Maybe it’s good this young woman finds out now that the University of her dreams is not what she thought. A prospective student eager to start her college career at Brigham Young University-Hawaii was accepted, then subsequently denied admission after submitting a medical exemption to forgo a required Covid-19 vaccination.
In posts uploaded to social media, Olivia Sandor explained after being accepted by BYU-Hawaii and learning of the school’s vaccine requirements on June 16, she was advised by doctors to apply for a Covid vaccine exemption due to a medical episode following a vaccine in 2019 that left her briefly paralyzed.
“…In February of 2019 I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Guillain-Barré is an auto-immune disease caused by vaccines which resulted in me being hospitalized and being paralyzed from the waist down,” Sandor wrote in an Instagram post, going on to explain she made a miraculous recovery.
“Having Guillain-Barré means I am not able to be vaccinated.
It could end in permanent paralysis, and possibly death if it spread up in my body.”
“With that being said, I reached out to BYU @ Hawaii and got with my doctors to submit an exemption form. BYU made this sound very accessible for those who had medical conditions and were in need of one. My family and I were all sure I would be granted one due to my condition.
After three weeks, I heard back from them.
My medical exemption was denied,” Sandor wrote. Sandor says she reached out to the university president, who eventually responded, saying the university would re-review the case with a medical panel. BYU Hawaii has once again denied me a medical exemption,” Sandor wrote on Monday.
“I am sharing this today because I know I’m not the only one going through this and this is something that is very important to talk about.” “There are people who cannot receive the covid-19 vaccine including me and we are being put to the side. This is not OK.”
“I have come to terms that I will not be attending BYU @ Hawaii in the fall, and that’s ok with me. But I don’t think that this is something that should go on for generations to come.”
The BYU-Hawaii website does show that students can apply for medical or religious vaccine exemptions, with the criteria being that a licensed physician “must state in writing that receiving a specific vaccine would endanger the individual’s life or health,” and that “The physician must state the length of time during which the vaccine would endanger the individual’s health or life.”
BYU-Hawaii staff did not respond to Info-wars’ repeated requests for comment as of writing.

Why have we in America just accepted the idea that requiring proof of vaccination in order to attend public events is a bad idea?
I have the right to show up in a large group of people and infect as many of them as possible, it’s in the Constitution, I promise. Don’t try to show me otherwise with facts, they are obviously fake. Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that proof of vaccination (or a negative test) would very soon be needed to access public events, restaurants, cinemas, stations & airports…!! Since then, more than 2.2 million vaccination appointments have been booked in less than 48 hours. As parents we impose guidelines and rules on our kids because we know better what keeps them safe. Seems some people grow up but need (want? like?) the continued firm but caring hand of parenting?

Are you serious with that? I grew up in a very rural area. Like voting proof: we had printers and drugstores and clinics and lots of other places where you could get a card. Schools, libraries, the list goes on. That’s such a weak argument, In Denmark we have an app.
It’s completely paperless. It’s required for inside dining, cinemas, museums etc. They don’t need a printer. You get a vaccination card. You can access it on your computer through most pharmacies, including Walmart which gives out a QR code to your Covid-19 vaccine record.
I don’t know. Bars check IDs, I have to show ID to get Sudafed or pain meds for my dog. What is the big deal?
I think it might help if the FDA formally approved the vaccine. Some people on the fence might finally get vaccinated, and it may be easier to start mandating the vaccine. In some states, anyway. Remove the excuse and magically comes the next. A chiropractor in my area requires a 30-day quarantine of any employee who has been exposed to anyone who has received a vaccination or who has been vaccinated.
Or even requiring service based biz to hire only vaccinated individuals. I live in a very small town and there are anti vaxxers here as well. Can’t tell you how many times some of the few restaurants have had to close temp bcoz employee tested +. I don’t want to patronize them. I haven’t, I want such proof to be mandatory. People would moan and whine but they would get vaccinated. I’m on board with showing paperwork for vaccination proof but also want the same for voting. I can see when looking at history why some people don’t want to show papers though. Sensitive issue.
Because it’s not a bad idea and that’s the way it should be done, great if you don’t want to get vaccinated. But you will not be able to mingle in a crowd of people and affect other people! Because we don’t understand that the right to put yourself at risk shouldn’t include the right to reckless endangerment of others. The number of people with guns who believe that their freedom to do whatever they want matters more than anyone else’s life, probably, for one thing. individual liberties end where other lives are at risk. Vaccination should be required by more and more places where humans congregate.
Americans have a very toxic interpretation of the word “freedom”….I understand the general objections to mandating vaccine passports are enforceable, but I think the WH and states were too quick to dismiss them as a tool to incentivize vaccines and to change behaviours. According to 30% of our country that is “communism” or “fascism”, or at least something they do not like. It is actually “common sense”, “the right thing to do”, and “patriotic”.
I bet you’ll see this happen when the vaccines get full FDA approval. Tough to mandate something that isn’t fully approved. One of the things that disturbs me about this is that it wasn’t the prevention of loss of life that spurred the increase but the selfishness of the thought of loss of things folks wanted to be able to do. Because the way vaccines were done, there’s no paper trail, no way to verify, and fake cards were being sold on Amazon within hours. We can’t vote without 1/3 of the country thinking it’s rife with fraud; there’s no way we could have credible vaccine “proof” after the fact.

I’m not sure where that 10 to 18% number comes from, since everything I’ve read, including your link, seems to indicate a smaller decrease. Still, so far the sites I’ve gone to seem to agree that these bisphosphonates can help reduce cancer recurrence in women post-menopause. I haven’t yet read much about side effects, so I don’t know if they present a significant enough risk to warrant not giving this treatment regularly.

Aaron Judge is one of the Six Yankees currently in COVID-19 protocol, according to ESPN.
Judge, catcher Kyle Higashioka and infielder Gio Urshela are the position players in the protocol, per the report. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Thursday that pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes and Wandy Peralta tested positive for COVID-19 and that three other players had tests “pending.” The results of those pending tests are still unknown. The Yankees are one of the teams who have reached MLB’s 85-percent vaccination threshold, but not every player has been vaccinated.
Cashman said most, but not all, of the six players who either tested positive or might have tested positive, were vaccinated. The Yankees’ post-All-Star break opener against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night was postponed because of positive COVID-19 tests among vaccinated New York pitchers Jonathan Loaisiga, Nestor Cortes Jr. and Wandy Peralta. “It’s a fluid situation that could spread. It has spread to some degree,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “We have three positives and we have three pending tests that we’ve had rapid tests on. … We’ll wait now for the lab tests to come back, which I’m assuming is going to be positive, as well. So that would increase our number to six, but we’re not at six yet. We’re at three confirmed.”
Loaisiga went on the COVID-19 injured list Saturday, when the Yankees were in Houston, and he did not travel home with the team Sunday. Cortes and Peralta went on the COVID-19 IL on Thursday. Cashman said all three were fully vaccinated, as are most of the players on the team. Among the three, two received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and the other was either Pfizer or Moderna, according to Cashman.
“Those players are doing well thus far,” he said. “And that would speak again to the belief that those vaccinations are working and ultimately they’re to protect us from severe illness and/or death.” The three players awaiting lab results are in quarantine. Cashman would not say whether they include the Yankees’ All-Stars who were in Denver: Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and Aroldis Chapman.

There were 45 regular-season games postponed for virus-related reasons during last year’s pandemic-shortened season but just two were not made up, between St. Louis and Detroit. Yet by 1934, the paper money supply had expanded faster than the nation’s gold supply, so in order to prevent the nation’s gold supply from being drained, the U.S. decided to devalue the dollar—by 41 percent. Prior to 1934, an ounce of gold could be redeemed for just us$20.67, however after the revision, the U.S. government would only part with an ounce of gold in exchange for $35. In gold terms, anyone who had a U.S. savings account lost 41 percent of its value—overnight.

Yet under the Bretton Woods system there were still limits on how much paper money a country could create. Each country had to police its own currency or be forced into embarrassing devaluations. The U.S. itself was constrained from overprinting money because the dollar remained fully convertible into gold.
According to some estimates, so many paper dollars had been created that the nation’s gold supply only backed 22 percent of them. At the same time, French President Charles de Gaulle, recognizing that the dollar was losing value, had been exchanging his nation’s collection of U.S. dollars for American gold reserves. Seeing other nations following suit, U.S. President Richard Nixon closed the gold window in August 1971, no longer allowing foreigners to exchange their U.S. dollars for gold and thus ending the Bretton Woods agreement. From that point on, America’s dollar became fiat, not backed by tangible assets. As the Federal Reserve bank of Minneapolis says, the U.S. dollar is fiat and is valuable only as long as “[p]eople are willing to accept fiat money in exchange for the goods and services they sell”—and only as long as “they are confident it will be honored when they buy goods and services.”
Since people were already in the habit of accepting paper backed by gold, Americans hardly noticed when the U.S. greenback became backed by nothing more than faith—until it started affecting their pocketbooks. Loss of the dollar’s gold backing resulted in a U.S. dollar sell-off in which foreign nations dumped dollars on the open market. This in turn caused roaring inflation and gold to spike up into the $800-per-ounce range. After the frb jacked interest rates into the high teens, both Americans and foreigners decided they would trust the government and continued using the U.S. dollar. The U.S. now operates on what many refer to as the Bretton Woods 2 system. Although there is no formal central bank agreement (as was the case with Bretton Woods 1), many countries, especially those in Asia, have more or less informally pegged their currencies to the dollar. This system is inherently more unstable than the previous precious-metal-based non-fiat system. Since the U.S. dollar is no longer convertible to gold, there is no theoretical limit to how much the U.S. money base can expand— and the U.S. has been taking full advantage of this situation to increase its money supply. Nevertheless, as one well-known economics saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. America’s monetary expansion has been a primary driver behind the massive and continual erosion in the U.S. dollar’s purchasing power.
The Dollar’s Decline: During Alan Greenspan’s term at the FRB alone, America’s monetary base tripled and more new money came into being than under all previous Fed Chairman combined. As the government has massively increased the money supply—doubling it in the last seven years alone—those dollars have become less valuable. So many dollars have been created that only the dollar’s status as a reserve currency, along with the kindness of America’s trade partners, has prevented a complete dollar meltdown.

Whether it was Russians and Saudis selling oil to the world, or Chinese purchasing wheat from Canada, the dollar was the primary means of payment. Had foreign nations not needed to increase their holdings of dollars as world trade grew, there would have been a massive wave of homeless dollars roaming the world looking to be spent, and as the supply of dollars increased, the dollar’s value would have plummeted. Instead, over the years, America has been able to get away with creating the money needed to pay its bills and finance an otherwise unaffordable standard of living. However, the dollar’s status as a reserve currency is now being challenged. In 2005, the percentage of dollar-denominated reserves held by foreign nations was 76 percent. Now, not two years later, it is down to 65 percent. “[T]here is a gentle and osmotic process underway,” says economic analyst Julian D.W. Phillips: “a lessening of the role of the U.S. dollar in the global reserves” (Financial Sense Online, Nov. 6, 2006).
Former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan is also warning of possible protracted dollar dumping. “We’re beginning to see some move from the dollar to the euro, both from the private sector … but also from monetary authorities and central banks,” he said in October last year. Although an all-out revolt against the dollar hasn’t yet occurred, clear signals are emerging that the dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency of choice could be ending. Last year, Russia’s central bank, Sweden’s Riksbank, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar Central Bank and the Central Bank of Syria all announced intentions to diversify their reserves away from the greenback. Perhaps more worrisome is the fact that China and other Asian nations also have been hinting at diversifying out of their dollar reserve holdings. Australian Treasurer Peter Costello admonished central bankers in East Asia “to ‘telegraph’ their intentions to diversify out of American investments and ensure an orderly adjustment” (Sydney Morning Herald, Oct. 18, 2006). Over the past several years, Central banks in China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong have spent hundreds of billions purchasing American government bonds.
They have done so to support the dollar and help keep American consumers purchasing Asian-made products. If Mr. Costello is correct, however, “the strategy [has now] changed.” Recent trends suggest Asians are weaning themselves off American consumption. Consumer demand within China and Asia is growing, as is Asian trade with Europe. As the importance of Asian-American trade wanes, the incentive for Asians to support the dollar and to hold on to their massive dollar reserves is waning as well. America’s Asian creditors are up to their necks in U.S. dollars and may now be reaching the point where they no longer feel it is safe to hold so great a proportion of their foreign currency reserves in the dollar. “The exchange rate of the U.S. dollar, which is the major reserve currency, is going lower, increasing the depreciation risk for East Asian reserve assets,” warned the People’s Bank of China Deputy Governor Wu Xiaoling in November. The same month, the central bank’s governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, was quoted as saying that China has plans to diversify its assets into “many instruments,” presumably indicating a move away from the dollar.

China is estimated to hold approximately 70 percent of its $1 trillion of currency reserves in U.S. dollars. It certainly seems that Chinese central-bank officials are following Costello’s advice about being up front when they plan to sell their dollars. The question doesn’t seem to be whether the Asian banks will dump dollars—it is how orderly and significant the dollar devaluation will be.
America’s massive monetary expansion could be about to boomerang on itself, as it did in 1934 and 1971—only this time, the number of dollars involved absolutely dwarfs all previous currency crises. As the U.S. persistently destroys the value of the dollar by overprinting (or, more correctly, over-creating, since most money created is now digital), foreign nations are losing confidence in the dollar and its role as a reserve currency. Foreign central bank sales are the first waves of a coming dollar storm. The more that central banks dump dollars, the greater the loss of investor confidence in the dollar.

There’s no escaping it: Prices are rising across the board, including all the essentials — food, clothing and shelter. American home prices are up 20% over the past year. Prices of food eaten outside the home were up more than 4% in June over the past year, and apparel prices rose nearly 5% over the same time period.
At the start of the pandemic, factories shut down and car supply sharply declined. A year later, Covid-induced closures are still sending shock waves through the auto industry. Add in a global chip shortage inhibiting the production of new cars and buyers who are eager to buy cars, and you’ve got the perfect supply and demand storm to drive prices up.
In May, the average new car price hit a record $38,255, according to J.D. Power, up 12% from the same period a year ago. About two-thirds of car buyers paid within 5% of the sticker price in May, with some paying even more. With such short supply, car dealers are less likely to offer their usual deals this year, Matt Degen, an editor at Kelley Blue Book, told CNN Business.
“If you’re looking for a deal, sorry, but you’re probably not going to get one. In 2019 and in 2020, when car sales opened up, dealers were desperate to sell cars,” Degan said. “This year, because of the supply and demand problem, they don’t have to make deals because they’re going to sell [cars] even without those deals.” It’s not just the new car market that’s all out of whack.
A new Edmunds.com analysis for CNN Business showed that some one-year-old cars are selling for more now than when they were new. The average resell price is 95% of the original price, according to the analysis. Dealers don’t have enough cars to fill their lots and sell to buyers, and buyers aren’t seeing the options they want on dealers’ lots, so used cars are taking the place of new cars that just aren’t available right now.
So when is a good time to buy a car? Probably not anytime soon, according to Degan. “Our analysis is looking at possibly later this year, but it could go into next year. It all depends on supply chains,” Degan said.
Taking a weekend road trip
What if you want to take advantage of being vaccinated and head out on a weekend getaway?
Well, rental car prices are rising, too. Daily car rental rates have increased 86% compared to this time last year and 140% more than 2019, according to Julie Hall, a spokesperson for AAA. Blame supply chain disruptions for rental car price changes, too. At the start of the pandemic, rental car companies had to fight to stay afloat, renting cars for a fraction of their normal prices and selling off their fleets as used cars.
By the time people started getting vaccinated and traveling again, rental car companies’ inventories were significantly lower than pre-pandemic standards. To make matters worse, automakers are limiting the number of cars they’re selling to fleet customers like rental companies because of chip shortages. “If you’re planning to rent a car this summer, book early, remain flexible with timing and pick-up location as much as possible, and work with a travel agent,” Hall told CNN Business.
But let’s say you get lucky and find a rental car. Now you have to get gas.
Since the start of the year, the national gas price average has increased 40% from $2.25 on January 1 to $3.13, according to Hall. Don’t expect the record-breaking highs to stop anytime soon. Average gas prices are expected to rise to well over $3.25 by the end of the summer. AAA reported travel over the July 4 weekend that surpassed even pre-pandemic records. High demand for gas and low supply resulting from a shortage of truck drivers and oil will continue to drive prices up.
If you can get past the high price of a rental car and the cost of gas, you’ll need to figure out a hotel, too. Over the last four weeks, the average daily rate for hotels has hit $130.90, up from $95.37 over the same period last year, according to data from STR, a global hospitality data and analytics company. Even though prices are up since last year, in 2019, before the pandemic, average daily rates for this month were $132.99, a little higher than they are now.

If you still want to celebrate the return to ‘normalcy,’ hosting a party or gathering might be a good alternative. Be prepared to compromise on your wish list and shorten your guest list, though. The demand for events, such as weddings, corporate events and family gatherings, has skyrocketed in the past few weeks. Amid a shortage of supply and a shortage of labor, hosts and guests should lower their expectations and be ready to find other options, Heidi Hiller, creative director at Innovative Party Planning in Baltimore, Md. told CNN Business.
“It is affecting us big time,” Hiller said. “We’re well aware that people are coming in and asking us to design and produce an event that is within weeks of their request, but the product is not moving quickly. So that’s causing rush shipping charges, and rush everything charges, on top of the product already costing a little bit more.”
Now, many contracts have an “or equal substitute” exception because vendors can’t promise they will have enough product or labor to deliver a set amount of goods, Hiller said. The show must go on though, so vaccinated customers aren’t letting shortages or rising prices stop their plans to reunite with friends and family. To accommodate for cost and shortages, hosts are lowering guest counts and finding substitutes for what they initially wanted, according to Hiller.
“The expectations of guests are less, too, so it’s okay to not have everything you thought you were going to have if it’s going to cost too much and still have the party,” Hiller said. Even if you opt for a smaller gathering, sans party planner, you’ll probably still encounter higher prices. Let’s say you want to host a dinner party at a restaurant. The price for food away from home rose 0.7% in June.
If you’d rather stay in and host at your place, prices will probably be higher too. Prices of food at home increased 0.8% last month. Specifically, meats, poultry, fish and egg prices are to blame with a 2.5% increase. Regardless of food prices though, people still have to eat, so the best option is to try to substitute the most expensive goods when possible, Edward Yardeni, president of Yardeni Research, told CNN Business.
“I don’t see that having a party at home is different than having a meal at home. Whatever food you’re going to buy has gone up in price,” Yardeni said. One good substitute might be serving frankfurters, which decreased .6% in price last month, instead of other meats. Bakery products also got cheaper last month, so if you’re looking to serve dessert, you can at least find some reprieve there.
Food is more expensive no matter where it comes from, and there’s no way around that for the time being. If you’re looking to gather with friends and family, you’re going to spend more than you would have last year, and maybe more than you would have the year before, but after a year apart seeing your loved ones might be worth the extra costs.

The problem is that the more people that become dependent on the government, the fewer workers and income earners that pay taxes; the fewer entrepreneurs that generate jobs, and the greater demand for higher taxes from an ever decreasing tax paying group. This is the next step that goes back to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Social Security (perennially in financial trouble), Medicare and Medicaid (also perennially in financial trouble) and now we’re going to add 30 more million to the doll from the government.
In the 60’s this country was the country of promise. The country that told the immigrants who traveled to its shores: you work hard, you are productive and honorable and a good citizen, there are no limits to what you can do for you, your family and your new country. (AP) — A blaze that erupted near the flashpoint of the deadliest wildfire in recent U.S. history was heading away from homes on Thursday but survivors of the 2018 blaze in the town of Paradise worried that history could repeat itself. Residents of Doyle, a town of about 700 residents north of Reno, are evacuating from their homes again as extreme drought and heat waves leave the area primed for wildfires. California’s largest wildfire on record this year, the Beckwourth Complex Fire, whipped through Doyle on Saturday, destroying 33 homes according to the local fire department. Just eight months ago, Doyle suffered extensive damage when a wind-driven wildfire destroyed 21 homes and 19 other structures in November, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Why Middle America is resisting the Left’s culture war BY Quin Hillyer
If a village is besieged, it is those laying siege, not the villagers, who are the attackers. This is a point some of us on the center-right have been making for months, but it has now been eloquently expressed in the past 10 days by both top-notch Conservative Thinker Peggy Noonanand by thoughtful, veteran liberal writer Kevin Drum. Now, three items across my desk over the past weekend bolster the points made by Drum and Noonan.
Start with Drum’s honesty from the Left, which is most welcome. On July 3, he posted an essay called “If you hate the culture wars, blame liberals.” This is the same Drum who for years wrote for the uber-Left Mother Jones and pilloried the conservative case for religious exemptions from federal laws. But in his new essay, Drum presents copious data showing that “since roughly the year 2000, according to survey data, Democrats have moved significantly to the left on most hot button social issues while Republicans have moved only slightly right.”
This, of course, contradicts the dominant media narrative that conservatives are the ones who have moved more to the extremes, but the data is unassailable. As Drum puts it, “The Democratic Party has been pulled far enough left that even lots of non-crazy people find us just plain scary.” Note the “us.” Drum likes the leftward march but still recognizes that the march has far outstripped Middle America’s approval. In“The Culture War is a leftist offensive,” Noonan agrees that “the cultural provocations that are currently tearing us apart do, certainly and obviously, come from progressives. And the left seems to have no prudent fear of backlash. They don’t seem to believe public opinion counts for much anymore.” Examples of this trend — things that just a few years ago even most of the media would have thought of as not just abnormal but offensive — pop up almost every day. The New York Times, for example, published on July 7 what can only be called a glowing profile of an “educator” named Justine Ang Fonte, who teaches high school children about “porn literacy” and teaches first graders that it is “OK” to “touch” their private parts for pleasure. No amount of New York Times issue-fogging can hide the reality that most decent people think this stuff is beyond the pale. Separately comes word that a new policy in Chicago schools will make free condoms available to all students starting in fifth grade. Oh, don’t worry, says a spokesman for the Chicago Women’s Health Center, which helped create the program: “I want to be really clear that the existence of condoms does not mean that all students are going to be using those condoms or encouraged to use them.” That’s like handing out free cookies and then saying, “Don’t eat them.” Judging from the furious online reactions, it’s pretty clear that the schools are using the wrong definition of “loco” when trying to serve in loco parentis, because this just seems crazy. Finally, of course, there is the controversy over teaching critical race theory, with leftists saying both that it isn’t really taught and that it’s not a bad thing anyway. To which, leading critical race theory critic Chris Rufo released a list last Friday of at least 30 school districts in 15 states teaching a book positing that “whiteness” is an aspect of, yes, the devil, who leads white children astray with “stolen land” and “stolen riches.” At the risk of begging the question, if these examples don’t immediately strike you as highly objectionable, no amount of persuasion will change your mind. Yet, even for those who agree with this cultural direction. Any reasonable assessment would admit that the provocation, the “war,” is being waged from the Left, and that resistance to these initiatives is a largely defensive effort. It’s time for the Left to call a pause and to start attempting persuasion rather than coercion. Right now, As Noonan says,

An accused Capitol rioter said she doesn’t need a lawyer because she is a “self-governed individual.” Prosecutors say Pauline Bauer said she wanted to hang Nancy Pelosi while inside the Capitol on January 6. A Pennsylvania pizzeria owner arrested and charged in connection to the January 6 Capitol attack, demanded the removal of “any and all” defense attorneys on her behalf, arguing that she is a divine entity immune from the court’s laws. Prosecutors say Pauline Bauer, was among the hundreds of pro-Trump protesters who broke into the US Capitol on January 6 in an attempt to halt the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency. Bauer attempted to organize mass transportation to bus people to DC for the Trump rally that preceded the attack, and once inside the building, she told police she wanted to kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, court documents say. “Bring Nancy Pelosi out here right now,” Bauer can be heard saying on body-worn camera footage from inside the Capitol rotunda, according to prosecutors. “We want to hang that f—ing b—-.”
Now, in a series of bizarre court filings made late last month, Bauer is insisting on representing herself and is claiming to have special legal privileges as a “self-governed individual.” A court-appointed lawyer for Bauer did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. In a Zoom court appearance on June 11, Bauer told the judge she was attending “by special divine appearance,” according to The Daily Beast. “I do not stand under the law,” Bauer said, according to the outlet. “Under Genesis 1, God gave man dominion over law.” Bauer was later removed from that video proceeding “due to her inability to show qualm and decency to the Court,” records show. She was ordered to appear again in-person later that month. But at a June 21 hearing, Bauer refused to accept the conditions of her release and was jailed overnight as a result, according to court documents. She was later released on personal recognizance after verbally agreeing to the required pretrial release conditions.

Alexander Hinton, a renowned expert on genocide, explains how politics, structural racism, the promotion of American exceptionalism, and a belief that the US has achieved a color-blind society have diverted attention from the deep roots of white supremacist violence in the US’s brutal past. Drawing on his years of research and teaching on mass violence, Hinton details the warning signs of impending genocide and atrocity crimes, the tools used by ideologues to fan the flames of hate, and the shocking ways in which “us” versus “them” violence is supported by inherently racist institutions and policies.
Even the title of Hinton’s new book provides a chilling summary of the current danger facing this nation: “It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the U.S.” Hinton is one of the world’s leading authorities on genocide and atrocity crimes. He is the author of 12 books on the subject and directs the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights at Rutgers University. He testified as an expert witness, at the trial of Nuon Chea, who was prime minister of Cambodia during the genocidal tyranny of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. With sober analysis and in assiduous detail, Hinton explores the ways the United States is “simmering at a low boil,” and evinces every risk indicator for widespread mass atrocity crimes. White supremacist organizations and armed militias are mobilized for political action, the Republican Party has declared war on multiracial democracy and right-wing voters have become increasingly radical and hostile, falling into the personality cult of Donald Trump and the apocalyptic cult of QAnon. As historian Timothy Snyder, philosopher Jason Stanley and former Republican insider Mike Lofgren have also warned, the U.S. is teetering at the edge of fascism. With “It Can Happen Here,” Hinton brings his knowledge and experience to bear on a dynamic history of the Trump administration — taking his readers inside his classroom, to white power rallies and to his own testimony at the Chea trial. One of the book’s strengths is its accessibility. Written with literary style rather than in dry academic prose, it makes for fascinating, albeit deeply disturbing, reading. Alarming but never alarmist, Hinton provides a chilling introduction to genocide studies through a chronicle of his travails during the Trump years. The echoes of historical genocide are impossible to miss in contemporary American politics. Most Americans undoubtedly prefer to think of the United States as immune to the forces of history, and above the various forms of political violence and societal collapse that have affected every populated continent on the planet at one time or another. Hinton is here to tell us that kind of passivity and apathy is all too likely to create the conditions for historic catastrophe. I recently interviewed Hinton by phone. This transcript has been edited for length and clarity. You gave your book the title, “It Can Happen Here.” You are, of course, playing off Sinclair Lewis’ classic novel, “It Can’t Happen Here.” Like Lewis, you are combating the illusion of American exceptionalism, the idea that freedom, democracy and progress toward equality are almost like laws of nature. In fact, you make the argument that “it” has already happened here. Can you explain how the belief that “it can’t happen here” is historically wrong? I think of two contextual blockages that prevent us from grappling with our past, and the present that is informed by it. One is what you just named, “American exceptionalism,” the “not us” idea. You know, “this is America and it can’t happen here.” We get this over and over again. The corollary to that is “not me.” That’s the idea, “Oh, it’s a bunch of crazy racists over there. I have nothing to do with that.” From “not me,” we get the “bad apples” idea. I spend a lot of time in the book addressing the fallacy of “bad apples” and “the hater” — the isolated villain. The danger of these concepts is that if we allow people to believe that “not us” and “not me,” they will soon think, “Well, then it’s not my problem.” To the second part of your question, that was how the project began. I was testifying in the trial of Nuon Chea right as Trump was riding into power. Many people were making analogies between Trump and genocidal leaders. As someone who studies these things, I am always wary of direct historical analogies. I think of them more as echoes, or patterns that take place, and we can look for a manifestation. For example, if we look at the history of fascist ultra-nationalism, there are many echoes with the Trump administration. I started noting the echoes, and then we got to Charlottesville. That was when I felt it was necessary to take it on, and bring to bear an analysis of the risk and danger of mass violence. That begins with a long journey through the specific lens of genocide studies, and a genocide-driven revisionist look at the United States, which leads us through settler colonialism and the connection between the need for land and need for labor, which sets everything in motion. I also teach about atrocity crimes. We’re talking about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Indian Exclusion Act, what happens when we push Native Americans further and further west and, of course, systemic white supremacy. Oddly, now the latter is being pushed through the frame of “critical race theory.” I don’t use that language, but I’m certainly familiar with the literature. When I began writing the book, few people were having these conversations, and now they are commonplace. The speed with which the discourse has changed is remarkable. When it comes to the writing itself, you made an interesting choice. Rather than writing this book as an academic treatise, you use literary techniques to establish a chronicle, taking us inside your classroom as your students also react to the events such as Charlottesville. You take us to your testimony, and even attend a white power rally, reporting on it almost as a journalist.
Why did you decide to approach the book that way? I was trained to do academic writing, but over time, I grew increasingly dissatisfied with that form of writing. With this particular book, however, it wasn’t so much a pre-planned strategy as much as it emerged out of the context of what I was writing about. I wanted to directly confront the issues, in one sense. The classroom was an effective setting, because what is teaching about, if not critical thinking and searching for the truth? Here we are in the midst of a time when the very basis of truth is called into question, which is another echo of genocide studies, especially if you think about Holocaust denial. Also, with the students I am teaching at Rutgers, this is their lived reality. Most of them are Black and brown, and the events of the Trump years were having a powerful effect on them. That was another aspect that made me think I should take the readers into the classroom. I also wanted to write a ground-level history of the Trump administration, while we were facing the risk of atrocity crimes. Little did I know that it would get even worse, because I finished the book before Jan. 6. So I wanted to capture what it was like to live in the middle of this heightened crisis, and not from the White House or another institution of power, as most history is told, but at the ground level. Through reporting on the classroom and my students, I could also write an accessible history of white power mass atrocities in the United States, and that became the narrative thread. My goal was to write a book that could actually be used by high school students in genocide education. To write with narrative engagement and clarity makes it more accessible to that audience. Many states, including mine, which is New Jersey, mandate some Holocaust or genocide studies. The chapter I write on the Charlottesville teach-in, for example, could be pulled out and used in a high school classroom. Yes, you consistently make excellent use of Theodor Adorno’s admonition: “The premier demand upon all education is that Auschwitz not happen again.” You’re attempting to rise to that challenge, bringing your analytical apparatus to bear on the Trump administration and the radical right-wing movement within the United States, offering your expertise as a genocide scholar and anthropologist. The ultimate question, then, is about the current threat of the United States descending into mass atrocity crimes. How do you assess that, and on what do you base that assessment? The United Nations has a good means of risk assessment, using a few key clusters of risk indicators. One factor is a history of mass atrocities. Well, that hasn’t gone away. That’s always there. If you think about it as a kettle on a stove, there’s always a little bit of heat with that risk factor. Another risk factor is “upheaval,” and before I get into that, because it is really important, you have these other things that the UN calls “buffers.” Well, Trump eroded the buffers throughout his administration. You can read about what he did to the Justice Department, and how he marginalized anyone who tried to push back on him. Many democratic practices and norms, which we thought were really strong in the United States, were quickly eroded. Then, you have “catalyst.” OK, guns. The U.S. is awash in guns, and we have armed groups becoming more active throughout the country. Now, back to “upheaval.” We had a pandemic. Then you bring in economic collapse. Then you bring in presidential incitement of militias and armed groups. Then you bring in increasing polarization. We have this incredible mix of factors. The book finishes in July 2020, and to return to the kettle on the stove, we were at a high boil at that point. I wrote an op-ed around that time, headlined, “Trump’s Helter Skelter,” warning that we were in a really high-risk situation. Other experts began issuing the same warning. If we look at Jan. 6, it is almost remarkable that there wasn’t a lot more violence. If there had been, it would have sparked more violence across the country. Also, if we didn’t have Jan. 6, and Trump was still on Twitter and social media platforms — he’s a master at using these mediums — we would have gone right up to the inauguration with Trump potentially inciting mobs and hate groups, and who knows what would have happened? Trump losing Twitter was a defusing of the situation. So, moving forward, Biden comes in. We have a strengthening of the buffers, the pandemic is improving and the economy is improving. That takes things down from the rapid simmer, but what is worse is the lingering polarization and the belief that Biden is illegitimate. This overlaps with the GOP now having white grievance as its default issue.We have the high-alert danger posed by extremist groups — white power groups, militias. Now, let’s imagine that Trump gets access to Twitter, or another dynamic social media platform and things can move in a very dangerous direction, very quickly. On the subject of buffers, the Republican Party, along with its right-wing media, are waging a war on electoral politics an rightfully so. Of course. That’s incredibly dangerous, and you have the potential for counter protesters directly confronting white power extremists. We have gone from Charlottesville, which was a collection of small extremist organizations gathering together, with the militias claiming they were there only to keep order, and then we move to Trump announcing, “Stand by, Proud Boys.” With that comment, the militias are highly agitated and mobilized, and move from “keeping order,” or so they claimed, to becoming directly active. You also have white Christian fundamentalists, which we saw clearly during the January insurrection, agitated and mobilized. You also have the “Stop the Steal” people very upset and feeling increasingly desperate. Then, we have Q’Anon, which went from barely existent at the time of Charlottesville to a movement of millions strong. To add one more piece, we have this long documentary record showing that, among the general public, 10 to 15 percent have white supremacist sympathies. That’s a lot of people. Then, we have Fox News increasingly taking the white nationalist line in their broadcast. Even today, CNN and MSNBC are talking about COVID-19, and Fox is talking about Black and brown crime in the inner cities, and the “invasion” of immigrants that everyone should fear. In January 2021, the risk was really high. It has subsided with the Biden administration, but we are still at a low boil. It’s not a good place to be. How crucial was it that Trump, using the bully pulpit of the presidency and with the full support of the Republican Party, provided encouragement to these hate groups? It seems to have functioned in two ways. It strengthened them. But also it ushered them into the mainstream of right-wing politics, and allowed average Republican voters to excuse or even embrace them. Robert Pape, one of the country’s leading researchers on terrorism, found that most of the participants in the insurrection of Jan. 6 were not connected to hate groups. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. At the time of Charlottesville, it is a small group of extremists. They are savvy on social media, but appear as if they are on the fringe. By the time we get to January of 2021, the white nationalist movement is millions and millions strong. So what was a shock to some people, when you look at Pape’s study, was not a surprise, because it had been a trend for a long time. The swelling of support for Trump has not gone away. Perhaps it has dissipated at the edges, but it is still tens of millions of people who are enraged, and that includes far-right extremists, but also QAnon, which is a lot of things, but a key piece is “Deep State,” globalists, antisemitic tropes. So QAnon can have synergy with far-right movements, and it is massive. Think back to Sinclair Lewis. He looked around in the 1930s, and he saw that millions of people were listening to Father Charles Coughlin. There were the Silver Shirts, which were the U.S. equivalent of Brownshirts.
If we look around now, it is very similar to what Lewis saw. We are in a different cycle, but one that is highly volatile. If Trump can return to a dynamic social media platform, or if his former campaign strategist, Jason Miller, can succeed with the social media platform that he has created, that is the ingredient that can escalate the crisis. Returning for a moment to Trump, Fox News and the “white nationalist line,” you make Trump’s appropriation of the snake parable central to “It Can Happen Here,” even placing that image on the cover of the book. It tells the story of a woman who accepts a wounded snake with “colored skin” into her home, nurtures it to health, only to have it kill her with a venomous bite. As she is dying, the snake mocks her: “You knew I was a snake when you took me in.” Trump recites this story to audiences at nearly every rally. Why do you view this story as pivotal to understanding Trump, the white power movement and right-wing politics more broadly? It embodies the idea of “white genocide.” It embodies the idea of Black and brown invaders. Before Trump would recite it, he would frame it as saying, “I’m talking about immigration.” In the 2016 cycle through his presidency, this is a clear metaphor of “white genocide” invasion. The snake traverses the domestic boundary of the home, manipulates the innocent woman, who symbolizes white purity. There is a big trope in white-power discourse that is very patriarchal, with white women in need of protection by white men from the dangers of other races. So, in the story, the woman is bitten and dies. The Black and brown invaders kill whiteness, according to the metaphor. Trump recited the snake parable the same day that I testified in the Nuon Chea trial, and this is the exact same language that he used, and that authoritarian leaders, demagogues and hate leaders use, about external enemies threatening the body politic. There are notions of contamination, and that the body politic will be destroyed if they don’t take extreme action. I was stunned to learn that the Khmer Rouge discussed nearly the same story, about a crocodile. Yes, the crocodile, which was the metaphor for the Vietnamese. Also linked to Trump, and common in these regimes, is language of “enemies lurking within.” If you remember, former Sen. Jeff Flake, Republican from Arizona, to his credit, took to the Senate floor to point out that Hitler, Stalin and Mao all derided journalists and critics as “enemies of the people.” Donald Trump, as president of the United States, did the exact same thing. There is also an antisemitic thread that runs through all this, because Jewish allies of Black and brown people are often the “enemies of the people.” In terms of the snake, there are many depictions in white power literature of the Jewish people as snakes. A big part of Trump’s constituency is Christian fundamentalists, and of course in the Bible the snake is representative of Satan. So the snake has many different valences. This is why the book begins with the snake, but ends with Toni Morrison’s bird. Morrison tells the story in her Nobel Prize address of an old, blind woman confronted by young men. One of them taunts her by saying, “I hold in my hand a bird. Tell me whether it is living or dead.” The woman takes a long pause, and then answers, “It is in your hands.” Morrison explains that the blind woman “shifts attention away from assertions of power to the instrument through which that power is exercised.” Rather than distilling everything down to the snake point of view, which is overwhelming, hegemonic terms of power, we have to listen to multiple voices, and consider multiple possibilities.
