Faith is so vital to the Christian life that Scripture tells us that, without it, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Yet faith is such a powerful gift from God (Ephesians 2:8–9) Christ told His disciples that, with just a tiny measure of it, the size of a mustard seed, they could move mountains. So, what does it mean to have “mustard seed faith”?

We see the reference to “mustard seed faith” twice in Scripture.
First, in Matthew 17:14–20, we see Christ’s disciples unable to exorcise a demon from a young boy, even though Jesus had previously given them the authority to do this very thing (Matthew 10:1). When they inquired of Jesus why they were not able to drive the demon out, the Master replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it will move; Nothing will be impossible for you” (Matthew 17:14–20).

Next, in Luke 17:6, Jesus tells His disciples, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” By using the uncommonly small mustard seed as an example, Jesus is speaking figuratively about the incalculable power of God when unleashed in the lives of those with true faith.

We know that this statement about moving mountains and uprooting trees by faith is not to be taken literally. The key to understanding the passages is the nature of faith, which is a gift from God. The power of faith reflects the omni- potent nature of the God who bestows faith on His own. The mustard seed is one of the tiniest seeds found in the Middle East, so the conclusion is that the amount of faith needed to do great things is very small indeed.

Just as in the parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31–32), Jesus uses rhetorical hyperbole to make the point that little is much when it comes from God. The mustard seed in the parable grows to be a huge tree, representing the tiny beginnings of Christianity when just a few disciples began to preach and teach the gospel. Eventually, the kingdom grew to huge proportions, encompassing the entire world and spreading over centuries.

How Many Solar Panels to Power a Home in 2021

How to Solar Power Your Home / House #1 – On Grid vs Off Grid.
BY GREENTUMBLE

If your community is like many others today, you’re seeing more and more solar panels installed on your neighbors’ rooftops. Solar photovoltaic system installations are booming.
If you’re starting to think about saving money on your electricity bill with clean solar energy, you’re probably wondering, “How many solar panels do I actually need for my house?”.

How much money can a solar roof save you ?
Profit from your roof space: find local deals on solar in your area, eliminate your power bill.
The first step in finding out the size of a solar system that will generate
enough power to meet your energy consumption is to calculate the amount
of electricity you use as this can vary a lot from household to household.

As an example, let’s assume two families live next door to each other in
1,000 sq. ft. homes.
A single guy lives in Home A and he often spends evenings out in the city
with friends or looking for his soul mate. Being alone, and most of the day out, he doesn’t use much electricity and pays about $50 a month.

In Home B, two parents live with a teenage kid. They are using the heater or
air conditioner often during the day and use electricity to filter their swimming pool, meanwhile the teenager is always on his iPad or watching TV. Since more people are living in the house and their way of life requires more energy, they pay $200 a month on electricity.

So even though the houses have the same size, the family in Home B would need to consider installing more solar panels to make up for their electricity usage than the single guy in Home A.

In your case you can think of it like this: The more energy your home uses,
the more energy has to be produced by your solar PV system.
Therefore, the more solar panels you are going to need.

How much solar power will you need?
To find out your average energy usage, check your past utility bills.
More precisely the last 12 months of your bills (so you include summer and winter months as energy consumption varies throughout the year). Look for the total number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) you consumed every month.

image.png
Sum the numbers up and divide them by 12 to get the average.

Calculate Energy Consumption
An easier way to determine your total energy consumption for the past year
is to simply call your utility company and ask them to provide you the details.
Based on the data available from the U.S Energy Information Administration, in 2013 the average family home in the United States consumed about 900 KWh of electricity per month. That’s 30 kWh per day.

Obviously your household can consume more or less electricity depending
on how big your house is, how many family members live in it, the appliances you have and how energy efficient you are.

How many kWh can solar panels produce and
how many panels do you need on your roof?

The amount of power (kWh) your solar energy system can produce depends
on the number of solar panels that can absorb solar energy and convert it into electricity.
Assuming you are going to choose standard-efficiency solar panels,
here are the most common sizes for residential solar systems and their kWh production potential to give you an idea of how many panels you would need
to run a house.

A 3kW solar system which consists of 12 panels can produce an average
of 4,200 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 194 sq. ft.
for a 3kW system.
A 5kW solar system which consists of 20 panels can produce an average
of 7,000 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 340 sq. ft.
for a 5kW system.
A 10kW solar system which consists of 40 panels can produce an average
of 14,000 kWh per year. You will need a roof space of about 680 sq. ft.
for a 10kW system.
Keep in mind that the amount of power your solar system can produce
depends on how much sunlight your roof receives and your location.

For example, California has more sunny days annually than Washington.
In this case if you live in Washington you would need a bigger solar system
to get the same power as you would get with a smaller system in California.

The Renewable Resource Data Center provides average daily total solar resource information on grid cells by state and it’s free…so check it out.

Few things about solar panel output efficiency
Solar panel type and quality make a significant difference in terms of solar output and efficiency. Not all solar panels are the same.

For instance, monocrystalline photovoltaic (PV) solar panels are known to be the most efficient solar panels on the market, but also the most expensive.
Their two main advantages over the other types of solar panels such as polycrystalline or thin film panels is that 1) they absorb more sunlight than conventional cells and their output efficiency is not affected that much by temperature and 2) they occupy less space.
These are an ideal option if you do not have enough roof space for standard (polycrystalline) panels.
On the other hand, polycrystalline panels are cheaper, they are less efficient and therefore occupy more space, but offer a better return on investment than monocrystalline panels.

Because of these wide differences in quality and efficiency, it’s up to you to decide which solar panels are right for your home.
The main takeaway is that, the more efficient the panels are, the more power they can produce, and the fewer photovoltaic panels you will need on your roof to get the same energy output as you would get with polycrystalline or thin film solar panels.

Overall, if money is not an issue, monocrystalline panels are the best option.

How much energy do you want to offset with solar?
Typically most people want to offset as close as possible to 100 percent
of their consumption. However, not everyone can afford to offset all energy consumption with a stand-alone solar system as the overall cost of the full home solar power system and its installation can get quite expensive.

Small solar systems on house rooftops!
Installing a smaller system and participating in the net metering program
is still a great way to reduce your electricity bill up to 50 percent or more.

How does net metering work?
Let us assume that you are gone on a vacation with your family.
The solar system still generates energy when you’re gone but since you are not using it, it’s being automatically sent back to the grid and you get credits for it. As a result, your electricity bill will decrease according to how many credits you have.

Knowing the answers to the above questions will give you an understanding of the number of panels needed to achieve your daily energy production goals and will allow you to calculate in a realistic range solar panels needed for your home.

Bottom line: I heard the average conversion cost for a house
is between $65,000 and $80,000.00.

The efficiency of fossil fuels lies between 40 to 50% (around 42% for coal, 45% for oil & 52% for natural gas). Alternatively, the efficiency of solar panels range from 11 to 15% which is quite low. So, we can say that fossil fuels are highly efficient compared to solar energy.

How efficient is solar power to fossil fuels.

When reading up on solar panels, you’ll probably bump into the term “efficiency.” Although it sounds like a good thing, most people don’t exactly know what this term is. How efficient are solar panels? How do you even measure this?
In this article, we’ll analyze the factors that influence the performance of
solar panels in detail – solar panel efficiency. Moreover, we’ll also go over the environmental factors that detract from it. With silicon-based panels being the most common type today, we’ll specifically cover the efficiency of this material.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE EFFICIENCY OF SOLAR PANELS?
In simple terms, this is a measurement that determines the amount of sun’s energy a particular panel is capable of converting into electricity. A solar panel converts the sun’s energy into electricity by capturing the current that’s generated when sunshine interacts with the panel’s thin film or silicon cells.
Typically, the cells are arranged into glass rectangles and are packed tightly. This is so that they can attract sunlight. Once the energy is converted, it is sent to the user’s circuit box. From there, it is distributed to the rest of the house.
How is this measured? If a particular panel has 15% efficiency, it can convert 15% of the sunshine that’s interacting with it into electricity. The models with the highest efficiency are capable of reaching 23% efficiency.
However, the average efficiency stands in the range of 15%-18%.

WHICH FACTORS AFFECT SOLAR PANEL EFFICIENCY?
The performance of these products is affected by a whole host of variables. Here are the most vital ones:

THE TYPE:
As they’re based on the silicon of highest purity, monocrystalline panels sport the highest efficiency. The polycrystalline models don’t perform so well, but they still do the job. Finally, the thin-film models are somewhat inefficient,
but they come at a low price. They do, however, take a lot of space, which makes them inadequate for most households.

MAINTENANCE:
In most cases, a solar system won’t require much maintenance.
This is especially true in case it’s grid-tied. Nevertheless, one should clean his system regularly. This is because dirt, dust, and other debris can easily affect the panel’s performance. Using soapy water is usually more than enough.
The rainfall can also do the job.
Those who are afraid of heights can use the cleaning services.
Unfortunately, there’s no single answer to the question of how often should one clean his panels. To get the idea of how frequently you should wipe off the dust and dirt, you can simply monitor the power output.

TEMPERATURE:
Unless you live in an excessively hot area (such as Phoenix or San Antonio),
the temperature is not something you should worry about. Typically, the efficiency of a particular solar panel will decrease as the temperature increases. To combat this, most professional installers position the panels in a way for them to receive an adequate amount of airflow.
This keeps the efficiency rates up by providing natural cooling.

ORIENTATION:
Another important factor is the orientation. To achieve the best performance, one needs to position his system in a way that maximizes the sunlight input.
In the case of the U.S., this means that the panels need to be faced southward. To make solar panel orientation easier, one can use trackers. These devices make the panel follow the sun’s trajectory. However, solar trackers are too expensive for most homeowners, and they don’t pass a cost-benefit analysis. The more straightforward solution would be to use racks to alter the pitch of the roof. In most cases, this is more than enough to allow your system to spend more time in sunlight.

SHADE:
This one is a no-brainer. Depending on one’s setup, shade can even
bring down the whole system. To prevent this from happening, one needs to consult professional solar panel installers. These experts conduct a thorough analysis of shading in one’s specific situation.

LIFETIME:
Like most other products, the performance of solar panels goes down with time. In most cases, this means a decrease in the power output of 0.5% with each passing year. Most companies back their models with warranties that guarantee that the performance won’t go below 25% after 25 years of use.
Read here to learn how long solar panels last.

IS IT TRUE THAT BAD WEATHER CAN DECREASE SOLAR PANEL EFFICIENCY?

One of the most common misconceptions surrounding the solar panel  efficiency is that bad weather can lead to reduced performance.
However, the opposite is often true. Although designed to withstand average temperatures, these devices actually perform better when they’re cooler.
They need light, not heat – some of the most productive days are usually
bright winter days. Another thing people are often confused about is snow.
There’s nothing to worry about – a thin layer of snow doesn’t affect the performance as much as you think it does.

This Is Why We Don’t Have Solar-Powered Cars
Elizabeth Blackstock.

Using the sun’s energy to power green vehicles seems like a no-brainer.
There’s a lot of sunlight in this world—why not harness it in order to
reduce our dependence on both fossil fuels and the electrical grid?
Well, the main problem is, it’s not as easy as you think.

There are a few solar concepts out there.
We have the Batmobile-esque Aptera, which has been evolving for over half
a century and will be released this year, the company says—though the solar power can only get you about 40 miles on a clear day. There’s the Lightyear One, a luxury sedan that integrates solar panels onto its hood and is said to
get up to 500 miles on a charge.
There was the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept, designed in a partnership
between Ford and Georgia Tech. Instead of needing to be plugged into an electrical grid to charge, its battery would have been fed by solar power.
There’s also a Formula SAE program that’s designed around building a
solar-powered car.

But if you’ve ever been wondering why solar-powered EVs just haven’t
caught on, Jason Fenske over at Engineering Explained is here with a whiteboard full of math to tell you exactly what you need to know about
what makes this prospect so challenging.

I’m not the kind of person who’s going to be able to explain math to you in a way that makes sense—you’ll have to watch Fenske’s videos for those details. What I can do, however, is paint a few broad strokes to give you the overview you need.

Basically, to harness the 173 trillion kilowatts of power that hit the Earth at any given second is no easy task. The small size of a car can only harness about 12 kilowatts of that power, but that translates to about 62 mph when you convert that power into speed—and you could travel 62 mph indefinitely, as long as the sun is out. In those same ideal circumstances, you could also charge a 75 kW battery in just over six hours. Not bad, right?

That’s because those numbers are in a perfect world, which is not the world we live in. Sunlight is reflected back into the atmosphere. It’s dulled by clouds and tall buildings. And the Earth is curved, so some parts of the planet are going to get more sun than others. And Fenske’s example car was entirely covered in solar panels; in his next calculations, he factored in windows and glass.

Now, instead of 12 kilowatts of power, only 0.375 kW are hitting the solar panels. That translates to a constant speed of 19 mph under pretty ideal conditions. It also means it would take over eight days to charge your battery. And that’s only if you’re not using it.
That’s not ideal. It’s not even really worthwhile to slap a solar panel on there to try to absorb some extra power, since that power would be incredibly minimal. It would be the equivalent of putting a batch of cookies out in the weak sunshine on the off chance they might get cooked a little bit.

Once again, it all comes down to efficiency. In the future, solar panels may
be more efficient, but right now, we’d be depending on a pretty finicky natural resource whose ideal performance could only be achieved at a certain location at a certain time of day during a certain time of year and under certain weather conditions. That’s not exactly something you want to rely on for your daily commute. Why Don’t Solar Powered Cars Exist?

Hey, Don’t Insult the Monkey

Joe, Electric Cars Will Never Power America! By  Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris | Jun 1, 2021 | Climate Change, Politics

There’s no problem so bad that the government can’t complicate it further. ~ Ronald Reagan

Here is why the electric automobile will remain a niche market for the foreseeable future, likely never exceeding 10% of the cars on the road.  One of the most unjustifiably hyped innovations of our lifetime is the electric vehicle (EV). The federal government and the state of California are wrong to think that the internal combustion engine is destined to end up in the dustbin of history in the next few decades. It will not happen for many obvious reasons that governments are blind to, and some reasons that are not so obvious.

Jan 09, 2020 · So far, states predict they will be able to sufficiently boost power production. But whether electric vehicles will become an asset
or a liability to the grid largely depends on when drivers charge their cars. Electricity demand fluctuates throughout the day; demand is higher during daytime hours, peaking in the early evening.

North American power transmission grid – Wikipedia

The electrical power grid that powers Northern America is not a single grid,
but is instead divided into multiple wide area synchronous grids.[1] The Eastern Interconnection and the Western Interconnection are the largest. Three other regions include the Texas Interconnection, the Quebec Interconnection, and the Alaska Interconnection.
Each region delivers power at a nominal 60 Hz frequency.
The regions are not usually directly connected or synchronized to each other, but there are some HVDC Interconnectors.
In the United States[2] and Canada,[3] national standards specify that the nominal voltage supplied to the consumer should be 120 V and allow a range of 114 V to 126 V (RMS) (−5% to +5%). Historically 110 V, 115 V and 117 V have been used at different times and places in North America. Mains power is sometimes spoken of as 110 V; however, 120 V is the nominal voltage. The most obvious one is that EVs are so expensive that the average American cannot afford to own one.
Vehicles powered by internal combustion engines will always be significantly cheaper and will transport you much farther. Regardless, EVs can never be produced in the numbers the government wants because of a lack of necessary rare earth elements needed for EV battery production, minerals that are mostly held hostage in China. Fortunately, the situation has improved slightly in recent years, as the below figure shows, but China still has the largest known deposits of rare earths.

In addition, as The Wall Street Journal reported on May 21:
“China is tightening its grip on the global supply of processed manganese, rattling a range of companies worldwide that depend on the versatile metal—including the planet’s biggest electric-vehicle makers. China produces over
90 percent of the world’s manganese products.”
Availability of charging stations will also never be adequate. And the time required to recharge on a long trip will so frustrate most drivers that they will undoubtedly return home and, if they still have one, begin the trip anew with an internal combustion engine-driven car.
The cost of a battery replacement will certainly be a turn-off for many would-be EV owners, as well.
Here are the even less obvious deterrents. If you remain an EV fan after reading about these problems, please write to us and explain why.
We commit to writing another article explaining your point of view.

TESLA
Let’s first get Elon Musk and Tesla out of the way. While he did make many cars in the $40k to $50k range in the past year, Tesla is now and will remain a car for the affluent, with his primary models checking in around $100k. Nevertheless, Musk will always be successful because he really is the smartest person in the room. He is now unbelievably wealthy with a net worth of $156 billion because so many people recognize his brilliance and so buy Tesla stock at nonsensically high values.

BIDEN AND NEWSOME
To support the president’s goal of a nation powered by EVs, on April 22,
the Biden administration announced that $15 billion will be devoted to building a national network of 500,000 charging stations [by 2030], to “increase confidence for drivers that they will always have a charging option when they need it.” Also, embedded in Biden’s proposed $1.7 trillion infrastructure plan is a whopping $174 billion to boost the domestic EV market with tax credits and grants for battery manufacturers, and other incentives.
Things are equally crazy in California, where, on September 23, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order requiring sales of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035.
For the reasons below, running American on EVs cannot happen.
But fear not, Biden and Newsom will be long gone and replaced by more reasonable folks long before the years of their directives come to pass.

AVAILABLE ELECTRICITY
The Laurence Livermore Laboratory of the US Department of Energy states that America’s current electrical generation capacity is 11.4 trillion kilowatt-hours per year. The energy used for transportation today is equivalent to 8.5 trillion kilowatt-hours per year, of which only an infinitesimal part is already electric. Where would the additional power come from? Were all cars to be electric? The same governments in charge plan for no more energy from oil, natural gas, coal, or nuclear. The obvious answer, liberals tell us, is wind and solar power, which currently produce a mere 0.7 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Where and how will we build enough solar and wind installations to keep us all driving EVs?
We have neither the economic resources nor land area to even consider this.

RANGE
Just as golf carts may be fun and legal to run around your neighborhood if you are inclined, so are electric cars. However, few normal people would want to plan a long trip in one, but let’s try. We will go first class in a Tesla on a trip of 270 miles which only a Tesla can now do on a single charge. It will take us 4.5 hours to drive 270 miles and about 6.5 hours to recharge the battery unless you can find the rare supercharging station. If you cannot, you have brought your average trip speed, including charging time, down to under 25 mph.
Unless you have planned adequately, you will always be driving with what is called range anxiety. But still, they are great in the neighborhood, but they definitely cost more than a golf cart.

MILES PER GALLON
The term mph is disappearing as an advantage when buying an EV.
The reason is that in order to increase the range of EVs, a great deal of extra weight in batteries has had to be added. That has largely canceled the claim to yield less carbon dioxide (CO2) than internal combustion engines. Yet, less CO2 emissions remain the primary selling point for EVs, even though the production of these batteries generates huge amounts of CO2. In fact, because of the greater manufacturing demands of EVs over normal gas-power cars, by the time an EV arrives at the showroom, it has already double the ‘carbon footprint’ of traditional vehicles (although climate campaigners will eventually be concerned about this, we are not—after all, CO2 is wonderful as it is greening our world).
On top of that, everyone seems to assume the energy that flows from the wall or recharging station is free. In fact, back at the power station, someone is burning a lot of coal or natural gas to create it. Perhaps your electric car should more accurately be called a coal or natural gas car. And, oh yes, the tax on your gasoline to keep our roads maintained will soon have to be replaced by a special tax on your electric vehicle registration, and well, it should be.
The United States Power Grid

COLD CLIMATES
The nature of batteries is that they yield less energy in cold climates.
EV owners will all learn this soon enough. Advertised ranges on a fully charged battery will not be achieved. The shortfall will be significant and good luck trying to charge your EV battery overnight if the temperature in your garage gets too low.

THE CALIFORNIA JOKE
California plans to have 25 million EVs in the not-too-distant future.
It already has 50% of the nation’s EVs. Thus far, the utility companies have had little to say about the alarming cost projections or the certain increased power rates that will be required to charge their customers. It is not just the total amount of electricity required, but also the transmission lines and fast charging capacity that must be built at existing filling stations. Neither wind nor solar can support any of it.
To match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy
12 hours, the station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes. And, it can take 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge a vehicle between empty or just topping off. Will charging station hotels have to be built along our highways for drivers awaiting a full recharge?
By the way, the 49 states not named California have the other 50% of EVs, an average of about one percent each. It would appear that those states understand the problems California faces.

USED CAR MARKET
The average used EV will need a new battery, pricing them well above used internal combustion cars. The average age of an American car on the road is
12 years. A 12-year-old EV will be on its third battery. A Tesla battery costs $10,000, so there will not be many 12-year-old EVs on the market.

EVs PER BLOCK IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
A home charging system for a Tesla requires a 75-amp service.
The average house is equipped with 100-amp service. On most suburban streets, the electrical infrastructure would be unable to carry more than three houses, each with a single Tesla. For half the homes on your block to have electric vehicles, the system would be wildly overloaded, or massive electrical infrastructure rebuilds would be required.

BATTERIES
Although the modern lithium-ion battery is four times better than the old lead-acid battery, gasoline still holds 80 times the energy density. The great lithium battery in your cell phone weighs less than an ounce, while the Tesla battery weighs 1,000 pounds.

EMERGENCY VEHICLES MUST CONTINUE TO BE POWERED BY INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

The electric automobile will remain a niche market for the foreseeable future, likely never exceeding 10% of the cars on the road. Automobile manufacturers that are heavily investing in EVs will be very disappointed in their sales. Perhaps they know this and instead will soon make only what they know they can sell. And then President Biden and Governor Newsom’s plans will crumble with the inevitable return of the gasoline-powered vehicle.

In the meantime, consumers who made the leap to EVs will increasingly
find themselves freezing in the dark on the side of remote highways with their EV batteries depleted. If they are lucky, they will be rescued by a tow truck operator who had the common sense to stockpile gasoline and keep their internal combustion engine-driven trucks tuned up and ready to go.

Toyota has no love for pure-electric cars, hence it falling out with Tesla
Motors and the subsequent war of words between the two. Once again, Toyota is declaring that electricity isn’t the fuel of the future, reiterating its belief that hydrogen is the way to go.

This time around, the chief engineer for the Toyota Mirai 2021 fuel cell car,
Yoshikazu Tanaka, made some controversial assertions about why battery-electric cars won’t work in large quantities. Reuters Canada reports that Tanaka said that too many cars charging up will overload the power grid,
which in turn will cause problems for households and businesses.

What about rapid battery charging technology?
Tanaka said it wouldn’t help, because even if you could charge up an electric car in a mere twelve minutes, it would probably be “using up electricity required to power 1,000 houses.”
Tanaka and his employer aren’t anti electric cars, but instead see hydrogen as a more practical fuel source. The only way they’d word is if virtually all electric vehicles were charged at night and weren’t driven very far each day. In reality, some people must drive long distances every day, and not everyone has the ability to charge their car nightly.
Interestingly enough, no mention was made by Tanaka about what role solar panels would play in helping keep up with daytime energy demands.
As Toyota is pushing hydrogen vehicles such as the Mirai, it’s meeting considerable resistance from electric car fans. The company has been accused of “knowing” that electric cars are better, but being part of a worldwide conspiracy, among other outlandish things.
Toyota is an incredibly powerful force in the automotive industry, having single handedly jump started the hybrid powertrain revolution. Now that it’s putting its full weight behind hydrogen fuel cell technology, the question is when not if such vehicles will become common on U.S. roads. Just how mainstream they’ll eventually be is still up in the air.
An important milestone was achieved by Toyota recently as the Mirai was the first fuel cell car to pace a NASCAR race.

Prius Battery Life: Everything You Need to Know
A Toyota Prius’ battery life is not definitive, as it will depend on how far you drive and the conditions that you drive it in. However, the battery does have a warranty, which is good for either 10 years or 150,000 miles in states that have California emissions laws. In all other states, the warranty on your Prius battery is good for 8 years or 100,000 miles. This means that if you need your battery replaced within the warranty period, you can get a new one with no out-of-pocket cost.

Things to Know about the Prius Battery
Driving a Prius will save you a lot of money at the fuel pump, but what
happens when you have to switch out the battery? The warranty is good for at least 8 years, but many people drive their cars much longer than that; especially Toyotas, as they are known for having long lives. So if you own a Prius, it’s likely that, at some point, you will need to replace the battery. This can be very expensive at about $4033 for the new hybrid battery pack. Of course, this is from the Toyota dealership, but a Prius owner from Forbes explains that there is a less expensive option. Buying a reconditioned battery could potentially save you thousands of dollars, and, if you have it installed by a reputable company, there will still be a warranty period. Some people may not feel comfortable installing a reconditioned battery pack, but for the savings you’ll receive, it may be worth looking into.

Benefits of Driving a Prius
Aside from the obvious fuel efficiency, there are many benefits to driving a Toyota Prius. Here are some of the top reasons for owning one:
Spacious interior
Standard safety features
Easy entry and exit
Easy-to-use controls
Good visibility
Up-to-date technology
Plenty of cargo capacity
Responsive steering and handling

In addition, the people at Motorcells say that you’ll likely be able to get at least 200,000 miles of life out of your Prius if you take care of it and stay on top of routine maintenance.
The Prius may look compact from the outside, but anyone riding in the front seats will find plenty of headroom and legroom. And with all its standard and available safety features, you and your passengers will feel safe and secure out on the road. It comes with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes features such as a pre-collision warning and lane departure alert. Getting in and out of this car is a breeze with doors that open wide. There is plenty of clearance so you won’t hit your head on the doorframe when entering and exiting the vehicle.
With all the controls easily accessible from the driver’s seat and clearly labeled, any driver will find this car easy to drive. It even has some of the controls mounted right on the steering wheel to help you keep your eyes on the road. The large front windshield helps to make seeing the road a simple task and the front roof pillars won’t obstruct your view. You’ll find that there’s plenty of cargo room thanks to the 60/40 rear split seats. They can quickly be folded down if you have large items you need to transport.
There are plenty of high-tech options available to go along with this hybrid car. You’ll find an infotainment system with a touch-screen display that has an optional navigation system to help you find your way.

Other technology features include:
USB ports
Bluetooth
Voice-commands
Stereo system

Enjoy the ride in your Prius, thanks to its responsive steering and exceptional handling. The steering responds to your commands naturally, and won’t jerk you around. Feel the quick, secure handling that lets you take on the highway or winding road with confidence.
How Does a Prius Compare to Other Hybrids?
Although the Prius was one of the first widely marketed and popular hybrids, there are many available today in a variety of makes and models. So how does the Prius compare?
First of all, you have to understand that there are two types of hybrid vehicles:

Full hybrids
Plug-in hybrids

The main difference between the two is the way the battery is charged. A full hybrid is charged from a large battery pack that draws power from the gas engine and the brakes. The plug-in versions can be just that, plugged in. They can be charged by plugging them into an outlet for a period of time is what Consumer Reports tells us.
Hybrid vehicles will vary based on the automaker and the features each one provides. Body styles and interior design will also be different depending on the make and trim level you choose. However, the real difference between hybrid vehicles is the battery. You’d be surprised at the differences in this regard. We’ll look at the batteries for the following vehicles to see how they
all compare:

   Chevy Bolt EV
Toyota Prius
Lexus RX 400h
Ford Escape
Honda Insight
Nissan LEAF®
Saturn Vue Green Line

A Prius’ battery consists of 28 Panasonic nickel-metal hydride modules.
Each of these contains six 1.2-volt cells says Green Car Reports. They are connected in a series and will produce a total of 201.6 volts. The Lexus RX 400h has a nickel-metal hydride battery that’s packaged in a newly developed metal casing. It has 240 cells that, in conjunction with the boost converter, can deliver up to 500 volts.
On the Ford Escape, you’ll find a battery pack made by Sanyo that contains
250 individual nickel hydride cells explains hybrid CARS. Each cell is in its own stainless steel case.
These are all welded and wrapped together in groups of five, and they produce 1.3 volts.
With the Honda Insight, you get 120 Panasonic nickel hydride D cells that put out 1.2 volts. This allows it a 100 amp discharge and a 50 amp charge rate.

The Saturn Vue Green Line’s battery is made in the United States by Cobasys.
Its nickel-metal hydride battery provides 36 volts and can deliver and receive 14.5 kW of power. Not all hybrids are created equally, and you’ll want to make sure you understand the differences before making your choice. Toyotas are known for being safe, reliable vehicles that can be in the family for generations. Maybe a Prius is in your family’s future.

Innate Healing

Cancer is like a Dark Knight of Your Soul:

It’s there to humble you and teach you a thing or two about yourself.
Life should not be met to be lived by the status quo “old money” versus “new money” and who has the most.  Before my cancer:  I had an extremely stress filled job in my life as an insurance claims adjuster with clients always wanting you there yesterday.   Heck my work schedule was always three weeks out … adjusters are scarce people nobody wants those jobs.
So it was always go – go,  push and shove  and  not thinking about your health.  Therefore, having cancer has a steep learning curve and a tough lesson about seeing the good and bad in all of us. Why is jealousy such a powerful emotion that it can cause people to say hurtful things?
Within that learning curve:  I even look at the Alabama Gulf Coastline differently today. With four main rivers flowing into the Gulf ( The Great Mississippi, Rio Grande, Grijalva and Usumacinta.) Each spring the farmers spread fertilizer on their land and rain washes these fertilizers off the land…. into the streams  and rivers flowing into the Gulf reducing oxygen (hypoxia) creating dead zones.
It’s when these dead zones are being created in disputed depths of between 3750 to 4384    feet of water.  While water testing in the Gulf of Mexico  is showing increased levels of arsenic out of the Gulf.  So why eat any seafood from it. . . for Christ Sakes people, why  are we messing with mother nature
and an ecosystem that is so vital for life and living.
However the greatest thing cancer has taught is that no matter what …
Live the Life You  Love and Love the Life You Live.  While living where you love to live it and love doing the things you love doing. Also never take life for granted its way too short. Hurricane Frederic in 1979 was the last hurricane to strike Alabama Coastline and prior to that the last Cat 3 wind storm was in 1916. Hurricanes usually go either to the east or west of Alabama.
That said though, ‘never take your life for granted or what it has given you. . . it can  change instantly. It could have been the stress of last season’s hurricanes that caused    my recurrence but I don’t know for sure.
ALL I KNOW IS That I became very ill and there’s nothing to blame.
Different strokes for different folks if you Love Living along the coast.
I promise you…    you will live where your heart is. Some people love paddle boarding out into the gulf to paddle where the dolphin swims. For me I find the excitement that enters into my body comes from walking nature paths  and  listening to The Old Oak Tree Andrew Jackson stood upon to talk to his troops.     Read More:  Sweet Home Alabama | Cancer Quick Facts (solitarius.org)

The Smith Cancer Saga — Can Cancer Be Cured Naturally?
By Huda Munir Last updated Mar 11, 2017

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity;
and I’m not sure about the universe.” ― Albert Einstein!!

The only thing we are sure about in cancer treatment is that it has
a direct link with good nutrition. Proper nutrition, which includes essential nutrients  such as vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats, ensures that the body has the vital ingredients to rebuild and repair its tissues and cells during the vigorous treatment regimes. Eating healthy before, during and after treatment is essential to help the patient heal.
However, not everything is clear about nutrition therapy and cancer.
Like, for example, we don’t know the extent to which nutrition can help,
or that can cancer be completely cured only through nutrition therapy?
Can we bypass chemotherapy and radiation by adopting proper nutrition?
Is it possible to stop cancer metastasis by consuming the right diet?
For the last 50 years, chemotherapy has been the only choice of treatment for different neoplasms i.e. abnormal growth of tissues. However, some carcinomas can be cured through medication only as well. Chemotherapy and radiation kill cancerous as well as normal cells. Apart from nutrition, the role of botanical extracts and herbal medicines is also unclear.
It should be noted that one of the most powerful anti-cancer drugs is ‘Taxol’ which contains plant extract of ‘Taxus brevifolia’.
The fact of the matter is that cancer patients are given a Hobson’s choice
for their treatment. Hospitals, doctors and pharmaceutical industries, intentionally or unintentionally, propagate the idea that conventional treatments are the only cure for cancer. Otherwise the only option left is death.
Cancer patients don’t have much of an option, even though there are many stories of cancer survivors who have shunned conventional treatment and who claim to have cured their cancer using an aggressive nutrition regime or botanical extracts. One such story has been narrated by Carol Smith about her husband’s battle with bladder cancer.

THE Trevor Smith Cancer SAGA
According to Carol Smith in 2012 her husband Trevor Smith 52 years old at the time, was diagnosed with stage T2A bladder cancer. After double consultations in the UK and the US, Trevor was recommended chemo, radiation and radical surgery which would remove Trevor’s bladder, prostate and intestines. An artificial bladder would also be constructed for Trevor to pass urine.

There was a twist in the tale.
The doctors forgot to tell the couple that if Trevor undergoes the operation,
he would only be able to live for 24 to 30 months and that too as an invalid.
The couple decided to think this through and seek alternative treatments.
In Carol Smith’s own words, “The oncologist and the surgeon were nearly forcing us to get the procedure done. The surgeon even booked a date for us.
We just felt that we needed to slow down a bit and consider all the options.”
During these tumultuous times, Carol stumbled upon a natural cancer cure called ‘Essiac’ h. Essiac is an alleged herbal cure for cancer made up of
four different herbs: Burdock Root, Slippery Elm Inner Bark, Sheep Sorrel
& Indian Rhubarb Root. All the herbs have roots in native Canadian Ojibwa Indian culture  and the treatment was discovered by Rene Caissie.

Trevor was administered the treatment within a week of his diagnosis and a naturopathic was also consulted. Following the blood tests, it was found out that he was deficient in Vitamin D. A new plan of action was put together and his diet was revised. It should be noted the couple did not forgo conventional medical aid such as the use of MRI scans, biochemical tests and even laser surgeries to remove Trevor’s tumors, but instead used them in combination with their alternative plan of natural healing..
“The conventional doctors gave my husband 18 months to 2 years to live,” Carol said, adding “It has been 19 months since my husband was diagnosed and my husband is cancer-free and he has his bladder intact.”
Candidly, Carol Smith also acknowledged the use of an illegal substance,  Cannabis Oil, for her husband’s treatment for 90 days and said that it had played a major role as well. Contrary information on the association between marijuana and cancer exists in the scientific community.
Some literary reviews cite it as a probable cause of cancer, while others argue the use of weed through smoking may be a contributing factor.

While some clinical trials have shown positive effects of using poppy plant extracts to kill cancerous cells. The Cannabidiol (CBD) present in cannabis was recently found to be effective in killing cancerous cells in breast cancer through the process of apoptosis i.e. programmed cell death and is being proposed for further investigation as a potential antineoplastic agent.
In the same way, Trevor Smith’s diet was completely changed and he was no longer allowed to consume dairy, sugar, white flour, white potatoes or any kind of processed foods such as pastries, meats, cheeses etc. Trevor only ate a plant-based diet with small portions of fish and chicken, He was also given large doses of vitamins such as C, D3, B17 and K2. Likewise, in the initial stages, detox powders were added to the diet but later on he was given DHEA to boost the immune system.
Carol Smith has also written a book on her husband’s cancer journey called ‘Taking Control’ under the pseudonym of ‘Alyssia Sade’. “It is shocking that we are led to believe that there is no cure for Cancer, our story is a living proof there is another way and I am now consumed with only getting the word out that cancer does not need to mean death,” said Carol Smith.
Most oncologists would say that nutrition-based treatment is not being adopted due to lack of substantial scientific evidence. However, if there is a window of opportunity, why not explore it?  Search Results for Cannabis Oil | Cancer Quick Facts (solitarius.org)

Biography of Dr. Carl O. Helvie

Dr. Carl O. Helvie born in Gouverneur,  New York, on August 13,1932. and departed this life on December 3, 2019 in Hampton, Virginia was a world-renowned nursing educator and nursing theorist. His specialties are public health and holistic medicine. Some of his special concerns are holistic treatment of cancer, the homeless, predicting future behavior of clients through the life cycle, and nursing care in other countries besides the United States. He is best known for his nursing theory entitled Helvie Energy of Nursing and Health
He is also known for his account on how, using holistic health measures, he survived a fatal diagnosis of lung cancer in 1961.He was always headed for a career in nursing, which was quite unusual for the time. Upon graduating from high school in 1954, he went to work for a hospital in Rochester, New York, where he was awarded his R.N in 1958. From there, he became head nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Attending school at night, Dr. Helvie obtained his BSN in 1958 at New York University.

From there, Dr. Helvie moved to San Francisco, where he used his Public Health certification to work for the Veterans Administration, San Francisco Health Department and the Oakland Health Department.
He had the honor of being San Francisco’s first male public health nurse. This was quite a step forward for male nurses at this time; and it was necessary for him to move to California to obtain a position. In 1961, he was offered a scholarship at the University of California to participate in a master’s program in Public Health. He also adopted a holistic lifestyle to cure his diagnosed lung cancer, while continuing school and work.

The nursing theorist secured a lecture position at the University of California upon his graduation, becoming the first male public health instructor in the state.
However, to progress in the teaching field at the University of California,
a PhD was needed. So, in 1965 he entered the master’s and PhD program in public health at John Hopkins University. Dr. Helvie has commented that his past education was science and disease based, whereas the education at John Hopkins was community and holistic based.
He chose to make community nursing care issues his life’s work after graduation. After completing his second masters and his PhD, Dr. Helvie
began to teach public health nursing at Duke University in 1969. He taught there while working to expand his knowledge of holistic medicine, and he
took classes to learn spiritual approaches to patient care in John Hopkins’ Department of Divinity.

In 1971, Dr. Helvie accepted a position in the Nursing Department at Old Dominion University in Virginia, where he stayed for the next 30 years until his retirement in 2001. Over the years at Old Dominion, Dr. Helvie conducted research and publication of his major nursing theory in public health, and he continued to do research into nursing care delivery. He also developed an interest in nursing education, leading him to accept the Nursing Department’s Chair. In particular, he postulated his Helvie Energy Theory of Nursing and Health. This was first published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health in 1989 over two separate articles. The first article dealt with the nursing care of the individual; the second article dealt with the family of the client in the community. This theory formed the basis for his book Advanced Practice Nursing in the Community which he had published in 1998.
After retirement from teaching, Dr. Helvie went on to teach at the University of Applied Science in Frankfort, Germany and acted as a consultant to Russia to improve their nursing education and practice. This last resulted in Dr. Helvie’s article on the differences of the response to the homeless population in Europe, Russia and the United States. Dr. Helvie continues to lecture, do research, work in the fields of public health and holistic medicine.

Dr. Simone Gold on Twitter: “America’s Frontline Doctors is not backing down. We have filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking a restraining order against use of the COVID-19 vaccine in children. A Must See Simone Gold Interview With Michelle Malkin On Stop Medical Discrimination!

Dr. Simone Gold related the nature of her arrest, how the distribution of experimental vaccines violates the Nuremberg Code, and why COVID-19 censorship is a ‘crime against humanity.’

LOS ANGELES, California,
Tue Feb 23, 2021 – 9:43 am EST  (LifeSiteNews)
In a recent interview with Michelle Malkin, Dr. Simone Gold, founder of American Frontline Doctors (AFLD) discussed the lack of authentic informed consent with regards to experimental vaccines, censorship as a “crime against humanity,” and how she was subjected to a massive swat team raid upon her home by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in order to arrest her for being present in the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6th.
In describing this incident, Gold said, “I was paid a visit by the FBI in a Roger Stone kind of take down moment, which is quite uncalled for. You know, if anybody wanted to get a hold of me, they could have picked up the phone and called. I’m very easy to find. But there were literally twenty guys with guns blazing, [and they] broke down my door,” Gold said.
“It was dramatic and what I want to say is that I weep for our country. If you can pull in a person like me … [and] have the FBI break down your door with 20 guns, shackle you [in] handcuffs [and] drag you off, I mean it was really terrible … I’m telling you America, this can happen to you.”

Dr. Gold’s reference was to former President Donald Trump’s ally Roger Stone, who as an unarmed 66-year-old, without a passport, under investigation for lying to Congress, was arrested in a 2019 predawn swat team raid at his home, with a CNN photographer conveniently present to obtain footage.
One GOP congressman at the time, called this an obvious “disproportionate show of force” and a “political act” meant to “terrify” Trump allies.
Similarly, in 2016 officials from the office of then California attorney general Kamala Harris raided the home of pro-life activist and journalist David Daleiden, who had captured undercover video evidence of Planned Parenthood’s harvesting and sale of aborted babies’ organs and tissue.
Daleiden’s attorney at the time, Matt Heffron, called this action “outrageously out of proportion for the type of crime alleged … a discredit to law enforcement, [and] an oppressive abuse of government power.”

Gold, appearing still dumbfounded by the magnitude of the incident, said “I’m very mainstream, I’m an American, I’m a mom, I’m a doctor and a lawyer for God’s sake. I’ve spent my entire career helping people. I’ve worked in the inner city [with] impoverished people, really all of my career with black and brown people. I also don’t say that too often because I’m not looking for any accolades, I’m just saying, that’s literally who I am. And I got fired from my job because I was giving people medicine that they needed.”
Gold, who has been on the forefront of challenging the government and media narrative regarding the actual dangers of COVID-19, its effective treatment,  masks, lockdowns, and the current distribution of experimental vaccines, indicated—in what appears to be a modest understatement—that the excessive force inflicted upon her by the federal government’s principal law enforcement agency, “does feel a little bit like a persecution.”

‘Reclaim the language. These are experimental vaccines.’

In addressing many of these other critical topics in her interview, Gold began by emphasizing the importance of recognizing new COVID-19 vaccines as being experimental.
“First of all, it’s so important that we reclaim the language. These are not vaccines. These are experimental vaccines,” she said. “This is exactly their status. They are investigational agents only” which will not be authorized as full vaccines until at least 2022.
“This is critical because I don’t understand how physicians in good conscience are rushing head long into recommending an experimental anything for anybody,” Gold said.
Those who do receive the vaccine enroll themselves in a medical trial, which, “almost nobody chooses to do” under normal circumstances when they are provided with this necessary information. And given the clear, official “experimental” status of these injections, such a substance “cannot be mandated,” nor “given willy-nilly to millions or tens of millions of people while it’s still in an experimental trial,” she said.
Due to fertility risks, ‘It’s lunacy’ for young females to receive experimental vaccine
Furthermore, safety concerns with regards to these experimental agents remain significant.
Malkin asked Gold about a December petition advanced by Dr. Michael Yeadon, who previously held Pfizer’s most senior research position in the field of allergy and respiratory medicines prior to his departure in 2011, to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), demanding the immediate suspension of all COVID-19 vaccine studies in Europe, due to four serious health risks.

One of the risks listed in the petition are the real dangers to women’s fertility. As Yeadon explained, these experimental vaccines are expected to produce anti-bodies to attack “spike proteins” such as COVID-19. However, “spike proteins also contain syncytin-homologous proteins, which are essential for the formation of the placenta in mammals such as humans.” Therefore, Yeadon and his colleagues demand that “[it] must be absolutely ruled out” that a coronavirus vaccine would not trigger an immune reaction against this protein, “as otherwise infertility of indefinite duration could result in vaccinated women.”
Government guidance in the U.K. itself urges various groups, including pregnant mothers, not to take the Pfizer experimental COVID vaccine, as well as stating that its impact on fertility is unknown. The World Health Organization issued a similar warning with regards to the Moderna experimental vaccine.
Gold responded by relating the tragic story of a young female physician who, as a strong advocate for the experimental COVID vaccines, completed the injections while in the second trimester of pregnancy and lost her child to miscarriage a few days later.
The AFLD founder explained how losing a pregnancy “in the second trimester is not very common,” and that the typical reason this happens is that “the placenta has some kind of failure.”

This can occur, she said, with pregnant mothers who become infected with COVID-19, as is documented in the AFLD’s white paper on the topic.
“The concern with the experimental COVID vaccine is that it may mimic a permanent COVID status,” she explained. “So, you’re taking a situation that would be time limited,” only for the short duration one endures an infection with the virus, with even the sad possibility of having a miscarriage due to the virus.
“But what would be much worse,” Gold said, would be a scenario where a woman “forever more cannot maintain a pregnancy” because of receiving an experimental COVID-19 vaccine. “So, instead of just the one-time episode of the illness,” Gold continued, a woman may find she instead has “a lifelong episode of infertility.”
Given that the survival rate for individuals under 50 years is 99.98% (without early treatment), Dr. Gold emphasized that “it’s lunacy to get this experimental vaccine if you’re a young female. It’s that simple … I would flat out forbid any young female from getting this vaccine, and I think it’s very unethical for any physician to offer this to a young female.”
Nuremberg Code of 1947: Informed Consent Lacking for experimental vaccine
Malkin also raised the question of the importance of informed consent in standard medical ethics as defined and universally adopted at Nuremberg in 1947.

The Nuremburg Code came about as a result of the post-World War II trials, convictions and executions of Nazi doctors who had conducted deadly experiments, without the subjects’ consent, on prisoners of war.
The Code’s first and most extensive principle provides the strict conditions for establishing voluntary consent, including that the individual may not be exposed to “any element of force, fraud, deceit, duress, overreaching, or other ulterior form of constraint or coercion.” In addition, they must have “sufficient knowledge and comprehension of the elements of the subject matter involved.”
Referring back to the young pregnant physician who received the injections, and the importance of knowing they are experimental, Gold stated, “I don’t even think she knows [the vaccine] was an experimental status only. I’ve had so many conversations with people that don’t even realize it’s investigational status, so how is that informed consent?” she asked. “They don’t write it anywhere,” and one has to search diligently to find the paperwork confirming the investigational status.
“So that’s the beginning and end of the discussion. This is not informed consent. You don’t even know it’s investigational. And very important investigational meds can never be coerced by federal law,” she affirmed.

‘Shocking’ Censorship a ‘crime against humanity,’ ‘breathtaking in its scope’
In a AFLD white paper, the physicians write how the “(m)ost notable” disinformation regarding the pandemic, “was selling the lie to the American and European people that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an unsafe medication.”
As HCQ is “considered one of the safest medications in the world, safer than Motrin or Tylenol,” it has been broadly used outside the west with great success. For example, in response to the virus, India recommended HCQ for its population early last year, and “continues to enjoy a death rate a fraction (~10 percent) of the USA even in the most densely populated slums.”
Gold also pointed out elsewhere that in “Sub-Sahara Africa, the poorest places in the world, no social distancing, no mask, no ICU’s, they have a death rate of one percent the western nations. One percent!”
“Now I believe it is due to widely available HCQ. I don’t think you can explain it for any other reason,” she said.
With Malkin she affirmed that AFLD, a volunteer physicians’ organization, exists to “put out the truth that’s been censored,” on these medical topics.
“I’m stunned at the degree of censorship and the rapidity of it” in these recent months, Gold said. “It’s shocking to me that we can fool people into thinking a drug that’s the most commonly used drug in India (HCQ) for decades … is unsafe.”
“Honestly, I don’t expect it, but this really needs to be almost [treated] like a NAZI war crime tribunal,” she said. The censorship “has been such a crime against humanity. It’s breathtaking in its scope.”

Gold was also sure to encourage people to have HCQ on hand, as “it works if you take it earlier prophylactically” or as early treatment. And since “it can be very difficult to get from your own doctor,” AFLD has made it available at their website.
How to identify propaganda: What was the data prior to the controversy?
Malkin followed-up asking how regular people can actually recognize what is true on these topics when they lack expertise.
Gold explained that she wrote a little book on that topic titled, I Do Not Consent: My Fight Against Medical Cancel Culture, in order to teach readers how to “recognize propaganda in real time.”
“There’s ultimately only two sources of information,” she said, “if you actually know the content yourself, or you know somebody that you trust that you personally vetted.”
“Now a little trick that you can use … is [to ask] what did the science or the data say prior to the controversy? What did the data in scientific journals say about hydroxychloroquine prior to 2020? What did the data in the scientific journals say about masks prior to 2020?” Gold advised.

“One of the ways I recognized that we were living through a lie was not because I’m a physician,” she said. “It’s because I said to my physician peers, ‘how could you say (HCQ) is not safe? It’s been around for 65 years. It’s been studied up the wazoo, it’s been given billions of times in massive doses for years to old people and immune compromised people and to babies and to pregnant women. How can you say it’s not safe?’”
Thus, when a person said to her that they had a safety concern, “I knew that that wasn’t true because of all the evidence prior to the controversy,” she concluded.
Medical Journals involved in propaganda at the behest of Big Pharma
Gold said such propaganda can even come through highly credentialed medical journals, including the case of The Lancet which had to retract a published study whose stated findings proposed dangers to the use of HCQ as a treatment for COVID-19.

She also related a similar story regarding a JAMA study which she personally examined and characterized as “complete garbage,” to the extent that it had “almost like shaken me to my core” that such a piece of work could be published in a credible medical journal.
Getting to the bottom of the cause of this, Gold observed “when you look into it more deeply it turns out,” that “really the only advertisers” for such medical journals, “are pharmaceutical companies.”
Thus, these journals must “bow” to the desires of these big pharma corporations. She made reference to a video of the former health minister of France, Philippe Douste-Blazy, who revealed on a French news program that he was present at a meeting where the heads of at least two of the most prestigious medical journals in the world, The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine, “admitted that they have to do what the pharmaceutical companies say.”

Don’t throw out your own common sense in favor of an expert.

Gold further advised, “you should not throw out your own common sense in favor of an expert. That’s not to say the expert may not be right. They may be right, but you should not automatically assume the expert is correct. You must find a source that you trust and believe. You must look for their motives.”
In the case of AMFD, she said, “we’re volunteers” who are not paid by the government, or by pharmaceuticals, “we’re really not paid at all,” and thus she implicitly suggested this is one reason to consider her organization credible.
Call to action: Sign and spread the petition
In response to projected vaccine mandates, Dr. Gold announced, “we are working on an initiative now to push back on policymakers and decision makers that want to mandate these experimental vaccines.”
AFLD is not primarily concerned with the government, but with private businesses mandating these injections, particularly schools and airlines.
She encouraged everyone to “go to StopMedicalDiscrimination.org and please sign the petition,” as it will “empower us to go to policymakers—really on your behalf—and explain that the American people, or people worldwide, don’t want” these experimental vaccine or mask mandates. “I can guarantee you we will be negotiating or discussing with policy makers, businesses, and airlines.”
“So, everyone who is listening, you must sign this petition, and you must share it because the more people we can show don’t want these [mandates], the better the business leaders will listen to us.”

Most Patriotic Time of Year

“There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.”- Socrates

Most Patriotic Time of Year.

Indeed, it has mirrored political tumult and changes closely throughout the history of the United States.

Much like Memorial Day, With Flag Day in between Independence Day had a slow start.

image.png

Memorial Day

Few know that Memorial Day originated during the Civil War era. First called Decoration Day, this day was set aside for veterans, families, and civilians to decorate the grave sites of soldiers and servicemen they wished to honor and remember. Believed to be established around 1868, Decoration Day was first suggested by a veteran fraternity, called the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).  Historical accounts state that GAR wanted a nationally observed holiday for veterans to attend ceremonies and remembrance services without losing a day’s wage.

It wasn’t until nearly 100 years later and long after World War I and II that legislation was passed to put uniformity around national holidays. In 1968, the “National Holiday Act” touched on a broad list of celebrated days and prompted national holiday observances to be on Mondays. This is when Decoration Day became Memorial Day. To give more credibility to the holiday, Congress deemed that Memorial Day would be set aside for all war veterans who had died, not only those from the Civil War. This distinction took a couple of years; therefore, Memorial Day didn’t become an official national holiday until 1971.

We celebrate Memorial Day by visiting grave sites, memorials and attending parades to honor the many military lives lost.

 image.png

Independence Day

Following on the heels of Memorial Day is Independence Day or July 4th. Commonly associated with the military due to the military guns and cannons often fired on this day, Independence Day is not military affiliated. The shots often heard are gun salutes to represent the original thirteen founding colonies. Independence Day is the day the thirteen colonies (the United States) declared independence from Great Britain. More importantly, July 4, 1776 is the day the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Many speculate that the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4th, 1826 sparked a resurgence in the importance of the day. But, it took nearly another 50 years, in 1870, for the holiday to be officially recognized by Congress. This holiday is celebrated with picnics, fireworks, the American flag, and lots of family time &  favorite BBQ recipes.

󾓦

You probably know what the American flag looks like today.

But did you know that the design of the American flag has evolved over the years?

The flag of the United States of America has gone through 27 different iterations, and plays a big part in the lives of Americans and American culture. Here are some interesting and fun facts to know about the iconic Stars and Stripes. 9 Amazing Facts About The American Flag!.

It was adopted in 1777

Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the American flag on June 14, 1777. The first official version of the flag (1777) displayed 13 stripes and 13 stars, for the 13 original colonies.

More stars than stripes

For a while, the U.S. added stripes and stars to the flag when welcoming new states. When Kentucky and Vermont joined the union, the flag took on two more stars from the original, so that from 1795 to 1818, 15 stripes and 15 stars graced the flag. Anticipating a crowded field of stripes, lawmakers decided to honor each new state with a star, and leave the stripes at the original 13, after 1818.

It was designed by a high school student

The current flag, with 50 stars and 13 stripes, was designed in 1958 by 17-year-old high school student, Robert G. Heft, of Lancaster, Ohio

President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose his design out of 1,500 entries.

Red, white, and blue

The colors of the flag have important meanings. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Maintenance of the flag

If a flag can no longer be used or repaired, it must be destroyed in a respectful manner, such as by burning. It can be washed and dry cleaned if it gets dirty or if it touches the ground and is soiled.

Sleep-wake schedule

According to Federal flag laws and regulations, the flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, except during inclement weather. It may be displayed 24 hours a day as long as it’s “properly illuminated” while it’s dark out.

Presidential proclamations and laws authorize the display of the flag 24 hours a day at the following places:

  • Fort McHenry, National Monument and Historic Shrine, Baltimore, Maryland
  • Flag House Square, Baltimore, Maryland.
  • United States Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima), Arlington, Virginia.
  • On the Green of the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts.
  • The White House, Washington, D.C.
  • United States customs ports of entry.
  • Grounds of the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge State Park, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin Place American Flag On The Moon.

In July 1969, Neil Armstrong placed the first U.S. flag on the moon, as part of the Apollo 11 mission, the first manned landing. Five more Apollo moon landings—from missions 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17—resulted in five more flags being planted on the surface of the moon.

The proper way to view a flag on display during a parade or review (except for people in uniform) is by facing the flag with your right hand over your heart, according to Federal flag laws and regulations. The same goes for when you witness the flag being raised or lowered as part of a ceremony.

Old Glory origins

Old Glory was the nickname of a specific U.S. Flag — that owned by sea captain William Driver. He was given the flag by his mother and other women in his hometown of Salem. He named it Old Glory upon seeing it flying on his ship’s mast in 1831, and continued to display it outside his home. The name later went on to become synonymous with any American flag

Who made the American flag? | Myth Stories

Betsy Ross is widely credited with designing the first American flag, but there is almost no evidence to support that claim. It’s true that she sewed a lot of flags. However, the fact that she created the first American flag is supported only by records from her own grandson in 1870, almost 100 years after the flag debuted, when he presented the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with affidavits from his own family members as evidence.

Flag Day

The first American flag design was approved by Congress on June 14, 1777. It had 13 stripes, which represented the original 13 colonies of the United States. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing Flag Day as the anniversary of the Flag Resolution. On August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress that designated June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.

But as the USA rapidly expanded after the colonial period, and as new states were added, the flag had to evolve along with the changing composition of the country. Between 1777 and 1960, Congress passed multiple acts that changed the design of the flag to reflect new realities as new states were admitted.

It was too cluttered to add new stripes for every state, so it was decided that the number of stripes would stay the same—13 for the 13 original colonies. The new states would be reflected in the number of stars in the box in the top left corner of the flag.

During the Civil War, the states of the Confederacy stopped flying the American flag and instead designed and flew their own flag, the Confederate Battle Flag.

And did you know that there is a significance to the American colors used in the flag? Red represents hardiness and valor, while white stands for purity and blue for perseverance and justice.

The flag has inspired not only much controversy but also artists, from Jasper Johns to Francis Scott Key, who composed the famous “Star Spangled Banner” after watching the huge 1814 garrison flag survive the shelling of Fort McHenry by the British, which went on for over 24 hours. The flag that inspired Key’s song is under intensive conservation efforts by the National Museum of American History to preserve it.

Americans have also taken their flag abroad and, famously, to outer space; in 1969, Neil Armstrong placed the American flag on the moon. Barry Bishop set the flag on the top of Mt. Everest in 1963, and Robert Peary put it on the North Pole in 1909.

The flag is usually lowered at sunset and often to half-mast when a beloved public figure dies. But there are a few places where the flag always flutters, including the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial) in Arlington, Virginia, and the White House.

So, the next time you see the flag, stop and consider how much history it represents.

Wild turkey versus Bald eagle …

For such a seemingly simple bird, the turkey carries with it some surprisingly heavy symbolic baggage. The turkey is undeniably tied with the American experience. It’s the bird most Americans readily associate with Thanksgiving and Christmas; both holidays when families travel across the country to gather around the table and share.

What might be somewhat surprising for those who haven’t heard is that the founding father Benjamin Franklin supposedly wanted the turkey to be the national symbol of the United States of America. According to the popular legend, Franklin advocated for the turkey instead of the Bald Eagle but was unable to convince others of adopting the humble bird as the national symbol.

So, is this myth about Benjamin Franklin and the turkey true? It seems that the answer lies with an oversimplification of words in a letter that Franklin once wrote to his daughter, Sarah. In this letter, Franklin suggests that the bald eagle is “of bad moral character,” and that the country would be much better served by the turkey as its symbol.

Here is the portion of the letter, provided by The Franklin Institute’s website.“For my own part I wish the Eagle had not been chosen the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead tree near the river, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the labor of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a fish, and is bearing it to his nest for the support of his mate and young ones, the Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

With all this injustice, he is never in a good situation but like those among men who live by sharpening & robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. He is therefore by no means a proper emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our country…

I am on this account not displeased that the figure is not known as an Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the truth the Turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and with a true original native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a bird of courage, and would not hesitate to attack a grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his farm yard with a red coat on.”

Ben Franklin’s Other Ideas
His 1775 letter in the Pennsylvania Journal made a good case for the Rattlesnake as an appropriate symbol of “the temper and conduct of America.”

In 1776, Franklin’s official suggestion while on the first Great Seal committee was an historic scene with Moses and Pharaoh, which that committee recommended for the reverse side of the Great Seal.

Three other kinds of birds were suggested by William Barton of the third committee: a rooster, a dove, and a “phoenix in flames.”

“Because of their size, bald eagles are not concerned about threats from other birds. However, eagles are often chased by smaller birds, who are trying to protect their young. . . It was Benjamin Franklin’s observations of a bald eagle either ignoring or retreating from such mobbing that probably led to his claim of the bald eagle’s lack of courage.” ( American Bald Eagle Information)

From context, it seems clear that Franklin wasn’t making a joke.

Instead of making an actual suggestion, he was merely pointing out that in his mind, the eagle symbol looked like a turkey, joking that the turkey would be a more suitable bird anyway.  Bald Eagle or Wild Turkey?

Mindful Eating

It’s easy to get confused about which foods are healthy and which aren’t.

Just the Facts: Food and Cooking | Greatist

20 Foods That Are Bad for Your Health
By Kris Gunnars, BSc, updated on January 7, 2021.

You generally want to avoid certain foods if you want to lose weight and prevent chronic illnesses. In this article, healthy alternatives are mentioned whenever possible.

Here are 20 foods that are generally unhealthy — although most people can eat them in moderation on special occasions without any permanent damage to their health.

1. Sugary Drinks

Added sugar is one of the worst ingredients in the modern diet.

However, some sources of sugar are worse than others, and sugary drinks are particularly harmful. Sugar Stacks – How Much Sugar Is in That?

When you drink liquid calories, your brain doesn’t appear to register them as food. Thus, you may end up drastically increasing your total calorie intake (123).
When consumed in large amounts, sugar can drive insulin resistance and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It’s also associated with various serious conditions, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease (456).
Some people believe that sugary drinks are the most fattening aspect of the modern diet — and drinking them in large amounts can drive fat gain and obesity (789).

Sugary Drink Alternatives
Drink water, soda water, coffee, or tea instead.
Adding a slice of lemon to water or soda water can provide a burst of flavor.

2. Most Pizzas

Pizza is one of the world’s most popular  junk foods.
Most commercial pizzas are made with unhealthy ingredients, including highly refined dough and heavily processed meat. Pizza also tends to be extremely high in calories.
Is pizza healthy – Bing

Pizza Alternatives
Some restaurants offer healthier ingredients. Homemade pizzas can also be very healthy, as long as you choose wholesome ingredients.

3. White Bread

Most commercial breads are unhealthy if eaten in large amounts, as they’re made from refined wheat, which is low in fiber and essential nutrients and may lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar (10).

White Bread Alternatives
For people who can tolerate gluten, Ezekiel bread is an excellent choice. Whole-grain bread is also healthier than white bread.
If you have problems with gluten or carbs, then here are 15 recipes for breads that are both gluten-free and low in carbs.

4. Most Fruit Juices

Fruit juice is often assumed to be healthy.
While juice contains some antioxidants and vitamin C, it also packs high amounts of liquid sugar.
In fact, fruit juice harbors just as much sugar as sugary drinks like Coke or Pepsi — and sometimes even more (11).

Fruit Juice Alternatives
Some fruit juices have been shown to have health benefits despite their sugar content, such as pomegranate and blueberry juices. However, these should be considered occasional supplements, not an everyday part of your diet.

5. Sweetened Breakfast Cereals

Breakfast cereals are processed cereal grains, such as wheat, oats, rice, and corn.
They’re especially popular among children and frequently eaten with milk.
To make them more palatable, the grains are roasted, shredded, pulped, rolled, or flaked. They’re generally high in added sugar.
The main downside of most breakfast cereals is their high added sugar content. Some are so sweet that they could even be compared to candy.

Sweetened Breakfast Cereal Alternatives
Choose breakfast cereals that are high in fiber and low in added sugar.
Even better, make your own oat porridge from scratch.

6. Fried, Grilled, or Broiled Food

Frying, grilling, and broiling are among the unhealthiest cooking methods.
Foods cooked in these ways are often highly palatable and calorie-dense. Several types of unhealthy chemical compounds also form when food is cooked under high heat.
These include acrylamides, acrolein, heterocyclic amines, oxysterols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) (121314151617).
Many chemicals formed during high-heat cooking have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease (181920).

Fried, Grilled, or Broiled Food Alternatives
To improve your health, choose milder and healthier cooking methods, such as boiling, stewing, blanching, and steaming.

7. Pastries, Cookies, Cakes & Donuts

Most pastries, cookies, and cakes are unhealthy if eaten in excess.
Packaged versions are generally made with refined sugar, refined wheat flour, and added fats. Shortening, which may be high in unhealthy trans fats, is sometimes added.
These treats might be tasty, but they have almost no essential nutrients, copious calories, and many preservatives. 25 Best Krispy Kreme Donut Flavors, Ranked | FamilyMinded

Pastry, Cookie, and Cake Alternatives
If you can’t stay away from dessert, spring for Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, or dark chocolate.

8. French Fries and Potato Chips

Whole, white potatoes are very healthy.
However, the same cannot be said of French fries and potato chips.
These foods are very high in calories, and it’s easy to eat excessive amounts. Several studies link French fries and potato chips to weight gain (2122).
These foods may also contain large amounts of acrylamides, which are carcinogenic substances that form when potatoes are fried, baked, or roasted (2324).

French Fry and Potato Chip Alternatives
Potatoes are best consumed boiled, not fried. If you need something crunchy to replace potato chips, try baby carrots or nuts.

9. Gluten-Free Junk Foods

About one-third of the U.S. population actively tries to avoid gluten (25).
Yet, people often replace healthy, gluten-containing foods with processed junk foods that happen to be gluten-free. These gluten-free replacement products are often high in sugar and refined grains like corn starch or tapioca starch. These ingredients may trigger rapid spikes in blood sugar and are low in essential nutrients.

Gluten-Free Junk Food Alternatives

Choose foods that are naturally gluten-free, such as unprocessed plant and animal foods.

10. Agave Nectar

Agave nectar is a sweetener that’s often marketed as healthy.
However, it’s highly refined and extremely high in fructose. High amounts of fructose from added sweeteners can be absolutely disastrous for health (26).
In fact, agave nectar is even higher in fructose than many other sweeteners.
Whereas table sugar is 50% fructose and high-fructose corn syrup around
55%, agave nectar is 85% fructose (27).

Agave Nectar Alternatives
Stevia and erythritol are healthy, natural, and calorie-free alternatives.

11. Low-Fat Yogurt

Yogurt can be incredibly healthy.
Nonetheless, most yogurts found in the grocery store are bad for you.
They’re often low in fat but loaded with sugar to compensate for the flavor that fat provides. Put simply, most yogurt has had its healthy, natural fats replaced with an unhealthy ingredient.
Additionally, many yogurts don’t provide probiotic bacteria as generally believed. They’re often pasteurized, which kills most of their bacteria.

Low-Fat Yogurt Alternatives

Choose regular, full-fat yogurt that contains live or active cultures (probiotics). If possible, buy varieties from grass-fed cows.

12. Low-Carb Junk Foods

Low-carb diets are very popular.
While you can eat plenty of whole foods on such a diet, you should watch out for processed low-carb replacement products. These include low-carb candy bars and meal replacements.
These foods are often highly processed and packed with additives.

Low-Carb Junk Food Alternatives
If you’re on a low-carb diet, aim for foods that are naturally low in carbs, which include eggs, seafood, and leafy greens.

13. Ice Cream

Ice cream may be delicious, but it’s loaded with sugar.
This dairy product is also high in calories and easy to overeat. If you eat it as a dessert, you’re usually piling it on top of your normal calorie intake. What Is Ice Cream and How Is It Made? (thespruceeats.com)

Ice Cream Alternatives
It’s possible to opt for healthier brands or make your own ice cream using fresh fruit and less sugar.

14. Candy Bars

Candy Bars – are incredibly unhealthy.
They’re high in sugar, refined wheat flour, and processed fats while also very low in essential nutrients. What’s more, these treats will leave you hungry because of the way that your body metabolizes these sugar bombs.

Candy Bar Alternatives
Eat fruit or a piece of quality dark chocolate instead of the healthiest candy bar names.

15. Processed Meat
Even though unprocessed meat can be healthy and nutritious, the same is not true for processed meats.
Studies show that people who eat processed meats have a higher risk of many serious ailments, including colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease (2829).
Most of these studies are observational in nature, meaning that they can’t prove that processed meat is to blame. However, the statistical link is strong and consistent between studies.

Processed Meat Alternatives

If you want to eat bacon, sausages, or pepperoni, try to buy from local butchers who don’t add many unhealthy ingredients.

16. Processed Cheese

Cheese is healthy in moderation.
It’s loaded with nutrients, and a single slice packs all the nutrients as a glass of milk.
Still, processed cheese products are nothing like regular cheese. They’re mostly made with filler ingredients that are engineered to have a cheese-like appearance and texture.
Make sure to read labels to confirm that your cheese contains dairy and few artificial ingredients.

Processed Cheese Alternatives
Eat real cheese instead. Healthy types include feta, mozzarella, and cottage cheeses. Many vegan cheese alternatives can also be good choices.

17. Most Fast Food Meals

Generally speaking, fast-food chains serve junk food.
Most of their offerings are mass-produced and low in nutrients. Despite their low prices, fast foods may contribute to disease risk and harm your general wellness. You should especially watch out for fried items.

Fast Food Alternatives
As a result of mounting pressure, many fast-food chains have started offering healthy options.

18. High-Calorie Coffee Drinks

Coffee is loaded with antioxidants and offers many benefits.
Notably, coffee drinkers have a lower risk of serious diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s (3031). At the same time, the creamers, syrups, additives, and sugars that are frequently added to coffee are highly unhealthy. These products are just as harmful
as any other sugar-sweetened beverage.

High-Calorie Coffee Drink Alternatives
Drink plain coffee instead. You can add small amounts of heavy cream
or full-fat milk if you desire.

19. Anything with Added Sugar or Refined Grains

It’s important to avoid — or at least limit — foods that contain added sugar, refined grains, and artificial trans fats. These are some of the unhealthiest but most common ingredients in the modern diet. Thus, the importance of reading labels cannot be overstated.
This even applies to so-called health foods.

Added Sugar and Refined Grain Alternatives

High-fiber food
Aim for nutrient-dense, whole foods, such as fresh fruits and whole grains.

20. Most Highly Processed Foods

The simplest way to eat healthy and lose weight is to avoid processed foods as much as possible. Processed goods are often packaged and loaded with excess salt or sugar.

Highly Processed Food Alternatives
When you’re shopping, make sure to read food labels.
Try to load up your cart with plenty of veggies and other whole foods.

The Bottom Line:
Though the Western diet packs plenty of junk food, you can maintain a healthy diet if you steer clear of the processed, high-sugar items mentioned above.
If you focus on whole foods, you’ll be well on your way to feeling better and reclaiming your health.

Plus, practicing mindfulness when you eat by listening to your body’s cues and paying attention to flavors and textures can help you be more aware of how much and what you eat, allowing you to achieve a better relationship with food.  Source  20 Foods That Are Bad for Your Health (healthline.com)

The Road To Fit

Matthew 6:34 KJV is “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” It is the thirty-fourth, and final, verse of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament and is part of the Sermon on the Mount. This verse concludes the discussion of worry about material provisions.

“It takes a certain amount of courage and willingness to be vulnerable to understand that is okay to be angry” ~ Kale Panoho,

Why do nice guys finish first  ….

5 Things to Start With

1. The only person you can make happy is yourself.

2. Learn to embrace change. Learn to ride the wave!

3. Learn from the past and live for the future.

4. Build yourself up. God don’t make no junk

5. Have faith in God’s plan, he only wants the best for you.

If you’ve ever seen pros cross the finish line and visibly struggle to straighten up and stretch their spine to a normal upright position, you know that lower back pain from cycling is common across all ranks. In fact, a survey of more than 100 pro cyclists during training camps published in 2010 showed that back pain accounted for the majority—45 percent—of aches and pains. Surveys of recreational cyclists show about one-third battle back pain now and again.

“Back pain is very common in cyclists and can arise from many different root causes, including bike fit, training history, personal health issues, riding style, and what you do during your daily life off the bike,” says Matthew Silvis, M.D., medical director of primary care sports medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Group in Palmyra, PA, who specializes in the care of injured endurance athletes. To fight—and win—the battle with lower back pain, you need to address it on all of those fronts. Here’s how.

Dial in Your Fit

“The first place to look is your bike fit,” says Silvis. “I spend a lot of office visit time educating my patients about bike fit. Very often, adjustments resolve the problem and prevent it from recurring.” Specifically, a bike setup that is too long for you can cause an aching back by forcing you to be too stretched out. Assuming your bike is the correct size for you, that could mean a stem that is too long, a saddle that’s too far back, and/or a handlebar that’s too low.

Fast fix: You want to be set up so you can comfortably reach your bars from an upright position and so your elbows have a slight bend when you’re in the riding position. Try a shorter, high-rise stem. Add spacers under your stem. Check your saddle setback (though don’t bring it all the way forward; that’s bad for your knees). If you spend a lot of time in the drops, consider a bar with a shallower drop. If you spend a lot of time in the saddle or are prone to back pain, a professional fit is definitely in order.

Work Your Core

“A lot of people I see miss their core entirely during training. That’s a big problem because as a cyclist, you use your core muscles to generate power and control the movement of your bicycle,” says Silvis. “When your core is relatively weak, you’ll get fatigue and back strain and pain much sooner than someone who is better conditioned in their lumbar spine area.”

You want to particularly focus on the “inner unit” of the core—the muscles that attach to the lowest vertebra (known as L5), namely the transverse abdominis (the deepest ab muscles that wrap horizontally around your midsection like a corset) and multifidus (the muscles running vertically along your spine). These muscles act as an anchor to stabilize you in the saddle.

In a study published in 2015 in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, researchers compared the strength of these muscles in a group of mountain bikers with and without lower back pain. The difference between the riders: The riders with pain had less-developed transverse abdominals and lumbar multifidus spinae, so they had less lower back endurance.

Fast fix: Perform core exercises that target your inner unit. Aim for 2 sets of 15 reps three days a week.

Reverse Crunch

Lie faceup with arms at your side and feet off the floor with knees bent so shins are parallel to the floor. Inhale and draw your abs in as you lift your hips off the floor, curl your pelvis to your ribcage, and knees toward your chest. Pause, then exhale and return to the starting position.

Bird Dog

Kneel on your hands and knees. Keep your back straight and your head and neck in line with your back. Extend your right arm and left leg out, bringing them up and in line with your back, or slightly higher than your trunk, if possible. Pause, squeezing your glute and back muscles to maintain balance. Bring your arm and leg back in and under you, touching elbow to knee. Return to the starting position, and repeat to the opposite side. Alternate for a full set on each side.

Don’t Forget Your Hips

“Often, the culprit is not the back, but the pelvis,” says Silvis. “You want to be able to sit on the saddle with proper pelvic positioning—a slight forward tilt—so you can maintain a neutral and not overly flexed spine.” Many cyclists have significant muscle imbalances and general immobility throughout their hip region in the form of dominant quads, weak outer glutes, and tight psoas (the muscle that attaches the lower spine to the femur and acts as a hip flexor). All of that can accumulate in poor pelvic positioning and lower back pain.

Fast fix: Stretch and foam roll all your lower body muscles regularly. Also, add this hip stability move to your repertoire three days a week to strengthen and stretch all the right places:

Fire Hydrant with Rotation

Kneel on your hands and knees. Keep your back straight and your head and neck in line with your back. Draw your navel toward your spine. Pull your left knee to your chest. Contract the left glute and lift the leg out to the side of your hip, like a dog marking a fire hydrant, then rotate back and around in a circle. Repeat for 5 to 6 rotations; then reverse direction for 5 to 6 rotations. Switch legs.

Ramp Up Your Riding Wisely

Sometimes back pain is just a matter of doing too much too soon, says Silvis. Because cycling is low impact it’s easy for us to get gung ho on the first nice days of the year and ride longer and harder than our supporting muscles are conditioned for. “Then you pay for that later…like the next ride,” he says.

Fast fix: Rein yourself in a bit and ramp up your riding in a progressive way, increasing your weekly mileage by no more than 20 to 25 percent. That’s especially important for your weekly long ride.

Change Positions Frequently

By definition, chronic injury like back pain is the result of repetitive, cumulative stress that leads to tissue damage. Sitting fixed in one position for hours on end increases that risk.

Fast fix: This is an easy one: Move around a little out there. Change positions from the tops to the hoods to the drops. Stand up out of the saddle and take a few pedal strokes. Scoot forward or back a bit on your seat. Give your body a break from the same position a few times an hour.

Going Up? Shift Down

Sitting and mashing a monster gear places undue stress on your back and fatigues your glutes and hamstrings, which can cause your pelvis to tilt backwards and put even more strain on your lumbar muscles, says Silvis.

Fast fix: Use your gears! Try to keep the load low enough so you can spin a cadence of around 80 rpm while you climb.

[Want to fly up hills? Climb! gives you the workouts and mental strategies to conquer your nearest peak.]

Move More

“Many of the people I see have pain because they sit all day long and then hop on their bike, bringing their general tightness and stiffness along for the ride,” says Silvis.

Fast fix: Work is work, and you’ve got to be at a desk when you have to be at a desk, but if possible, manipulate your environment to put your body in motion more throughout the day. Request a convertible workstation that allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day; swap a stability ball for your office chair, and use your lunch time to get up and at least take a quick walk. “All those little movements add up to a big benefit for your back,” says Silvis.

What Patients Want to Know About Stress

(First panel)

Subhead: How Well Do You Adapt to Stress?

Not all stress is bad. A 20-minute workout for a fit and trim 65-year old is good stress.

The same workout for an out-of-shape 35-year old would likely be bad stress!

Whether your body considers stress good or bad is largely a function of how well it can accommodate it.

Ultimately, this capacity is based on the condition of your nervous system.

Photo caption: Not all stress is bad! Our reaction to stress is based upon our conditioning and overall health.

(Inside spread)

Headline: It’s Not the Stress – It’s Your Reaction to It That Matters!

Stress is part of everyday living. In fact, a stress-free life would be boring! Life is enjoyable when we have ample resources to experience and overcome the stresses we face.

Subhead: Physical Stress

A whiplash injury from a car accident is an obvious source of physical stress. As is repetitive motions, a slip and fall, lack of sleep or overdoing it in the garden. Early on, learning to walk, ride a bike and the birth process itself are sources of physical stress.

Accumulated stress exhausts our reserves. Then, something as simple as mowing the lawn can put us over the edge. Chiropractic care helps restore your adaptive capacity.

Subhead: Emotional Stress

Fear, grief, anger and other emotions affect our entire body. Notice the posture of someone who is sad or depressed. Frustration, or a sense of powerlessness at work, is a common form of emotional stress.

Clearly, it’s not the stress, but our response to it that is critical. Chiropractic care, because its focus is to reduce tension to your nervous system, can help you respond more resourcefully.

Subhead: Chemical Stress

Common sources of chemical stress include poor nutrition, sugar, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Drugs, preservatives, tobacco, alcohol, vaccinations, pollen and a host of other substances affect our nervous system, muscle tone and our spine.

The problem isn’t the pollen or chemical. Because not everyone reacts. Symptoms can appear when you lose your ability to adapt. Chiropractic care has helped millions reduce or eliminate reactions to many types of chemical stress.

If you lack the reserves to adapt to stress in a healthy way, stress takes its toll. If your body reacts by “tripping a circuit breaker” and causing vertebral subluxation, chiropractic care is likely help.

Subhead: How can stress affect my spine?

Think of your spinal cord as a guitar string. The greater the tension, the higher the note. Your nervous system has “tone” as well. With each stressor, your body tightens up, like bracing yourself for a tight curve on a roller coaster. The weakest joints of your spine are forced out of their normal position. Like the shrill notes from an over-tightened string, your body loses its capacity to respond to the full range of human experience.

Subhead: Can chiropractic care solve all my stress?

Of course not. Much of the emotional stress we experience is largely self-induced. Imagine how much pain and suffering results from attaching inappropriate meanings to events in our lives. Or the constant burden we experience by not forgiving others. Stress is a natural part of life. Chiropractic care can’t eliminate stress, but it can help increase your capacity to accommodate it.

Stress is so common many patients take it for granted!

Here’s a way to reveal the many causes of vertebral subluxation.

Most patients don’t realize there are three types of stress.

Most patients encounter stress so frequently they think it’s normal.

Most patients don’t get the results they could because of their stressful lives.

Except your patients! Place this one in your report room or adjusting area and help patients realize some of the most common physical, emotional and chemical stressors in their lives.

You might invite a patient over to your poster and ask, “How many sources of stress can you find?”

There are more than you think. We count at least 16 of them:

  1. The physical stress of improper lifting.
  2. The emotional stress of moving.
  3. The physical stress of cradling the phone with a shoulder.
  4. The emotional stress of having too many phones.
  5. The physical stress of wearing high heel shoes.
  6. The emotional stress of credit card debt.
  7. The emotional stress of relationships (marriage).
  8. The emotional stress of depression.
  9. The chemical stress of coffee.
  10. The chemical stress of artificial sweeteners.
  11. The chemical stress of tobacco.
  12. The chemical stress of prescription medications.
  13. The chemical stress of vaccines.
  14. The physical stress of an injection.
  15. The chemical stress of alcohol.
  16. The chemical stress of junk food.

If subluxation is the centerpiece of your practice, that’s great. Now, make the identification and reduction of the cause of subluxations the focus of your patient education! Here’s a wall graphic that can help you broach the subject.

Zoonotic Transmission

We still don’t know the origins of the coronavirus. Here are 4 scenarios.

U.S. covid-19 deaths fall to lowest point since March 2020
By (1) Jon Kamp, (2) Talal Ansari.

The average number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. has fallen to the lowest point in more than a year, a fresh sign that vaccinations are lessening the worst effects of the pandemic. The seven-day average for newly reported deaths fell to 432 on Thursday, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data collected by Johns Hopkins University. The figure hasn’t been this low since late March 2020, in the early days of the pandemic, the data show.
The current average marks the lowest point for average daily deaths after any surge during the pandemic, falling below a prior low of about 520 daily deaths early last summer, the data show. It follows a sharp drop in newly reported Covid-19 cases, with the seven-day average falling below 20,000 this week for the first time since last March. On Thursday, the average was 15,030.
“This milestone reinforces that the U.S. is in the homestretch of the epidemic, thanks to vaccinations,” said Andrew Brouwer, an assistant research scientist in epidemiology at the University of Michigan. More than half of the U.S. adult population has reached full-vaccination status, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For those 65 and older, that figure stands at 75%.

The high rates of vaccinations among elderly people, who are most likely to
die from Covid-19 infections, have helped push the number of deaths lower. And the steady decline in newly reported cases indicates that deaths, a lagging indicator, will continue to shrink. “Vaccinations are extremely effective against severe Covid disease and death and are now widely available,” Dr. Brouwer said.
Hospitalizations have also been consistently falling, with the latest data posted by the Department of Health and Human Services showing 23,240 Covid-19 patients in hospitals across the U.S., down from 39,810 a month ago and a high of 142,273 in mid-January. Doctors say treatment protocols for Covid-19 patients have steadily improved, and may be saving lives. But the starkest benefit is likely the vaccine.
Four out of every five Covid-19 deaths have been in people over 65,
and that population is now significantly shielded by inoculations. For people who aren’t vaccinated and get infected, drug treatments called monoclonal antibodies have helped patients recover faster and prevented them from developing severe cases, doctors say. In clinical trials, the drugs reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by 70% in people with mild-to-moderate symptoms.

The actual count of recent deaths may actually be lower. There have been several incidents of states catching up with backlogs in reporting, which have inflated recent death counts. States sometimes don’t backdate these deaths to when they occurred. Kentucky on June 1 said there were 260 previously unreported deaths found during an audit. Maryland and Oklahoma have also recently posted revisions.
These recent backlogged mortality reports have made it difficult to measure
the portion of cases that become deaths, which is another way to track how vaccines are turning the tide. Still, this ratio—which the Journal measures with a 28-day gap between cases and death to cover what experts say is a likely reporting gap between the two metrics—had recently trended lower.
Covid-19 shots are also bearing fruit in other countries that are deep into their mass-vaccination campaigns. In the U.K., where half of adults are fully vaccinated and another quarter are awaiting their second dose, daily deaths have fallen to levels not seen since early March 2020, when the pandemic was just taking hold. The seven-day average of new Covid-19 deaths in the U.K. was 7.7 Thursday, according to government data, which compares with a peak of more than 1,200 daily deaths reported during the country’s most recent wave of infection in January.

Public-health officials estimate vaccines have averted 13,000 deaths this year so far and prevented more than 39,000 hospitalizations. Despite the good news in the U.S., there are regional variations in Covid-19 metrics that could affect the pandemic in coming months. Although 52% of American adults are fully vaccinated, the percentage varies by state. At the top of the list is Vermont, where nearly 57% of the entire population is fully vaccinated.
At the bottom is Mississippi, where 27.5% of the population has been inoculated.
Last summer saw new Covid-19 cases surge across parts of the South and Southwest amid re-openings and rising temperatures that pushed more people to the air-conditioned indoors. Some epidemiologists and public-health officials worry that lower vaccination rates in the South could lead to a rise in infections this summer, though few expect case counts to reach as high as last year, given the broader vaccine uptake nationally.
Covid-19 also continues to rage in less-vaccinated parts of the world, indicating that, globally, the pandemic is far from over. High infection rates world-wide also create a continuing risk of new and dangerous Covid-19 variants, epidemiologists say. Scientists and public-health officials in the U.K. are concerned about the rapid spread there of a variant first detected in India and given the name Delta by the World Health Organization.

British data suggest that two doses of vaccine provide substantial protection against the variant but that people awaiting their second shot may be less well protected against infection. Studies have suggested that vaccines available in the U.S. protect against variants of the coronavirus that have emerged, although perhaps not as strongly as against early strains. Health officials and vaccine makers are exploring ways to prolong immunity and better protect people.
The search continues for the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19—
and the pathway it took to leap from animals to humans. Wreaking havoc across the globe, infecting more than 171 million people and killing more than 3.6 million, as of June 3. On May 26, the Biden administration directed U.S. intelligence officials to take a closer look at the virus’s origins,  including zoonotic transmission—the virus spilling over from another animal to humans—and the possibility of an accidental leak from a laboratory where a wild sample containing SARS-CoV-2 might have been studied.
Until now, the biggest look into the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was a World Health Organization report released on March 30 by a team of international researchers who traveled to China to investigate four possible scenarios in which the SARS-CoV-2 virus might have caused the initial outbreak. In the weeks since, however, world governments have expressed concern that the investigators lacked access to complete data, while scientists say that the report has shed little light on how the virus got jump-started.

Quick and definitive answers are impossible, given that it typically takes
years to trace a virus back to its roots—if researchers manage to do so at all, says Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University Medical Center. But in this case, she says, “I think we do have enough evidence to say that some are more likely
than others.”
In the WHO report, the team found that the virus most likely jumped from
one animal to another before making its way to humans. They also looked at evidence supporting theories that the virus passed into humans directly from an original host animal, or that it traveled through the supply chain for frozen and refrigerated foods. In addition, the team addressed the possibility that the virus had been collected in the wild and then accidentally leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan—a scenario they determined is “extremely unlikely.”
The WHO report underscores the virus’s likely natural origins, drawing on compelling evidence that SARS-CoV-2 arose in the wild and was not “engineered.” Many scientists, including Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have long dismissed the notion that the virus was manufactured.

(See Fauci’s exclusive interview with National Geographic in which he explained why he thinks SARS-CoV-2 had a natural origin.)

Here’s a look at the evidence the WHO report lays out for each of the four theories—and what experts make of them as possible origin stories for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

1. Direct spillover from animals to humans
WHO ASSESSMENT: possible to likely
The first origin story for SARS-CoV-2 is simple: It suggests that the virus started out in an animal—probably a bat—that came into contact with a human. Boom, infected. At that point, the virus immediately began to spread to other humans.
The WHO report cites strong evidence showing that most coronaviruses that infect humans come from animals, including the virus that caused the SARS epidemic in 2003. Bats are thought to be the most likely culprits, as they host
a virus that is genetically related to SARS-CoV-2.
The report acknowledges the possibility that the virus spread to humans from pangolins or minks. But David Robertson, head of viral genomics and bioinformatics at the University of Glasgow, says the WHO joint team sampled many animal species beyond bats for the report. The analyses point to bats as the reservoir species.
“So what you have to worry about then is how did it get from bats to humans?” Robertson says. “Did somebody go into an area, get infected, and then get a train to Wuhan?”
Direct transmission between bats and humans is possible: Studies have shown that people who live near bat caves in southern China’s Yunnan Province have antibodies to bat coronaviruses. But most humans generally don’t spend much time around bats, unless they are bat scientists (who typically wear protective equipment). So it’s unclear why, if the virus jumped from bats directly to humans, the first outbreak would have occurred in Wuhan, a thousand miles away from the bat caves of Yunnan.
Furthermore, the report notes that it would take decades for even the closely related bat coronavirus to evolve into SARS-CoV-2. Since scientists haven’t found a bat virus that would provide the missing link, the WHO team assessed this theory as “possible to likely.”

2. Spillover from animals to humans through an intermediate host
WHO ASSESSMENT: likely to very likely
In the absence of a smoking gun showing that bats passed the virus directly to humans, scientists believe the more likely theory is that the virus first traveled through another animal, such as a mink or a pangolin. Unlike bats, these animals have regular contact with humans—particularly if they’re being raised on a farm or trafficked in the illegal wildlife trade.
If the virus jumped first to another animal, that might also explain how it adapted to be harmful to humans—although Robertson says that the virus likely wouldn’t have had to change much. Genomic analyses suggest that SARS-CoV-2 is a generalist virus rather than one specifically adapted to humans, explaining why it can easily jump among pangolins, mink, cats, and other species.
The WHO report points out that this is the path that previous coronaviruses have taken to infect humans. The SARS virus, for example, is thought to have passed from bats to palm civets before causing a human epidemic in 2002. Meanwhile, the virus that causes MERS has been found in dromedary camels throughout the Middle East.
Daniel Lucey, an adjunct professor of infectious diseases at Georgetown University Medical Center, says that the similarities between SARS-CoV-2
and its relatives SARS and MERS is a compelling argument that it might
have started out the same way.
“Now we have three coronaviruses that cause pneumonia and systemic illness and death,” he says. “Past is prologue.”
But, if the theory holds true, it’s not clear what that intermediary animal might have been for SARS-CoV-2. The WHO team analyzed samples from thousands of farmed animals across China, all of which tested negative for the virus. Lucey argues that the WHO team didn’t adequately test China’s farmed mink—one of the suspected intermediaries—but Rasmussen says the report itself acknowledges that it only scratches the surface.
“That’s a fraction of the animals that are farmed or captured or transported for this purpose in China,” she says. “I think we haven’t done anywhere near enough sampling.”

3. Introduction through refrigerated or frozen foods
WHO ASSESSMENT: possible
Another theory holds that the virus may have come to humans through
what’s known as the cold chain—the supply line for distributing frozen and refrigerated foods. In this scenario, the virus might have actually originated outside of China but was imported either on the surface of food packaging or
in the food itself.
This theory gained traction last summer after a couple of outbreaks in China, and there has since been some evidence suggesting that pathogens can survive longer in cold temperatures.
Still, while the cold chain might have played a role in new outbreaks, scientists say there’s little reason to believe that it was the source of the pandemic. There’s no direct evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for foodborne outbreaks, while Rasmussen notes that COVID-19 rarely spreads through surfaces—which was good news for those weary of wiping down their groceries.
“It’s not impossible,” she says. “You can’t rule it out. But I don’t think the evidence base is particularly strong for that.”
Rasmussen says a more plausible way that the virus might spread through the food chain would be through wildlife that’s farmed for human consumption. But, she points out, that bleeds over into the territory of the theory for an intermediate host.
Some critics claim that this theory is a red herring to push suspicion from China and onto other countries. Lucey considers this pathway the least likely
of the four the joint team identified, arguing it’s implausible that the virus would have stayed viable on the packaging for as long as it took to import from Europe or elsewhere. He also questions why these infections would have turned up in Wuhan and nowhere else.
“To me, it’s beyond far-fetched,” he says.

4. Laboratory leak
WHO ASSESSMENT: extremely unlikely
The most controversial hypothesis for the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is that
the virus leaked out of a laboratory in Wuhan where researchers study bat coronaviruses. Scientists point out that for now, the evidence both for and against the accidental lab leak hypothesis is thin, but past coronavirus epidemics such as SARS and MERS occurred naturally via zoonotic transmission.
There are two versions of the lab-leak idea: that a researcher was accidentally infected in the lab, or that researchers intentionally manipulated a coronavirus strain to create SARS-CoV-2. Researchers have roundly debunked the latter idea—that SARS-CoV-2 was manufactured—since genetic evidence shows that the virus arose naturally. The WHO focused on the possibility that the virus accidentally escaped from a lab in which wild samples were being studied.
Researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have sequenced the bat coronavirus strain—called CoV RaTG13, which is 96.2 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2, and its closest known relative—as part of their effort to prevent zoonotic viruses from spilling over to humans. A separate laboratory run by the Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention has also worked with bat coronaviruses.

Although there have been laboratory leaks in the past, the WHO report points out that they’re rare. According to the WHO report, there is no record that any Wuhan laboratory was working with a virus more closely related to SARS-CoV-2 before the first cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in December 2019, nor did any laboratory staff report any COVID-like symptoms suggesting that they had been infected.
On May 23, the Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. had raw intelligence saying three researchers from the Wuhan Institute of Virology had sought hospital care in November 2019, which may have informed claims made by the Trump administration’s State Department in January. However, the State Department also noted that the Wuhan researchers’ symptoms were “consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses.”
Speaking in April, when the WHO report was released, Lucey said he believes the theory is plausible, though less likely than zoonotic transmission, given the lack of evidence. He points out that there was no forensic investigation of the labs in Wuhan, and he questions why the WHO authorized the team to investigate the lab at all without the mandate to conduct such an investigation or team members with the subject-matter expertise to carry it out.

“There’s not really any way to prove or disprove the lab leak theory based on what’s been presented in this report,” Rasmussen agreed at the time, noting that to put the matter to rest there would need to be a forensic audit of lab records to look for the ancestral virus to SARS-COV-2. “But my opinion is that the lab leak theory, while not impossible, is less likely to be the explanation.”
Rasmussen explains that there’s no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is the result of genetic manipulation, nor is it likely that it could have been created by accident. It’s incredibly difficult to culture a virus that’s strong enough to cause human infections from a bat sample, she says. Meanwhile, similar viruses commonly occur in nature, making that the far likelier source.
Robertson says that supporters of the lab leak theory argue that SARS-CoV-2 has traveled too quickly and efficiently through the human population to be natural in origin. But if the virus is a generalist, as genomic studies show, he says it’s not surprising that it is so effective at infecting humans.

“I think the evidence is pretty good that it didn’t have to change much to be successful in humans,” he says. Although the WHO report may not have shed much light on the origins of SARS-CoV-2, Robertson says this is just the beginning of what can sometimes be a long process. But he says there’s a public health imperative now to launch more rigorous follow-up studies. “There’s a virus somewhere out there that’s very close to SARS-CoV-2,” he says. “That seems to be the bit that’s terrifying.”
Rasmussen says that the WHO report lays out a roadmap for further studies to discover the origins of the virus. It recommends better surveillance of captive and farmed animals to determine potential reservoir or intermediate hosts, as well as more sampling among bats—both in China and beyond, as there is also evidence of related coronaviruses circulating in regions such as Southeast Asia. The report also recommends in-depth epidemiological studies of the first COVID-19 cases.
Understanding how an outbreak got started helps scientists and governments pinpoint how to strengthen protections—whether that’s more rigorous surveillance for infections in animals and the food chain, or tighter biosafety protocols in laboratories.
“There’s a popular perception that we need some kind of justice or explanation, and somebody needs to answer for this pandemic,” Rasmussen says.
“But the real reason why we need to figure out the origin is so that it can inform our efforts to prevent another pandemic like this from happening.”

The U.S. is on track to meet President Biden’s goal of partly vaccinating 70%
of adults by July 4. But 30 states are unlikely to reach the national target,
and a handful may not get there before year’s end.

These 12 states have reached or surpassed 70 percent of adults: California, Maryland, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Vermont.
