On the 20-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, today’s college-aged students were too young to remember what happened with many having been born after the attacks. Florida students interviewed by Campus Reform said that educators teaching lessons on the terrorist attacks should avoid discussing “American exceptionalism” and “focus on America’s faults.”

Campus Reform reporter Ophelie Jacobson went to the University of Florida to ask students how they thought the deadly 9/11 terrorist attacks should be taught in a classroom.
Students said that educators should “avoid placing blame,” and avoid talking about “American exceptionalism” while teaching about 9/11. Students also suggested that teachers “focus on America’s faults.”
“I think that the 9/11 attacks should be taught in a way that doesn’t really target, like, more like who did it, but, like, more like how we can, like, move forward, and, like, different, like, healing processes that we can go through to, like, make everything, like, you know, good again,” another said.
A third student suggested the curriculum should “avoid placing blame,” because getting into the “specific factors that were at play” will risk people engaging in “Islamophobia,” as well as “ideas of American exceptionalism.”
The students generally did not seem to agree with the concept of American exceptionalism.
“I don’t agree with the idea of American exceptionalism. It’s rooted in a lot of, like, colonialist and imperialist notions of, like, how we should treat other people,” one said.
“I don’t think we should be talking about, like, the greatness of the country,” another student suggested.
“I definitely don’t agree that America is the best country on the earth. I think that we still need a lot of, like, fixing,” a third said.
“I think it’s a dangerous mindset to teach young people that, because I think that’s the reason why a lot of people grow up to be kind of extremists and, like, really nationalistic,” another student said.
When asked to react to a recent video posted to the Virginia Department of Education’s YouTube channel telling teachers to avoid talking about American exceptionalism while teaching about September 11, 2001, students said they agreed.
“We definitely should [avoid talking about American exceptionalism], because we don’t need more nationalism in this country. We need more, like, healthcare, I don’t know,” one student said.
“I think they should focus on America’s faults, not, like, how amazing we are and how we need to be superior, because we’re not,” the student added.
Another student said that “in terms of propagating this idea that our nation is the best no matter what, I would agree that that should be avoided.”
Who’s to blame for 9/11? / Bush and Clinton administrations could be faulted for failing to protect the nation against the 2001 assaults.
As President Bush prepares to name a commission to investigate why U. S. intelligence vastly overestimated Saddam Hussein‘s stocks of weapons of mass destruction, another commission is already trying to pin down why this nation vastly underestimated the murderous intentions of Osama bin Laden on American soil.
The latter panel, called the 9/11 commission, is charged with determining why the United States was so notoriously unprepared for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Its final report is expected in July. But the independent, bipartisan commission is having its own struggles to understand the failure to anticipate and prevent what happened that gruesome day.
Why did the CIA and the FBI ignore repeated warnings that hijackers might strike the United States? What did Bush know in the weeks and months preceding the attacks? Did former President Clinton ignore or soft-pedal earlier threats? And, the biggest question of all: What’s to prevent a similar strike from happening again?
Not since the Warren Commission, which in 1964 investigated the death of President John F. Kennedy, has a Washington panel had so much riding on its conclusions. The report has the potential to affect the 2004 presidential campaign, lead to major changes in the top branches of the U.S. government and ease the way for even stricter levels of security around the world.
Kristen Breitweiser has a personal stake in the commission’s work. After her husband, Ronald, was killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, Breitweiser urged Congress to create the 9/11 commission, which it did in November of 2002. (President Bush signed the law that formally established it.) Breitweiser has been involved ever since, so she’s a good barometer of the commission’s progress. Her feeling: Its report may be badly flawed — hamstrung, she says, by an administration that didn’t want it in the first place, and by the commissioners’ own foot-dragging.
“It’s upsetting,” Breitweiser said in a telephone interview from her home in East Brunswick, N.J. “We want a comprehensive report that is going to fix responsibility, going to hold people accountable and going to have solid recommendations for Congress to act upon and fix the problem.”
Breitweiser isn’t alone in her anxiety. Recognizing the gravity of their mission, the commissioners requested a new deadline for their report instead of the original target of May 27. And last week President Bush agreed to delay the due date for two months, until July 26. That would allow the commission to hold more public hearings. Among possible witnesses: President Bush, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and other members of the Bush administration.
The report is likely to point fingers and assign blame. Gary Hart, the former senator who from 1998 to 2001 co-chaired a government commission studying U.S. security that warned of a “catastrophic” terrorist threat on U.S. soil, expects the blame to lead directly to the White House. Hart expects the commission will find conclusive evidence that both presidents Bush and Clinton knew that hijackers were likely to strike the United States.
“I will be amazed if they do not find that the CIA and other agencies warned the administration that we could be attacked sooner rather than later – – I think there’s a smoking gun,” Hart said in a telephone interview from Colorado. “The issue is what did we know and when did we know it.”
One 9/11 widow has already made up her mind. Ellen Mariani, whose husband, Louis, was on the plane that slammed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, has sued Bush and other members of his administration for alleged negligence. Mariani says she doesn’t trust the commission to do its job. She believes her federal lawsuit — which accuses Bush of attempting to profit from the attacks politically — is the only way to uncover the truth.
“My husband fought four years in the Air Force for our country, and he died on his own soil just like that — and no one is being held responsible, ” Mariani said in a telephone interview from her home in New Hampshire. “No one is coming forward in the government, which is blocking every damn thing they can. That’s a red flag to me that means they are holding something back.”
Mariani, who is 65 and lives on Social Security, said she had an almost innate trust of the U.S. government before the attacks. Those feelings were replaced by anger and revulsion when the federal agency known as the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund tried to give her what she calls “hush money.” The payment would have prevented Mariani from suing the government, but the more Mariani learned about the attacks, the more questions she had, questions that went unanswered by U.S. officials. Why, for example, was there at least a 15- minute lapse, she said, from the time her husband’s plane (United Flight 175) was hijacked to the time that airport officials in Boston notified the North American Aerospace Defense Command to scramble fighter jets? Had NORAD been notified sooner, Mariani said, its jets might have at least prevented Flight 175 from crashing into the tower.
Late last month, it held its seventh round of public hearings. In testimony, former officials of the Federal Aviation Administration admitted they hadn’t seriously considered the threat of suicide hijackings.
Previous reports have contended that Washington officials and intelligence agencies knew, or should have known, before Sept. 11 that Muslim radicals were planning a major attack on the United States.
According to the report of a congressional inquiry released in December 2002, U.S. intelligence knew as early as 1994 that terrorists were considering hijacking airplanes and flying them into populous places in the United States. Muslim fundamentalists had already tried to bring down the World Trade Center with a car bomb in 1993. The 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed hundreds and wounded thousands, were more proof that Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda were looking for big targets.
By summer 2001, however, U.S. intelligence agencies still had not coordinated their anti-terrorism efforts, and that failure led to numerous missed opportunities. For example, future hijackers Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi — who were being monitored by the CIA for their connection to al Qaeda — lived in San Diego (al-Hazmi was listed in the phone book) while they planned their roles in the attacks. The FBI didn’t know about the CIA’s efforts, so even though an FBI informant was in contact with al-Mihdhar and al-Hazmi in San Diego, the FBI didn’t pursue the two hijackers more aggressively, according to the congressional inquiry.
The 9/11 commission used that inquiry as the basis for its own investigation. By trying to sort out blame, the commission is stepping into a political minefield. Every statement by commissioners — including Kean’s public comments that the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were “preventable” — is being used by Democrats as evidence that “Bush knew.”
It’s been reported (by Time magazine and Gerald Posner in his recent book “Why America Slept”) and confirmed by the White House that, on Aug. 6, 2001, the CIA briefed Bush at his Texas ranch on the possibility that al Qaeda might try to hijack airplanes in the United States. How much of a tip-off was that? How much would that information have popped out amid the hundreds of other matters Bush was responsible for? On May 16, 2002, Condoleezza Rice said, “I don’t think anybody could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile.”
Bush’s critics want the 9/11 commission (the membership of which is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans) to highlight the administration’s purported misstatements and inconsistencies. Recently, Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark insisted that “the full truth” will reveal that Bush “did not do everything he could have done to protect the United States of America before 9/11.” That remains to be seen.
The president’s detractors have been skeptical of his actions from the moment Congress created the commission on Nov. 27, 2002. Under terms of the mandate, Bush appointed the commission’s chair while Congress named the nine other commissioners. Bush at first chose as chairman Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon‘s former national security adviser and secretary of state. Within weeks, Kissinger resigned because of demands that he disclose the clients of his international consulting firm. Bush then appointed Kean, also a Republican. Kean has demonstrated his independence, complaining about the panel’s access to White House material. The commission has threatened to subpoena the documents.
Rohan Gunaratna, a terrorism expert who is the author of “Inside Al Qaeda, ” spoke to the commission at a public hearing nine months ago. He says people shouldn’t look at the commission as a panacea — that no matter what it concludes on what went wrong and how the United States can prevent future attacks, al Qaeda and other terrorist groups will probably find another way to attack this country. Gunaratna’s concerns mirror those of FBI Director Robert Mueller, who said last month that terrorists would “quite probably” hit again within U.S. borders.
“The United States shouldn’t wait (for the recommendations of) the commission’s report, but should move now — otherwise valuable time will be lost,” says Gunaratna, who is head of terrorism research at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies in Singapore. “America is today facing a severe threat — a threat that will not diminish. All indications are that it’s increasing. In time, groups (of terrorists) will conduct even more bold and daring strikes.”
The commission’s deadline could be extended by Congress to late summer or even after the November election. The report is certain to be politicized.
“Everyone’s going to put their own stamp on it,” Hart said. “To the degree that it’s critical of Clinton, the Bush people will point their finger at Clinton. To the degree that it’s critical of Bush, the Clinton people will point their finger at Bush. This (may be) an unresolved issue. Let’s compare it to Pearl Harbor. Sixty years later, books are still being written about what Franklin Roosevelt knew, what did the Navy know, what did the security services know. And you still have conspiracies, (including one) that Roosevelt knew but didn’t take action because he wanted to get us into World War II. That’s why the Kean commission is so important. They have a chance to lay the factual foundation that will reduce — but not eliminate — controversies over the facts.”
Although finding the truth can’t bring back Louis Mariani, his widow said it would help her come to terms with his violent death and the deaths of 3,000 other people on Sept. 11. Mariani said she’s been through hell in the past 2 1/2 years. Breitweiser, 32, said commission chairman Kean has already done her a service by admitting publicly that the attacks were preventable. “To hear that my husband didn’t necessarily have to die does not come as a surprise to me,” she said. “What comes as a surprise is that, finally, someone in an official capacity is acknowledging that. France has become the latest European country — and the most significant tourism destination — to remove the United States from its safe travel list, following EU recommendations in the wake of a US Covid spike. A French government decree issued on Thursday bumped the United States and Israel from the country’s “green” list, down to “orange,” effectively prohibiting nonessential travel to France for unvaccinated visitors. Under France’s rules, unvaccinated travelers from either country will still be allowed provided they have an essential reason for travel, however they’ll need a negative Covid-19 test before travel and must be quarantined for seven days on arrival. France’s move follows restrictions imposed on US travelers from several other European destinations. Earlier this week, Spain changed its entry policy for arrivals from the US, requiring them to have a certificate proving double vaccination.

Denmark and the Netherlands have also recently updated their restrictions, requiring proof of vaccination for US travelers. Sweden, meanwhile, has banned all US arrivals regardless of vaccination status. Italy last week began requiring all visitors, including those from the United States, to show proof of a PCR or antigen Covid test taken within 72 hours of travel, regardless of whether they are vaccinated. The new measures follow a nonbinding recommendation from the European Union to its member states earlier this month to begin restricting US arrivals following rising Covid-19 numbers across the United States during July and August. Many European travel destinations reopened their borders to Americans earlier in the summer in the hope of attracting much needed tourism dollars to boost Covid-battered economies. With Covid’s Delta variant spreading throughout the US, some countries, including Germany, had already begun restricting access to Americans prior to the EU recommendation. Others, such as Greece, insist they will remain open regardless of traveler vaccination status.

Policymakers within the Biden Administration have clearly seen the COVID-19 data out of Israel, the first country that went all in on population-wide mRNA shots. It’s too early to tell exactly how that will pan out, but in the meantime, the Biden Administration needs to find a way to shimmy their way out of declaring victory over COVID just a couple months ago, given its clear resurgence throughout our nation among both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
Instead of owning up to the reality we cannot eliminate a submicroscopic infectious particle from existence, and perhaps admitting that government officials wildly oversold an innovative “cure” to the disease, they’re continuing with the dictatorial insanity.
With respiratory season just around the corner, the “unvaccinated” are going to be scapegoated for when our government has once again failed to achieve the impossible task of stopping an endemic virus from circulating among a massive population.
At first, they took a somewhat more diplomatic approach, blaming the “Delta variant” for their failures to deliver. But now, they’ve shifted their wrath onto fellow Americans, specifically, the 25% of “unvaccinated” individuals in America who refuse to submit to the “health” demands of the regime. None of it makes scientific sense, but it doesn’t have to, because it’s no longer about health or science, but in protecting the reputation of the White House.
The Biden Administration is losing its unwinnable “War on COVID,” and as its ratings go down in flames, it has backed itself into a corner. Instead of being honest about their failures with the American people, Biden officials are choosing to triple and quadruple down on these broken policy measures. They’re purposely pitting Americans against each other, and labeling the “unvaccinated” as the ultimate scapegoat for their failures. Time will tell if they succeed, or if Americans decide to find the courage to reject the latest series of unconstitutional edicts.

The song, “America the Beautiful,” Was based on a poem written by the professor, poet, and writer, Katharine Lee Bates, during an 1893 trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado. When she got to the top of Pikes Peak, the view was so beautiful that it inspired her to write, “All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse.”
The poem that Bates wrote first appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. Within a few months, it was set to music by Silas G. Pratt. Bates revised the song in 1904, after receiving many requests to use the song in publications and special services. An additional change was made to the wording of the third verse in 1913 to give us the version we know today. The song is considered by some to be the country’s unofficial national anthem.

For years after America The Beautiful was written, it was sung to popular or folk tunes that would fit with the lyrics; “Auld Lang Syne” was the most popular of these tunes.
In March of 2008, in the heat of the Democratic primary, Obama’s long-time Chicago pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, gave a speech at the National Press Club that was filled with racial invectives and accusations. Some thought it would be the end of Obama’s chances to win the nomination. Then came the candidate’s now-historic speech on race in America—A More Perfect Union—which he delivered in Philadelphia on March 18. As Obama says now, he hoped to show the nation that when it comes to the complicated subject of race, there is no black and no white—just an awful lot of gray.
The speech was, in part, prompted by a crisis.
The pastor of our church in Chicago, Reverend Jeremiah Wright:CLIP OF THE WEEK: “TAKE A KNEE” was also acknowledged not just within African American circles, but among many people who study theology and the church and the power of sermons that he was one of the best around. And [he] had built this magnificent church that was doing all kinds of good work in the community. But generationally, he came out of the 60s, and still had the anger and frustrations and in some cases, the overly simplistic views borne out of that age. There would be times where his sermons would go into places that were offensive. I wasn’t aware of them, but a couple of those sermons popped up. I hadn’t been sitting there when they happened and, understandably, they raised concerns.
The reaction, initially, of a lot of my team was to simply disown [Reverend Wright] and not try to speak in a complicated way to the American people. The notion was that in this sound bite age, that was a losing proposition. I decided that, actually, this was a useful moment to try to put in context the complexities of race relations in modern America. The idea was to try to get America to see these issues, not in simple black and white terms—pun intended—but to see that how we’ve evolved in race is complicated; it doesn’t travel in a straight line, but that the trajectory is good. The trajectory is positive, and that rather than hunker down in our own respective corners, we need to be more generous and try to assume the best in people as opposed to the worst, even as we stand up for principles that we think are important.
I focused on what needed to be focused on in my first term: making sure we rescued the economy from a Great Depression, following through on my promise to provide healthcare to people who didn’t have it, making sure we were expanding opportunities for students to go to college. There were just a series of urgent issues that had to be addressed that were important to everybody—black, white, Hispanic, Asian. What is true is that I did not focus my policy initiatives on issues that would help African Americans alone. Primarily, the most important thing I could do for the African American or Latino community at that time was to make sure they had a job and a home and weren’t losing everything they’d worked so hard for.
In my second term, what you ended up seeing are issues so specific to race relations—most notably, the police shootings of African American men or boys. It became more urgent to speak directly to how we address those issues. It wasn’t that those issues were avoided in the first term. It’s just that they did not surface. The division in how people see the world—the sense on the part of African Americans that the criminal justice system isn’t fair, and it’s not a matter of paranoia to be concerned about it. And the perception on the part of whites: Why are you attacking the police that keep us safe? We have great trust in them. That was and continues to be a very difficult issue to bridge.
I used my speech at Dallas, probably one of the most sorrowful and tragic episodes during my presidency…to again, try to bridge these divides. In some ways, it was a corollary to the speech I gave in Philadelphia. What I said in the Dallas speech continues to be true—that in some ways, no matter how heartfelt or elegant the words, bridging these divides takes time and, more importantly, requires actions, actions at the local level. Actions involving police chiefs and community activists and clergy and mayors and people of goodwill coming together and really trying to do practical things.
Rather than simply react to these events with the proverbial conversation on race, what we’ve tried to do is really dig in and say, “All right, what builds trust? Are there ways in which investigations of these shootings can make communities feel as if they’re being treated fairly? Can we train police differently?
Are we able to provide police with the tools so that they feel safer when they go in these communities, and are less likely to react too quickly in circumstances where they might be able to de-escalate?” All those issues end up over time having more of a lasting effect than any conversation or speech I might engage in.
There’s no doubt that among some circles, among some constituencies, the reaction to my policies or proposals might have been in some ways colored by my race. And that cuts both ways. I think African Americans were so proud that they probably were willing to be less critical of me, in some cases, than they might otherwise be for a white president. What’s also true is that some of my critics were a little faster to jump on certain issues in certain ways than they might otherwise have been, and that is part of the process of the evolution of the country’s attitudes.

You should absolutely expect your freedom of speech as well as freedom of the press to be harshly curtailed under martial law, especially if it’s the reason for it in the first place. Citizens agitating against their government or publishing politically-charged media that may “inflame” the crisis will be stopped. Likewise any fresh ill sentiment against your newly-minted military overlords will be similarly put down.
And don’t even think about gathering in public or in large groups organizing for any particular purpose; there’s a surefire way to make your rulers nervous.
You can also expect door-to-door searches to search for and seize firearms. Small arms in the hands of citizenry have long been a check and major thorn in the side of people who are trying to exert control over a populace.
One need not look too far back in United States history to see the first tender threads of this behavior emerging. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina after it struck the Gulf Coast of the United States police and military both engaged in confiscatory behavior regarding citizens’ rights to keep and bear arms.
This took place in and around New Orleans. We saw it then, as ever, done under the auspices of public safety or some other mealy-mouthed counterfeit civil good. Also consider that demands for housing, storage and logistical requirements for outfitting and mobilizing a large military force will mean that you might in fact see your private property confiscated, or if not confiscated “temporarily repurposed”, for the storage of military men and material.
Your government and military thanks you for your cooperation, and reminds you that any complaining or resistance to your ordered voluntarism is a crime, and will be punished!
In keeping with the theme of new ownership over civic property, absolutely expect to have all of your holdings searched or inspected at any time for any reason.
Be it rooting out dissenters, looking for criminal malcontents, or hunting for newly classified contraband material the outcome will be all the same: you’ll have soldiers knocking on your door demanding that you open up at the most inopportune and inconvenient times.
You no longer have the right to be free from unreasonable searches, or seizure of your property. That is doubly troubling for preppers who have laboriously and meticulously accumulated preps of food, medical supplies and other provisions can see them confiscated for the greater good by military personnel.
Imagine, all the time, effort and money you spent ahead to be prepared, to be ready, and some goons march in and take it all away. Feels bad, man.
Lastly, your life is about to get a whole lot more orderly whether you want it to or not. Curfews will be a certainty.
Movement in, out and around the area affected by martial law will be watched, curtailed or halted. You may be expected to check in with the new local authority for any number of reasons.
A sort of civic work conscription may be put in effect. You may be expected to answer questions, or volunteer information about your property or your skills that could be useful.
In short, in a worst-case scenario, things will look awfully totalitarian under martial law.
A Glimmer of Hope
There is one hope, one mad hope that we can trust to preserve our rights under martial law.
The United States Supreme Court has ruled against the federal government in times past, and people in the United States were to be tried and sentenced under martial law successfully argued their case in front of the highest court authority in the land. So perhaps your rights as an accused person in a criminal case, codified by Amendment 6 of the United States Bill of Rights, may still be in effect under martial law. Amendment 6 of the Bill of Rights reads:
“In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.”

We take for granted in the United States that martial law has scarcely been imposed here, even compared to other Western countries. Around the world, governments impose martial law at the drop of a hat in order to consolidate their power or to quell unruly populace.
How do we believe in good days ahead? By creating them through our faith… by our choices… thinking of our abundant health and life… lifting prayers up for goodness… living in today & planning ahead in the presence of God for tomorrow.

Vaccines Are Pushing Pathogens to Evolve | Quanta Magazine I got my first vaccine jab literally the first day it was available. I am in favor of it, even though it isn’t living up to its promise (understatement). But anyone who doesn’t have a problem with the president exercising this kind of power by executive order, has a problem. “Well, the statute gives him this authority.” I don’t know if that’s true or not, but if it is, it’s a good indication that the statute needs to be thrown out, not that what he is doing is okay. This is not a particularly close call.
I think it is clearly within the power of the federal government to institute a mandate like this, but any change this major and breathtaking should be passed through Congress. If something like this doesn’t require legislation, there’s no reason for Congress to exist. I will have no sympathy for anyone who defends this action when President Trump opens his second term in 2025 with an executive order requiring all private businesses to forcibly administer hydroxy chloroquinoline once a week.
Unvaccinated people are like drunk drivers; drunk people get behind the wheel to endanger lives and well being of others. Those who refuse to get vaccinated get sick and transmit the disease to others. If it (vax) lived up to its promise, “Safe and Effective”, we would not have this discussion. Many had a healthy skepticism of a drug rushed to market without the usual testing. As they paused to see how things worked out, it proved itself not to be the wonder drug promised. There’s a difference between a healthy caution & this irrational fear of Covid. Everyone will eventually get Covid. It’s a contagious respiratory virus & the vaxx does NOT stop transmission, vaxxed are getting & giving it to OTHER VAXXED people.
I have a problem with it because it excludes many who are post covid still have antibodies 10 and 12 months later. My antibodies are out lasting your vax. I’m not getting vax because I have natural immunity. Not saying get a CV for NI. It should show immunity or vax. I’ve really come to a point where I think we should be showing immunity/antibody screenings more than anything else. It’s really what we’re after and the natural antibodies are holding up well. Just curious, as someone who got the vaccine and did not have covid prior, there is strong evidence that prior infection + the vaccine is the strongest immune response available.
Why not get the vaccine for that extra protection?

Since I have the antibodies I am waiting for more time and studies to prove safety. There have been 9k people who have died and 5x that number with severe effects. It’s Russian roulette. So while I have antibodies… because I have had Covid. I’ll wait. There have not been 9k deaths from the vaccine. That’s misinformation. Most immunologists who have been working with the vaccine recommend vax after infection. I find their argument most compelling, but it is your choice, hopefully with the advice of a GP. The Afghans evacuated by the United States have escaped the Taliban.
But they still face a humanitarian emergency. These are refugees experiencing stunning loss and anxiety — they have well-founded fears of persecution as defined in the Refugee Convention and U.S. law — and they need and deserve legal status in the United States through a smooth and welcoming process.
As we have seen, the Afghan refugees were and continue to be hurriedly evacuated and provided quick entry through what’s known as the parole authority of the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. While this authority — used in the past for Cuban and Kurdish refugees, among others — enabled the United States to move quickly, it does not come with any assurances of support, a pathway to permanent residence in the United States or, most importantly, reunification with spouses and children left behind.
Congress should urgently solve this problem by passing legislation that will adjust the immigration status and that will immediately provide transition assistance to the tens of thousands of Afghan refugees who have arrived and will arrive in the future.
But if Congress is slow, or fails to act, the Biden administration has at its disposal a fit-for-purpose option — the Refugee Act of 1980, which Congress enacted with near unanimity. In fact, this crisis could provide the administration with a unique opportunity to revitalize this landmark refugee legislation.
With the Refugee Act, Congress designed a system for normal times as well as for emergencies that would recognize refugees of humanitarian concern to the United States, receive them in safety and dignity, and put them on a pathway to become new Americans. Since 1980, the United States has resettled more than 3 million refugees, most of whom are now lawful permanent residents or U.S. citizens.
While the current administration inherited a U.S. refugee admissions program that had been decimated by the Trump administration, it wasn’t until May — and then only under enormous pressure from refugee advocates — that the president raised the 2021 fiscal year refugee admissions ceiling to 62,500. But as of July 31, the U.S. had admitted only 6,274, on a pace to fall far short of President Trump’s record low ceiling.
Support for refugee admission “slots” are funded by Congress but cannot be rolled over from one fiscal year to the next, so with less than one month left in the 2021 fiscal year, over 50,000 refugee admissions places are likely be lost at the very same time those very same fully funded places could be used to receive and integrate Afghan refugees now on U.S. military bases in the United States or at locations overseas.
In the absence of new legislation from Congress to quickly adjust status and provide refugee benefits to the Afghans, the administration should make quick use of these 50,000 funded admission slots. The president should also be prepared to use the authority he is given by the Refugee Act both to raise this year’s refugee ceiling and to announce a ceiling of 200,000, for next year to accommodate Afghan arrivals as well as other refugees.
In short, in the absence of congressional action, the Refugee Act provides a safe and legal solution.
Moreover, while some might argue that Afghans who were not considered for refugee status overseas and are already here as parolees cannot be processed under the Refugee Act, we do not share that view. Rather, we agree with a 1980 opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, which argued that U.S. law “does not require that the alien be processed overseas or that he apply for refugee status in a third country.”
Biden administration officials will also confront the question of how to process Afghans who are currently being provided temporary refuge overseas but will very soon be in the United States. Even if the administration is unwilling to apply the Refugee Act to parolees already on U.S. soil — and in the absence of congressional action to solve the problem — the administration could use the Refugee Act for expedited and “bifurcated” processing under the Refugee Act, as applied in 1999 for Kosovar refugees evacuated from then-Macedonia.
The U.S. evacuation of 9,000 Kosovar refugees demonstrated that resettlement need not always be slow and bureaucratic. Under “bifurcated processing,” U.S. immigration officials initiated a refugee adjudication in Macedonia, quickly recognizing that the Kosovars they were interviewing had essentially all fled Kosovo at the same time for the same reason. Those Kosovars were flown and paroled into the United States. Many were sent to a military base in New Jersey where U.S. officials completed their processing and adjudications. Kosovars entered Fort Dix as parolees, but left as refugees.
Like the Kosovar refugees who preceded them, these Afghans all fled at the same time for essentially the same reason and can easily establish that they are refugees under U.S. law.
Congress should urgently act to quickly straighten out the status of the Afghans within the framework of the Refugee Act. But if that is not forthcoming, the administration has an option — the Refugee Act itself, which should be as adaptive and flexible as its drafters intended.

The United States’ longest war is over, but the battle for Afghan-Americans to recover their families is just beginning.
Henry, an Afghan-American translator, is just one of the many people still dealing with the fallout of the Biden administration’s botched withdrawal operations. After the last group of U.S. military took flight from Afghanistan to meet the president’s August 31 deadline, hundreds of Americans and Afghan allies who assisted the U.S. ‘s decades-long occupation in Afghanistan were left behind, including Henry’s wife, brother, and children as young as three years old.
Henry, who received his U.S. citizenship in 2020 after spending time in the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program, lives and works in the United States, so when the Taliban advanced into Kabul and the Afghan government fled in mid-August, his first priority was getting his family, who was still tied up trying to enter the U.S. immigration process, out of the Middle East country and to safety with him.
“I received an email from the U.S. Embassy. They had a pass in the email. It said ‘please go to the airport,’ you know, ‘take your family, go to the airport,’” Henry told The Federalist.
Henry’s family rushed to pack up and travel to the Hamid Karzai International Airport airport in Kabul but when they got there, they met crowds of thousands of other Americans and Afghans hoping to reach the U.S.-controlled area where they could catch a lifeline flight out of the country. It took them two days to navigate their way through the desperate mob, which previously trampled a 2-year-old girl to death, before they reached the right gate.
Once they got inside the terminal, Henry’s family faced another crowd of people hoping to get bussed to a departure spot. There, his wife and kids sat for two more days in the heat without any supplies. At one point, Henry lost contact with his family because his wife lost her phone, her purse, and even some jewelry after being jostled by other panicked people fleeing the Taliban.
“They were not prepared,” Henry said. “They didn’t have water and no food, nothing.”
“My family and everybody else was asking about water because the kids were getting unconscious. They were asking the Marine guys to see if they could provide some water. My wife was calling me. And I was helpless and I was trying to see if I could talk to one of those marine soldiers out there so that he or she could provide some water to them. And they were saying they don’t even have water. Like no water, no food, so just be patient, you know, and that was a really sad moment,” Henry said.
Henry also tried calling some of his friends in the military who he used to work in Afghanistan to see if they could help his family.
“After talking to them, me and my American Marine friends were begging those guys out there to at least provide some water for those people and those children. And finally they would, from somewhere, find like two or three bottles of water,” Henry said.
The water, however, didn’t last. It wasn’t long before Henry said people were instructed to go home or risk dehydration and starvation. Henry said a lot of people left but his wife was determined to stay.
“My wife, she said ‘if it takes me whatever, I’m gonna stay here. If they’re gonna take me, I’m gonna stay here so I can go and get with the dad of my kids together,’” Henry said. “So she stayed there. Those two days, they were just begging for water and luckily they were getting some water and that was after getting in contact with my Marine guys and the army guys.”
After six days of waiting, Henry said buses finally came to get his wife and kids, but their joy didn’t last for long. When his family failed to show a U.S. passport or green card, they were told to go home.
“All they had was the Afghan passports and they had the path that I sent which was from the U.S. Embassy,” Henry said. “…It was a very sad moment.”
The U.S. military may have turned Henry’s family away, but all hope was not lost.
“After six days, somehow these people, like angels, fall from the sky and say ‘we will do our best to get to your family here because they’re the family of the U.S. citizen.’ And I shared that with my wife. And she got so happy. That was a happy one,” Henry said.
Much like the Pineapple Express, the group assisting Henry is using covert, private operations to assist Americans who felt abandoned by the Biden administration’s abrupt departure. This “hodgepodge” of individuals, some of which have served in the U.S. military in special operations or still do, are “actively shepherding” people who are at risk of Taliban retaliation out of the country.
Others are using their knowledge and relationships with translators and connections on the ground to relay information to the network of rescuers who have the skills and resources to complete private missions and step in after the Biden administration failed. One group member told The Federalist that they have successfully rescued approximately 200 people.
“Then we were going through whatever these guys were guiding us like to go,” Henry said. “…My wife never gave up, and she was going to wherever we were saying.”
These same individuals are also assisting Henry with getting his family into U.S. immigration proceedings. Henry previously spent months bouncing between bureaucratic agencies and even hired an expensive lawyer to help him get his family to the United States through the same program he used.
“I also applied for my wife and my kids when I came here. They were also in the process of being here sometime. And that actually took like four years and I was just running around with immigration, providing them all the documentation, and the passport, everything that they needed. And still, I guess, it’s because maybe there are too many people who applied for that…every time they were thinking that it’s under review…They took forever,” Henry said.
But when these “angels” swept in, they also paid Henry’s lawyer and helped expedite the process for Henry to be reunited with his wife and kids in the states.
“We got approval confirmation for my family and the lawyer is working on it because these guys, like I said, the angels, they paid the remaining balance for my family. They can get the visas after the interview,” Henry said.
The rescue mission for Henry’s family is still underway, but Henry said he already feels much more optimistic than he did in August.
“I’m so happy,” Henry said. “I hope my family will come here soon so we can go and see these people up close and hug these people. Otherwise, what term would we use for shots that give protection but not immunity? Especially considering most shots do not grant immunity. Because immunity is a strong absolute term. Vaccination has generally been understood to mean that the vaccine confers immunity. Since none of the C19 jabs do that, it would perhaps be more appropriate to refer to them with the broader term “inoculations” rather than change the commonly understood definition of vaccination. There are – and have been – almost no vaccines that give perfect immunity. I don’t know about you, but if I cut myself on a rusty fence, I’m kinda hoping my DTAP vax provides immunity to tetanus rather than protecting me from severe symptoms. We call them SHOTS.
