Prolong Stress & Cancer Risk

According to the National Cancer Institute: current information                  on the possible association between stress and cancer, at least three        areas of  investigation are being explored?

Virus – related tumors:  an  indirect relationship between certain             types of virus -related tumors (Kaposi Sarcoma, Burkett Lymphoma,         and cancer of  the liver)  and stress has been established. The indirect  results  from  the  facts  some cancers are triggered by a process that involves certain precursor infections (such  as  herpes  and hepatitis)   known to be exacerbated by stress and a weaken immune system.

Cell Processes:  the body’s natural neuroendocrine responses has           been shown to alter important cell processes that protect against the formation  of  cancer,   such  as  cell repair  and  the  regulation of  cell growth.  Age related deficits  in protein synthesis  and  responsiveness             of  cells  to  stress,  decrease  cell – cell  communication  and  inefficient     signal transduction may render old cells less able to withstand stress.

Tumor  Growth  and  Spread:  the  precise  biological  mechanisms  underlying the influence of  stress in the growth  and spread of  cancer.      Are not yet understood, however, a link between the effects of stress on      the  immune  system  and  the  growth  of  some  tumors  has  been  well documented. A recent study at the University of  Texas,  M.D. Anderson Cancer Center  in  Houston  indicates  that  stress  hormones, especially  norepinephrine  and  epinephrine  can contribute to tumor progression          in patients with ovarian cancer.    Maitake Mushroom

Other  Factors  in  the  Effect  of  Stress  on  the  Immune  System!!!!!       They are numerous and can exacerbate the negative influence of  stress       on  the  immune  system.  Age,  nutrition,  gender  (estrogen),  ethnicity,     and  psychosocial  characteristic of  the individual  can affect white cell circulation  in  response  to  stressors.  Depression,  lack  of  support, or  hostility can cause altered immune cell response to acute stress.

Regardless  to  it’s  origin,  psychological  stress  always  leads  to  a   change in white blood cell count at varying degrees depending upon the   type and duration of  the stressor.  Current  research  shows that longer  lasting stressors  causes  a reduction of  immune  function  and  increase over vulnerability to disease.  Numerous studies  document  the immune system suppressors caused by severe stressors can be detrimental.

Such stressor like martial strife,  bereavement,  long term caregiving,    living in unfavorable conditions,  and the reaction to life changing events (floods,  earthquakes,   fires,  tornadoes  and  hurricanes.)   Amongst  the  protective factors physical fitness appears to be a very important positive   mediator  of  white  blood  cell  activity  in  the  presence  of  psychological stressors….

This all said,  I think it would be interesting  to compare cancer rates        for the most stressful cities in the United States. Based upon divorce rates, commute time, unemployment rate, both violent  and property  crime also alcohol  consumption  and  those whom smoke.  Seeing  firsthand  “if ” this theory holds true under pressure. While also comparing the cities scoring highest in the  fitness index,  Top Vegan Friendly  least ~ most polluted      and State Cancer Rates  by types of  cancer.
