How Joy of Life can prevent Cancer

Ok, I know this sounds a little hippy dippy, but come on, there is a teensy bit of hippy dippy in you…I know it!

As the years passed after my diagnosis and my health grew stronger, I began to reconnect with myself in another way. I felt a small burning fire within me, one that seemed to say: “Hey, you are doing all right… you are good… you can do this”! And I thought: what? Who said that?

This little fire began to glow brighter bit by bit. The more I gained confidence, the more accessible creativity was. And the more I fed my creativity and signed up for dance classes, guitar lessons, and distance races, the brighter the glow. The deeper I dove and tackled old body image issues and self-doubting shadows, the hotter the flames. There are actual moments in my life when I feel the fire burning so bright that I feel like I might combust right there in the middle of the street!

Call it what you will: faith, self-love, creative energy, compassion, gratitude, or spiritual connection. It all has the same cancer-preventing serum: lightness of heart, connection     of soul, love of life… they all create physical reactions within the body.

  •  Studies have found that positive emotions create harmonious heart rhythms. This means that emotional tranquility contributes to balanced and efficient physiological patterns in the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
  • Loving feelings are said to undo negative stress responses by calming the cardiovascular system and switching us out of our fight or flight nervous system response and into our parasympathetic dominance, where the calm healing takes place.
  • Positive emotional practices can enhance cognitive function by encouraging big picture thinking, and expanding our perception of what’s in our peripheral vision. When we focus on the big picture, the small things bother us less, reducing excess, unnecessary stressors.

Likely you’ve seen it at some point in your life. Perhaps there was a catastrophic event,       a death, an accident, abuse, or some severe emotional upheaval. You’ve maybe watched and held a friend through it. Or you’ve read about it, seen it in movies, and have an understanding without direct experience.

And maybe, you know it well. Perhaps there was a time in your life where the walls fell down, the ground slid out from under you, and everything you thought was alright just wasn’t that way anymore.

Trauma. It’s a word we throw around a lot these days. It is the Greek word for “wound”; described as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, or a highly stressful event. It overwhelms a person’s ability to cope with no clear divisions between stress, trauma, and adaptation.  Important to note is that it is the individual’s subjective and intrinsic experience that determines whether or not an event is deemed traumatic.

Physiologically speaking, when the body is in a state of severe stress, we are dominantly functioning in our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). Although this part     of our nervous system may serve us well  in the middle  of a highly stressful situation (a Grizzly bear is chasing you or you need to high-tail it out of a burning building),  it does   not serve us to remain here for long periods of time. When we remain in this part of our nervous system for extended periods of time (chronic/long-term stress), a cascade of physiological reactions take place and some severe damage can be done.

Chronic Stress Causes:

  • Respiratory distress
  • Increased heart rate and cardiovascular function
  • Exhausted adrenal glands and strained liver
  • Gastrointestinal dysfunction and decreased nutrient absorption
  • Interrupted menstrual cycles and increased pms symptoms
  • Increased anxiety, depression, and insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Memory and cognitive impairment
  • Weight fluctuations and disrupted hunger signals

I am familiar with trauma. I know what it feels like in my body and I know first hand    how much of a toll it takes on the psyche, the gut, the heart, the body, and soul alike.

Sigh.

What I’ve learned: there is ALWAYS an upside!

There is SO much you can do to help support yourself (or a loved one) through trauma. One of the beautiful things about living during the 21st century, is that we have so many means and different avenues to take towards healing. Being able to choose is empowering and, during the hard times, it is super important to feel like we have some control.

Supporting Your Self and Others Through Trauma

  • Therapy: Finding the right person to talk to, in a safe space, and in confidentiality,    is imperative to filtering thoughts and emotions. Ask around, be patient, and listen      to your intuition when it comes to choosing the right person for you.
  • Acupuncture: I love, love, love acupuncture and the endless healing it presents for us. Acupuncture can open up channels within the body that have been blocked up for years, encourage energy flow, and a deep level of healing that is difficult to access just through talk. Again, take the time to find the right practitioner for you.
  • Adrenal Support: The adrenal glands can easily become overworked and inflamed during prolonged times of stress. Supporting these glands, which regulate our hormones, can encourage a calmer state, reducing anxiety, aid with insomnia, and improve mood and overall ability to adapt and cope.
  • Immune Supplements: Since our immune system tends to become suppressed during times of trauma and stress, giving the Immune system some added support   can help us avoid getting illnesses we may very well have trouble fighting. I highly recommend taking Vitamins: C (250mg as often as every 2 hrs), D (at least 2oooiu/day), E ( 400iu/day), and/or an Echinacea/Goldenseal tincture.
  • Essential Oils: Essential oils encourage healing through inhalation.   • Calming Techniques: Invite as much calm into the mind and body as possible. Simple, at-home, practices that can be incorporated into every day life: warm baths with Epsom salts, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, quiet walks, journaling and reading.
  • Nourish Properly: As nutrient absorption and intestinal function is compromised at this time, optimal nutritional intake and good eating habits is crucial. Stick to a whole foods diet, avoid sugars, alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, and problematic foods. Include as many nurturing foods as possible: ginger, garlic, turmeric, onions, curry, roots, broths, berries, salmon, sprouts, greens, cruciferous vegetables, lentils and chia.
  • Get Outside: No matter the season, fresh air, Nature (water, trees, mountains, earth), the break from work or inside air or children, is naturally calming and centering.  Focus on bringing your brain energy (racing thoughts, running to-do list, negative self-talk) down through your chest and belly and run it down your legs out into the ground.  This practice can often bring us back into the body and reunite us to the outside world.
  • Try Herbal Teas: Herbal teas are warming, calming, and soothing to the nervous system and the intestines. Try peppermint, ginger, fennel, rose, chamomile, and lemon balm.
  • Remember Love: Surrounding your self with people you love; people you trust; people who make you feel safe, is integral to bringing forth healing.  Remember the people you love and bring them in close, lean on them, and remind yourself of what it feels like to be loved and feel love.  There is no true healing that can happen without the love, people!!

In the treatment of chronic disease, both doctors and patients almost always focus their time and energies solely on the physical aspects of the disease. Rarely does the emotional aspect of a chronic disease is ever considered, let alone examined and treated.

But we are all too familiar with what an extended period of stress with no clear respite in sight can do to our physical and mental health. And stress is not the only emotional state that can have a wide-range of negative effects on our well-being.

Emotions triggered by childhood abuse and trauma that remained unresolved also leave marks in our psyche that could manifest as disease as we grew older. Being unable to comprehend and deal with the terrible things that happened to us or to our closed ones, and without proper guidance from any adult, the best we could do as a child was either to pretend as if nothing had happened, or to blame it on ourselves. But neither of them allows the associated negative emotions to be properly acknowledged and discharged.

Unfortunately, inadequate emotional management skill is not limited to kids. Life as an adult also throws us many challenging situations that often leave us emotionally helpless, drained, frustrated, bitter, unfulfilled or all of the above that we find difficult to handle even as grown-ups. Some examples are:

Spouse or parental abuse, family feud, death of a loved one, betrayal by someone close     to you, an acrimonious divorce, job or property loss, unfair workplace treatment,  false accusation, lengthy legal battles, traumatic accidents, being a victim of a malicious attack or crime, and more.

Destructive emotions are triggered not only when we feel victimized. When we have done something which we later deeply regret we also feel a powerful sense of guilt which can be difficult to shake off.

Regardless of whether you are carrying the story of a helpless victim, that of  a remorseful perpetrator or both, the negative energies associated with each stay with you as long as the corresponding destructive emotions has not been completely resolved, even when memories of them have faded in your mind.

You may not remember all the things that your abusive spouse had done to you, but you will never forget how he/she make you feel.

In other words, when there is no satisfactory closure to an event that negatively affected your life, you will continue to hold on to the energies generated by your emotional response to it. The suppressed energies may stagnate and lie dormant for a period of time, but sooner or later, it will manifest itself in one form or another.

So far, conventional medicine — mainly psychology — has agreed up to a certain point. Posttraumatic stress disorder is an example, but its investigation is still restricted to psychological ailments and only when obvious symptoms are displayed. Under the surface emotional disturbance that does not produce clinically recognized symptoms is generally not believed to contribute to the development of pathological disease.

This is where controversies arise.

Can decades of deep resentment lead to chronic inflammation and its eventual manifestation like cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disease?

Can prolonged chronic stress and unforgiving bitterness (which, like other destructive emotions, can arguably be viewed as a form of toxic stress) promote, maintain or even exacerbate disease? I believe the answer is yes.

The current lack of evidence does not necessarily mean they won’t, but it only goes to show the difficulties in trying to characterize them in a manner that makes research meaningful. Due to the complexity and subjectivity of human nature, at best, we can only get sporadic individual cases which cannot be applied across the board.

A missed handshake, for instance, may be trivial for one person, but it can be a cause of grief for another that degenerates into a deeply held grudge. Hence, where human nature is concerned, it will be near impossible to get the same kind of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled evidence that we demand from biochemistry-based studies.  The lack   of means to isolate and objectively measure emotions like hatred and humiliation makes attempts to investigate their long-term effects even more daunting.

If you have so far agreed with me that unresolved emotions can be destructive to health, how then can you go about releasing them? How do you, in the first place, detect their presence since they may not even be available to the conscious mind? As usual, I propose some suggestions for you to chew over:

What ever you focus on becomes your reality . All people in this world who achieve something or anything in their life have done so …. because they don’t see negativity.        They only see positive and they keep going for it. They fall, they get up but they don’t  “Give up” !!  Once you stop you have stopped ….so keep going.  “Keep your heart open       to dreams. One thing scientist don’t agree upon is the pH theory. Some state you can’t change the    pH of the blood.  Ask any biologist or food scientist,  pH doesn’t matter once food/water     is mixed with stomach acid. Till 1994 we believed —a wild animal, whatever it happens to be—came through to a        relay station called the thalamus, the thalamus sends the information to the cortex, or     pre-frontal cortex. What was believed was the cortex initiates an automatic knee-jerk response: Behavioural – we jump back; Physiological – we increase our blood pressure and adrenalin to fight or flight, and then an Immunological response in case the system      is damaged in some way.

But in fact, back in 1994, Joseph LeDoux and his team discovered this pathway called     the amygdala. Now the amygdala is a key emotional centre in the brain, and what they discovered was that it was the amygdala that initiates the response, not the cortex.

In fact, even more important than that, the amygdala initiates the response before the information reaches the cortex. Now,  because the amygdala is there to keep us alive,       it’s actually not very accurate, but very high speed, and the cortex is very accurate, but relatively slow. So, we’ve initiated a response; activated a response before the information even reaches the cortex.

Why does that matter? Well, the cortex is where we learn new things; it’s where we learn how to behave. So what we call default behaviours today—and a perfect example of that would be road — rage—so we might get involved in some altercation on the road, we get      very frustrated and angry with somebody, then a moment later we realise we perhaps overreacted; because that’s when the cortex has kicked in. And that’s literally how we’re designed to operate.

  We are hardwired to respond emotionally first, and think a moment later.

Now why does that really matter in the context of performance? Well, because it’s getting in the way of performance. Whether its students in the examination hall, golfers out on the course, literally this process of perception is getting in the way of our performance.

Now, if you consider that the amygdala is programmed from birth—primarily during the first 6-8 weeks—and it sets us up as an adult to behave in a particular way.

Earlier in my career as a research scientist and medical school professor, I actively supported the perspective that the human body was a ‘biochemical machine programmed by its genes.’ We scientists believed that human strengths, such as artistic or intellectual abilities, and human weaknesses, such as cardio-vascular disease, cancer or depression, represented traits that were preprogrammed into our genes. Hence I perceived life’s attributes and deficits, as well as our health and our frailties, as merely a reflection of our heredity expression.

Until recently, it was thought that genes were self-actualizing—that genes could ‘turn themselves on and off.’ Such behavior is required in order for genes to control biology.

But our understanding is evolving. Though the power of genes is still emphasized in current biology courses and textbooks, a radically new understanding has emerged at     the leading edge of cell science. It is now recognized that the environment, and more specifically, our perception (interpre-tation) of the environment directly controls the activity of our genes. Environ-ment controls gene activity through a process known as epigenetic control.

This new perspective of human biology does not view the body as just a mechanical  device. Rather, it incorporates the role of a mind and spirit.

This breakthrough in biology is fundamental in all healing, for it recognizes that when we change our perception or beliefs, we send totally different messages to our cells and thus reprogram their expression. The new-biology reveals why people can have spontaneous remissions from disease or recover from injuries deemed to be permanent disabilities.

The functional units of life are the individual cells that comprise our bodies. Though   every cell is innately intelligent and can survive on its own when removed from the body, in the body, each cell foregoes its individuality and becomes a member of a multi-cellular community.  The body represents  the cooperative effort  of a community  of fifty trillion single cells. By definition, a community is an organization of individuals committed to supporting a shared vision. Consequently, while every cell is a free-living entity, the body’s community accommodates the wishes and intents of its ‘central voice,’ a character we perceive as the mind and spirit.

When the mind perceives that the environment is safe and supportive, the cells are preoccupied with the growth and maintenance of the body. In stressful situations, cells forego their normal growth functions and adopt a defensive ‘protection’ posture. The body’s energy resources—normally used to sustain growth—are diverted to systems that provide protection during periods of stress. Simply put, growth processes are restricted   or suspended in a stressed system. While our systems can accommodate periods of acute (brief) stress, prolonged or chronic stress is debilitating for its energy demands interfere with the required maintenance of the body, and as a consequence, leads to dysfunction and disease.

The principle source of stress is the system’s ‘central voice,’ the mind. The mind is like the driver of a vehicle. With good driving skills, a vehicle can be maintained and provide good performance throughout its life. Bad driving skills generate most of the wrecks that litter the roadside or are stacked in junkyards.

If we employ good ‘driving skills’ in managing our behaviors and dealing with our emotions, then we should anticipate a long, happy and productive life. In contrast, inappropriate behaviors and dysfunctional emotional management, like a bad driver, stress the cellular ‘vehicle,’ interfering with its performance and provoking a breakdown.

Are you a good driver or a bad driver? Before you answer that question, realize that      there are two separate minds that create the body’s controlling ‘central voice.’ The (self) conscious mind is the thinking  ‘you,’it is the creative mind that expresses free-will.  Its supporting partner is the subconscious mind, a super computer loaded with a database of programmed behaviors. Some programs are derived from genetics—these are our instincts and they represent nature. But the vast majority of the subconscious programs are acquired through our developmental learning experiences, and they represent nurture.

The subconscious mind is not a seat of reasoning or creative consciousness; it is strictly a stimulus-response device. When an environmental signal is perceived, the subconscious mind reflexively activates a previously stored behavioral response—no thinking required. The subconscious mind is a programmable autopilot that can navigate the vehicle without the observation or awareness of the pilot—the conscious mind. In her book, The Upside of Stress, McGonigal asks, “If you could choose how stressful tomorrow will be, would you hope for a great deal of stress?” Our natural response is likely a resounding “No.” Yet, as McGonigal shows, a subtle shift in perspective around stress can be incredibly empowering. It should be understood that this aspect of stress overlaps with the “Neurogenic” theories, because stress fires up nervous activity which leads to symptoms, to simplify matters. There are several studies showing how stress may cause BPS/IC, a closely related condition. Here are further studies that show that nerves in the lower urinary tract sit alongside mast cells, and can cause them to degranulate, leading to inflammation, under psychological stress:

In a 2001 study cats with chronic pelvic pain syndrome (bladder pain sydrome, feline interstitial cystitis) showed increased sympathetic nervous activity compared to normal cats. That means they were stressed out. These cats also were found to have small adrenal glands, which is something found also in CFS patients. And CFS is frequently found alongside CP/CPPS and IC. It all starts to tie together, but it’s very complex, which is why your local doctor and even urologist may not have a clue about what’s happening to you.

Neuroendocrine Imbalance

Below is a quote from an interesting study showing that stress is linked in a very complex way to inflammation and chronic pain syndromes, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome. It talks about the close “neuro-mast-cell connections in peripheral tissues” like the lower genitourinary tract. On nerves, stress and hormones, the author hints at adrenal fatigue from stress:

Several chronic pain and fatigue syndromes (such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome) have been associated with chronic sickness syndrome manifestations (such as fatigue and hyperalgesia) and with hypoactivity of the stress system (Table III).

[2] [19] Interestingly, these clinical manifestations and the hypocortisolism of these patients are quite reminiscent of mild glucocorticoid deficiency (Addison’s disease). Patients with glucocorticoid deficiency have elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, which may explain their typical sickness syndrome manifestations.[11] [20] When we administered human recombinant IL-6 to these patients, we induced an explosive sickness syndrome that was markedly more severe than that observed in healthy control subjects. In contrast, patients with endogenous hypercortisolism showed very little or no response to IL-6 (unpublished observation).[5] It is tempting to speculate that patients with chronic pain and fatigue syndrome have an imbalance between the immune and inflammatory reactions and the stress response, which results in excessive sickness syndrome manifestations of the former versus the antithetical effects of the latter (Table II).

Stress and the HPA Axis

Research by Stanford urology professor Rodney Anderson shows that patients with chronic pelvic pain have significantly more anxiety, perceived stress and a higher profile of global distress when tested, scoring in the 94th vs the 49th percentile for controls (normal population). Patients showed a significantly blunted plasma adrenocorticotropin hormone response curve with a mean total response approximately 30% less vs controls. Men with pelvic pain have significant disturbances in psychological profiles compared to healthy controls and evidence of altered hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis function in response to acute stress.

Men with chronic pelvic pain syndrome have more perceived stress and anxiety than controls. Psychological test scores are significantly increased in all scales (somatization, obsessive/compulsive behavior, depression, anxiety, hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychoticism) for chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Men with chronic pelvic pain syndrome have significantly increased awakening cortisol responses compared to controls.

Stressed rats with inflamed prostates: prolactin or nerves?

A 1999 report showed that rats get inflamed prostates when they’re subjected to stress. In rats, stress can spur excess production of a hormone called prolactin that may be involved in the inflammation. How do you stress a lab rat? Put it in a small cone for 15 minutes, just small enough that it can’t move. Restraint worries rats immensely. The scientist did this twice a day for four weeks. The stressed rats produced more prolactin and their prostatitis grew worse. The unstressed rats largely healed.

But researching urologist Daniel Shoskes cautioned regarding prolactin:

I have checked Prolactin levels in about 50 men with Chronic Prostatitis because of its potential effects on libido and the whole prolactin receptor/BPH issue. Never found a single patient with an abnormal value. Doesn’t mean that something isn’t happening at the receptor level, but systemically there seems to be no difference.

But the proof of concept remains valid — a stressed mammal gets an inflamed genitourinary tract. It is perhaps not the hormone prolactin that is affecting the rats’ prostates, but the stress itself, via the pelvic nerves. The finding that prolactin production increases may be incidental.

 

BODY FAT AMPS UP INFLAMMATION FROM STRESS

People who are overweight may be at greater risk for stress-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, according to a new study.

It’s long known that psychological stress can trigger biological responses similar to the effects of illness or injury, including inflammation. While normal inflammation is an important part of our body’s healing response, runaway inflammation can contribute to chronic and life-threatening diseases.

In a recently published paper in Brain, Behavior and Immunity, researchers report that overweight and obese individuals have higher levels of stress-induced inflammation than those within a healthy weight range.

“We’ve known that overweight and obese individuals already have chronic, low-grade inflammation,” says psychology professor Nicolas Rohleder, the study’s principal investigator. “Now, it seems that when you add stress to the mix, it’s a double hit.”

HIGHER BMI, HIGHER IL-6

The researchers measured interleukin-6 (IL-6), an inflammatory agent linked to stress, to evaluate inflammation levels in normal-weight and overweight individuals over the course of two psychological stress tests.

They classified weight based on several factors, including body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage. Individuals with a BMI of 25 or higher were classified as overweight.

On the first day of testing, lean and overweight individuals reacted similarly to stress, despite higher starting levels of IL-6 in overweight participants. On the second day of testing, however, the IL-6 levels of overweight participants nearly doubled, while the levels of lean participants remained the same as on the first day.

The researchers observed that the relationship between BMI and IL-6 levels was linear—the higher the BMI, even among lean individuals, the higher the IL-6.

“It seems that every percentage point of body fat makes your more susceptible to inflammation,” says Christine McInnis, a graduate student and study co-author.

With about two thirds of Americans classified as overweight, and worldwide obesity rates doubling since 1980, understanding the health risks of obesity could not be more important, says McInnis.

“We know that there are serious diseases associated with obesity. Now we are one step closer to understanding how and why,” she says.

The American Federation of Aging Research and training grants from the National Institute of Health funded the work.

Stress-induced hormones produced by the brain can increase an individual’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and accelerate the development of Alzheimer’s in individuals already suffering from the disease.

This study is the first to discover the precise mechanism that causes stress-induced Alzheimer’s disease.

When the brain is stressed, it produces steroids that can inhibit general brain activity. One of such steroids, allopregnanolon.

A research team conducted a laboratory experiment on mice genetically predisposed to developing Alzheimer’s disease. The mice were treated chronically with elevated allopregnanolone levels, comparable to those caused by mild stress. After a period of no steroid treatment, the mice were tested for learning and memory.

The mice with elevated levels of the stress steroid experienced impaired memory and learning in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s development, when they normally would     not display these symptoms. The brains of the mice also displayed higher levels of beta-amyloids, proteins that form plaques between nerve cells in the brains of individuals    with Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers noted that a similar acceleration of Alzheimer’s disease in humans due     to chronic stress could mean the difference between living independently and requiring professional care.

I always admired Pat Summitt because she was born the same day I was. Pat is perhaps best known for winning more games than any other NCAA Division 1 basketball coach, male or female.

Born: June 14, 1952, Clarksville, TN

Died: June 28, 2016, Knoxville, TN

She spent 38 years as the head coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team, the Lady Volunteers, winning eight national titles and 1,098 games. Tennessee also made 31 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances under Coach Summitt.

Summitt passed at the age of 64, after a five-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She will be remembered for her competitive spirit.

Telekinesis, Healing and The Egely Wheel.

Robert M. Schoch, a Ph.D. in geology and geophysics from Yale and an associate professor of Natural Science at a unit of Boston University, has written about his   belief in psychokinesis. His book “The Parapsychology Revolution:  A Concise Anthology”  takes a deep dive on the subject, with evidence pulled from the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab (PEAR).

PEAR conducted studies on extrasensory perception and psychokinesis starting in 1979. The lab’s founder, Robert G. Jahn, told The New York Times in 2007, “If people don’t believe us after all the results we’ve produced, then they never will.”

Scientists have found out that the power of mind can affect a variety of devices and liquid media such as highly precise chronometers, lasers, electrical generators of electromagnetic radiation, emulsions, colloids, water, etc.

In recent years after a number of experiments on telekinesis, Dr. Robert G. I remember my good friend Rosa Parkin, going from bedridden to active with a simple adrenaline rush or a physical feeling of intense excitement and stimulation caused by the release of adrenaline from the adrenal glands. Biological basis for telekinesis?

Many people believe there is physiological or psychological evidence for the human brain’s capacity to do far more than we imagine: after all, they say, we only use 10 percent of our brains. They claim that psychic powers, including telekinesis, are merely the result of psychics being able to use more of their brains than others. After all, they ask, what wonders could we accomplish by tapping the other 90 percent of our brains?
As tantalizing as the idea sounds, is only a myth. The fact is that we use all of our brains. Researchers have found that brain imaging research techniques such as PET scans (positron emission tomography) and fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) clearly show that the vast majority of the brain does not lie unused. In the book “50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology,” psychologist Scott Lilienfeld explains, “The last century has witnessed the advent of increasingly sophisticated technologies for snooping in the brain’s traffic. … Despite this detailed mapping, no quiet areas awaiting new assignments have emerged. In fact, even simple tasks generally require contributions of processing areas spread throughout virtually the whole brain.”

The history of telekinesis is a history of frauds and fakery, both proven and suspected. Even many researchers studying psychokinesis admit the data fall far short of scientific standards of proof. But they face an even bigger problem: there is no known mechanism by which the human mind could move or bend material objects. Even if our brain waves could somehow influence objects, the laws of physics demonstrate that the waves don’t extend beyond a few millimeters from the skull.

People who claim to have telekinesis are mostly a thing of the past. Of course, if people really did have the ability to move objects with their minds, they would likely not waste their time being tested in laboratories but instead becoming rich in Las Vegas altering  dice rolls at craps, or as top sports stars fixing golf shots.

Houdini exposed them

Harry Houdini, best known for his amazing magic and escape acts, tirelessly investigated and exposed fake mediums, and even wrote a book about it, “Miracle Mongers and Their Methods.”

As the public grew wise to the fake psychics, the phenomenon diminished — until the 1930s and 1940s, when a researcher at Duke University named J.B. Rhine became interested in the idea that people could affect the outcome of random events using their minds.

Rhine began with tests of dice rolls, asking subjects to try and influence the outcome through concentration. Though his results were mixed and hardly robust, they were enough to convince him that there was something mysterious going on. Unfortunately for Rhine his experiments failed a crucial scientific test, that of replicability: other researchers were unable to duplicate his findings. Errors were found in his methodology, and the topic faded away.

Psychokinesis popped back into the spotlight again three decades later with the emergence in the 1970s of a charismatic Israeli spoon-bender named Uri Geller.

Geller became the world’s best-known psychic superstar and made millions traveling the world demonstrating his claimed psychokinetic abilities. Though he denied using magic tricks, many skeptical researchers, including James “The Amazing” Randi, observed that all of Geller’s amazing feats could be — and have been — duplicated by magicians. Randi famously quipped, “If Geller is bending spoons with his mind, he’s doing it the hard way.”

Real evidence finally?

In 1976, several children who claimed to have psychokinetic powers were tested in controlled experiments at the University of Bath. Perhaps taking a cue from Geller, they claimed the ability to bend metal objects such as spoons. For a while the results seemed promising, and experimenters believed they might finally have found real scientific evidence of psychokinesis. Unfortunately, the children were caught cheating on hidden cameras, physically bending spoons with their hands — not their minds — when they thought no one was watching.

The Egely Wheel

 A tool I have been using for many years now has been a wonderful device called the Egely Wheel . What is it you ask?  Well, I would like to start at the beginning. Throughout my life I have been fascinated with energy and healing. In my early years I had read about great martial arts masters who could perform paranormal feats of strength and endurance from mastering an invisible force called chi. Later on in life I was fortunate to meet such masters who could confirm what I had spent years trying to achieve myself. So started a life long journey into the martial arts for me from karate, judo, qigong, tia chi, shinkendo to name a few. I would quite often find in the midst of combat during competition that every now and then my movements were taken over by something else and that the “moment’ became all that was experienced. During this time a wonderful energy would be felt through my hands and a type of ecstasy.

I then started to wonder what this energy looked like and how could it be used other than for combat.  So I explored kirlian photography for 12 years until I found PIP/NEV.  During this time I also came across the Egely Wheel. Finally a device that was invented to actually train you to project and control energy from your hands and fingers!!!!

The above picture is of me with my left hand trying to turn the wheel, having a severe left brain activation my resources were focused on analytical tasks and not imagination. So there is no definite energy pattern observed, as the wheel did not turn.

The above picture is of my right hand, pretty much straight after the left one. You can see the small green, purple and red lines coming out of my finger tips! this is the energy, chi, prana, ki….whatever you would like to call it! The wheel was spinning very fast at this stage. Notice in the bottom left of the picture a pool of orange/red energy is formed……this is also projected from the hand! The wheel will turn the fastest of the part of the brain that is being used the most. Perfect balance is left and right brain hemispheric synchronisation, in which the wheel turns equal for both left and right hands.

For years I had been able to capture what this energy looked like but now I could see it had an actual effect on matter!!!! by physically moving an object from using intention alone.

When Ellsworth Wareham was in his nineties, he decided that his house in Loma Linda, California — a beautiful city 60 miles east of Los Angeles, Spanish for “lovely hill” — needed a new fence. But rather than hire a contractor to install the wood fence, as most nonagenarians would no doubt do, Wareham went to the hardware store, bought the supplies he needed, and returned to dig some post holes.

Wareham proceeded to put the wood fence up himself. A few days later, Wareham was     in the hospital — performing open-heart surgery on a patient.

Some Adventists get personally offended if they get colon cancer or some other disease.

By many accounts, Wareham, now 98, has led a good, full, and meaningful life.           What  does he know that we don’t?

LOMA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — “The Gift of Time” is a fitting name for a clock shop in the Inland Empire enclave of Loma Linda as residents see more new days than practically any place else on earth.

Although lots of communities have centenarians, Loma Linda is a so-called “blue zone” designated by National Geographic as one of the five longest-living communities in the world.

The average life expectancy in Loma Linda is anything but average as residents are 10 times more likely to make it to 100.

“Mine would be around 89 years,” said Brian Bull, a blood researcher, pathologist and former dean of Loma Linda University Medical School. “Now being male automatically shortens my lifespan by about two years. Nothing I can do about that.”

But in Loma Linda, the average man makes it to 89 compared to the national average for men, which is 78. The average woman in Loma Linda lives to 91, which Bull says is “huge.”

“For the females in the general population, it’s about 81 years,” he explains.

But Loma Linda is not a general population community as it encompasses different   values and a different lifestyle centered around the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“I’m a lacto-ovo-vegetarian male Adventist,” said Bull, who at the age of 77 he has no regrets about giving up meat when he was 4. Back then, there was no science proving vegetarianism made people healthier.  However,  in his church meat eating has been discouraged for more than 150 years. 

“When it became obvious that Adventists were living a lot longer, even the federal government got curious as to why that might be the case,” he said.

Adventists preach that the body is a temple, and a typical Loma Linda breakfast      consists  of hot oatmeal or granola spiked with flax seed, nuts and plenty of berries.

Not only do Adventists live an average of 10 years longer, they also get less heart disease, cancer and disabilities.

A spin class at a local fitness center is as fierce as it gets and the regular riders                   are all over 60.

Bull says fitness, science and religion all work together in his hometown among Adventists.

“Science has always been looked upon with approval,” explained Bull, but never at           the expense of being observant as local businesses and labs close on Saturdays for the Sabbath.

“Saturday, which is the Sabbath. We go to church, meet with friends and family.”

During that time, attention turns away from making a living to other aspects of life.

“More important things. Where is your life going? Are you doing what you want to do?” Bull said.

Until 2011, Loma Linda got their weekend mail delivery Sunday rather than Saturday.

While science hasn’t proven whether observing the Sabbath on its own helps people live longer, Bull says it “wouldn’t be too surprising because I don’t think the human organism is designed to work seven days a week.”

Welebir, too, has no doubt following Adventist guidelines has contributed to her longevity and believes in always being happy.

“Like today, I had to have a bite of something sweet and then I felt I became sweeter myself in disposition,” she said.

Sweetness, too, may be a key to longevity, which is something Bull encourages in his        11-year-old granddaughter.

“We’re here to serve God, and we serve God best by serving our fellow man,” he said.

It’s not a bathing-suit body that Daniel and Vicki Fontoura and their neighbors are after as they go about their days in perhaps the healthiest community in the United States. It’s something so much more essential, a part of their very being.

The Fontouras, their three children and Daniel’s parents are among the 22,000 residents of Loma Linda, where as many as a third of the people are Seventh-day Adventists. Their faith instructs them to treat their bodies as temples: little or no meat or fish, no smoking or alcohol, plenty of exercise and a sense of purpose.

Spend a little time in Loma Linda, and what distinguishes it from, say, the adjacent city of San Bernardino becomes apparent.

The Loma Linda Market near Loma Linda University has bin after bin of beans and grains; there’s no meat section. There is a McDonald’s in a shopping center, but it moved in only after a fight; the arches are demure, and a countertop poster advertises veggie burgers.

Studies have shown that Seventh-day Adventists, who have a broad range of ethnic backgrounds, live as much as a decade longer than the rest of us, which led to Loma Linda being identified as one of five longevity spots, called Blue Zones, on the planet and the only one in the United States.

“I don’t think we’re so bold as to say that the only way to have this eight- to 10-year advantage is to be an Adventist,” said Fontoura, vice president/chief wholeness officer at Loma Linda University Health. “We do view it as the core. But how people get there is up to them.”

Active longer

About 96,000 people have been enrolled in an ongoing study, and 26% of them are African American, a generally under-studied population, says Dr. Michael Orlich, who specializes in preventive medicine and is studying the effects of lifestyle on mortality at Loma Linda University Medical Center, part of the 110-year-old Loma Linda University Health System, which includes eight professional schools and six hospitals

Loma Linda also has started to study how an active faith affects overall resilience.

“Health reform was in the DNA of the Seventh-day Adventists,” Orlich says.

But even in Loma Linda, there’s only so much that can be controlled. Also under study, Orlich says, is the effect of smog.  Loma Linda also sits at the base of mountains all too frequently obscured by haze. The early information, he says, “looks pretty scary, to tell  you the truth.”

The Seventh-day Adventist church in this sunny pocket of Southern California was founded in the 1840s. The church flourished through the 20th century – and so did its 430_LomaLindamembers who view health as central to their faith.

Today, a community of about 9,000 Adventists in the Loma Linda area are the core of America’s Blue Zone. They live as much as a decade longer than the rest of us, and much of their longevity can be attributed to vegetarianism and regular exercise. Plus, Adventists don’t smoke or drink alcohol.

How can you live like the American longevity all-stars? Try these tactics practiced in Loma Linda to live measurably longer.

Find a sanctuary in time.

A weekly break from the rigors of daily life, the 24-hour Sabbath provides a time to focus on family, God, camaraderie, and nature. Adventists claim this relieves their stress, strengthens social networks, and provides consistent exercise.

Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI).

Adventists with healthy BMI’s (meaning they have an appropriate weight for their heights) who keep active and eat meat sparingly, if at all, have lower blood pressure, lower blood cholesterol , and less cardiovascular disease than heavier Americans with higher BMIs.

The Adventist Health Survey (AHS) shows that you don’t need to be a marathoner to maximize your life expectancy. Getting regular, low-intensity exercise like daily walks appear to help reduce your chance of having heart disease and certain cancers.

Spend time with like-minded friends.

Adventists tend to spend time with lots of other Adventists. They find well-being by sharing each other’s values and supporting each other’s habits.

Snack on nuts.

Adventists who consume nuts at least five times a week have about half the risk of heart disease and live about two years longer than those who don’t. At least four major studies have confirmed that eating nuts has an impact on health and life expectancy.

Give something back.

Like many faiths, the Seventh-day Adventist Church encourages and provides opportunities for its members to volunteer. People like centenarian Marge Jetton stay active, find sense of purpose, and stave off depression by focusing on helping others.

Eat meat in moderation.

Many Adventists follow a vegetarian diet. The AHS shows that consuming fruits and vegetables and whole grains seems to be protective against a wide variety of cancers. For those who prefer to eat some meat, Adventist recommend small portions served as a side dish rather than as the main meal.

Eat an early, light dinner.

“Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper,” American nutritionist Adelle Davis is said to have recommended –an attitude also reflected in Adventist practices. A light dinner early in the evening avoids flooding the body with calories during the inactive parts of the day. It seems to promote better sleep and a lower BMI.

Put more plants in your diet.

Nonsmoking Adventists who ate 2 or more servings of fruit per day had about 70 percent fewer lung cancers than nonsmokers who ate fruit once or twice a week. Adventists who ate legumes such as peas and beans 3 times a week had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in colon cancer. Adventists women who consumed tomatoes at least 3 or 4 times a week reduced their chance of getting ovarian cancer by 70 percent over those who ate tomatoes less often. Eating a lot of tomatoes also seemed to have an effect on reducing prostate cancer for men.

Drink plenty of water.

The AHS suggests that men who drank 5 or 6 daily glasses of water had a substantial reduction in the risk of a fatal heart attack –60 to 70 percent–compared to those who drank considerably less.

Exercise to Fight Cancer

 If there’s one thing you need to know about cancer, it’s that most types of it do not have a strong genetic cause.

That means that despite what you may have heard, one of the most effective ways to prevent cancer isn’t a breakthrough drug… or radical surgery.

It’s not even a natural supplement.

In fact, the latest research states that up to 70 percent of cancer cases could be prevented by “a broad range of interventions at multiple levels.”

To put it plainly: simple lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce your risk for cancer!

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard that quitting smoking – or never taking it up in the first place – is a great way to reduce your odds of getting cancer. And you may even know that limiting the amount of alcohol you drink and maintaining a healthy body weight can do the same.

But, my friend, there’s yet another powerful way to prevent cancer that people aren’t talking about nearly enough… and that can be BLOCKBUSTER for cancer prevention, when combined with these other lifestyle changes.

I’m talking about exercise.

Now, before you groan at the mere mention of exercise, let me explain what a PROFOUND difference it can make.

Higher levels of physical activity have been found to reduce the risk of HALF the types of cancers reviewed in an analysis of data from more than a million Europeans and Americans.

The cancers that were most impacted by exercise included three of the most common cancers in the U.S. – lung, breast, and colorectal cancer – as well as:

  • esophageal
  • liver
  • kidney
  • stomach
  • endometrial
  • myeloid leukemia (blood and bone marrow) and myeloma (bone marrow)
  • head and neck
  • bladder

And it reduced the risk of developing those cancers significantly – by at least 10 percent to as much as 42 percent.

Regular exercise appears to lower your cancer risk in a variety of ways – but primarily by balancing your hormones, boosting your immunity, reducing inflammation, and clearing out the toxins that may cause cancer in the first place.

For example, women who are physically active tend to have lower levels of estrogen – a hormone that, at high levels, are strongly associated specifically with breast and endometrial cancer.

Not only that, but when the hormone insulin continuously spikes due to poor blood sugar control, it fuels cancer cells.

Insulin spikes can also suppress the immune system, as does the “stress” hormone cortisol – and, if you’re at risk for developing cancer, you need your immunity to stay in prime condition, ready for battle.

But exercise has been proven to BOOST your immune system – thereby strengthening your ability to FIGHT OFF those cancer cells so they don’t develop into cancerous tumors.

We are bombarded with tens of thousands of man-made chemicals in our environment, with many of them known to be carcinogenic – that is, to cause cancer. But exercise reduces the inflammation that almost always accompanies toxicity – and that is strongly associated with most cancers.

When you exercise, it improves blood flow through your organs – particularly those involved in detoxification, such as the kidneys and liver, making sure those toxins get filtered and moved OUT of your body rather than hanging around and causing trouble. Even mild physical activity can also make you sweat, and sweating gives toxins yet another way out of your body – through your skin.

You can benefit from exercise that’s as little as a half hour of “moderate” intensity activity just five days a week, according to a study recently published in JAMA Oncology. Moderate activity is something you’d be able to talk while doing – but maybe not sing. That means walking briskly… gardening… golfing… and even playing with the grandkids.

So much has been written about using diet and supplements to lower your risk of developing cancer that it could fill a
library. But if you, or a loved one, have already been diagnosed with cancer, recovery is, naturally, your focus.
Unfortunately, finding tips on what to do after a diagnosis isn’t nearly as easy. But there’s actually plenty you can do
to cut down on the side effects of conventional cancer treatments, speed your recovery, and improve your odds of
long-term survival.
Conventional oncologists know very little about nutrition, so they rarely make any dietary recommendations. Even
worse, some oncologists tell patients there’s no relationship between their diet and cancer.
The truth is your diet can make all the difference between recovering or succumbing to this ugly disease. And when it
comes to supplements, oncologists tend to be downright hostile, believing that vitamins and herbs will interfere with
conventional treatments or have no benefit. Nothing could be further from the truth.
After surgery you’re at a higher risk for nutritional deficiencies (even if you didn’t have preexisting ones), particularly
when it comes to vitamins C and B12. And there’s plenty of research showing that both during and after chemo,
supplements are beneficial. The research on taking supplements during radiation therapy is less clear, but still
valuable in my clinical experience.1,2,3
The veggie “secret” to beating back cancer
As emotionally devastating as a cancer diagnosis is, it’s also an opportunity to change your diet for the better
improving not only your quality of life but your long-term survival. Of course most veggies are packed with good-for you
nutrients. For example, they’re anti-inflammatory, which is important because inflammation causes cancer cells
to multiply. Antioxidants also turn on helpful genes while turning off disease-promoting ones.
I recommend piling on the vegetables, and mixing them up while you’re at it. The biggest nutritional bang for your
buck comes from organic (pesticide-free) cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. They’re rich
in various anti-cancer compounds, and they also help your body break down, or detoxify, harmful chemicals. Fill at
least half of your plate with veggies, with the rest being quality protein (fish, organically raised chicken) and a bit of
gluten-free starch.
Detox & boost immunities with healing juice
Fresh vegetable juices are an important part of a cancer-fighting diet. The phytonutrients found in plants provide a
concentrated source of immune boosting, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying agents. You can blend your vegetables
together in water or water combined with a small amount of coconut or almond milk. If you’re not a fan of the taste of
vegetable juices, or you just want to mix things up a bit, feel free to add a small amount of fresh fruit juice to the mix.
Great vegetable-juice choices include kale, collard greens, tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, cabbage, carrots, beets,
barley green, wheat grass, and berries. Start with six ounces daily of three or more of these anticancer foods and
work up to 24 ounces or more a day.
Going green to give cancer a run for its money
There are a stack of studies showing green tea’s ability to fight cancer including breast, prostate, esophagus,
stomach, colon, lung, skin, liver, bladder, ovary, mouth, and blood cancers. A Japanese study found that five or more
cups of green tea a day could slash the risk of blood and lymph-based cancers by about 50%.4
Green tea contains a powerful group of antioxidants known as polyphenols that prevent free radicals (unstable
molecules) from damaging cell DNA and tissues of the body. If you’re undergoing chemotherapy or radiation check
with your oncologist about the most recent research on green tea to make sure it’s compatible with your therapy.
Slash the sugar and shrink the carbs to beat cancer
Cancer thrives on sugar. To beat cancer it’s critical that you cut back on refined sugars, potatoes, and other
processed carbohydrates (sweets, white bread, pizza, pasta, bagels). Our bodies convert refined carbs to glucose
and glucose is the favorite fuel source of cancer cells. These carb-laden foods increase insulin-like growth factor and
blood sugar levels, which appear to cause many cancers to grow.5
Once you’ve slashed your carbs you may be tempted to turn to artificial sweeteners to satisfy your sweet tooth. In
one word… don’t. The fake sugar trap can fool you into blissfully gobbling down sweeteners while exposing you to
suspected carcinogens.
Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School found a frightening link between
drinking more than one serving of diet soda a day and an increased risk of developing leukemia, multiple myeloma,
and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas.6

Science-backed supplements can help you kick cancer
I’m not going to tell you taking a supplement will simply cure your cancer because that’s (generally) just not true. But
what supplements CAN do is give your quality of life a big boost and, even better, send your survival odds
skyrocketing. But this isn’t something you should tackle on your own. Seek out the advice of an expert who can tailor
a supplement program for your specific needs.
If you’re a cancer patient, or are in remission, I urge you to seek the guidance of a nutritionally oriented ND or MD.
But I believe an informed patient is the best kind of patient…and your doctor should too… so let’s go over some
cancer-busting supplement basics.
Vital vitamin D lowers your cancer risk
Vitamin D is a real cancer-fighting superstar. This vital vitamin can help cut your cancer risk and support your
recovery after a diagnosis. I find that most cancer patients are deficient in D and a medical history often reveals that
they were likely deficient before their diagnosis as well.
In a recent study researchers found that leukemia and lymphoma patients were deficient in vitamin D before their
diagnosis, and their deficiencies became worse after being treated with chemotherapy.7
 In another study, scientists
found that low D levels can raise your chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer.8
And a brand new report in the
journal Anticancer Research found that breast cancer survivors with the highest vitamin D levels had HALF the death
rate of those with low levels! 9
But the benefits of vitamin D go so much further. More than 60 studies have found that high levels of vitamin D are
associated with a lower risk of certain cancers, including those of the breast, prostate, colon, and lung, as well as
leukemia and myeloma.10,11,12,13,14
 I typically recommend 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily with food, and more if your levels
are below 50 (your doctor can run tests to determine your current numbers). Aim for a blood level of vitamin D of at
least 50 ng/ml.
Omega-3 “miracle worker” could slash your cancer risk
Like vitamin D, omega-3s (found in fish oils) are cancer fighters. They are anti-inflammatory, which means they
essentially dampen down the biological craziness of cancer cells. And recent research revealed that omega-3s could
cut your risk of breast cancer by up to one-third—as well as play an important role in treatment.15,16
In another study of women treated for metastatic breast cancer, researchers discovered that large amounts of
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—one of the fatty acids found in fish oil—led to a significant increase in survival.17
 In other words, DHA literally saved lives!
Other studies have found that high-dose omega-3s combined with chemotherapy have significant benefits for patients
with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).18
This is important because NSCLC has such a poor prognosis with conventional treatment alone.
 The omega-3s also help cancer patients maintain their weight. 19,20
For breast cancer patients, I typically recommend taking 1,800 mg of DHA daily. For non-small cell lung cancer, I
usually suggest taking approximately 2.2 grams of EPA and 240 mg of DHA daily. And for other types of cancer, I
suggest taking 1,000 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 1,000 mg of DHA.
Douse cancer-related inflammation with curcumin
Curcumin, an extract of turmeric root, is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory substances found in nature.
Researchers at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Treatment Center in Houston, Texas, have studied its anticancer
properties and are using it as an adjunct treatment for some cancer patients. One published report by the Center’s
researchers notes that curcumin blocks inflammatory processes though 97 different mechanisms!
Cancer studies have used 2 to 8 grams of curcumin daily with moderate success. In my own practice, I recommend a
variety of supplements, which I think are far better than using just curcumin alone. I typically suggest taking 1500-
3,000 mg daily of a well-absorbed form of curcumin. Retail brands to consider include Nature’s Way, Natural Factors,

Antioxidant powerhouse may help you live longer
Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like nutrient that your cells need to function. This powerful antioxidant is needed for
normal energy production. There’s considerable evidence that cancer involves abnormalities in cellular energy
production, so CoQ10 might work in part by helping to re-normalize cell metabolism. The anticancer benefits of this
nutrient first attracted my attention around 20 years ago, after a Danish physician published case histories
demonstrating CoQ10’s benefits for cancer patients. 21,22
In a more recent study, a different Danish physician described his treatment of 41 patients with a variety of end-stage
cancers including primary breast, esophagus, lung, pancreas, and prostate cancers. In all cases, the cancers had
metastasized to other organs. The doctor’s regimen provided 300 mg of CoQ10, plus several other nutrients. Threefourths
of the patients lived an average of five months longer than expected, and some patients survived years longer
than expected!23
I typically suggest taking 300 to 400 mg of CoQ10 to my own patients.
Is multitasking selenium the key to cancer survival?
Selenium is an essential mineral that’s needed to make glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme involved in the liver’s
detoxification of harmful chemicals. But several studies have found that it can also help protect women who have
inherited a mutation in a gene, BRCA1, which significantly increases their risk of breast cancer. In one of those
studies, a team of Canadian and European researchers took a look at white blood cells obtained from 26 women with
BRCA1 mutations. Those cells had a high rate of abnormalities, but after three months of selenium supplements the
number of cell abnormalities dropped to normal levels. 24
A second and even more significant study, this time of 200 women with the BRCA1 mutation, found that women
taking selenium supplements over a two-year period had an astounding two times lower risk of developing breast
cancer!25,26
 With incredible results like that, if selenium had been a new drug the study would have made headlines
around the world. But, instead, it was virtually ignored.
I typically recommend 200 mcg of selenium a day. This is the amount found in many multivitamin and mineral
supplements.
Barking up a tree to beat cancer
Honokiol, an extract of the bark of the magnolia tree (Magnolia officinalis), appears to have significant anticancer
properties. Although the emerging research so far has been conducted mostly on cells and animals, 139 journal
articles have been published on this exciting therapy, giving honokiol a respectable scientific foundation.
It’s believed that this all-natural, cancer-fighting weapon works by choking off tumors, denying them the nutrients they
need to survive. And unlike many conventional cancer treatments honokiol is thought to bypass healthy cells,
targeting only the sick cancer cells. Many naturopathic physicians in the United States are recommending this
supplement to their cancer patients. The suggested dosage is 9 grams daily.27,28,29,30,31
Critical antioxidant boosts cancer-fighting cells
Glutathione is critical to normal cell function including cell division and a healthy cell life cycle. And now, emerging
research has revealed the antioxidant also plays a role in ridding the body of carcinogenic environmental toxins.
A recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition looked at the effects of a specific type of oral
glutathione (Setria) on 54 healthy adults. The study found that 1000 mg a day of glutathione increased red blood cell
levels between 30 and 35 percent overall. Glutathione levels, measured in cheek cells rose, by 260% and doses as
low as 250 mg daily also increased the antioxidants levels.32
 This is important because previous studies have found
poor absorption rates with other glutathione products.
In addition, after three months special cancer-fighting cells—known as natural killer cells—had doubled in activity
compared to placebo!33
The glutathione also helped protect cells by reduced oxidative stress.
I typically recommend 500 to 1000 mg daily on an empty stomach.
I’ve also seen great results using intravenous glutathione in cancer patients who have finished their chemotherapy.
Glutathione helped to restore their energy, brain function, and immunity after the harsh treatment. For intravenous
use I recommend 1600 to 2000 mg by IV in a series of 5 to ten treatments.
Target tumors with fermented wheat germ extract
I often recommend fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) to patients with cancer. A solid stack of human research—
more than 100 studies published in over 20 peer-reviewed medical journals—has shown that FWGE helps fight
cancer. The benefits in these studies were crystal clear… FWGE improves quality of life, overall survival and diseasefree
survival.
FWGE fights cancer in several ways. It reduces the supply of glucose (sugar) to cancer cells making it harder for the
tumors to survive. It also reduces a certain protein found on cancer cells making it easier for your immune system to
find and target the tumor. And, finally, it enhances your immune system response against tumors.
Research has revealed that FWGE is beneficial in fighting colorectal, breast, melanoma, lung, and oral
cancers.34,35,36,37
It has also been shown to reduce infections in kids and teens undergoing chemotherapy.38
I typically recommend one packet containing 8.5 to 9 g of FWGE daily, mixed with eight ounces cold water or any
other beverage that containing less than 10 mg vitamin C per eight-ounce serving. Store the packets at room
temperature or in the refrigerator. FWGE is also available in tablets. The typical tablet dosage is 5 tabs/capsules,

Supercharge your immunities with medicinal mushrooms
American doctors are often surprised to find that medicinal mushroom extracts are commonly administered as drugs,
both orally and intravenously, by Chinese and Japanese oncologists (in addition to their common use by herbalists
and traditional practitioners in those countries).
Fortunately these same powerful mushroom extracts are available as dietary supplements in the United States. There
are a number of mushroom extracts which are used to supercharge the immune system. The best studied include
maitake and coriolus versicolor.
Mushroom extracts contain compounds known as beta glucans which have the unique ability to stimulate your
immune system to work better. They do this by increasing the number of cancer killing immune cells as well as their
activity. There have been many published studies demonstrating their benefits for people with cancer. They even
have been proven safe and effective for people receiving chemotherapy or radiation.
Maitake is most helpful for fighting cancers of the breast, prostate, liver, and lung. It can also be used to reduce the
side effects of chemotherapy. For example, a survey of 671 patients found that combining chemotherapy with
maitake treatment reduced adverse reactions (such as hair loss, pain, and nausea) as well as reduced the pain of
terminal stage cancer.39
Coriolus is best used for cancers of the esophagus, lung, stomach, and colon cancer. In a study of 650 cancer
patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation the mushroom was able to significantly slash side effects.40
Combine supplements for the best cancer-fighting impact
Most of the studies I’ve mentioned here used only a single nutritional supplement. However, in my experience taking
multiple supplements to combat cancer and relieve symptoms has a greater impact. Of course the best results occur
when you combine supplements with diet and lifestyle changes. A holistic medical doctor can personalize a cancerfighting
plan for you.
Read this BEFORE your next barbecue!
Since barbecues are as American as apple pie I know this next bit of advice is going to be tough to hear for many
folks. The fact is, if you want to cut your cancer risk you’re going to have to also cut back on your grilling habit.
Charring meats, the blacking you see when they’re cooked on the grill, produces carcinogens. You should cut back
on red meat anyhow, since having too much in your diet is linked with certain cancers.

Cancer ‘Miracle’ Survivors: What Do They Have in Common?

Spontaneous remission of cancer for no known medical reason, called “radical remission,” befuddles conventional doctors so much that the subject isn’t even studied.

Most of the time, doctors don’t even try to explain it.
“For every one case that’s published in medical journals, a hundred more go unpublished,” estimates Kelly Turner, who has exhaustively researched the subject for the past decade for her eye-opening new book, “Radical Remission: The Nine Key Factors That Can Make a Real Difference.”
She set out to uncover the commonalities among unlikely cancer survivors. What was it about these “miracle” patients that allows them to live when so many others with the same type of cancer perish?
Turner identified nine top factors that were common among the beneficiaries of radical remissions.
She emphasizes that her findings are not a prescription to beat cancer. “All I can say,” she tells Newsmax Health, “is this is what these people did.”
No. 1: Radically changing diet. Survivors often eliminated chemicals and other toxins found in refined food, and avoided ingredients that may contribute to cancer growth.
The diet adjustments fell into four key areas:
  • Reducing or eliminating sugar, meat, dairy, and refined foods.
  • Increasing vegetables and fruit.
  • Eating organic foods to help get rid of toxins.
  • Drinking lots of filtered water instead of soda, juice, or milk.
The intake of fruits and vegetables was high, up to 15 or 20 servings daily, including raw, lightly steamed or roasted, and/or juiced versions.
A typical plate would be half to three-quarters vegetables and fruits, and some also drank juiced green vegetables.
The remainder of the plate would contain protein and minimal whole grains, if any. Some people omitted gluten, and some juiced other vegetables, such as cabbage.
To eliminate toxins, some people occasionally did fasts lasting three to seven days, typically under the supervision of a holistic health practitioner or nutritionist.
No. 2: Taking control. “We’re taught to be patients, be there quietly and do what we’re told,” says Turner. But cancer survivors essentially became the CEOs of their own healthcare, educating themselves on the meaning of test results, getting copies of their medical records, and tracking progress.
As an example, one man with stage 4 prostate cancer had his prostate removed but continued to have rising PSA tests, indicating unrelenting growth of cancer. Although death seemed imminent, he started experimenting with his diet and tracking his PSA results. Seeing that certain foods lowered his PSA, and adjusting his diet accordingly, helped him survive.
No. 3: Following intuition. Acting on a gut feeling in making decisions took many forms, but was a consistent factor. One survivor quit a job he felt was “killing him.”
Another moved out of a house that she felt was not healthy, and later learned of toxic mold in the building, which may have contributed to the cancer. Another person felt the need to move to a sunny climate, without realizing that low vitamin D from lack of sunlight is linked to cancer.
 
No. 4: Using herbs and supplements. “There was no one magic bullet,” says Turner. Most often, people worked with naturopathic doctors, herbalists trained in traditional Chinese medicine, or nutritionists, who used blood tests to determine which supplements and herbs were best.
Some people didn’t have access to these types of health professionals and instead educated themselves about nutrients and herbs, finding what worked for them. Turner studied people all over the world, and choices of herbs were typically influenced by what was common in a given region.
No. 5: Releasing suppressed emotions. Unloading emotional baggage played a key role for survivors. Emotions fell into two categories: past and future. Grief or anger, for example, often related to past situations, such as divorce or other traumatic or stressful times. Fear of uncertainty in the future and stress were understandably common. All of these have been shown to weaken the immune system, which reduces the ability of a human body to heal from cancer.

 Survivors dealt with emotions in many different ways. Some worked with therapist, while others used a journal, or took courses that helped them manage stress and let go of emotions that gripped them and blocked healing.

No. 6: Increasing positive emotions. Many survivors made a point of doing something each day that made them happy, at least for a few minutes. For example, happiness for some came from spending time with grandchildren. For others, it meant doing more work in the garden, taking flying lessons, or simply taking a long walk.
No. 7: Embracing social support. “Everybody said ‘As soon as I was diagnosed, I had this outpouring of love and support from my family that touched me so much, I know it helped me heal,’” says Turner. On the flip side, survivors also found there were certain people they felt they should avoid.
One woman, says Turner, put it this way: “If I felt drained after being with a person, I stopped hanging out with them. If I felt energized, I made a second date.”
No. 8: Deepening spiritual connection. “According to my research, it doesn’t matter who or what you believe in,” says Turner; “What matters is if you have a spiritual practice.” The key, she says, was doing something that brought about a connection to what was often described as “divine energy.”
Among survivors, practices took many shapes. For some, it was practicing their faith. For others it was meditation, a nature walk, or watching the sun rise.
No. 9: Having strong reasons for living. “Some people go through cancer saying ‘I don’t want to die,’” says Turner, “But the people who tend to survive say “I want to live, I want to live, I’ll do anything, I just want to live.’”
This held true, she says, even if the medical odds of survival were only a fraction of one percent. Reasons for living varied greatly, from a passion for travel to wanting to know one’s grandchildren or writing a novel.

17 Years Later, Stage 4 Survivor

Each year on a day in January — the 15th, to be precise — I go to a Web site and post a message to hundreds of women I’ve never met, saying, essentially, “I’m still here.”

Within days, a thunderous chorus comes back, 200 voices, 300. A few of them ask, “How can this be?” Sometimes they begin, “I’m crying.” Many answer in kind: “I’m here, too. It’s now three years.” “Five years.” “Three months.” “Seven.”

What we’re doing, in a way, is checking for lights in the darkness.

Now there probably aren’t a lot of Web sites where the announcement that you’re around and breathing would cause anyone to take notice, let alone respond. But this is a site for people with Stage 4 breast cancer, something I’ve had for 17 years. The average life expectancy with the diagnosis is 30 months, so this is a little like saying I’m 172 years old: seemingly impossible. But it’s not. I first found I had the illness in 1988, and it was rediagnosed as Stage 4 in 1993. That’s 22 years all together, which is the reason I post each year on the anniversary of the day I learned my cancer was back: to let women know that it happens, that people do live with this for years.

I tell them that when the cancer returned, it came on so fast, spread so quickly, that I was given a year or two to live. Within months, the disease turned vicious. It started breaking bones from within, and was coming close to severing my spinal cord.

Nothing was working, till a doctor tried a hormone treatment no one used much anymore, and the cancer turned and retreated, snarling. It remains sluggish but active. Every so often, it rears its head; when it does, we switch treatments and it slides back down. In that way, I stay alive.

I tell them: you just don’t know.

Two and a half years after the Stage 4 diagnosis, I confessed to my mother that the doctors had said I had two years to live, tops. I’d kept this information to myself because if you say it, it’s true. I told her this laughing, as if we were trading preposterous stories. “Well, I guess you’re going to have to hold your breath if you’re going to make that deadline,” she replied, in her slow Southern drawl when I gave my previously stated expiration date.

I spent the next five years holding my breath, then did the same for another five. I enacted every New Year’s resolution, past and future, all at once. Quit work that had grown stale and became a writer. Wrote a book. Went to India on assignment, fell in love with the language that was swirling around me, went back to live for a year and learn Hindi. Didn’t realize the reason I’d come to dislike that hyperbolically overachieving Lance Armstrong was that his behavior was too familiar. Take a nap, Lance! I’d think to myself, though in truth I couldn’t either.

But if I was verging on radical levels of life consumption, I had a reason: No one had told me I wasn’t going to die soon. About 12 years out, my doctor finally did.

There’s a small subcategory of people with Stage 4 breast cancer, it turned out, who live for years and years. “Twenty. Thirty,” said my doctor, George Raptis. This group constitutes about 2 percent of all cases. Doctors can’t predict who will fall into this category. They can’t say you’re in it till you’re in it — till you’ve racked up the necessary miles.

The reason they can’t is that for all the pink-ribbon hoopla, despite the hundreds of millions that have been poured into breast cancer research, hardly anyone has looked into the why of long-distance survival; not one doctor has specialized in this field.

Here’s pretty much the sum of collective knowledge: People in this group tend to have disease that has spread to the bone (as opposed to lung or liver, say) and feeds on estrogen. They tend to do well on hormone treatments. End of commonly known story.

But as Dr. Gabriel N. Hortobagyi at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston stated, that you can  find women  whose breast cancer  also spread to organs  other  than bone,   for whom hormone therapy did exactly nothing, who had their lesions surgically excised and who have been free of cancer for 30 years. None of these women could have expected to live.

You just don’t know, and neither, unfortunately, does the medical field.

One reason, as the breast surgeon Dr. Susan Love told me, is that “many clinical trials    are funded  by the drug companies to run for five years,”obviously not enough if  you’re investigating long-term survivors. But through her institute, the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, she has begun to conduct research.

Dr. Love said she was inspired by a colleague who told her that in World War II, aviation experts focused on planes that went down until someone said, “Why aren’t we studying the planes that stay up in the air?” By no means a reflexive optimist, she thinks there’s hope we’ll find a cure.
On the Web site, I tell the women how deeply I believe there’s no such thing as false hope: all hope is valid, even for people like us, even when hope would no longer appear to be sensible.
Life itself isn’t sensible, I say. No one can say with ultimate authority what will happen — with cancer, with a job that appears shaky, with all reversed fortunes — so you may as well seize all glimmers that appear.

I write to them (to myself) that of course this is tough: the waiting to see if the shadows  are multiplying, the physical pain, the bouts with terrible blackness.

“But there can be joy in this life, too,” I say, “and that’s so important to remember. This disease does not invalidate us. This past year, I’ve had the joy of falling in love with my sister’s kids, who live states away and whom I hadn’t had the chance to know. I’ve had a second book come out, one I worked on for eight years, about going to live in India with Stage 4 cancer. I’ve had so many moments of joy this year, but when I’m in blackness, I forget about those.” Then I ask them to write and tell me about theirs, and lights begin to flash.

“Had a pajama party with my oldest friend, laughing through the night in matching pajamas about old times.”

“Came in second in a bridge tournament.”

“I went on a wonderful camping trip with my family.”

“Seeing my older daughter grow taller than me. She’s now 5-9.”

One thing I don’t ever think to say: When I was told I had a year or two, I didn’t want anything one might expect: no blow-out trip to the Galápagos, no perfect meal at Alain Ducasse, no defiant red Maserati. All I wanted was ordinary life back, for ordinary life,      it became utterly clear, is more valuable than anything else. I don’t think to say it, and         I never will.

Katherine Russell Rich (November 17, 1955 – April 3, 2012) was also an American autobiographical writer from New York City.  Her first book, The Red Devil: To Hell with Cancer, and Back,  told of a clash of cultures  occurring  when  the  author’s breast cancer treatment caused her to lose her hair just when both romantic and professional difficulties came to a head. She had wanted the book to be called Chemosabe.[2]

Her book Dreaming in Hindi: Coming Awake in Another Language, details a year         she spent in India on assignment for The New York Times. Having been sent there to interview the Dalai Lama‘s doctor,[3] her assignment turned into a journey of linguistic awakening and of self-discovery.[4] It was nominated for the 2011 Dolman Travel Book Award.

Rich’s articles were featured in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine,   The Washington Post, The Oregonian, O: The Oprah Magazine, Vogue and Salon.  She received several grants and fellowships,  including ones from  New York Foundation for the Arts, the New York Public Library’s Center for Scholars and Writers, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and a Guggenheim Fellowship (2011).[1]

Rich was interviewed for and was the subject of the third act of This American Life radio blog Episode 425, which aired on January 21, 2011. [5]

An experimental drug helped Sharon Belvin, who was diagnosed with melanoma in her lung when she was 22 and spent two years in standard treatment. The drug is called ipilimumab, and it aims to trigger the immune system against cancer.

Within four months, her lung tumors started to shrivel. By late 2006, they were gone. Today Belvin, now 27, is off all treatment. She spends her time with her husband and 1-year-old daughter, Lilly Elizabeth, whom she calls “a miracle baby, after all we have  been through.”

Why do some patients beat the odds? Some go on experimental medicines that help them, but few others.  Others take novel combinations of approved drugs  that are too toxic for most to endure. The most mysterious cases of all are so-called spontaneous remissions, where tumors vanish without any treatment. Only a handful of such cases are reported in the medical literature each year.

Each year, 566,000 Americans die of cancer. In 2004, cancer treatments cost $72 billion, according to the most recent National Cancer Institute report. And by all accounts, they have since soared.

The Agency for Healthcare research and Quality (AHRQ) estimates that the direct medical costs (total of all health care costs) for cancer in the US in 2014 were $87.7 billion.  A  2014 study examining the costs of surgery involving various types of cancer found average costs ranging from $14,161 to $56,587. The costs included admissions, readmissions, physician services and other costs (outpatient visits, hospice care, home health agencies or medical equipment).

That some patients respond better to certain drugs than others is a focus of furious scrutiny at top labs. The reasons include everything from the immune system, to the particular mutations in a given tumor, to the sensitivity of stem cells inside a tumor           to treatment.

One big reason why some patients do better than others is that their tumors may have particular sets of mutations that make them exquisitely sensitive to one drug or another. These rare responders tell us that “there are some very unique, relatively tumor-specific mutations that must be occurring in these cancers that are therapeutically exploitable,” says oncologist Ronald Natale of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Researchers are just beginning to discover the gene mutations that influence drug response. For example, about 10% of lung cancer patients have certain mutations in a protein called EGFR that make them far more likely to respond to Genentech‘s Tarceva. Meanwhile, oncologists showed last year that about 40% of colon cancer patients whose tumors have a mutation in a gene called kras never respond to the popular Erbitux from Eli Lilly .

Some researchers are even working to personalize treatment by implanting tumors directly from patients into lab mice and then seeing which drug combinations work best. This method, says Johns Hopkins University oncologist David Sidransky, may allow drug companies to perform trials of drugs on mice with human tumors to help pinpoint which drug combinations will work best against which types of tumor mutations.

Scientists are also finding tantalizing evidence that the immune system sometimes kicks  in to play a role in combating cancer. This has been hotly debated for decades–and indeed many scientists remain unconvinced.  But rare cases of spontaneous remission sometimes do occur, particularly in melanoma, kidney cancer and a few other tumors.

That’s what Charles Burrows experienced. In November 2005, he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and given two months to live. Then, three months later, without any treatment, his tumor simply vanished. The case was so unusual that his doctors published it in a medical journal last year. Says Burrows, “I won a lottery, and I don’t understand why.”

While numerous explanations have been proposed for these mysterious remissions,       one of the likeliest is that the body’s immune system gets involved.

A spontaneous remission is “either divine intervention or the immune system,” says     Jedd D. Wolchok, an oncologist at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. It’s also possible that ordinary cancer survivors, people who beat the disease after getting radiation, chemotherapy or surgery, get an assist from their own immune systems.

Big drug companies, including Pfizer , Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi-Aventis ,             are doggedly pursuing drugs that aim to boost the immune system to fight cancer. GlaxoSmithKline is in final-stage tests  of a vaccine to prevent lung cancer  from        coming back after surgery.

Easier said than done, of course. Some patients, apparently, need only a small trigger       to also propel a massive anti-cancer attack. With most others, the cancer cells fight back successfully and even co-opt immune cells to aid their growth. Some tumors may simply be more visible to the immune system than others. In addition, there are also numerous molecular brakes inside the body that keep the immune system from rampaging out of control; cancer cells evade the immune system by manipulating these brakes.

JOSHUA TONGOL is a young man with an interesting story. He was born with only one hand that he wrestled with for most of his life. For years he went from one healing crusade to another to receive healing but to no avail. He became utterly disappointed and confused concerning the idea of miracles.

By the age of 17 he began his eight-year tirade against the Christian charismatic movement. During that period, he considered himself “open but cautious” toward any claim of miracles.

During his college years he was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and suffered from a herniated disc (sciatica) in his back. He experienced a tremendous amount of physical and emotional pain. Although he desired to be healed, he was still a hardcore critic of faith healing. What was about to happen next changed his life forever.

In 2006, Joshua was challenged by a modern-day miracle. He was so convinced of its authenticity that he began his own journey–investigating to find out whether or not miracles still occur regularly today. He read every book he could find on the topic and met with different people who operated in these so-called “supernatural gifts.”

Eventually, Joshua began praying for the sick and started seeing results for the very first time–including his own healing from both his GERD and back injury.

In recent years, Joshua discovered the universal power to heal resides in every human being–that it doesn’t belong to just one group, religion, sect, or even to one special person. In fact, the principles of healing are woven into the very fabric of the universe and are available to anyone, anytime, and anywhere.

Shamans throughout the world, from Tibet and Mongolia to the Americas, have been involved in healing for thousands of years, dating back to Paleolithic times. An integral part of this healing tradition are its perspectives, both personal and at the same time planetary.

Shamanism, perhaps as old as consciousness itself, is an ancient healing tradition that has, throughout the ages, reflected the changing cultures of the surrounding world.

The shamanic tradition involves healing through personal transformation as well as healing our family, community and environment. Central to this healing tradition is the belief that we must heal and honor our mother the earth, who is viewed as a living, conscious organism. This sacred female Goddess, the earth, who nourishes our very existence, must also nourished with such prayers and ceremonies, say shamans.

I have studied and practiced shamanism for over 40 years, completing a lengthy apprenticeship with Don José Rios (Matsuwa), a 110 year old Huichol Indian shaman-healer. The Huichol of Mexico are said to be the last tribe of

North America to have maintained their pre-Columbian traditions, little disturbed by colonialization and Christianization until very recently. I feel fortunate for having been able to study with such an amazing group of people.

As I was taught by the Huichol, healing is a way of life; a way of being that permeates our very existence. Healing is something to be practiced constantly, not just when we are ill. Moreover, the shamanic tradition of healing does not limit itself to healing of the physical body, but rather involves the maintenance of the harmony and balance of the universe. We must consciously make contact with all life, see our life in all things, so that life and health are embedded within our hearts that so need to be nourished and cared for.

Shamanism focuses on all life as being majestically and mysteriously interrelated and sacred. Plants, rocks, two- and four-legged creatures all have personal identities with whom the shaman develop a personal relationship. When the shaman prays, he prays not only for himself but also for his sacred relatives: our mother the earth, our father the sun, our grandfather and giver of light the fire, our grandmothers the eagle and the winged ones.

Don José often told me never to forget that my relatives are the earth, sky, rivers, birds, animals, stones, gems, mountains, caves, springs and lakes. Upon our first meeting Don José spoke of our mother the earth, who nourishes and speaks to our heart. The shaman learns to listen with his heart as well as his ears, and thus shamanism, as a healing art, makes a person whole and complete, a whole system integrated fully to the surrounding environment.

According to various shamanic mythologies, there was a time when paradise existed and all life was one. For example, fire communicated freely with people. Now this is lost and for this reason the shaman acts as a bridge, drawing upon lost lines of communication with all life that surrounds him both visibly and invisibly.

Shamanism as a healing art seeks to maintain or restore balance, both for the individual and for the planet. All life is ultimately one, and the responsibility of a shaman is to bring the forces of balance, harmony and intuition into resonance with one another. One can say if we celebrate our life as one with our environment, our environment will thus give thanks to us with the proper amount of sunlight and rainfall.

Shamans themselves act as intermediaries between people and all other life forms, the gods and goddesses and all creatures who co-inhabit the earth. Shamans also have the ability to transform themselves into a spirit entity almost as if they had the key to the process of metamorphosis. Thus the role of a shaman has been vital to the community      in which he lives, as he acts as a vital link to the surrounding world.

Embedded within the tradition of shamanism and healing is the technique of achieving ecstasy. Ecstasy is sought by shamans in order to experience unity with all things. The forum used for the attainment of ecstasy is ceremonial celebration, which utilizes ancient forms of ceremony and ritual. The Huichol perform ceremonies throughout the year to maintain the delicate balance of our environment, of our universe, so that one may know their heart and feel the ecstatic joy that emanates from our very being.

The “Dance Of The Deer”, a most beautiful and intense sacred dance, of the Huichol, is employed so that the participants of the ceremonies may enter into a trance state of joy and ecstasy. The shaman and his assistants chant the ancient songs as the others dance about them. All enter together as one heart into a sacred doorway, known to the Huichol as “Nierika”, face of the divine, or link to other realms of consciousness and being.

At ceremonies,  the Huichol shaman calls upon his ally or spirit helper,  Kauyumari,          the magical deer spirit person, to assist him in the task of transporting the ceremonial participants thorough the nierika (doorway), into the realm of ecstatic joy and harmony. The dancers also assist the shaman as they too, like the deer, become messengers of the gods.

Through ceremony, participants allow themselves to be transformed, renewed and life force itself is transmitted in a sacred manner. The shaman and participants in the ceremony are provided a medium for reaching the realm on the gods and the heart source of life itself.

At the same, shamanism involves what is often seen as the more mundane and down-to-earth aspects of the shaman’s day- to-day life. Students of shamanism must endure many hardships and show much strength, both inner and outer. Pilgrimages to “places of power”, (caves, springs, oceans, mountain tops), form an important aspect of shamanic healing, as pilgrims are said to receive power, (including power to dream) and many blessings for having arrived at such places. Many Huichol shamans, as well as many shamans from other cultures, are farmers and, working daily with the earth, they develop a special relationship with the earth, which they believe to be their mother.

The wisdom of ceremonial celebration, pilgrimages to sacred spots and proper daily living to achieve balance among ourselves as human beings and our environment has been lost to many people of the modern world. For this reason Don José, an incredible 103-year-old master of shamanism adopted me as his grandson and trained me in the ancient art of shamanism and healing. “You are an educated person who knows and understands your world”, he told me. “Now you will know our world too and use the two so that modern people may once again know what we have tried never to forget. There is a balance between our two worlds, grandson: that’s the way it is.”

    Shamanic healing searches out the root of illness. Often a person’s ailment stems from something much deeper than what is felt on the surface. This is common with psychological and spiritual trauma, but also with physical ailments. The shaman strives    to find the source of the illness and to extract it from the individual.

For many, shamanic healing may seem far-fetched or simply archaic; however, I have witnessed time and again  its relevance for those very people  who don’t even believe in    it. I have had numerous people come to me after trying “everything else” and searching desperately for healing. One such man came to my office in Santa Cruz, California for a healing over 15 years ago. As soon as I met him, he asked if he needed to believe in the shamanic healing I was about to conduct.  I said  “no”  and he replied, “Good, because         I don’t.” His doctors had given him two weeks to live with his pancreatic cancer.

He ended up in remission and lived another ten years.

I am so grateful for my journey to the Huichol. I am thankful for the countless healings I witnessed while studying with Don José, which allowed me to believe. I remember one of the first things he told me. He said, “Until you learn to believe, you will never really learn.”

You can be told the earth is sacred or that shamans can dream of the future or heal terrible diseases, but until you experience it yourself, you can never fully believe. Experience is one of our greatest teachers. 🙂
