Here’s the story of Susan Boyle.
Born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, Susan Boyle was the youngest of five children. Her mother Bridget was 45 years old when she gave birth to her. Soon they noticed that there was something different about the way Boyle learned. Her family told her it was because she had been deprived of oxygen at birth.
Much later she was told she had been misdiagnosed her entire life and actually has Asperger Syndrome instead. Boyle told the Telegraph, “I like to see myself as someone with a problem, but one I can solve. It is definitely getting better.”
So exactly how old was she when she was diagnosed?
Typically, symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome show up early in someone’s life, and today many people are diagnosed in the U.K. around the age of five. Boyle’s case was much different. The stigma of having “brain damage” and being bullied made for a tough childhood, on top of the untreated social anxieties she was already experiencing.
Boyle told The Guardian, “It was the wrong diagnosis when I was a kid. I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.”
Boyle Was 52 Years Old When She Found Out
Boyle is one of the people who are on the high-functioning spectrum of Asperger’s. Her IQ is above average but she struggles with understanding how other people are feeling, as well as communicating her own emotions. Her social anxieties attributed to Asperger’s can create misunderstandings and challenges in her relationships.
The Guardian reported that Boyle suffers from mood swings, severe depression and emotional outbursts, which aren’t uncommon for someone on the Asperger’s spectrum. Learning of her diagnosis, and being able to identify the symptoms is a relief she says.
One emotional breakdown helped her end a feud with her brother.
The youngest of five siblings, Boyle and her older brother Gerry had disagreements, which led to fighting, and then not talking at all. The two had cut each other out of their lives after Susan rose to fame, and rumors about their family hit the tabloids.
For two years, the siblings didn’t talk. That is, until early June 2016, Susan reached out to her brother. She called him from Heathrow Airport, depressed, and having a meltdown. Gerry told Mirror,“I’d never heard her sound so down on the phone.
I was really concerned. She didn’t sound like she was in a good place. We hadn’t spoken for two and a half years but when all is said and done I am her brother. I realized how sad it was that we didn’t speak– and that it shouldn’t be that way.”
She Lost Her Parents Before BGT Boyle never officially told her parents that she wanted to become a singer for a living. Her father supported her singing but passed away in 1999. As her mother Bridget aged, Boyle stayed home as her caretaker. In 2007, Bridget passed away at the age of 91.
With nothing else to lose, Boyle garnered the courage to audition for Britain’s Got Talent in 2009. She told The Guardian, “I felt a part of me had died with [my mother]…. I so wanted to make her proud, so I found the strength to apply for Britain’s Got Talent and I truly believe that she was the angel on my shoulder that day.”
Taking care of her elderly mother and struggling without a proper diagnosis for most of her life, Boyle wasn’t ready for a romantic relationship. That is until she met her prince charming at a Florida hotel while on tour. “He was the perfect gentleman and even paid the bill,” she said. “Afterwards, we exchanged details. When we said goodbye he gave me a peck on the cheek.”
Now that she’s diagnosed, she’s able to recognize that her struggle with growing close to someone is common. Boyle told The Daily Mail, “People with Asperger’s do put a barrier up because they don’t know how to trust people. I try not to. I want to let people in.”
Fame Hasn’t Fazed Her
While other people in her position would transition into a life of luxury, Boyle has remained humble and stuck to her roots. In fact, she still lives in the Scotland home she grew up in with her parents and siblings.
Her wardrobe remains modest, and she’s perfectly satisfied with her simple life in the country, living with her cat named Pebbles. Boyle also prefers to keep her life on the private side and finds her hometown neighborhood to be a comfortable place for her.
Growing up, Boyle was bullied as a child for being different.
She knew that stepping into the spotlight as an adult also put her at risk for bullying, but decided to brave it anyway. In 2017, Boyle had to face her past when local teens followed her down the street, shouting at her and taunting her for her differences. Boyle admitted that it affected her.
“Who wouldn’t cry?” She told the Daily Mail. “I did, of course I did. It brought back memories for me, memories from school. If it continues I will have to speak to the police… but I’m all about giving people a chance and the opportunity to see right from wrong. That doesn’t mean I’m a pushover.”
She Lost 30 Pounds To Improve Her Health
Boyle’s life hit the fast track after being discovered on Britain’s Got Talent. Her schedule was packed fully of tours, appearances and performances. Like many people with a busy schedule, Boyle’s health took a toll. The singer was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
She took the diagnosis seriously, and followed the advice given by her doctor to lose weight. Boyle successful lost 30 pounds and is aiming to make it a lifestyle change. She told The Sun, “I needed to stop eating sweeties and cakes. It’s the bane of my life.”

Reportedly, that’s when her brother Gerry reached out and demanded that his younger sibling fork over money. Their other siblings saw their feud play out, as Susan refused to give Gerry the $60,000 he asked of her.
When she didn’t relent, Gerry threatened to commit suicide if he wasn’t paid. He believed that since rumors about the family were going around in the media due to Susan’s fame, that she owed him.

Susan Loves Children and Wants to Adopt
Boyle has been open about how much she loves children. When she and her brother Gerry finally reconciled she was able to meet his grandson Alfie. “It was lovely,” Gerry said. “She couldn’t stop picking him up.” She also started talking about raising a child of her own and she’s considering adopting.
“I have so much love to give,” she told The Daily Mail. “I want to adopt a child who doesn’t have much, who I can really give something to. It’s a way of giving back for me. I love children, I always have but I couldn’t have them.” She admits that people don’t take her seriously on the subject, to which she optimistically replied, “They have a giggle at me. Let’s see.”
One thing fans love about Susan Boyle is that she’s a relatable, average person who was able to achieve extraordinary things. Leading up to her BGT performance, Boyle was struggling with the death of her mother, and being able to pay her bills. Although it wasn’t until she was in her 50s that her career as an artist took off, Boyle has achieved a lot of success. In fewer than ten years, Boyle’s estimated net worth rocketed to $33 million. Her first album, I Dreamed A Dream debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 2009. Her hit single was included in a movie, and she even performed for the Pope.

“I am so proud of Susan and everything she has achieved,” he said. “She is the most generous person I know but Gerry just takes advantage. I’ve never heard of him having a proper job. It’s always been that he’s an entrepreneur which I just think means he’s a lazy [expletive.]

It was initially mentioned in the news, but appears worse than initially reported.
Local Teens Have Targeted Her The local teens follow Boyle down her neighborhood streets, throwing rocks and pieces of paper on fire while shouting insults at her. The gang has grown to 10-15 kids and she has called the police on them, in fear of her safety.
Boyle doesn’t want to live a life of luxury and excess. And she doesn’t want to give hand-outs to her relatives so that they can drive fancy cars and wear fur coats either. But she has lots of love for them, and says she’s always willing to help her siblings, nephews, and nieces in a time of need.
“I can’t buy them a Lamborghini or a Ferrari or a penthouse, But I’d never see them stuck for money,” Boyle told Daily Mail. Just like any other family, sometimes family members go through hard times and require a helping hand. While Boyle also doesn’t want to spoil her nieces and nephews, and enable them to live a lazy lifestyle, she is empathetic when they could use a place to stay or pay off their finances.
She gifted her nephew £30,000 for a fashion business venture and paid off her niece’s credit card debt. Boyle has also paid the mortgage on her family’s homes many times, and helps with their car payments.
