Mike Lofgren is the author of Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of Shadow Government and offered up the following definition of the deep state on Bill Moyers. “(The Deep State) is a hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department. I also include the Department of the Treasury because of its jurisdiction over financial flows, its enforcement of international sanctions and its organic symbiosis with Wall Street.” Lofgren also includes FISA courts and powerful federal courts such as the Eastern District of Virginia, which has issued subpoenas to Trump associates Paul Manafort and Flynn in connection with the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia, and the Southern District of Manhattan, which has the ability to investigate Trump’s numerous conflicts of interests on Wall Street and once included ousted federal prosecutor Preet Bharara.
The deep state as understood by Lofgren and other national security experts appears to be on an entirely different planet than the conspiratorial deep state of Breitbart and Alex Jones lore. “When I wrote the Deep State I began to realize from all these interpretations that when you create a concept and send it out into the world it’s like sending a virus out,” Lofgren said at a panel before the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in June. “It infects other people. It mutates, and it comes back unrecognizable.” Lofgren dismissed outside interpretations of the deep state by various conservative media icons, including a scenario posed by Pat Buchanan in which pro-Trump and anti-Trump factions of the federal government are at war with each other. The actual deep state is far more banal, Lofgren argues. Far from being a secret “conspiratorial cabal,” the real deep state, he argues, operates in broad daylight, in the form of thousands of government workers going about their daily duty, and has done so far before Trump ever stepped foot into office. Breitbart’s definition of deep state encompasses not just an identity but any behavior that can be considered “anti-Trump,” especially leaks, and includes the mainstream media and other factions of the federal government, such as EPA employees who have refused to comply with Trump’s orders.
One Breitbart headline from May trumpeted, “Jack Welch urges Trump to go to war against the Deep State.” It was an overly generous interpretation of comments made by the former CEO of General Electric in a CNBC interview, in which Welch criticized Trump’s management of the bureaucracy and firing of James Comey.
From Breitbart: The term “deep state” has been used to refer to deliberate leaks designed to undermine the president, but also to the willing collusion of elements of the mainstream media, the latent distrust and suspected opposition of elements of the intelligence services, but also the willing resistance of certain career civil servants in the agencies charged with carrying President Trump’s directions to fruition.
Trump and the deep state: One could argue that if any American president had a reason to fear backlash from the top-secret factions of his government, it’s Trump. His distrust of the NSA, FBI, CIA, and other intelligence agencies is unique among American presidents. He likened intelligence officials to Nazis and dismissed the FBI investigation into his campaign’s Russian ties as a “witch hunt.”

Former CIA case officer and executive director for Council for the National Interest Phil Giraldi maintains there is some truth to a partisan faction within the deep state. “I think when we talk about the intelligence community, it’s important to analyze what that means,” Giraldi said in an interview with the Tom Woods Show podcast. “The intelligence community is basically 20,000 people like me who are essentially in a certain circumstance where they perform a job of a certain type, and they do their jobs. And they’re loyal to whatever government is in place. But at the top of these organizations, you have people that are heavily politicized. And I would say, ‘Where is the deep state?’ or ‘Where is the establishment?” in the intelligence community, it’s these guys at the top. These guys were particularly miffed by Trump’s comments, plus these guys lost their status when Trump was elected. So they have an agenda.”
Deep state terminology: Jason Royce Lindsey, the author of The Concealment of the State, told the Daily Dot via email that study of deep state terminology has its roots in authoritarian regimes like Egypt and Turkey, where the military-security component is strong. Politicians exist in the “shallow state” and military and security services exist in the “deep state” and are less apparent to the general public. According to Lindsey, the embrace of the deep state concept by Trump supporters gives them someone to blame for the administration’s setbacks. “The narrative that someone inside the government is to blame is a false one,” Lindsey wrote,“but an easier explanation than laying out the real political complexity of the United States at this time and explaining how the various parts of government have to reach some consensus for actual legislation to happen.”
The numerous definitions of deep state and concept’s enthusiastic embrace by pro-Trump conspiracy theorists make its serious discussion almost impossible. Other experts dismiss the idea of a deep state altogether.
The Daily Dot reached out to Pulitzer Prize-winning national security historian Tim Weiner to ask him to define what he understood a deep state to mean. “There is no Deep State,” he wrote to the Daily Dot in a Facebook message.
When asked to explain the many Trump supporters who are convinced of the deep state’s plans to overthrow Trump, Weiner had a one-line response: “They are deluded.”

In February 2020, Trump cabinet member and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, when asked if a deep state working against President Trump exists, stated that it was “absolutely, 100% true”.[28] In an article for The New York Review of Books, Michael Tomasky quoted Newt Gingrich as using the term in the context of the Robert Mueller investigation in July 2018, quoting Gingrich stating: “[Mueller is] … the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency”.[29] Gingrich then added to the statement that “the brazen redefinition of Mueller’s task tells you how arrogant the deep state is and how confident it is it can get away with anything”.[29] Stephen Walt, professor of international relations at Harvard University, has written: “There’s no secret conspiracy or deep state running U.S. foreign policy; to the extent that there is a bipartisan foreign-policy elite, it is hiding in plain sight.”[30]
The term has also been used in comments on the “deep state”-like influence allegedly wielded by career military officers such as H. R. McMaster, John Kelly and James Mattis in the Trump administration. The anthropologist C. August Elliott described this state of affairs as the emergence of a “shallow state”: “an America where public servants now function as tugboats guiding the President’s very leaky ship through the shallows and away from a potential shipwreck”.[31] On September 5, 2018, The New York Times published an anonymous op-ed titled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” written by a “senior official in the Trump Administration”. Inflation = Higher taxes
States with the highest COVID death rates during the Delta wave (updated through Nov. 4). This tragic list is dominated by states where Republican politicians have pandered to right-wing resistance to vaccination and masking requirements at the expense of their constituents.
States in the north tend to get a surge of cases in the colder months and states in the south tend to get surges in the warmer months. This has to do with more people staying indoors because of the harsh climate. Very little to do with politics.
The map above shows the county level and vote share results of the 2020 US Presidential Election. The darker the blue the more a county went for Biden and the darker the red the more the county went for Donald Trump. You can see how it compares to the 2016 map here.
While overall the map doesn’t look too dissimilar from 2016, the results in many ways couldn’t be more different. First and foremost Biden won whereas Clinton lost. Moreover, as of December 2nd, 2020 Biden had received 15 million more votes than Clinton and 18 million more votes than Trump did in 2016. However, Trump also did better in 2020 than 2016 winning 11 million more votes than he did 4 years earlier, and 8 million more than Clinton did that year. The difference of course is primarily down to the enormous increase in voter turnout 66.9% in 2020 vs just 55.7% in 2016. This means Biden won 306 electoral college votes compared to 232 for Trump, an almost complete switch from 2016 where he won 304 electoral college votes to 227 for Clinton (there were 7 faithless electors in 2016). However, in terms of geography the pattern from 2016 largely remained the same. Biden won the majority of the people, Trump won the majority of the land. According to NPR: “In 2020, just 77 counties total have flipped so far, and Biden won 59 of them.” And according to the Brookings Institute: “Biden-voting counties equal 70% of America’s economy.” Overall, at the time of writing Biden has won 477 counties, Trump has won 2,497 counties with 110 still outstanding. This means Biden will have won the presidency with the fewest counties (Obama won 689 in 2012), but also the largest number of votes in history. This is part of a long-term trend where the Democrats are more and more concentrated geographically. This would not be a problem for them if the presidency were decided by popular vote. But the Electoral College favor small states at the expense of big ones, which means they are facing an increasingly difficult structural challenge. This is a problem both for presidential elections and for hopes of regaining control in the Senate. The COVID-19 pandemic is fading as a top concern of voters and being replaced by the economy and rising inflation, a troubling sign for President Joe Biden and Democrats heading into the midterm elections.
Just 12% of adults rated health issues like the coronavirus as a top national priority, down from 20% in February, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found for October.
Meanwhile, two-thirds of the country, including the majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents, say that ‘inflation is a very big concern for them.’The job market is also being closely watched as the poll found that 73% of adults want political leaders to focus on jobs and economic growth.
Democrats, meanwhile, are showing signs of panic and asking Biden to deal with this quality of life issues affecting voters.
“We were so willing to take seriously a global pandemic, but we’re not willing to say, ‘Yeah, inflation is a problem, and supply chain is a problem, and we don’t have enough workers in our workforce,’ Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia told The New York Times. ‘We gloss over that and only like to admit to problems in spaces we dominate.’
She also said Biden needs to remind voters why voters put him in the Oval Office. ‘Nobody elected him to be F.D.R., they elected him to be normal and stop the chaos,’ she said, referring to the sweeping net of social programs Biden is seeking to make into law.

The president also touts his Build Back Better package, which he argues multiple Nobel Prize winning economists say would reduce inflation.
But his signature package of social safety net programs has yet to pass Congress and his aides concede that Americans would not see its benefits until next year. Moderate Democrats have raised concerns about its overall price tag, which Biden has cut nearly in half to $1.75 trillion as he tries to get it through the legislative branch.
Rep. Kathleen Rice, a Democrat from New York, told the Times she fears that Biden’s message isn’t resonating with voters. ‘I don’t understand some of my more progressive colleagues saying last night now shows us that what we need to do is get both of these bills done and shove even more progressive stuff in,’ she said. ‘What we’re talking about is not resonating with voters.’
And voters are starting to show their impatience.
On Tuesday, Virginia voters elected a Republican, Glenn Youngkin, as governor, in a state Biden carried by 10 points last year. And, in New Jersey, incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy barely held on for a second term in a state Biden carried by 16 points and where Democrats have a 1 million voter registration advantage.
The president offered a litany of excuses in a press conference on Wednesday, including the fact that his Build Back Better agenda hasn’t passed Congress and Donald Trump supporters.
‘Look, I just think people are at a point, and it is understandable, where there’s a whole lot of confusion. Everything from are you ever going to get COVID under control or are my kids going to be in school, are they going to be able to stay in school to whether or not I’m going to get a tax break that allows me to be able to pay for the needs of my kids and my family,’ he said.
‘People are upset and uncertain about a lot of things – from COVID to school to jobs to a whole range of things, and the cost of a gallon of gasoline,’ the president said.
Thursday’s Reuters/Ipsos poll shows the political landscape is dramatically changing for Biden, who came into office with a promise to end the COVID pandemic and bring back stability after the chaos of the Trump years.
Last November, a majority of voters – 61% – said COVID-19 was ‘an important factor’ in determining their choice for president, and those voters backed Biden with 52% of the vote. And, in the last election, only 33% rated the economy a top concern.
Additionally the president’s approval rating has been on the decline – another worrisome sign.
Biden entered office with the approval of 55% of the country but has seen his popularity decline: 42% of adults say they approve of Biden’s job performance in an NBC News poll that was out Monday.
That poll also found 71% say the country is headed in the wrong direction – a sign of trouble ahead for the political party in power. The right track/wrong track question has proven a reliable forecaster of voter attitudes headed into the voting booth.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online from Oct. 18-22 and gathered responses from 4,430 adults including 2,001 Democrats, 1,591 Republicans and 465 independents. The margin of error is between 2 and 5 percentage points.

Steep increases in input prices, like rapidly escalating drug prices and labor costs, can undermine hospitals’ efforts to reduce the cost of care.
Prices for drugs purchased directly from manufacturers increased at nearly twice the rate of retail drugs over the past decade.
Additionally, meeting the unique burden of requirements of over 1,000 insurers, including extensive government regulations, results in tremendous administrative and cost burden to hospitals.
COVID-19 has heightened a number of these challenges, as hospitals faced steep financial losses estimated at $54 billion in net income in 2021, with more than a third of hospitals expected to have negative operating margins through year’s end.
Hospitals also experienced dramatic increases in expenses because of COVID-19’s care complexity, supply chain and labor shortages, travel nurses, personal protective equipment (PPE), vaccine testing and distribution.
A recent analysis of workforce data found:
Staffing shortages have cost hospitals approximately $24 billion so far.
Hospitals have also spent an additional $3 billion in acquiring PPE for the additional staff.
Hospitals’ use of contract temporary labor is up 132% for full-time and 131% for part-time staff.

In a year that has been filled with so many mysteries already, I have another very odd one to share with you. Emergency rooms are filled to overflowing all over America, and nobody can seem to explain why this is happening. Right now, the number of new COVID cases in the United States each day is less than half of what it was just a couple of months ago. That is really good news, and many believe that this is a sign that the pandemic is fading. Let us hope that is true. With fewer people catching the virus, you would think that would mean that our emergency rooms should be emptying out, but the opposite is actually happening. All across the country, emergency rooms are absolutely packed, and in many cases we are seeing seriously ill patients being cared for in the hallways because all of the ER rooms are already full.
Inside the emergency department at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, staff members are struggling to care for patients showing up much sicker than they’ve ever seen.
Tiffani Dusang, the ER’s nursing director, practically vibrates with pent-up anxiety, looking at patients lying on a long line of stretchers pushed up against the beige walls of the hospital hallways. “It’s hard to watch,” she said in a warm Texas twang.
But there’s nothing she can do. The ER’s 72 rooms are already filled.
Can anyone explain why this is happening?
If the number of COVID cases was starting to spike again, it would make sense for emergency rooms to be overflowing.
Months of treatment delays have exacerbated chronic conditions and worsened symptoms. Doctors and nurses say the severity of illness ranges widely and includes abdominal pain, respiratory problems, blood clots, heart conditions and suicide attempts, among other conditions.

Now, late student Blake Barklage’s high school is mourning his untimely death. As 6ABC in Philly reports, the tragedy occurred at La Salle College High School in Montgomery County, Pa.

Jeff Deist: We’re speaking in mid-September, and President Biden just announced executive orders mandating vaccines for many employers. As a former Soviet citizen, what do you make of this?
Yuri Maltsev: – Bing video That’s awful. In the United States, fascism comes in the very strange form of an elderly dementia patient. Usually fascists are charismatic leaders, look at Hitler or Mussolini, but this one, what he’s doing is just unbelievable. He is a socialist, definitely, that he is mandating the private sector what they should do, what they shouldn’t do. Karl Marx in the manifesto of the communist party, he defined socialism and communism as abolition of private property and that private property can be abolished overnight, like what happened during the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. But it can also take a gradual kind of process and that’s what is happening right now in the United States. Private property is becoming like having a title to wetlands. You have private property, but you cannot do anything with it.
D: Biden brings to mind another kindly old man, Mikhail Gorbachev, with whom you worked in the late eighties as a Soviet labor economist. In your introduction to the Requiem for Marx book, you go in depth about how Gorbachev managed to absolutely snow the Western media and snow George Bush senior.
M: Yes, he absolutely did. He was portrayed as a great liberator, however, he was a Communist. On another hand, we should give him some credit because he was talking about socialism and giving it a human face, which nobody understood at the time.
There is this joke that James Bond was sent to Moscow to find out what’s happening there under Gorbachev and he goes to the bakery and there is no bread, and he writes in a little notebook “No bread”; he goes to the butcher shop, no meat, and writes “No meat.” There was a KGB officer following him and the officer looked over his shoulder and said, “A year ago, you would be shot for doing that.” And Bond then writes “No bullets anymore.” When there were no bullets, people stopped working, because under socialism, the only way to work is under a threat to your life or to the life of your loved ones, because there is absolutely no incentive to do anything. And that’s what Mr. Gorbachev did not understand.
In the beginning of his reign, Gorbachev sounded confused. For example, he was saying that central planning actually works, the problem is we never had a good plan, and so on. That definitely didn’t show him as he knew what he was doing. But definitely, he played some positive role in destroying that evil empire.
Today, we have Mr. Biden, who is building a new evil empire. I think that his vaccine mandate speech is just telling us that he is right now on a warpath. He is desperately looking for enemies and who those enemies can be. So, he picked unvaccinated people as his enemies, because he lost the war in Afghanistan so dramatically. He completely screwed up the evacuation and now he needs to attract the attention of the masses to something else. That’s what I’m thinking is going on.
And they are also, I think, trying the water, to see if they can get away with this mandated vaccination, with forced vaccination, with dragging people into vaccination centers, which reminds me of forced abortions in China, then that will be the ultimate goal: your loss of freedom. If you remember John Locke, his major question was who owns you. Do you own yourself? If you do, you are a free man, and if somebody else owns you, you’re a slave. If you don’t own your body, then who does? The government acts as if it owns your body and knows better what to put in it. And now, if they will forcibly vaccinate us that would be the end of whatever we think we are living in and would be the beginning of slavery.
D: Let’s continue this Biden versus Gorbachev comparison, because I like it. You write about glasnost and perestroika being basically fraudulent cronyist schemes in practice, not at all what the Western media reported. You quote Gorbachev saying, “What we want is a planned, regulated socialist market.” That’s essentially what the World Bank types advocate today.
M: Absolutely. We must have this economy which is run by the government, not by the private sector. Everything Mr. Biden has been doing since his inauguration is heading in that direction, more regulations for everything, for industry. People don’t like his predecessor, Mr. Trump, but under him regulations were being removed, 20 percent of them, but Biden has restored everything that was removed. His vice president, she’s just not only a socialist, but kind of a Stalinist. Look at her speeches, most recently in California. This is a very sad time that we are living through, but the people inflicted it on themselves. I don’t know if elections were fair or not, but I think it’s very simple if you are voting for a socialist or you are voting for a capitalist.
D: You mentioned that your time working with Gorbachev convinces you he didn’t know any economics at all. He was completely illiterate on the subject. I suspect that’s equally true of Biden.
M: Yes, yes. In his fifty years in government his working record is just atrocious. When he was the chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Senate, it was unbelievable to listen to him. I don’t know, however, whether he is stupid or he is evil, and I think both. He’s a power-hungry kind of person as well as the people around him.
D: You left the Soviet Union and came to the United States in 1989. A lot of Soviet expatriates in the US became neocons or cold warriors, but you managed to avoid that.
M: Yes, because neoconservatism is just another side of Trotskyism. That we should impose our will on other people against their will. You see what is happening, how we trap people in Vietnam or in Afghanistan or in Iraq or in Syria, trying to start wars which we do not intend to win. It’s to make some people happy and richer and impose all kinds of left-wing social theories on them. It’s like imposing democracy—these kinds of things cannot be done from above or from the outside of the country.
D: In the eighties and nineties, especially, Conservatism Inc. loved nothing more than a Soviet defector willing to denounce the USSR. The Buckley It right purged the Old Right on the grounds we had to defeat the Soviets above all, so the Cold War justified accepting a bigger government at home.
M: It definitely was a threat. I would agree with that part, but from another hand, how did we oppose the Soviets? The CIA provoked the revolution in Hungary, we didn’t support those people as we had promised, so many of them were murdered including the very reformist prime minister, Mr. Nagy, and about three hundred thousand Hungarians fled. We did the same with Czechoslovakia and the war in Vietnam was the same thing. So that’s a problem that we have, that we are engaging in wars, which are designed only to feed some people, to feed the military-industrial complex of which President Eisenhower was telling us back in 1961.
D: As a new arrival in the early 1990s, did you think America was generally capitalist and free at the time or did you already sense there were deep problems here?
M: I worked, if you can call it work, for the federal government in Washington, DC, at the United States Institute of Peace, which is still there. It’s a congressional think tank. It’s huge right now. I could see there were deep problems.
D: They have an enormous building by the Lincoln Memorial. I wonder what their budget is relative to the Mises Institute?
M: Oh, probably several hundred times more if not thousands. And they also built, just maybe four or five years ago, a huge campus in southeastern Washington, DC, just unbelievable.
D: Apparently there’s no more peace than when they started.
M: No, they’ll never be shut down. And for me, what was amazing was that I was awarded this very prestigious position. I became a fellow of the United States . . . the full title was even more feudal, something like Senator Jennings Fellow of the United States Congress in Peace. I thought that maybe they will study peace. My neighbor with an office on the right was Eugene Rostow. Eugene Rostow was possibly the most prominent warmonger in United States history and he almost single-handedly started the Vietnam War. The chairwoman of the board was Elspeth Rostow, who was his wife. This formed kind of a Rostow dictatorship. There were generals and the like, rather a nursing home for the neoconservatives. The worst thing was not that they were funding these people who didn’t need the stipends because they were already rich, but they were dispensing tens of millions of dollars. Now they are dispensing hundreds of millions of dollars, to poison our academia, to provide so-called grants to study conflict resolution. And how you can resolve conflicts, by accusing everybody of racism or paying the left-wing academia to develop critical race theory and other stuff like this?
D: At this point, in the early nineties, you had already discovered Austrian economics.
M: Well, I was leaning toward Austrian economics since my days in the Soviet Union. When I was a third-year student at Moscow State University I was given a book by Hayek, The Road to Serfdom, and at that time I could be punished anywhere from eight to ten years of imprisonment, just for having the book.
D: Just for possessing it?
M: Just for possessing it. And the person who gave it to me would get fifty years, because he would be accused of disseminating anti-Soviet slander. That was the so-called Article 57 of the Penal Code of the USSR. This is even an innocent book. But it was on the KGB forbidden list, as well as Solzhenitsyn and Orwell.
Because of Hayek’s influence, I changed my major. Instead of studying history and social science, I began to study economic history and history of economic thought. It was at this point that I received a letter through the Lenin’s Library, now the Russian State Library, that since I was engaged in a critique of the vulgar bourgeois political economy, I should be given access to the contents of the library. How can you criticize something without knowing what it is? So I got real access. While there I read a lot of other stuff, as well. You go to a marked room and you sign a pledge that you’ll never tell anyone about what you read there. The unfortunate thing is at that time I didn’t know about Murray Rothbard or Ludwig von Mises and so I was insatiably reading Hayek.
When I came to the United States I was invited to the Shevchenko Jamestown Foundation, which is a very interesting think tank, kind of like the world defectors’ club. They would not pay me anything, but they were very nice in providing me with a computer and office space and a telephone, and while there I wrote an article on perestroika for The Freeman.
I was invited to the Mises Institute, to teach at Mises University, at that time at Stanford University, and then I met Murray Rothbard and we became very good friends. He became my real mentor. I met a lot of great people like Tom DiLorenzo, Walter Block, Bob Higgs, and many, many others. It was not a conversion moment, because I was already converted, but I remember Murray, he took my interview from me and he titled that interview “Mises from Moscow.” He was very enthusiastic about the future of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in finding the path to freedom.
I think it was 1990, the Mises Institute organized a conference in Washington, DC, to honor Gottfried Haberler. Haberler was a great Austrian economist, but then he turned more mainstream. He began to teach at Harvard and he was not associated with the Institute at all and the Institute also didn’t like him for his mainstream leaning. I knew him rather well because I had lunch with him every Wednesday in Washington. I advised Murray to lure him back where he belonged, and so the Mises Institute put on a wonderful conference in Washington, DC, and Haberler addressed this conference.
Attending the Washington conference was a delegation of twelve Lithuanian businesspeople and politicians who came to the United States right after Lithuania became an independent country. They were all enthralled, and today we have a very strong Austrian economics kind of school in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Free Market Institute is doing a great job in promoting Austrian ideas and some are very visible in the Seimas, which is the Lithuanian parliament. It was an interesting time because nobody knew what was happening. Murray wrote quite a lot on the economics of transition and he had this wonderful slogan: land to the peasants, and factories to the workers, and bureaus to bureaucrats, that was his approach. That was his major message to them. And he praised the Baltic states because they were ahead of the other former Soviet Republics and they are ahead today in promoting freedom.
D: We have the whole history of the twentieth century to see the failure of the Soviet Union. You lived it. But as you’ve pointed out, Mises predicted all of this in 1920, without the benefit of hindsight, in his essay “Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth.” What an achievement.
M: True, absolutely. I read Ludwig Mises’s “Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth” and his book Socialism only when I came to the United States, and I was honored to write an introduction to “Economic Calculation” published by the Mises Institute. A lot of things just became really clear.
When you live in the Soviet Union, especially if you are an economist, you understand that the system does not work. You understand that the prices are all phony, that the prices are made up, that they’re being ignored. But after reading Socialism by Mises, then it all becomes crystal clear. It’s like processing film when the image is already there, it is only after developing the film that the image becomes clear. That was the role of Hayek for me with The Road to Serfdom. And so it was an interesting time.
In the Soviet Union at this time, they came up with the idea of the 500 Days Program. This is how long it would take to make the transition from a socialist slavery to economic freedom. My point was why five hundred days? In five hundred days, you cannot do anything. If you make a transition like this, you should do it immediately in one fell swoop. And sure enough, while I was writing this, Margaret Thatcher made an interesting comment. She said something like, “if we in the United Kingdom would decide to move from left-hand driving to right-hand driving and do it in five hundred days, that would be havoc on the road.” So, it is with all economic reforms. I believe strongly, and Murray Rothbard was very supportive in this, that a gradual transition is transition to the third world only. You can either make a transition right away or don’t even try to do it.
D: David Gordon and Gary North also wrote about Marx the man, in your collection of essays. Marx was not necessarily that bright. He wasn’t that accomplished. Gary North tells us Friedrich Engels was a lot smarter and ambitious. Marx lived a fairly pampered and subsidized life, and had far more money than the average Soviet worker. And yet this apparent mediocrity seems to have enduring influence. Why?
M: Because he provides a very good argument for so-called intellectuals to grab power. Because the whole idea of Marxism is that the proletariat, the great masses, are oppressed. But what should they do? They should follow the people with the vision, the professional revolutionaries. And who would be better for that than the intellectuals. So, that’s the point. Hayek is also saying it in his wonderful essay “Why Intellectuals Love Socialism.” Marx, he was a very power-hungry individual. He never had real power, but from another hand, his writing is about power, how to get power. And today he is popular for what reason?
There is another side of Marxism. It’s not only proletariat and bourgeoisie, workers and capitalists, but it is also oppressors and oppressed. Because if you read Marx, especially Das Kapital, the twenty-third, twenty-fourth chapters, I still remember all this stuff, he’s writing that the whole of human history was a fight between oppressors and oppressed, an influence that would be like slaves and slave owners and feudal lords and peasants and now we have workers and whatnot. That’s easy for the so-called intellectuals of today to put whomever they want, to put any kind of group they believe is a victimized group, and to present them as oppressed. This victimization agenda will be taken up by the intellectuals of the Left. It is important for them to have something to point at, take the so-called environmental crisis, that’s another invented crisis that we have, and also race issues. And these two issues, they believe, can destroy capitalism, destroy the United States, destroy the society that we live in, and provide them with unlimited power, because that’s what it is: if you control energy, for example, you control culture, then you are in charge of everything. Education, today, I’m sorry to say, but I think we are losing this cultural war to these people because they control the mass media, control Hollywood, control the production of culture.
D: Let’s continue with that thought. There’s this concept of cultural Marxism, where the focus on economic class shifted to identity politics because the economic arguments weren’t working. The US middle class, the union workers, weren’t buying it. So the Left shifted its focus. Today we have a lot of loose terms like “woke” and “SJW” and “PC” to describe this phenomenon. As someone who teaches young people on campus, how much have things changed since you arrived in the US?
M: It’s so sad because when I began to teach, and I began to teach almost immediately when I came to the United States, I was teaching first as an adjunct professor at George Mason University on the Arlington campus and then I moved to Wisconsin. I am now in academia for thirty-two years. And at that time, students were very curious, they were way to the right of the faculty. The faculty always was, at least the faculty that I dealt with, very much to the left of center. They had an agenda to reproduce themselves, because that means that left-wing faculty will only hire left-wing faculty, and now they are a majority. We have very few really free market academics, but a lot of socialists and radical socialists and communists and democratic socialists, so-called, which is an oxymoron. Mr. Bernie Sanders visited my college, Carthage College, and many faculty were sitting there from three in the morning because they were afraid that they will not get in to meet the great leader.
D: Were students camping out overnight as well?
M: Some, yes, those that are already brainwashed.
D: And presumably very few kids at Carthage College are in any way oppressed.
M: [Laughs] True. Except when they are looking for parking in the morning.
D: I want to clarify: Do you think the students in some of this country’s liberal arts schools are actually to the left of their faculty?
M: I would say not very many, but there are some. There are some activists who are just fanatics, who became fanatics because they were screwed up in high school and then they came to Carthage. We have faculty who reinforce their views. I’m not saying all faculty. We have some mild socialists also. We have even on our campus some people who are still on the side of freedom, but not many, the majority is not. What is going on today with this masquerade, if you will look at what the faculty says in their blogs, for instance, “Yesterday I saw a student who was sipping coffee without a mask and he was sipping coffee very slowly, because he enjoyed not wearing a mask.” I can’t imagine that a professor is writing that.
D: One thing that’s changed a lot in the US since you arrived is secularization. There is far less religious observance in the United States today than thirty years ago. Rothbard’s essay in your Requiem for Marx collection compares Marxist theory to the return of the messiah in Christian theology, Marxism will put an end to history and establish a new heaven and a new earth. The establishment of communism marks an end point to human history, a final perfected state of mankind. So the secularization of America is a necessary Marxist goal.
M: True, yes. Murray wrote “The Religious Eschatology of Marx.” Eschatology, that’s the end of history. Marx hated religion, he called it opium of the people, and in the Soviet Union alone they murdered over a million clerics of all religions. I was just reading a gruesome historical article. In Odessa, for example, they were putting boiling lead into the Christians, saying that this is a communion for you. And they were hanging monks and nuns and priests from belfries. Why such atrocities? Because it’s obvious that if you are a believer, you believe in God, no matter what denomination or religion you are, then you don’t have space in your mind for Marx and Lenin and Stalin to be gods. That would be a very unchristian or very non-Islamic or very non-Jewish thing, to believe that there is a god, in the Kremlin or in the White House or somewhere else. That’s why they needed to clean out the place and why religion was prohibited until 1942.
In 1942, the Soviet Union legalized the Russian Orthodox Church. For what reason? Because there were about 3 million defections from the Soviet Army over to the Germans. Stalin was afraid that the whole thing would fall apart without that. And most would believe that Stalin and others were kind of the antichrist. That’s one thing, to destroy religion, then next is the family. When families are destroyed then civil society is destroyed and then you’re naked before them. Then you don’t have any support mechanisms. I’m not a religious person myself, but religion is a very important social institution, because it provides a lot of social support for people.
D: Did the Soviets view religion as a competitor with the state for people’s loyalty?
M: Yes and no because some, for example, the Russian Orthodox Church were just a state institution under Stalin and his successors run mostly by the KGB.
D: So the state co-opts the church like it co-opts other institutions.
M: Yes. Under Gorbachev, when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics fell apart on the glorious Christmas Eve of 1991, the state collapsed as we know it. If you look at the Russian Orthodox Church today, they are blessing the Russian aggression against the Ukrainians, against others, they’re holding masses to support the Russian troops. They’re blessing tanks and rockets. There are some denominations that are not really statist denominations. There are some Protestant denominations in Russia which believe that you don’t need any intermediaries between you and the God. And that brought the idea even to John Locke that we are all equal before the Lord.
D: Let’s talk about academic freedom. A well-known philosophy professor at Portland State University, Peter Boghossian, resigned yesterday over harassment he’s endured from faculty and the students. Do you worry about your own academic freedom?
M: The only thing I like from Marx’s quotes is that we don’t have anything to lose except chains on our feet. And so, I’m not worried, because I just fight back. I am fighting. Fortunately for me, I was tenured twenty-five years ago and that’s why I’m saying that if you give up on something, then they will take over everything. And that was the greatest message from Solzhenitsyn in the gulag, don’t give up. They survived and they were even respected by their jailers, by the prison guards. Besides that, I would say all my classes are full and I have waitlists! I would say that the great change came with Ron Paul. Especially when Ron Paul was very active, many students were his followers and he was the best ambassador of ideas of liberty on campuses. We definitely need leaders like him for students, to be seen as role models.

Brown Cloud over China The skies over Beijing turned dark and black in the middle of the day on Thursday, as the Communist Party came together for an annual meeting. Chen Beingzhong, a life-long Beijing resident described it in one report to the Epoch Times “as an alarm from god.” Brown clouds have been seen all over the world, including the US , Europe, India and China. Earlier, our focus was on South Asia; so we called these clouds the Asian Brown Cloud. Several Indian scientists and politicians criticized this appellation as politically-motivated.
US President Joe Biden has criticized the leaders of China and Russia for not turning up to the COP26 climate summit. In a speech on Tuesday night, Mr. Biden said climate was “a gigantic issue” and China “walked away” – adding it was the “same thing with Russia and Putin”. Neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese leader Xi Jinping are at the summit. Both countries however have sent delegations to the talks, which are due to run for two weeks until 14 November. China is the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, followed by the US. Russia is the fifth largest after the EU and India. More than 120 leaders turned up at the conference in Scotland’s largest city. Countries have already announced major deals, including a global pledge to slash methane levels by 2030 as well as to end and reverse deforestation by the same year. Mr Biden made his comments when asked about the role that other countries – including China, Russia and Saudi Arabia – have played in talks so far. “The fact that China is trying to assert, understandably, a new role in the world as a world leader – not showing up, come on,” Mr. Biden said, adding that Xi Jinping’s absence was “a big mistake”.
He said the same about Mr. Putin, saying that Russia’s wilderness is burning and their president “stays mum” about the issue. Mr. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov gave no reason why Mr. Putin would not attend when they announced the decision in October, although he said climate change was an “important” priority for Russia. Also in October officials warned UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson that China’s President Xi Jinping was not expected to attend. It is thought that President Xi has not left China since early 2020.

I believe a portion of what we hear and read is exaggerated but I do know of some otherwise healthy people in their 40’s that passed without other underlying health issues to change their voting laws. And the gop challenged none until after the election. Governors and judges can’t change election law. Only legislatures. It was still fixable after the election if legislatures acted and they didn’t. Blackwater identified the training of domestic police as a potentially lucrative part of its business.

By the time President Obama announced the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, PMSCs [private military and security companies] were in line to collect billions of dollars in contracts for at least another five years. They included SOC, Inc. (the firm with the extensive training site in Nevada, whose contract to safeguard the Baghdad embassy would bring in nearly $1 billion), Triple Canopy (a five-year $1.53 billion contract for embassy security), ArmorGroup, Control Risks Group, DynCorp, Erinys, and Aegis. And as always, there were many smaller firms working as subcontractors, though these were not listed on the government’s Baghdad Embassy website. What was noted on the site, however, was a rather big caveat: “The U.S. government assumes no responsibility for the professional ability or integrity of the persons or firms whose names appear on the list.” These contracts hardly resembled the feeding frenzy of the Iraq PMSCs surfacing in Iraq, some without track records and many in search of subcontracts. There were, in fact, enough unknown firms with unfamiliar names popping up in Baghdad that some underwriters at Lloyd’s of London were uneasy. Insurers typically demanded that these companies produce what were called security protocols from the military if the companies wanted insurance for operating in unstable environments.
The Iraqi contracts would cushion some of the top firms during the industry’s transition from wartime. And while the gold rush in Iraq was ending, the pursuit for the next rush of markets had already begun. Where exactly were these markets? Wherever instability threatened development; wherever the military commitments of states exceeded their capacities; wherever preventive war was a ruling principle; wherever governments were viewed as incapable of supplying defense and security fast enough in times of sudden conflict; wherever maritime terrorists threatened the shipping industry; and wherever kings, dictators, or presidents felt endangered by mass protests, such as the nations involved in what became known as the Arab Spring in 2011.
To be sure, there was plenty of work for PMSCs during the Arab Spring, especially protecting companies trying to operate in the midst of the political unrest. For example, in Bahrain, where Aegis had an office in Manama, the capital, the firm, according to its own release, implemented a “crisis management plan” for an unnamed multinational energy company and evacuated 100 or more people. A few months after the protests abated, the United Nations released a study showing that the use of “mercenaries in armed conflict” had vastly increased in recent years. Examples included Arab countries during the spring protests. Muammar Gaddafi, it noted, had brought in hired guns from Eastern Europe and from African nations to fight pro democracy protests. Although leaders in the PMSC industry argued that the hired guns in the Arab Spring were not the companies that formed the backbone of their industry, there were clearly some mainstream companies acting as brokers of combatants deployed to stop the protests. The U.N. stressed that the presence of private forces, whether employed by companies or self-employed, was growing worldwide without enough control to stop “an onslaught of human rights problems.” *** In America, too, business was picking up for PMSCs. The idea of preventive war at home was seeping into the collective consciousness of Americans, echoing that familiar rationale for using private-sector security when governments appeared unable to come through with mandates to safeguard its citizens. Case in point: the Mexican-American border. If unstable environments stimulated the market for PMSCs, then the Mexican-American border was a candidate for another bonanza. Capitalizing on such potential in the summer of 2011 was the firm International Security Agency, or ISA. With headquarters in Houston, ISA employed former Special Forces members as well as former police, and told the press that it had done work in thirty-three nations. Its rationale for security work was, as the Texas Tribunedescribed it, “If the government cannot protect its citizens, it’s up to the individual.” In August 2011, ISA announced that it had received the “required licenses to operate” in McAllen, Texas, on the Mexican border. At the time, ISA President Jerry Brumley told the press: “I love my country. If I were king or emperor of America, I would do exactly what Ronald Reagan did. [Reagan said,] ‘You know what? You hurt an American citizen—I don’t care where you are—and I am coming after you.’ And we’re in America.”
In its presentation to the McAllen business community that summer, ISA showed a newsreel clip of a car chase along the U.S. border that ended with one car in the river. Another clip displayed the devastation following the explosion of car bombs on the Mexican side of the border, and an animated rendering of Glenn Beck telling the audience that drug dealers were tantamount to terrorists and that the government would not and could not protect Americans from the violence they caused. In its corporate slide show, the company then informed potential clients about the expertise of its employees, who were trained in military skills and who, as the ISA president implied, had aggressive rules of engagement.
The presentation harkened back to Iraq in 2004 or 2005. “Our practice,” said Brumley, “is if someone raises a weapon to me and I feel threatened, with my life or the life of my client, I am taking action. I am not going to lose an American because my rules of engagement say ‘Well, you know, they have to shoot at you [first].’” The Texas Tribune commented, “[The presentation] demonstrates what a military-style ‘cadre’ is, complete with a photograph of a camouflaged soldier raising a weapon and taking aim.” ISA, according to its website, required its applicants to be “former military with at least four years of service and an honorable discharge, a federal law or civilian law enforcement officer with at least two years of service, a security officer with six years of experience or a personal protection agent with more than three years of experience.” Pay scales ranged from $200 a day per agent, to $2,500 a day promotional material, was to stop drug-cartel-instigated violence in the United States before it started—the Wild West version of preventive war.
When asked whether it was appropriate to hire private security firms to guard the border and what his concerns for accountability might be, Texas Governor Rick Perry, then a candidate for the Republican nomination for president, said, through his deputy press secretary: “Let’s be clear here: It is the federal government’s responsibility to protect Americans by securing the international border between the U.S. and Mexico. Since the federal government is not fulfilling that responsibility, it is unfortunate but not surprising that the citizens living along the U.S.-Mexico border feel so unsafe on their own property that they could be looking to hire personal security.” Quelling fears along the Mexican border promised to become a profitable business, and it extended beyond the realm of guarding homes, individuals, and businesses. There was money to be made, for example, in the crackdown on immigration. PMSCs could run and sometimes own detention centers. This was a high-growth market. In 2005, there were 280,000 detentions and by 2011 there were 400,000. The demand was such that the close proximity to the Mexican border of some training sites—for example, Playas, only forty miles from the border—meant they could easily be used as future detention centers. After all, immigration enforcement had become another growing market for PMSCs, especially in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
By 2011, for example, private contractors controlled half of all immigration detention beds in the United States. Although it was a niche market, it was often identified by analysts as one source of potential growth for the PMSC industry. Detention attracted the large multinational firms known for their vast offerings of what were once government services. G4S, with more than 600,000 employees in 125 countries, was one. G4S owned both the British ArmorGroup and the large American security company Wackenhut. It had been one of the corporate participants in the 2008 meetings at Montreux. As part of its immigration work, it was under contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to escort illegal border-crossers back to Mexico. But despite the Border Patrol work and immigration-related armed security, PMSCs remained nearly invisible to the American public. That they would continue to have a presence and an influence in Iraq or Afghanistan would have surprised most Americans. But that they would play a bigger role back home, within U.S. borders, would have been more surprising. And yet they were establishing a presence on Main Street. By the fall of 2011, there were dozens of municipalities, counties, and townships in the United States that had hired a private military and security company to train their police forces—often Blackwater. Big cities on the list included Atlanta, Washington, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
There was no law prohibiting the training of police in military methods. Blackwater figured that out, thus identifying the training of domestic police as a potentially lucrative part of its business, and then cornering the market. In the beginning, the market consisted mainly of the Department of Homeland Security, which was in a hurry to improve local police protection in the event of a terror attack. It was quick to utilize Blackwater’s police-training services, funding and supporting police departments nationwide to employ Blackwater. In addition, some municipalities were considering contracting PMSCs for special duties, such as patrolling a city’s most dangerous neighborhoods. The theory was that this saved the city’s proof vests and uniforms. The difference between a police officer trained to “keep the peace” and a soldier was quite easy to identify. A policeman was legally required to protect and to serve the citizens of the state, to assume innocence unless there was a reasonable suspicion of illegal activity, and to use weapons against a citizen only as a last resort. A soldier was trained to identify enemies and if necessary to kill them while protecting any non enemies in the vicinity. “I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat” was their creed. And although most policemen trained by a private military company would remain dedicated to their oaths to serve and protect the public, there was the possibility of the exception.
Evidence of potential problems bubbled up in autumn 2011 when the Occupy Wall Street movement inspired demonstrations in U.S. cities and towns and on university campuses, as people protested the greed of what they called “the 1 percent” of the U.S. populace. Although there was no direct involvement of PMSCs, as had been the case in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina when Homeland Security brought in Blackwater, there were clear signs of the militarization trend in policing. The protests began on September 17 in New York with the occupation of a park near Wall Street. These were nonviolent political protesters using their First Amendment rights to express their views, thus inspiring some journalists to refer to “the American Autumn” following “the Arab Spring.” But in early October things began to change. In their black full-battle uniforms armed with assault rifles, sometimes even M4s like the ones the military used in Iraq and Afghanistan, some police began to act the way they looked.
In Oakland, for example, police kicked and attacked demonstrators, including war veterans, shooting them in the face with teargas canisters. An ex-Marine who had spent two tours of duty in Iraq was hit so hard in the head with a police projectile—while he was texting—that he was taken to a hospital in critical condition and for nearly two months lost his ability to speak. As if in a flashback scene from the disaster at Nisour Square, Oakland police threw a “flashbang grenade” at the people who ran to help the wounded vet. In November, a former Washington State peace officer who had earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart while serving in Iraq teamed up with a lawyer from Arlington, Virginia, to warn in the Atlanticabout the consequences of bringing military-style training to domestic law enforcement: “When police officers are dressed like soldiers, armed like soldiers, and trained like soldiers, it’s not surprising that they are beginning to act like soldiers.”
It was a potentially shameful situation for the United States, especially when the U.N., the watchdog of human rights violations across the globe, turned its gaze on the nation that considered itself the world’s icon of freedom and human rights. In early December, Frank La Rue, the U.N.’s special envoy for protecting free expression, drafted a memo to the U.S. government demanding to know why it was not protecting the rights of the Occupy Wall Street protesters. From his view, as long as they were peaceful nonviolent demonstrators occupying public spaces, the government had an obligation to protect their rights and not to exert excessive force against them. What was at risk, La Rue wrote, was America’s credibility as a model democracy. In late 2011, another affront to democracy was taking shape as the government was outsourcing jobs to design, maintain, and operate cyber capabilities for national security. This included devising defenses against cyberattacks, and even orchestrating offensive cyber tactics. In what some government officials were calling the cyber contractor complex, there was a shift in 2011 from internal defense of the infrastructure to offensive strategies, including cybersurveillance sometimes aimed at American citizens—a startling reality that would soon be exposed to the world by former private contractor Edward Snowden. Equally unsettling was the fact that a few of the new surveillance systems operated by companies under contract to the United States had customers other than the United States.
For the industry, it meant yet another market to inspire “the incubation of new and more powerful capabilities from within the industry [of PMSCs],” as a British journalist wrote. At least cybersecurity was not armed security and it was not on the list of usual services offered by most PMSCs—not yet anyhow.
