Dr. Stella Immanuel, who is also a Christian pastor, gave a speech on the steps of the US Supreme Court in Washington, captured in a video first published by right-wing website Breitbart on Monday. Along with other medics from a group called America’s Frontline Doctors, she said that Americans were being denied a potential cure for Covid-19.

“Nobody needs to get sick. This virus has a cure – it is called hydroxychloroquine, I have treated over 350 patients and not had one death,” said Dr. Immanuel. Despite some early studies raising hopes that the drug could be used to cure coronavirus, one subsequent larger scale trial has shown it is not effective as a treatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has halted its trials, saying it doesn’t reduce death rates in patients with coronavirus. After Facebook took down the America’s Frontline Doctors’ video on Tuesday, she declared that Jesus Christ would destroy the social media giant’s servers if her videos were not restored to the platform. Facebook has not reported an interruption on its services.

Arlen, at the age of eleven,[3] developed two rare conditions known as transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. This was an extremely rare scenario, and Victoria quickly lost the ability to speak, eat, walk, and move. She slipped into a vegetative state in which recovery was unlikely. Arlen spent nearly four years “locked” inside her own body, completely aware of what was going on, just unable to move or communicate. Doctors believed there was little hope of survival, and recovery was unlikely.[4]

I was told it couldn’t be done. My dream was impossible. But on March 3, 2016, after spending 10 years in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down, I took my first steps without assistance. That was no easy task. But first, let me take a step back.

When I was 11, I got sick. My back and side ached, so doctors took out my appendix.
Then my legs began giving out. My foot dragged. Within two weeks, I lost all feeling and function in my legs. Next, my hands stopped working. Two years later, I woke up inside a body that could not move. I was locked in.
I could hear the conversations going on around me, but I had no way of alerting anyone that I was aware they were there.

It took three years for doctors to diagnose me with two equally rare conditions:
Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, autoimmune disorders that caused swelling in my brain and spinal cord. I’ve since learned that, had my doctors diagnosed me correctly in 2006, a steroid injection could have prevented all of this. But at the time of my diagnosis, they offered my family little hope. They told them I would be a vegetable for the rest of my life. I heard those conversations.

But my parents believed in me. They set up a hospital room in our house in New Hampshire, and took care of me. My three brothers — I’m a triplet and we have an older brother — talked to me and kept me in the know about what was going on outside of my room. They empowered me to fight and get stronger. They didn’t know I could hear them, but I could.

Then, in December 2009, I made eye contact with my mom. Slowly over the next year, I began coming back to life. Raw sounds became words, became sentences. A twitch of my index finger became the wave of my hand. The ability to swallow pudding eventually led to me mowing on a steak. I learned the name Justin Bieber, held my first cell phone and learned what it meant to “poke” someone on Facebook. But despite daily progress, one thing never returned: my legs. I was told the swelling had caused permanent damage to my spinal cord and I would be paralyzed from my belly button down for the rest of my life. Every specialist told me the same thing: “You need to get used to being in a wheelchair.”

I’d already overcome the impossible. I’d woken up and re-learned to live.
My idea of what is possible had changed. When my doctors said I would never walk, I didn’t believe them. I knew I wasn’t meant to spend my life in a chair.

Although I believed I would walk again, I knew it would be a long,
difficult road littered with challenges I couldn’t foresee. I remember coming home from high school one day crushed because kids were bullying me because of my chair. I had been so happy to return to school and after that day, I didn’t want to go back. As my crying subsided, my parents promised they would do whatever it took to help me to walk again. They kept that promise. They never lost hope.

At some points, hope was the only thing I had. When I began my journey toward walking again, I clung to hope like a life raft. There is a Helen Keller quote that I saved in a journal I’ve kept along this journey. “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” I had hope; I was still working on confidence.

Growing up, I was a water baby. We lived near a lake, had a pool in our backyard and as soon as I was old enough, I joined a swim team. By 10, I was winning local events. As I began to heal from my illness, I came to the sad realization that I would never swim again. I didn’t think I could swim without my legs. But my brothers disagreed, so in 2010 they threw me into our pool. I was terrified. But it was a turning point in my life. It was the “jump” I needed to get back to my life. When I was swimming, I was free from the chair. And to my surprise, I was still good. In the water, I found freedom — and my confidence.

In 2012, at 17, I made the USA Paralympic swim team and competed at the London Games. I brought home three silver medals and a gold in the 100-meter freestyle. I set a world record in the 100-meter free. When I returned home, I was met with quite a bit of fanfare. All of a sudden, my chair and
I were thrust into the spotlight. I was invited to speaking engagements and appearances. People recognized me at the grocery store. I began telling my story to television reporters and newspaper writers, becoming a beacon of hope to so many around the world. But I never lost my hope and vision for getting out of that chair.

This was a truly life-changing moment. Two years after waking up from a four-year vegetative state, I achieved the impossible and won a gold medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London. As I pushed toward my goal of walking, I found the hope I needed at Project Walk, a paralysis recovery center based in San Diego. Through the Dardzinski Method, an activity-based therapy, Project Walk has helped many people dealing with paralysis
to regain function and even walk.

My mother and I temporarily relocated to San Diego and lived with family
so I could train every day. We realized this was the place that could help me, but we didn’t want to live hundreds of miles away from my brothers and dad. So, keeping their promise, my family decided to open the first Project Walk franchise on the East Coast. This way, I could train every day and achieve my goal, while others in my hometown could regain the hope they needed, as well. In 2013, my mother had asked one of my specialists what the possibility was of me ever walking again.

He told her, “I wouldn’t mortgage the house.” Well, my parents mortgaged our house and in 2015, they opened Project Walk Boston. It became my refuge. Despite agonizing frustration, I put in everything I had every day, spending thousands of hours working and fighting for one flicker of a sign that my legs were still alive. For the longest time, I didn’t see even a twitch of movement below my level of injury. Then, on Nov. 11, 2015, I took a small step. I was strapped into a harness above a treadmill and two trainers worked to move my legs. It had been six years since I “woke up” and my legs had shown no life.

Most doctors say if there is no improvement after two years, there will be
no improvement. Still, I showed up every day, for up to six hours a day, and worked. That day, one of my trainers noticed a flicker, a small movement
from within my right leg. It wasn’t much, but it was all the hope I needed. I harnessed that flicker and fanned the flame. Slowly, I began regaining movement in my legs. As they became stronger, I began sitting less and walking with the aid of forearm crutches and leg braces more frequently.

Five months later, on March 3, 2016, I let go of the crutches and put one foot in front of the other. I haven’t stopped since. I sometimes feel like the Will Ferrell character Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights. Without my chair, “I don’t know what to do with my hands. “Project Walk in San Diego … where it all began. This photo was taken in October 2013 and I couldn’t even initiate a twitch in my leg at the time. It took two trainers working tirelessly to help me try and initiate steps.

That’s not to say every day is perfect. Walking is still challenging and I still have significant impairment. I wear leg braces, follow a training program for two-to-three hours per day and on the days when my legs feel more paralyzed, I have my chair or crutches on standby. But my struggle is now less visible. Only my trainers, those closest to me and I know the extent of the damage and the effort it takes for me to continue to progress each day.

Only they see the thousands of hours of training, 15 different pairs of leg braces, three wheelchairs and all the blood, sweat and tears. Sometimes my recovery and the regimen I have to keep feels like a second job. But it’s all worth it. It’s been 10 years since I was able to look someone in the eye instead of staring at everyone’s butts all day.

Without the chair, there is no obvious evidence of my journey, no wheelchair or pink crutches to explain the past 10 years. They were such a reminder of what had happened to me that with them; I never felt I could truly move on or be free. But standing was scary, too.
I was incredibly nervous about announcing this news. I was unsure how people would react to me. But then I realized this is my journey and nobody else’s and maybe it can give hope to people who need it most.

Nearly one year into the pandemic, Covid-19 is spreading at record high rates in the United States, and with it, new variants of the virus are emerging. Last week, researchers in Ohio said they identified two unique variants in Columbus. Experts agree that it’s not surprising that new variants have emerged in the U.S., but stress that the virus’s unchecked transmission in the country provides ample opportunities for it to mutate. The best way, therefore, to crack down on new variants is to stop the spread, they say.
“The only way to [stop emergence of new variants] is to stop the spread of the virus,” said Ben Bimber, a research professor at Oregon Health and Science University.
“Every time the virus replicates, it’s an opportunity to mutate,” he said. “If there’s more people infected, there’s simply more virus out there and it has more opportunities to mutate.”

When the coronavirus infects an individual, it enters the cells and makes copies of itself. “Every time the virus copies itself, there’s a chance to introduce errors,” Bimber said. “If the virus is replicating in people, it will slowly accumulate mutations.” Oftentimes, these errors, or mutations, are meaningless. But in some cases, they may give the virus a survival advantage — making it more contagious, for example, or more resistant to treatments or vaccines. On the other hand, some mutations can render the virus weaker.
It’s unclear how the two variants recently identified in Ohio will affect how the virus behaves. The findings on those variants were posted last Friday on the online preprint server BioRxiv, meaning they have not yet been peer-reviewed. In the study, the researchers analyzed the genetic sequences of more than 220 coronavirus samples obtained in the Columbus area from April 2020 through early January 2021.

Chan School of Public Health, said he was not surprised by the detection of new variants, particularly the one with the N501Y mutation, “because of the fact that it’s happened so many times.” In addition to emerging in the U.K. and South Africa, that particular mutation has also been detected in Brazil.
The other variant contained a combination of three mutations that haven’t been observed together before, the researchers said. While the N501Y mutation was only found in one sample, this variant, with three mutations, quickly became predominant in the samples the researchers tested in December and January.
Jones told NBC News that vaccination is key to both stop the spread of variants, as well as reduce the odds of new variants emerging. “The larger your pool of [susceptible] patients, the more possibility for a mutation to survive and emerge,” he said. “It has to pass from person to person, so if you’re not getting a lot of infection in the population [because of vaccination], then even an important mutation may just peter out, because the person who was infected doesn’t transmit the virus to anyone else.”

Even “having an optimally fit, pathogenic change in the virus doesn’t do any good if it keeps meeting a wall of vaccinated people,” Jones added.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is “aware” of the Ohio variants, and issued the same statement it gave on Jan. 8, following a controversial report from
the White House Coronavirus Task Force that speculated that a U.S. variant might be driving the recent surge in cases in the country.
That statement said that while “it is highly likely there are many variants evolving simultaneously across the globe,” the CDC has “not seen the emergence of a particular variant in the United States as has been seen with the emergence of B.1.1.7 in the United Kingdom or B.1.351 in South Africa.”
However, the statement noted “there is a strong possibility there are variants in
the United States; however, it could take weeks or months to identify if there is a single variant of the virus that causes Covid-19 fueling the surge in the United States similar to the surge in the United Kingdom.” New variants are expected and not all are a cause for concern, said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Georgetown University Center for Global Health Science and Security.

“We should worry when a variant is accompanied by epidemiologic evidence such as observed in the U.K.” — she said, referring to the surge in cases seen as that country’s variant grew more widespread — “or if there’s a significant association with increased disease severity.” But “regardless of emergent variants, we must emphasize reducing transmission of all variants,” Rasmussen said. That means wearing a mask,
avoiding crowds and practicing good hand hygiene.

So what does that mean?
Build back better is a World Economic Forum plan to “reinvent capitalism” so that companies are more focused on the greater good, not profits, according to the WEF’s own statements. How to accomplish that? By the “great reset.” Again, that’s according to the WEF’s own words. “Now is the time for a ‘great reset’ of capitalism,” the WEF wrote in June.
“A true recovery from COVID-19 will not be about putting things back together the way they were: we need to ‘build back better,’ to ‘reset,’ if we are to address the deep systemic vulnerabilities the pandemic has exposed,” the WEF wrote in July. “To improve the state of the world, the World Economic Forum is starting The Great Reset Initiative,” the WEF wrote in September. For the communist party. This is where the actionable changes occur.

This is where the talk turns to walk.
In December, the WEF launched a new initiative called the “Davos Manifesto.” 
It posed the question, “What kind of capitalism do we want?” And it answered by laying out three possibilities — “shareholder capitalism,” “state capitalism,” & “stakeholder capitalism.” In short, shareholder is true capitalism; it’s the kind where companies are in it to make money, where corporations are driven by profit and loss statements. It’s the kind that’s chugged America’s economy to the top of the world, for decades running.
State-run capitalism is not really capitalism at all because it places the government in charge of directing the economy. It’s the kind of “capitalism” that’s “risen to prominence in many emerging markets, not least China,” WEF wrote. Stakeholder capitalism is the emerging beast. “[It] positions private corporations as trustees of society, and is clearly the best response to today’s social and environmental challenges,” WEF wrote.

It’s the kind of capitalism that says corporations shouldn’t be concerned simply with making a buck, but also serving as a “social organism” to society. Companies, in other words, should be motivated more by do-goodism than money. It’s really the way the left gets its hands on Wall Street to drive forth policies, politics and agendas that don’t pass the smell test of Congress and the people. The Senate won’t ratify a U.N. climate change treaty? No worries; politicians will just pressure private businesses to “voluntarily” adopt clean energy standards and sustainable development practices instead. 

The end game is essentially the same. Congress won’t pass so-called common sense gun controls? No worries; new “great reset” standards will ensure private companies restrict firearms’ sales, and banks restrict funds to companies selling firearms, and businesses boot all gun-carriers from their businesses. Second Amendment, whoosh. Gone.
The possibilities for control are endless.
“We should seize this moment to ensure that stakeholder capitalism remains the new dominant model,” WEF wrote. “[Our] new ‘Davos Manifesto’ …  states that companies should pay their fair share of taxes, show zero tolerance for corruption, uphold human rights throughout their global supply chains and advocate for a competitive level playing field. Companies will need new metrics. For starters, a new measure of ‘shared value creation’ should include ‘environmental, social and governance’ (ESG) goals a complement to standard financial metrics.”
Banking and business bigwigs have already swung into gear to fine-tune these new “shared value” metrics. The U.S. Business Roundtable just announced it was embracing this “great reset” form of capitalism. Where it leads is here: Corporations will become the world’s policy guides. Corporate elites will take over where governments now serve.

Throwing money at a problem without finding the root cause of it is foolhardy:
There is no saving this planet until we get our population under control. The Earth cannot even support 8 billion people now, much less 11 billion by 2100. We are a plague that is overrunning the planet, making extinct every other creature. Then, we will be next. Capitalism and it’s demand for constant growth is the problem. Just look at the carbon footprints of any Western countries citizens compared to the global south.

Population is only part of the problem and it’s unhelpful to prioritize it like this.
But the biggest polluter to their planet is China. Some people talk about planting trees,
which would make the single greatest impact on planet warming, area rainfall modification, stream bank stabilization and carbon sequestration. Especially in terms of safety and results for lowest price. But there’s a problem with planting trees as a climate solution.

It takes a minimum of 20 years for a tree to start maximum absorption. It’s simply not fast enough.Yes it helps a fraction but it’s mainly an exercise in making people feel good. Liberals would like to see the government handout of 273.6 million vehicles cost $11 trillion dollars. And only 500,000 charging stations you would have a 30 minute wait per charge. 547 vehicles per charging station with 11 days waiting to get your car recharged. That would be a 127 terawatt electricity consumption per year currently 3.9 terawatt total US electricity consumption 2019.

With India, China and Brazil, as the biggest polluters and aren’t willing to change a thing.
So it’s not going to work. Last summer China saw the sky for the first time, due to the pandemic. It has been over 25 years since they have seen the clear skies. What does that tell you? Waste of $$$$ and it is premature to conclude with high confidence that increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations from human activities have had a detectable impact on Atlantic basin hurricane activity.”

People can’t think about the survival of our species if all they can think about is the survival of their families. Tackling the climate crisis requires not just reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also increasing economic security in a guaranteed way.

Invest in indoor/vertical farms so cities can grow their food locally, reducing shipping (costs and emissions). Global Warming

Let me address these 2 statements: 1) One has nothing to do with the other 2) Viruses and weather do not target skin color. C19 has worse outcomes in those w underlying conditions. We need to improve nutrition and eating habits of the entire population. Vitamin D deficiencies in colored people are far hit worse. Blacks account for only 13.6% of total pop,
so it’s not only blacks.

75% of American adults have vitamin D deficiency, because sunscreen, avoiding sun.

Changes in Earth’s Orbit Likely Kick started One of the Hottest Periods in History

Our planet is getting warmer today, that’s a fact. But, this isn’t the hottest time in our planet’s history — far from it, in fact. At various points, millions or billions of years ago, Earth was much more toasty than it is now. One of the most notable hot flashes came 56 million years ago, during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, or PETM. It was a relatively brief period of rapid, abnormal warming. During that time, temperatures that were already far above normal spiked by around nine degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) over a period of just a few thousand years. Tropical conditions prevailed far beyond the equator,
and ice caps were entirely absent from the poles.

The effects on life were dramatic. Marine organisms died in droves, unable to contend
with warmer waters. Meanwhile, mammals benefited, spreading and diversifying rapidly
in the millennia afterwards, setting the stage for future species, including us.

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, or PETM is also a benchmark for our current climate, offering insights into what it looks like when the Earth warms rapidly while carbon spills into the atmosphere. But the PETM wasn’t initiated by atmospheric carbon, though carbon did exacerbate the temperature increases. Instead, a group of scientists from the University of Hawaii and Utrecht University now say it was a confluence of astronomical
and terrestrial conditions that combined to tip our planet over the edge.

The find, published in Science, adds to our understanding of how changes in
Earth’s orbit affect climate. It also offers insights into a rare historical precedent
for our current era of global warming.

Orbital Oddities
The crux of the issue is the fact that Earth’s orbit isn’t the perfect, stable circle we usually imagine. Our path around the sun actually looks like a very slightly squashed circle, or ellipse. Astronomers call this eccentricity, and it varies predictably over time, becoming more or less squashed in a regular cycle. But the degree of eccentricity has noticeable, if subtle, effects on the climate, says University of Hawaii oceanographer and study

“If we look at the past 100 million years, we see distinct relationships between
changes in eccentricity and climate,” he says. He and his coauthor Lucas Lourens used a sediment core from the South Atlantic Ocean to track changes in Earth’s eccentricity around the time of the PETM. Looking at what kinds of sediment were laid down on top of each other, they saw a regular pattern that lined up with cycles of eccentricity from astronomical models. Because sediments change predictably as the climate changes, they’re a good proxy for the variations in Earth’s orbit, the authors say. With the method, they were able to pinpoint the sudden temperature spike of the PETM at 56 million years ago, right when Earth’s orbit was at its most eccentric, or elliptical.

A more eccentric orbit would mean that more solar radiation is hitting Earth, Zeebe says.
So it makes sense that it would cause warming. And Earth’s climate was already hot at that time, meaning that it may have been primed for the kind of feedback mechanisms that led
to the PETM. “There are indications that this simply triggered threshold behavior,” he says.
“So, you’re warming up slowly, slowly, slowly, and then you have a trigger like eccentricity which then can cause feedbacks that essentially result in the PETM.” The stifling conditions persisted for about 170,000 years, Zeebe says, a longer range than some previous estimates assumed.

Modern Analog
The new explanation for the PETM is intriguing on its own, a reminder that
the dynamics of Earth’s orbit can have real effects on our lives. But the PETM is invaluable
as a resource for understanding climate change today as well. It’s one of the few periods in Earth’s history where the climate has gotten very warm, very fast, and it could offer some hints of what we can expect in the near future.

Extinction events and the rapid movement of species into new habitats was one result
of the PETM, and the impact of those biological perturbations are still playing out today. Climate change is similarly stressing species out across the globe, while allowing others access to new habitats.

And the PETM sounds a warning for us as well, as if we still needed one.
While the Earth isn’t yet in danger of the extreme warming seen 56 million years ago,
just a few degrees could have disastrous consequences. The kind of feedback effects that just a little warming kicked off back then could happen again today, turning a small change into a massive one. “You nudge the system into one direction and the response of the system is to go even farther in that direction,” Zeebe says. Earth has an oblong orbit around the sun
which creates different earth cycles every 22 to 25 years.

47 ABC – As we start the new year and vaccinations continue to roll out. Health professionals are warning that mental health needs to be a priority in 2021.
Dr. Kathy Seifert, a renowned expert in psychology, says that compared to a year ago people’s mental health rates are up. Those who were not struggling with mental health may now be because of the pandemic. While those who were already may have more severe cases.
“So people are really stressed and if you tend to be anxious or depressed it may make it worse for you and getting out and talking to someone to make you feel better is really a good idea,” Dr. Seifert said.
Those we spoke to say overall, they’ve noticed a change in both family and friends.
“I would say they’re a little bit more down than they were a year ago,” Charlrae Brown said. “Everybody’s afraid of going out there and somehow catching ‘it’ so you always want to be very careful. So I think there is a little bit of anxiety out there.”
“I definitely feel like the mental health issues aren’t going to go away if not probably rise,” Vicente Hernandez said.
That’s why experts say it’s important for people to reach out to loved ones and friends if they are struggling. But also just to check-in.
“Tell somebody that you’re feeling anxious and get ideas on how to make it better,”
Dr. Seifert said.
Looking forward, Dr. Seifert believes that as more people get vaccinated and we return
to a sense of normalcy that the structure will help curb the rising mental health rates.
“It’s going to be, I’m hoping, a supportive environment for people to move back into,”
Dr. Seifert said.
Dr. Seifert says for those struggling to cope with their mental health,  there are some things you can do. She recommends doing deep breathing exercises to help reduce stress levels.
As well as keeping a journal where you write down what you’re thankful for each day.

What is a chemical imbalance ~ depression

Many people believe that mental illness is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, with one survey finding that about 80 percent believe that depression is due to some sort of chemical imbalance.  While the true causes of mental illness are likely much more complex, some have advocated for talking about mental illness this way to reduce stigma. If we talk about mental illness as if it were a “brain disease” and refer primarily to its biological causes, then people would be less likely to believe that mental illness is caused by a weakness of character. Mental illness would not be the fault of an individual, but rather, their biology.

However, this well-intentioned way of framing mental illness can backfire. One study found that talking about mental illness as if it were a brain disease and due to purely biological causes, rather than something that is due to psychosocial causes like childhood trauma, can lead people to treat those who suffer from mental illness more harshly. This may be because the “brain disease” framing conveys that people who have mental illness are physically distinct, which can lead to a sense of othering. If someone is perceived as having different biology than us, 
it might be harder to have empathy for them because we do not see them as like us. This framing may also be damaging for the people suffering from mental illnesses, making them think it is unlikely that they will recover. One study found that when people were told their depression was caused by a chemical imbalance, they showed more pessimism about recovering. The “chemical imbalance” framing tacitly suggests that mental illness is permanent – “wired” into someone’s brain, instead of something that can potentially improve through treatment.
It has become increasingly common to refer to mental illnesses, as well as developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, as examples of “neurodiversity.” The term neurodiversity initially rose to prominence in online groups of autistic individuals, and is often strongly associated with autism spectrum disorder. However, it has since grown to become a way of describing a range of mental illnesses and developmental disorders, such as dyslexia, ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and more.

The basic tenets of neurodiversity are that there is no “normal” human brain, that there are differences, not disorders, and that there are, in many cases, positive aspects to having a variety of brains that function differently. Advocates for neurodiversity commonly draw parallels with homosexuality, which was previously described as a disorder by the American Psychological Association until 1973, but is now viewed by many as a part of normal human variation.

The idea of neurodiversity is not without its critics. Some have suggested that it may commodify and romanticize difference, while ignoring the suffering of those who are not high-functioning and do not have exceptional talents that come with their neurodivergence. Others have accused it of being anti-treatment and anti-cure.

There is little research about the effectiveness of this framing. However, early research is promising: one study found that those who know about neurodiversity tend to view autism as more of a positive identity. No research, to my knowledge, has looked at this framing in the context of mental illnesses like depression or anxiety. So, while there’s not yet enough evidence to make any strong claims about whether the “neurodiversity” frame works, it is a valiant effort to try to reframe the all-too-common and harmful tendency to talk about mental illness as if it were a “brain disease.”
As a wide body of psychological literature indicates, words matter, and the words we choose to use can powerfully influence how people think. If we choose the right words to frame difference, we can help fight stigma and potentially make the world more accommodating for the neurodiversity that exists within and all around us.

Causes of Bipolar Disorder
Doctors don’t completely understand the causes of bipolar disorder. But they’ve gained a greater understanding in recent years of the bipolar spectrum, which includes the elated highs of mania to the lows of major depression, along with various mood states between these two extremes.

Bipolar disorder seems to often run in families and there appears to be a genetic part to this mood disorder. There is also growing evidence that environment and lifestyle issues have an effect on the disorder’s severity. Stressful life events — or alcohol or drug abuse — can make bipolar disorder more difficult to treat.

The Brain and Bipolar Disorder
Experts believe bipolar disorder is partly caused by an underlying problem with specific brain circuits and the functioning of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Three brain chemicals — noradrenaline (norepinephrine), serotonin, and dopamine — are involved in both brain and bodily functions. 
Noradrenaline and serotonin have been consistently linked to psychiatric mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. Nerve pathways within areas of the brain that regulate pleasure and emotional reward are regulated by dopamine. Disruption of circuits that communicate using dopamine in other brain areas appears connected to psychosis and schizophrenia, a severe mental disorder characterized by distortions in reality and illogical thought patterns and behaviors.
The brain chemical serotonin is connected to many body functions such as sleep, wakefulness, eating, sexual activity, impulsivity, learning, and memory. Researchers believe that abnormal functioning of brain circuits that involve serotonin as a chemical messenger contribute to mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder).

Is Bipolar Disorder Genetic?
Many studies of bipolar patients and their relatives have shown that bipolar disorder sometimes runs in families. Perhaps the most convincing data come from twin studies. In studies of identical twins, scientists report that if one identical twin has bipolar disorder, the other twin has a greater chance of developing bipolar disorder than another sibling in the family. Researchers conclude that the lifetime chance of an identical twin (of a bipolar twin) to also develop bipolar disorder is about 40% to 70%.

In more studies at Johns Hopkins University, researchers interviewed all first-degree relatives of patients with bipolar I and bipolar II disorder and concluded that bipolar II disorder was the most common affective disorder in both family sets. The researchers found that 40% of the 47 first-degree relatives of the bipolar II patients also had bipolar II disorder; 22% of the 219 first-degree relatives of the bipolar I patients had bipolar II disorder. However, among patients with bipolar II, researchers found only one relative with bipolar I disorder. They concluded that bipolar II is the most prevalent diagnosis of relatives in both bipolar I and bipolar II families.
Studies at Stanford University that explored the genetic connection of bipolar disorder found that children with one biological parent with bipolar I or bipolar II disorder have an increased likelihood of getting bipolar disorder. In this study, researchers reported that 51% of the bipolar offspring had a psychiatric disorder, most commonly major depression, dysthymia (low-grade, chronic depression), bipolar disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Interestingly, the bipolar parents in the study who had a childhood history of ADHD were more likely to have children with bipolar disorder rather than ADHD.

In other findings, researchers report that first-degree relatives of a person diagnosed with bipolar I or II disorder are at an increased risk for major depression when compared to first-degree relatives of those with no history of bipolar disorder. Scientific findings also show that the lifetime risk of affective disorders in relatives with family members who have bipolar disorder increases, depending on the number of diagnosed relatives.
What Role Does Environment and Lifestyle Play in Bipolar Disorder?
Along with a genetic link to bipolar disorder, research shows that children of bipolar parents are often surrounded by significant environmental stressors. That may include living with a parent who has a tendency toward mood swings, alcohol or substance abuse, financial and sexual indiscretions, and hospitalizations. Although most children of a bipolar parent will not develop bipolar disorder, some children of bipolar parents may develop a different psychiatric disorder such as ADHD, major depression, schizophrenia, or substance abuse.
Environmental stressors also play a role in triggering bipolar episodes in those who are genetically predisposed. For example, children growing up in bipolar families may live with a parent who lacks control of moods or emotions. Some children may live with constant verbal or even physical abuse if the bipolar parent is not medicated or is using alcohol or drugs.
Can Lack of Sleep Worsen the Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?
Some findings show that people with bipolar disorder have a genetic predisposition to sleep-wake cycle problems that may trigger symptoms of depression and mania.

The problem for those with bipolar disorder, however, is that sleep loss may lead to a mood episode such as mania (elation) in some patients. Worrying about losing sleep can increase anxiety, thus worsening the bipolar mood disorder altogether. Once a sleep-deprived person with bipolar disorder goes into the manic state, the need for sleep decreases even more.
In one study, researchers interviewed 39 bipolar patients with primarily manic or depressed episodes to determine the presence of social rhythm disruptions during the two months prior to the onset of the mood. (A social rhythm disruption is a disturbance in daily routines such as sleeping, eating, exercising, or interacting with other people, which in turn could affect patterns of brain activity tied to mood regulation.)

When comparing the results with volunteers in the control group, researchers concluded that most people with bipolar disorder experience at least one social rhythm disruption prior to a major mood episode. In addition, the researchers found that social rhythm disruption affected more bipolar patients with mania than the patients with depression. Their findings concluded that 65% of the patients with bipolar disorder had at least one disruption in their daily rhythm in the eight weeks before the onset of a manic episode.

Diet and emotional well-being
Diet is such an important component of mental health that it has inspired an entire field of medicine called nutritional psychiatry. Mind-body medicine specialist Eva Selhub, MD has written a superb summary of what nutritional psychiatry is and what it means for you right here on this blog, and it’s worth reading.
What it boils down to is that what we eat matters for every aspect of our health, but especially our mental health. Several recent research analyses looking at multiple studies support that there is a link between what one eats and our risk of depression, specifically. One analysis concluded:
“A dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of fruit (your brain needs to be fed
100mg of sugar daily,) vegetables, whole grain, fish, olive oil, low-fat dairy and antioxidants and low intakes of animal foods was apparently associated with a decreased risk of depression. However, don’t forget to include your good fat omega 3 fatty acids. A dietary pattern characterized by a high consumption of red and/or processed meat, refined grains, sweets, high-fat dairy products, butter, potatoes and high-fat gravy, and low intakes of fruits and vegetables is associated with an increased risk of depression.”

Which comes first? Poor diet or depression?
One could argue that, well, being depressed makes us more likely to eat unhealthy foods. This is true, so we should ask what came first, the diet or the depression? Researchers have addressed this question, thankfully. Another large analysis looked only at prospective studies, meaning, they looked at baseline diet and then calculated the risk of study volunteers going on to develop depression. 
Researchers found that a healthy diet (the Mediterranean diet as an example) was associated with a significantly lower risk of developing depressive symptoms. So, how should I counsel my patients on diet? There are several healthy options that can be used as a guide. One that comes up again and again is the Mediterranean diet. Another wonderful resource for folks is the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health website with an introductory guide to healthy diet.

Bottom-line to Depression
Thinking yourself back to good mental health and learning to live with depression (selfish outlook on life.). That’s the best way to get your Happy Life Back. Thus climbing yourself out of that helpless feeling (the deep dark hole you can’t seemingly get out of without falling deeper in.) Punish yourself by trying to come up with three positive three things about your life. Two of the best things about your life is you woke up this morning and someone always has it worse off than you do.
